A minor correction: you mention that FoxDie is causing Snake to age. This isn't the case, he's actually aging because as he's a clone, they reduced his natural lifespan genetically when they created him during The Les Enfants Terrible project, so he's just aging faster because he was made that way. The other clones (Liquid, Solidus) didn't live long enough to see the effects themselves.
Actually, Solidus did live long enough to see the effects. He's the youngest of the Big Boss clones, but he's also the only truly perfect clone, which is why he looks so old in MGS2. Also, the Terminator Cells in his body is what's causing the aging if I'm not mistaken
He may have been confused by the characters lying to you in the game claiming it is because of FoxDie he's rapidly aging. I want to say Ocelot or Big Boss tells you the truth.
Didn't either Liquid or Solidus mention this? Liquid wanted Big Boss's body to try and cure the issues he and the genome soldiers were suffering. And Solidus says 'we arent made to last' or something to that effect.
@@wullahblack6452 Having preproduction titles in the pipeline is perfectly normal (no studio can run successfully without these) and PT seemed promising and for sure wasn't actually expensive, it is after all not a full fledged game, just a concept demo. It stands to reason that he knew shit's going down and did it for this reason, one does not just run a whole studio on a single project. There's also only a small overlap between pre-production and production teams, since pre-production programming can be all manner of terrible and generally is, models, textures and animation are also very rough in comparison to the release standards and take 10+ times less effort, and concept artists are the core of it but their work is largely done when the work goes into full production; but you don't just get rid of the concept team, or you aren't going to have the next project EVER, so you have to keep them occupied.
Fighting Liquid Ocelot is the most cinematic boss fight of all time. The pay off of seeing these two brothers fist fight shirtless atop a tower, backdropped by a setting sun and amber ocean, paired with the incredible music ties everything together emotionally at the end of a 50 hour journey playing through the series. Playing It honestly felt like everything in the series had been leading up to this moment, and it was so satisfying and so right
I was so underwhelmed by it, like most of the game. I am adamant that Meryl should have died in the first game. It was the far more impactful ending. She was not needed for this game.
its the most dramatic plot ever ocelot acts both like an actual brother to the two snakes and a rival, and they seem like they're the same age too, also ocelot is the son of the boss and snake is the son of big boss, it's mindfuckery
One thing I like about the final boss fight is that when you lose and try to exit the game, Ocelot will encourage you to finish the boss fight before giving you the option to exit again.
The funny thing about the start of the game is, they actually had to cut out another 20 minute cutscene flashback and put it in the menu under the title of "mission briefing". That's just how extra this game got with the exposition dumps
Yeah that was a bit odd. I think it was the right decision from pacing standpoint though, because iirc that mission 1 briefing covers a lot of information and involves some characters that feel more naturally introduced through cutscenes in mission 1. Like I think the scene in the graveyard with Otacon, and where Snake meets Campbell on the helicopter, is a better introduction than just cutting to them on the nomad. And then Meryl gives you the deets on Ocelot when you meet up with her. I think the best way to play it is to just completely finish mission 1, and then go back and watch the mission 1 briefing afterwards. iirc it doesn't even unlock until after you've started mission 1 and saved the game, so I suspect that's what the developers probably intended people to do.
Kojima can't write for shit. Exposition dumps is what he always does. And now we're learning that the best MGS in story was because the translator took creative license to make it better.
@@IncognitoSprax during the development of mgs 1, a English writer re written most of the script to make it feel natural like when snake was asked who he kills and he gives a cold straight forward answer where's in the og he gives a philosophical expo dump, lol
@@jamariobrown-tolliver8163 Yeah that was what I was referencing. And Death Stranding was obvious to anybody that played MGS4 & 5. I on both...the storytelling was bad the further the games got.
I've said it once I'll say it again. MGS4 has the BEST idea for a sneaking game I've ever seen. Full body camo with a suit that blends into whatever you press against. Seriously the amount of missed potential for that in this game was staggering. It's a shame too once you get the mask so you can do the whole full body camo thing the game becomes one set piece after the next with very little actual sneaking and more action set pieces. I love this game but damn man, I wanted SO much more out of the sneaking gameplay.
