There’s a mission where you have to steal intel from a base to find out where the next patrol is coming in. If you already know where they are you can skip the camp entirely and place your horse in the road where they’re coming from to make them stop. Blowing up the whole convoy with mines while they’re trying to shoe away your horse. That mission blew my mind. You can “break” the missions and they’d reward you with the highest grade for doing that. Other games just aren’t designed like metal gear games are. Also Quiet is a masterpiece of an AI partner.
The possibilities were endless, I was doing things like planting C4 on vehicles driving towards the enemies and jumping out, all the enemies would approach the vehicle to investigate and I'd trigger the C4 and go another direction into the mission! Or using a flution on a container and escaping a mission quickly...😄
Even early on when your mission is to destroy the comms equipment, you can do so beforehand in free roam. Then when you start the actual mission, about 30 seconds in Miller will tell you your objective only for Ocelot to interject saying its already done. Miller pauses and awkwardly says "Oh. Uh...good work boss, mission complete." and the mission literally ends then and there.
My favourite basic version of that is an early mission where you had to take a guy out in a Fort, had to sneak up to him. Later on you could just snipe him from a mile away.

MGS V had an amazing game engine. The episodic nature allowed for quick gaming sessions as well as longer bouts. The story was very intriguing. But as a long time MGS fan, you can really tell where konami stuffed things up. The last act is a hot mess narratively and the boss fights aren’t a patch on the Fox or Cobra units from earlier games. I played this game exclusively for 1 year when it launched. I picked it up at midnight from gamestop and immediately went home and got right to it. It's my favorite game of all time.
This game has grown to be my favorite in the entire series and Metal Gear Solid is my favorite series of all time. I didn't feel that way when it was released all the talk of it being unfinished really took away from how I viewed the game. However years later diving back in I realized the genius of it with "never game over" and "we are all Snake" being the theme of the entire game. The game is so layered that it's easy to miss upon first glance. You have to really dig into its world find all the tapes, listen to guards at different times of the day and different locations, and piece everything together to yourself. Every other Metal Gear had all of its story elements laid out right in front of you as convoluted as they may be. Mgs5 completely stripped this method away and tell us it's story in a way that even if you come back to this game years later if you're paying attention you'll almost always find something new. I love that I can dive back into this game at any time and tackle missions completely differently than I ever have and find new content it is tucked away all over MGSV's world. I understand now that this game truly was a parting gift from Kojima to his fans. Something that we could play for years and still find something new hence "never be game over".
One of the most defining moments in my life. This game transcended art and became an axiomatic treatise on morality and loyalty, encouraging me to reflect on my own life decisions like any good novel would.
As a person who isn't that deep into the MGS franchise, basically only playing MGS1, 2, and 3, but only ever beating MGS3, MGSV is one of my favorite games of all time. It's my favorite MGS game for sure. Just the amount of creative freedom and how interesting the AI works and how some of the levels and missions are set, the base management and silly things you could do, I've never encountered another game as satisfying to play as it. Hell, on PC, there are even mods that add to that replayability. And despite how much shit the story got, I actually really enjoyed it. It did feel unfinished, but it was still very compelling. Not as good as MGS3, but all it's other qualities make up for it. I know I'm in the minority, but I can't lie to myself and deny just how much I enjoyed it.
Yeah it feels unfinished because that's the whole point, you are left with a "phantom pain" of your own by wanting another chapter or mission.. a true masterpiece
I agree with you 100%. MGS5 did not have the best story,(especially compared to MGS3) but the gameplay mechanics and freedom overall was what got me hooked. I never felt like I had the most options in any stealth game except for MGS5. I mean shit you can go guns blazing despite the game mainly focusing on stealth
the game with the best gameplay of all times. Because of that, I managed to get out of Metal Gear Online only some months ago, to this very day, MGSV is still a MASTERPIECE, even with a cutted ending.
My second favorite MGS game after MGS1, this masterpiece has the best stealth gameplay ever! It's a very fun game to play, and i think we need a director's cut of this gem, Konami should make a deal with Kojima production and make it happen. NEVER GAME OVER!
In term of stealth mechanics and freedom (down to passing of time, waiting for the night etc.) the game was such a huge step forward for the series and stealth genre in general. The mission design was very repetitive, however, it lacked proper "camps", "bases", industrial complexes - like those in the previous entries or Ground Zeroes. And the unfinished plot.. yeah. Still, a fantastic game I wish other developers would flat out copy ideas from.
Finally a comment that makes sense. Everyone else in the comments is sucking off mgs5 but not realizing its true flaws like you mentioned. I got platinum on mgsv and I totally understand what you’re feeling. If I’m being honest, I reloaded ground zeroes recently and that experience is way more fun in terms of re-playability than phantom pain. The story was pretty terrible too. I believe the early leaks were the reason for the story being unfinished and, to be honest pretty shitty. AND THEN, They fired David Hayter…THEN Kojima. This game was realistically a major shit show. lol
One of my all time favorite trailers, Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain is an absolute masterpiece, Hideo Kojima truly outdid himself, the world is so detailed, graphics, sound design all top notch, a joy to explore, while the gameplay is just so much fun! I have played the game for hundreds of hours and still never get bored, so much fun and amazing replay value, one of my all time favorite games. 👏👏👏👏
There is always a lot to say about MGS V, but when it comes to the qualities of the game, there is a thing we almost never speak about and which is for me one of his biggest achievement: optimization and stability. I played the game on PS3 and PS4. In both cases, the game was flawless in this area: no crash, no bug, no drastic FPS loss (or never enough to be noticed), etc. Despite the challenges, the internal tensions and the few corners they had to cut to release the game, Kojima Productions never made any compromise on confort and "QC" in general, no matter the support (in my experience anyway). Some would say that it's a miracle knowing the context, but no, it's just what happens when a studio really care about his product and his public. I think we should talk more about that, because a lot of people don't see or appreciate the gesture and still considers MGS V as a "failure". They couldn't be more wrong from my point of view, and some recent release showed us what a "non finish" game really was.
This. When it comes to Kojima Productions games, you know they care and will care to make it work. They don't just want it to make it "playable". They care to make it work each and every time. Everything needs to work consistently. From human movement, to gun handling, to vehicle handling. P.S.: And the sound part! I could listen the rain hitting the tarp on those outposts' tents for hours.
They really caputred lightning in a bottle with Fox Engine. I can run MGSV with my crappy ass laptop that got 2016 low end AMD cpu and yet the game runs flawlessly with minimal framedrops. I was surprised due to how amazing the game looks
I call SUS. Or you did what 99.9% of us didn’t/wouldnt. Probably 6or 7 I left on the table and yeah it bothered me after the fact for sure. -I had about 80% s++ And the other 20% s++. I’m sure I returned now it would be al s++ but that changes nothing. Whats really amazing is how each game had missteps but improved on the previous games gameplay, pushing the genre forward each time, yet STILL had so many silly easter eggs, tricks, and in jokes baked in. When you play mgs and find silly things it is like you are chillin with the developers and getting a nudge and wink. And the core mechanics are sooooooooo tightly made that you typically cant break the game, but can always indulge your creative side. What an amazing series.
Believe or not, nowadays we play it more for Lethal PvPs on FOBs rather than stealth. This game has the most complete versatile mechanics ever!!! I love it.

This game is the one which made me happy to come back to video gaming, after i almost never played since my master system and arcade wanders in the early 90's :(()) in 2017 I decided to a buy a PS4 because what I was looking at the beauty of games like Witcher 3, Horizon, that got my attention on this media again. Phantom Pain's gameplay is so precise and perfect I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on it, redoing all missions to get an S+ on each of them, trying different approaches. I really didn't care that much about the story which I absolutely had no cue on haha (because I never played a MGS game before this one) but I loved everything else so much about the game, the little trics and alternate use of some equipments you can do to fulfill the missions, and the feeling of stealth is amazing. Some missions are crazy like Where do bees sleep?, Cloaked in silence, Code talker being my favorites. Simply my favorite of all time!
My son and I play this game all the time. It is easily the most played game on my PC. Throw the Infinite Heaven mod on there and it's really just perfect.
This type of genre will be the most anticipated genre in upcoming years for all gamers in the world, although it would be so hard to find one that meets the standards that this masterpiece made, I hope when there's one that meets the standard or even surpassed it would be made by none other Kojima itself, The Legends.

@@travv88 That would be awesome. But until Koijima returns back to Konami, we will have to wait. Not sure how long.... Camo and Weapon customisation from MGS4. Music from MGS1 and MGS3. Loved the game. Hated the lack of cool bosses like Snake Eater. Can't wait for the remake of it.. MGS 5 is one of my favorite games. Graohics are amazing. Story is cool. Gameplay and stealth are amazing. Love the open world. Especially the Africa setting
The only fact that really made me upset about the critics is the people saying that the open world of this game is just full of nothing. That's the point. You're given an open world to strategize and use your own tactics to infiltrate enemy camps and structures, you're not gonna find strip clubs or GTA shit, of course it's gonna be deserted for the most part.