Yeah I completely agree, the octocamo is probably the coolest gadget in a stealth game ever. It basically takes everything fun about the idea of being invisible, but then adds a bunch of limitations that prevent it from being overpowered to the point of boredom. It is genius. As you say though it's just a shame that to really enjoy the gameplay in MGS4 you pretty much have to deliberately piss around in the levels for a bit before moving to your objective (and next 20+ minute cutscene), otherwise you only get like 2-3 hours of actual sneaking gameplay in an entire playthrough. Which is obviously not great. It is a fantastic game, but definitely flawed. What it really needed imo was another gameplay heavy chapter of a similar design to chapters 1 and 2. It would still be very set piece and cutscene heavy but at least if you had one more chapter like that, maybe nearer the end of the game, it would alleviate that a little bit.
Agree with everything, all the good and the wasted potential. Mgs4 is on my short list of games i badly want remade but like recoonceptualized entirely. I genuinely think this game needed more horsepower, a revised story, and imo a wide linear type design, The initial reveal and interviews suggested more time in the middle east and an actual ability to traverse through a war torn city, using the octocamo as the new paradigm for sneaking with a 'no place to hide' environment. The game shows these flashes of brilliance, and also was good through sheer effort, like shadow moses and the liquid ocleot tekken style fight were great , crawling through the microwaves etc, was great. But the game as a stealth game, it s didn't spend enough time wit this, and the environments i wish were bigger (not open world, as i say wide linear).
I think that was the problem, the game always felt like an incredible grind that just didn't really lead anywhere satisfying gameplay wise. It was pretty much all story.
Quite literally remember getting this game in 2010 as a 19 year old and this game got me through some really hard times. I was working an absolute shitty job and was emotionally "going through it" and felt hopeless a lot. Played this game and cried legitimate tears of happiness when I got to return to Shadow Moses. That entire sequence was so nostalgic for me, and I couldn't imagine not having played this game. I grew up on Metal Gear Solid and FFVII and I believe that whole shadow moses/metal gear showdown was one of the best moments in video game history. I still think about this game to this day
Im around the same age (graduated high school in 2009) and both those games were a huge part of my childhood too that i think about often. Theyre doing us right with the ff7 remake and i pray they do the same for the metal gear series 🙏
Just going back to Shadow Moses was the biggest throwback in any video game ever at the time! Throwbacks and nods to older games weren’t done like they are now, so it was new and so emotional. My favourite game ever!
@@TheAndre8900 During cutscenes too! So if you feel the camo is a bit weird for the scene or doesn't suit it for some reason, shake the controller and you go back to default, the scenes are done in engine so it works there.
The long cutscenes never bothered me i was so invested in it i'd happily sit there and watch no matter how long they were i also fell in love with MGO2 one of my favourite multiplayer experiences ever
It was pure fan service and filled my entire 17 year old summer, truly good stuff still is, I remember crapping myself at the graphics on the egg cooking tho

Yeeees I came to see the comments straight away to see if anybody else was a mgo2 fanatic!! It was the best multiplayer game of all time¡! I met several of my best friends through it, and the aus/nz community was full of amazing people. Me and my best mate lived for mgo, every weekend was at his, playing Tournaments. The skill level required was incredibly high, the game modes were inventive and flawless, the cosmetics were great, lots of variety, with certain items only given for winning Tournaments and unique events etc. You knew a player immediately by their characters appearance. So many good maps too, and I loved the symmetrical naming (b.b, m.m, c.c) etc
@@imperfectly-balanced8861 Yeah same i met some amazing people on MGO who i still talk to now truly a fantastic time its probably the hardest i ever tried at a game to be good i had so much fun playing in tournaments i've truly never had a multiplayer experience like it before or after i loved it and i miss it.
The last boss battle made me cry when I first played this. I have played every single MGS game that has ever been made, and seeing a character I grew up with struggling like that was just brilliant by Kojima.
I can understand the issues and flaws with this game, but I don't think any other game has made me feel the same way I did when the credits rolled for a minute, just to land on big boss' name, which doesn't appear in the game, only for the realization to sink over you, and the game cuts back to one last cut scene. Holy lord, complete and utter chills.
Looking back on it, I finished it and felt content with the ending to the series. It felt like a proper finale and one I can live with, all these years later. Even with the zany, downright funny bad, and shocking moments littered throughout the game.
That's called nostalgia. Kojima is a great ideas and aesthetics man, retarded child as a writer. I still love MGS, especially 3, but 4's story is objectively poor and hilariously over indulgent. Game is still a classic despite, and it looks and sounds good even today.
I remember beating the game for the first time thinking that big boss might have appeared in one of the many cutscenes I skipped (I rented the game for the weekend.)
Kojima made some of the most in depth game mechanics when it comes to weapons, menus, systems etc it's pretty impressive. Mgs4 and 5 are great examples of that
That's true but unfortunately they don't really gel naturally into the gameplay. Most of it feels like extra toys you can play with, if you want to. It's just not that useful most of the time.
Finished this game last year, never played it before and was an amazing experience. More like an interactive movie, and the plot draws you in so much that you continue playing to see what happens next.
Me and my wife played through this a few years after it launched and sure, it has its issues, but it was one hell of a memorable game. The ending fucked both of us up.
That ending fight sure fucked me up so bad that I never beat the game due to how difficult it was...sitting through all the cut-scenes again if you fail. IF someone didn't upload the hour and a half long cut-scene on RUclips, I would have never have seen it.
The ending brought everything full circle in Old Snakes life. This whole game was about Snake's relationship with his father Big Boss and the bullshit that came from being his son, being used as a tool of war just like his father but being given the clarity and solace he deserves by the same man he was assigned to kill in the first place., while @ the same time Big Boss finally understanding what his mentor ( The Boss ) was trying to teach him years after her death by his own hands and ultimately understanding that war and politics fucked the whole damn world and everyone in it.
I'm actually replaying all the Metal Gear games in chronological order so this is great timing. MGS4 was actually the reason I bought a PS3, and I bought the Legacy Collection. I'm also replaying all the Hitman games in chronological order.
Around 2009 I bought the mgs4 edition of the ps3 by using my $600 stimulus check (thanks Obama) and this game blew me away, I think it still holds up really well
Correction: Liquid taking control of Ocelot via arm graph was only part of the reason, the main reason is Ocelot hypnotizing himself into believing he’s being controlled by Liquid. The same method used on Venom Snake in MGSV
And plus, the hypnosis was only AFTER 2, when he replaced Liquid’s ark graft with a prosthetic you can plainly see when he rips his shirt off in the final fight. He really _was_ possessed in 2 with the arm graft, the official MGS4 database that was launched by Konami on the PSstore alongside mgs4 confirms it.
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged I would honestly probably hate the MGS series if it was coming out now. It’s such a random mishmash of ideas just sort of grafted together. I ate it up at the time, because I was in mega weeb mode, but I don’t think that there’s any other franchise like this that I was obsessed with HARD at the time, and have absolutely no interest in revisiting now.
I loved this game as a kid, the cinematics were so satisfying to me. I actually enjoyed the lengthy scenes of battle, the sound of a gun ricocheting off a scary ass mech that makes cow noises, the details of snakes actions and careful movements, he checks a gun for traps after the geckos leave and he does it so well. Loved Dreben and his monkey.
4:59 I believe there is an Altiar costume, and there's one part where you can even do The Leap Of Faith. Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid have had a long life of Easter Eggs and Nods to one another, even in MGS3 with Snake having Fisher's Classic NVGs. And recently with Ghost Recon Wildlands and Fisher being informed of Snake's "Retirement" ("He sported a bandanna or something"). It was surreal and like the character wasn't just talking about the character of Snake, but gaming as a whole.