I’ve sunk so many hours into this game over those seven years, 100% it on 3 different platforms and I still can’t believe no one has tried to fill the space MGSV left in the industry.
Breakpoint is great for sure. Won't argue with you on that, however MGS has always been the blueprint for Tom Clancy games. MGS is just its own thing while others try to make a really good versions it with different elements.
I really enjoyed Death Stranding, both as a game and as a weird, surrealist narrative experiment. MGSV wasn't the narrative masterpiece that Death Stranding was, but as a game, it's a clear culmination of 20-odd years of honing a single genre. To this day, I've never played a game that operated as smoothly, or felt as intuitive to play. I never felt like there was a right way and a wrong way to play it, never felt like I was searching for the one trick the game wanted me to use. In that way, MGSV has ruined me for other games. Every time I find myself trying things that should work, but don't, because the game wants me to use one specific trick or tool or technique for a specific problem, I think to myself, "Kojima wouldn't play me like that. He'd want me to be creative."
As a big Splinter Cell fan, I'm playing this for the first time right now and absolutely loving it! Mother base can get a bit confusing at times though 😅
This game was released in 2015 and STILL plays smoother and better than games like GR Breakpoint which came out in 2019! Story, characters with depth that you actually care about, countless ways to tackle missions, the depth of gear, mission diversity. It's top notch. sad they took down the servers a few years ago. The only thing I disliked was MGO3. I much preferred MGO2
The only game in my whole life that I've racked up over 300 hours on. I wish there was more metal gear with this gameplay...it carried the entire game.
With all the remasters nowadays the one I’m very interested in is Metal Gear Solid 4 for the current gen consoles. I had this originally on the PS3 but would love to have it with updated resolution and framerate.
i'll never get over how this game sure has it's flaws, yet its also the Stealth game i've dreamt of since i was a young teen. It's perfect in it's own way and i'll be replaying it for the rest of my life.
I didn’t understand the story much at all when I played it being that it was my first and only MGS game but to this day this was one of the greatest games I’ve ever played!! Just a complete open world stealth game with so many fun ways to address each situation. I was obsessed with cleaning out entire villages undetected, sometimes from a far with all the weapon attachments.
I grew up a Splinter Cell Xbox man, but recently had the opportunity to delve into MGSV: effing amazing. The movement, the sound, the options, the tacticality, the FEEL... easily one of my favorite stealth games of all time, and that's despite my supreme hatred for Metal Gear's utter nonsense story (and yes, I mean all of the games - they're like Fast and Furious narratives). Ten out of bloody ten.
One time when I was playing the game I just got done with an annoying mission that I had to chance down trucks and soon as I said “thank god I’m done with this stupid mission.” While the chopper was carrying me away I got shot down in the middle of the air and couldn’t get out so I died. It was in a middle of a live stream so as soon as I got in the chopper it just cut to me just sighing in defeat seeming that the stream cut the whole chopper getting shot down part.

I play as how I’d imagine a phantom would be I leave no survivors no one catches me or spots me I’ll grab someone interrogate them then kill them. I can also sneak by passively and get the S ranks. This game has a charm to it that I adore.
The abandoned final act cutscenes give a hint at where things could’ve gone.
Shame but still a beautiful game.
Thank you Hideo
Hands down best game I ever played. To put it in context, I've been gaming since Air Sea Battle and Oregon Trail on floppy disk.
At least once a year, I get hooked on this game and play it a whole bunch. It's just so fun and satisying to play.
yea same. I'm back for another playthrough
Still, the best "incomplete" game of all time!
…and that’s a pretty hotly contested category these days 😂
U are such a hater, the phantom pain was way better than witcher 3 in 2015 and deserved GOTY.
Its incomplete on purpose.. If u know Kojima u know this is totslly his doing
There had to be more planned for mother base. That's a huge area where there's literally nothing to do. It's kind of pointless.
@@guybroyles48 what are u talking about? U can drive, practice shooting, combat, take a shower, expand, defend her from invasions, visit Paz, take a shower with Quiet, even there are secondaries missions over there.
I love how you guy's never give up this game. It feels good knowing I'm not the only one who loves everything about it. Dam ITS BEEN 7 years!
Still playing on a weekly basis 7 years later.