There is. If I remember right, there's was a promotional video for MGS4 that looked like Altiar sneaking through a crowd and the reveal at the end was Old Snake. That scene with Fisher as well, he says (to this effect) "I'm the last one left," except his tone and expression isn't bragging; he feels a loss knowing this.
The Leap of Faith was in Peace Walker IIRC, and let you acquire a cardboard box made out of hay that would let you take down enemies inside of it (heh) at the cost of a little bit of its durability. MGS4 only had the Altair costume acquired through getting an endgame ranking that required you to use cqc and slit enemy throats, or just entering a password at the menu.
Ive got that. I have the assassins creed americas collection, and i guess MGS4 senses them in my hard drive and unlocks a bunch of assassins creed stuff, the altair costume works like a rebel cloak.
@@Kinos141 The genre is practically dead. The obsession with "open worlds" is a major reason for it. MGS and Splinter Cell used to be about clever level/environment design where you were forced to use your brain a bit to get around obstacles like enemy guards, the fact they were linear and in closed worlds is what made them a consistent challenge and kept the pacing on track. MGSV being "open world" (and not even a good one, they wasted so much money and time creating those shitty barren and lifeless deserts/jungles - they could've made an excellent linear stealth game instead, with the same mechanics, whoever wanted to drive a jeep or ride a horse in an MGS game??) is one reason why it's so shit and you can bet any future Splinter Cell release will go the same way, as Ubisoft has a penchant for making shit "open world" games as well.
Am I the only one who absolutely disagrees about the Gecko's being a bad enemy design?...imo they were easily the coolest enemies both in design and especially in gameplay in the entire MGS franchise. The way you had to either avoid them at all cost or isolate one and shoot their legs to make them fall and then unload into their heads...brilliantly designed in terms of gameplay. And once you got the Railgun or Anti-Materiel Rifle you could just kill them with one well placed shot. They also look cool and unique, move around elegantly and the way they sound like cows is weirdly cool aswell especially when you hear them from a distance and they leap over the horizon towards you... I will die on this hill, MGS4 is a great game and the Gecko is an awesome enemy design
I beat this game at work, thinking "Oh, the end will be short." It was a god damn hour long cinematic, and RUclips was in its infancy at that point, so you couldn't even watch the ending online if you wanted to.
Man I kinda love Johnny tbh. The fact that he canonicsy has the shits because his body rejects nano machines even as a genome soldier is such a deep cut weird explanation that fits into the plot I can't help but appreciate the guy.
"A glorious mess" is the perfect way to describe this game. It's all over the place and doesn't always make sense, but damn is it incredibly satisfying. The final battle against Liquid Ocelot might just be my favorite boss fight of all time.
I was frustrated by that fight because it used completely unique mechanics never used in any other part of the game, so you had no idea what the controls were. The Metal Gear REX vs RAY fight was one of the single biggest bits of fun I had in the franchise. I wanted there to be a Mech Warfare game set in the MGS universe so badly after that.
Mine to. It's the music, the graphics, the lighting, the fights not challenging at all really but it's the fight cinematic's, the fact they both inject each other to carry on fighting, everything. It was awesome.
I remember getting this game right after my college graduation and yes, I was planning and eating my dinners during those long ass cinematics. Great time.
I played MGS4 a few years after release not really knowing anything about it or having any expectations. I was blown away. Probably one of the most memorable games I’ve played.
@@bldontmatter5319 i don’t think its bad but it’s definitely not for everyone. Kojima did create a huge fan base around him from this silly type of writing and there is definitely a group of people that likes this
This game was a damn good send off for Snake, it blew my mind when it came out and still have the original collectors edition. Going back to shadow moses and the ending was insane. My mount rushmore of gaming are Metal Gear Solid, Doom and Wolfenstein, it's a shame we didn't get a pc port of this masterpiece of a game.
You need a 4th game for Mount Rushmore. Mine is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Resident Evil 4, OG God of War and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, with Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, Red Dead Redemption 2, Dead Space and Bioshock as my backups.