It's a damn miracle it works perfectly on only 4GB of RAM.
I played the game for so long after it ended thinking I had to unlock the next chapter. It took awhile to figure that out, it was so good though
the game with the best gameplay of all times. Because of that, I managed to get out of Metal Gear Online only some months ago, to this very day, MGSV is still a MASTERPIECE, even with a cutted ending.
MGS V and Max Payne 3 are the best 3rd person shooters I've ever played from a gameplay perspective.
I still play this game from time to time. I miss metal gear. I hung up my mantle after this, it hasn't been the same. Where are you boss !?
This game was realistically a major shit show. lol
1:48 - The Phantom Spain 🇪🇸
Without the masterpiece of MGS1 I would’ve still only been playing sports games... this is the GREATEST STORY LINE EVER for a game... SALUTE 😎
@@Satantron1unfortunate that Fox Engine is probably never going to be used again by Konami.
im playing it again after a few years. its my game i always go back to. crazy how well the graphics still live up to todays standards.
1000 ish hours in this game and every time i keep going to it, im in the end game with nothing more to develop..... and still i love this masterpiece!

-I needed that final greande upgrade, a couple fob things and the tier 12 handgun final upgrade.
Probably 6or 7 I left on the table and yeah it bothered me after the fact for sure.

I beat MGS5 once per year. I played the online missions before the servers went down. The game is definitely in my top 5 all time.
When did the servers go down?
@@jamal438 Exactly, I didn't know they did if they did.
There hasn't been a game like it since. Absolute masterpiece.
MGS V and Max Payne 3 on PC are the best 3rd person shooters I've ever played and they were way ahead of their time.
The amount of content this game has to offer
I thought the game was over after 66 hours just to realize it's only part 1
@@theonewhoknocks1412 then to realize part 2 sucks loo
@@Ngmsosa yeah it's worse than part 1 for sure
Believe or not, nowadays we play it more for Lethal PvPs on FOBs rather than stealth. This game has the most complete versatile mechanics ever!!! I love it.
I wish I was in the universe where this gets another entry in the series. Loved MGS5, time to replay.
Mgsv is great but it has flaws when compared to the metal gear series.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a spiritual stealth successor for me.
Also, the game's title is misleading as there is no Solid Snake in it! Same goes for MGS3.
I can proudly say I'm a diamond dog.
The multiplayer was so sick too! I didn’t love team death match but the objective ones were insane
One of the greatest games ever made and one of the greatest experiences. I remember buying the MGS5 gaming manual a year ago and planning each mission; it was so immersive. Ended up getting the platinum and what an experience it was. Quiets theme gets me every time.
I MISS EVERYTHING.
Due to switch in PS account re-played to get Platinum on new account...playing it a full 2nd time, just AWESOME! Actually 3 months later still playing! Doing FOB missions and trying to get all weapons built...WOW...fantastic game, and the stealth still gets my blood pressure up...Im old...LOL!
Best game ever made. I can still come back to it and play each level over and over and not be bored in 2023.
Underrated comment. I made all s missions for Raiden and I love customizing my weapons
It's just a blast. Try to knock everybody out and extract them or just go on a rampage. So many different tools at your disposal.
I believe this game should have been released for PS5 not PS3 to reach its full potential.
@@NK-b3z8qI think mgsv should have released in 2018 I believe it’s a perfect year for it.
This game is the one which made me happy to come back to video gaming, after i almost never played since my master system and arcade wanders in the early 90's :(())
in 2017 I decided to a buy a PS4 because what I was looking at the beauty of games like Witcher 3, Horizon, that got my attention on this media again.
I would honestly expect this game to be talked about by everyone for years.
My son and I play this game all the time. It is easily the most played game on my PC. Throw the Infinite Heaven mod on there and it's really just perfect.
MGS V is in my top 3 games as far as just gameplay. The A.I is phenomenal.
enemy learn from your game style. Is fenomenal
The graphics are still incredible… looks path traced without really being path traced
Just started playing this again got the definitive experience. Looks amazing and cheap bought it for £3.19gbp on the ps store
On PS5 it's a beaut!
@@i-c-dead-ppi4223what are the benefits in a PS5 version of the game over the Series X?
It's still worth $60 in 2022 imo.
This type of genre will be the most anticipated genre in upcoming years for all gamers in the world, although it would be so hard to find one that meets the standards that this masterpiece made, I hope when there's one that meets the standard or even surpassed it would be made by none other Kojima itself, The Legends.
Wildlands n MGSV are the two best stealth/ tactical games I have ever played
I loved Ghost Recon Wildlands.
Jeez 7 years later and still holds up. 2015 really was a blessing for games we took for granite.
7 years later, and 100s of hours invested in the game. I still haven't beat it yet! This game can take a lifetime to beat!
You Play Agressively Or Stealthily?
If you're very thorough you can beat the game. I enjoy taking every person out and taking them back to the base.
@@travv88 Hahaha. I started enjoying it more when I was no longer thinking about staff recruitment to help Mother Base. That's when I think the game becomes overkill with managing MB and FOB's.
It good to help develop weapons and kit but felt it was too much especially at the start. It eases up once you progress though however until......
@@SynchroM3h Agreed. I feel like if they made a MGS6 and learned from the mistakes of this game but kept the best aspects they could have a true masterpiece. It's a very cool concept that I've not seen anywhere else.
@@travv88 That would be awesome. But until Koijima returns back to Konami, we will have to wait. Not sure how long....
Camo and Weapon customisation from MGS4.
Music from MGS1 and MGS3.
Mission Creativity from MGS V.
Story length and arc from MGS 1 / 2.
Another mission allowing you to use Metal Gear Rex / Ray.
That would be "Proper Heaven" / "Outer Haven" from a MGS view. 😄
The game of the generation for me. 10/10 gameplay. The Last of Us 2 gets runner up
Last of Us 2 is garbage. But Phantom Pain is easily game of the generation.

I’m still optimistic that one day there will be a Complete Edition for MGS5 with the third act fully implemented and the story finished as intended.
Highly doubt it unfortunately :(
Loved the game. Hated the lack of cool bosses like Snake Eater. Can't wait for the remake of it.. MGS 5 is one of my favorite games. Graohics are amazing. Story is cool. Gameplay and stealth are amazing. Love the open world. Especially the Africa setting
Probably the best Stealth Action gameplay in a game. Story was still pretty good too, even though it was short.
MGS V and Max Payne 3 are the best 3rd person shooters I've ever played from a gameplay perspective.
Facts!!! I still play this game in 2022! Kojima we need more games like this.
I don't think MGSV is that good tbh, MGS 2 and 3 still better stealth games
If they just make a fundraiser to give Kojima more time and source to perfecting it, this game could be much better.
I kinda like Tom Clancys break point better. more variety, greater scale, more immersion, and greater stealth abilities.
Breakpoint is great for sure. Won't argue with you on that, however MGS has always been the blueprint for Tom Clancy games. MGS is just its own thing while others try to make a really good versions it with different elements.
I always liked Splinter Cell and Sam Fisher better
I like how the mission briefing/cutscene are stylised more as a movie intro sequence
Still annoyed they didn't add coop in this. The fact fox engine is a pain to mod as well so modders couldn't even do it too :(
As a big Splinter Cell fan, I'm playing this for the first time right now and absolutely loving it!
I much preferred MGO2
they don't make games with these brilliant stealth mechanics these days.
This game was a masterpiece.. However, Ghost Recon Breakpoint takes the cake hands down in terms of Mil-Sim and Stealth in my humble opinion.
Just buy it on PC
@@StrengthScholar0 There's no official version on PC.
i'll never get over how this game sure has it's flaws,
yet its also the Stealth game i've dreamt of since i was a young teen.
It's perfect in it's own way and i'll be replaying it for the rest of my life.
still playing this awesome game. The gameplay is just pure perfection. And the overall feeling of the game is chilling melancholy.
I dont know how they did it. It ran perfectly in my shitty pc. This is one of the best games ive played.
Yeah I think this game is definitely the most interesting game for a remake since Konami is possibly remaking all the main line metal gear games .
Damn Metal Gear needs a film already 🙏
Nah, don’t ruin it. A movie wouldn’t do it justice.
It's called Guns of the Patriots.
Kojima, Konami, why cant we be friends and finish this masterpiece?
The MGS game defined a gaming generation. And they will never be replicated 😎
MGS5 will always be that unfinished masterpiece.
The things we lost will always linger in the phantom pain
Splinter cell chaos theory will always be the best stealth game in my eyes.
One of the best games of the generation, truly great gameplay.
MGS V and Max Payne 3 are the best 3rd person shooters I've ever played from a gameplay perspective.
Splinter Cell was Inspired By The MGS Series, OG Splinter Cell Games Were Awesome 👍🔥🔥🔥🔥😎😎😎