@@Manufan-og1xg Solid Snake, Doomguy and BJ Blazkowicz are the faces on my version of Mount Rushmore, Duke Nukem would probably be number four. All the games in each series are awesome, I was busted for hacking school computers to run Doom and Wolfenstein.
Final fight between Snake and Liquid brings tears to my eyes. I think part of the reason why this game had so much emotional impact is because it's so well-designed and so deep and personal, it feels like the whole series is one huge adventure that the player has personally been on. And all the memories, the highs and lows, and the literal years of personal investment between 1 and 4's releases finally culminate in an appropriately grandiose final confrontation, in which even the HUD and BGM make you relive the journey one final time. It invokes an 'end of an era' feeling, akin to finally ending a huge chapter of your life, and brings with it all the associated melancholy and nostalgia that one would expect from doing so.
Snake vs Ocelot at the end of MGS4 is the absolute epitome of kino. The music, the choreography, the CALLBACKS, the actual boss fight… It’s all so indescribably great. Chills no matter how many times I watch it.
Honestly, Kojima just needs to start making movies. As long as some of the sequences are, the crazy stories and innovative approaches that he takes would make for an awesome cinematic experience.
Just a tiny little thing I want to call out cause I really love this bit that I didnt notice for until I was replaying the series back to back some time ago. The dwarf geckos in the shadow moses section are actually walking the routes the guards did in the first game. Just a neat something I wanted to share
Laughing Octopus: The Joy (The Boss) + Decoy Octopus Raging Raven: The Fury + Vulcan Raven Crying Wolf: Sniper Wolf + The End Screaming Mantis: The Fear + Psycho Mantis
I have fond memories of this but at the same time I haven't felt the urge to replay it since my one single playthrough on the PS3 back in the day. It's a five hour game hidden in a 10 hour movie and it's a format I ended up loathing. And it's kinda sad because the mechanics as with most MGS games are amazing. But the gameplay is just a footnote in Kojima's obsession in acting like a movie director instead of a video game one. Even more ironic that MGS5 perfected said mechanics having probably the best gameplay in the franchise on yet the game suffers because it was so rushed there's barely any story or cutscenes in it.
@@stupidskullstudios8884 Not that simple because then there's no cohesion and the character would jump from scene to scene without any transitions. It's not that I don't like story in a game, but we are talking about a game where you play for 5-10 minutes and then you sit down and watch a 30 minute video. Half of the shit you watch you could adapt into actual gameplay. But why play as Solid Snake when you can just watch him do cool stuff on his own?

A part of how memorable that crawl through the tunnel at the end is because you had to mash the button so much. It gets ridiculous. It’s experiencing minor joint pain while your on screen counter part is cooking alive.
I tried to die in that tunnel a couple of times, but I couldn’t stop pushing buttons and keep the joystick full toward. I don’t know if that is even possible.
My last few months of college reminded me of that scene. I was taking 18 credits and all my professors were throwing term papers and assignments and projects at me, all while I was trying to study for finals, and work a job to pay the bills. It was a real crucible.
a really fun little kojima detail is in that one trailing the guy level youre actually being trailed as well by a "man" in a trenchcoat but its actuallty just three dwarf geckos in a trenchcoat funny and cool at the same time you can see him peeking around corners behind you so often but its very VERY subtle
My favourite MGS. Just absolutely love everything about it. Especially the soft disclosure of real technology like nanotech in humans connected to an A.I. system.
Soft… disclosure? Why would a video game developer have anything to disclose about nanomachines? I don’t know what you mean, and I’m a bit concerned what your answer would be.
@@evshrug Soft disclosure is when a writer puts real life phenomenon into their fiction. In 2008, nanotechnology inside human bodies was considered a conspiracy theory although many militaries around the world were either researching it or actually utilising it. There were many whistleblowers at the time. Kojima put it in his game under the guise of fiction. Nowadays, nanotechnology used for biometric monitoring is a commonly accepted technology used by many militaries around the world. That's what soft disclosure is. Always remember, military technology is at least decades beyond what is made available to the public. I'm not sure why my response would concern you. I'm just explaining that Kojima was most likely aware of these technologies ahead of the mainstream. When you look at the content of his previous games, it's obvious that he has a deep interest in clandestine military activity and was most likely aware of nanotechnology in it's early stages.
I always felt what this game needed was a mgs peace walker style structure where you could do dozens of side missions within the same environments and gameplay systems, just with different routes blocked, enemy placements, maybe weapon restrictions. The gameplay systems were really good in mgs4, we just weren't given enough stuff to do with them.
I feel like mgsv did the exact opposite, with too many things to do with the gameplay systems but with too few actually different scenarios, instead of a more confined space that had been fully developed. I feel like Infinite Heaven almost completely fixed these issues, but the lack of emotional connections to the custom side Ops make them feel like a chore to play after some time.
I miss Metal Gear Online exactly because of the gameplay systems this game had. A shame, maybe if it had been up to Kojima prod. it could have turned better. MGS4 was around when Konami started milking the cow too much.
Back when this game came out…I was like 12 years old and my brother was 13 or so….we shared a PS3 and would trade off playing this game for 1 hour at a time each before kicking one another off for “my turn”. We had watched our much older brother play through the story previously so we already knew it so…we would literally beat MGS4 over and over, week after week for months and it would only take around 5-6 hours per run because we skipped cut scenes. I remember specifically for the Raiden/Vamp fight we would watch each other play so we could fully pay attention to the cut scene of their fight while the one playing killed the Geckos 😂. It was one of like three games we had at the time and we didn’t care to ask for more. Watching this brought back so many memories since I haven’t played it in maybe 8 years at this point. Super pumped to experience 4 specifically with these re-releases coming out this next year. Whole series will hold a deep place in my heart as a gamer ❤
No one expected Solid to be the last Snake standing. He proved his worth by even surpassing Big Boss. He was inferior to the other clones but he made his own path and never gave up. A true legend. " Excellent Snake. Age hasn't slowed you down one bit."
Like all things Kojima; he raises some incredible points on the nature of warfare and society that makes you think for years afterward... but carpets it in So. Much. Talking. That. You. Fall. Asleep. Listening. To. It. Case in point: Kojima predicted today's fake news and social media obsession all the way back in MGS2. Its actually outstanding how much he got right in retrospect. Its just that you had to pay attention to hours of the Colonel's lip flaps as he droned on whilst your controller turned itself off.
What I've always found so bizarre is that he has indeed made some hitting points in warfare. But damn the plot, characters etc. They're just so ridiculous. I don't find stuff appealing at all. Exact opposite most of the time. Also many titles seem to try to take themselves seriously and then throw stupid and downright childish stuff at player. I just don't get it. It was the perfect and greatest final game to a franchise. I don’t see it as a mess. It almost as if MGS4 was ahead of its time and used meme-like easter eggs to spice up the experience. A true fan service for long time fans.
the most inexplicably bizarre part of this game is the second johnny took off his mask and it was revealed he was absurdly handsome he immediately became a super badass and started killing everybody. Maybe the sunglasses were obscuring his vision idk
The game was WAY ahead of its time. The weapon customization is STILL better than most shooters out there in terms of scope and variety of kit. Also, Hideo Kojima's worldview had a massive influence on my life.
When this game first came out, I thought "war economy" was such a ridiculous phrase invented by some wacky Japanese game producer. Then I grew older and realized he was right all along, the only reason wars are fought is to enrich some rich assholes.
In regards to the enemy always calling in reinforcements when you’re caught, it now makes me think of all the times in rpg’s where there’s a military faction you have to interact with but they are always short handed and spread thin. Now it makes sense. Its because they’re sending all there guys at the drop of a hat when they spot a single badass spy that’s infiltrating them.
The fact this never got a re-release on PS4 is absolutely criminal by Konami. How could they not hire Bluepoint to port it over and at least up-res it and leave the rest in tact? I still can.. not.. BELIEVE IT.
One issue is Kojima's obsession with blowing money for no reason what so ever. If Konami were to re-release the game, they'd have to pay for every license for each of the songs in the game, licenses for all of the real weapons, etc.
@@wullahblack6452 The main reason why MGS4 will probably never get a remastered release on newer consoles/PC is because it was developed from the ground up exclusively for the PS3's hardware like the cell processor, etc. One of the reasons the Xbox 360 was the 'lead' console for that generation was because the PS3 was more difficult to develop games on and it's why so many cross-platform games were inferior on the PS3, it only picked up steam later on that generation. They'd basically have to remake MGS4 and that'd cost too much money. They'd be better off just making a whole new MGS game or remaking one of the older MGS games that would benefit much more from modern graphics and gameplay mechanics.
I always loved that the BB unit were essentially combinations of past bosses. The Joy (the Boss) and Decoy Octpus making up Laughing Octopus, The Fury and Raven making up Raging Raven (and the harrier fight as you mentioned), the Sorrow and Sniper Wolf making up Crying Wolf (followed by yet another scene of Otocon losing a love of his), and the Fear and Psycho Mantis making up Screaming Mantis made for an excellent method of nostalgic gameplay without necessarily revisiting those characters except for Mantis showing up with a cameo from Hideo’s voice as “god”. One of my favorite parts of this game, honestly. 3:50 “Did we really need to see the guy battered around like this?” Yes.
It don’t even sound like he likes the game lol. I get having critiques of the game, but i can’t remember a single positive thing he said about the game

It's a mess, but we still love it. I'm still amazed on how "realistic" it was during it's time. COD4 was out around the same time and just the equipment and weapons was advanced for any MGS game at the time. Not sure if you are recording on RPCS3, but it looks beautiful
I remember playing through the shadow moses part and piloting the metal gear and everything. I literally started crying from joy. It was definitely a walk down memory lane. And the final fight with ocelot. A masterpiece. I didnt even know you could buy ammo and stuff from drebbins. I never sold him anything and pretty much only used the stuff the game just gave to you.
I remember after completing this game, I went around sneaking wishing my entire body would change to the texture I'm leaning against. Octo-camo is so awesome.
I absolutely adore the music in this game. It just has this feel to it that no other game has. It's this beautiful, serene music that elevates the game
I remembered when I was 14 I played this game over & over again after going back to school for no reason, just to re-experience the whole thing again When I found out there's a hidden reward when beating the game in big boss extreme without deaths killing etc, it really reignited my already love for the game. I spent 3 whole months playing non stop to get that big boss title, mainly stuck in the motorcycle chase with Big Mama. Cried my ass of at the final battle also. Truly a once in a lifetime gaming experience
Everyone hated this game when it came out. I loved it. This is the true ending to the series in my eyes. The ending ties everything up nicely and completes the story of Snake.
@@IamaPERSON Yes mgs5 is a prequel. But because it was made after. And had a botched ending that was never fully finished / realized because Konami fired Kojima. The sad truth is that is what people connect with the MGS franchise when they talk about how Metal Gear is over and we will never get a true metal gear game again because Kojima and Konami ended things on bad terms. Where as MGS4 is a complete story and ties everything up nicely. But at the time not a lot of people played it because PS3 exclusivity. And Many more people played MGS5 because it was on all platforms.
to be fair I think the soldiers in these war zones would be pretty justified calling reinforcements upon seeing Snake considering his reputation as this legendary soldier.
Seriously. This guy took out multiple walking nuclear tanks that could wipe a continent along with countless elite soldiers and supernatural beings lol
It's 3am, and I'm sat here watching this 45min video. Normally don't watch videos this long, especially at this time, but I was really glued to it. You reminded me how good this franchise was and how memorable the characters were in it. Keep up the good work. P.S. just wish Konami would just do a remaster of the games or do a bundle collection so we can play them again on the new console. If they did that I would definitely buy a PS5.
29:10 Ya know...Johnny is still the guy who at times kept up with enhanced super soldiers in combat. He has a problem he can't help and he gets the shit kicked out of him by people ostensibly much more adept than him and still comes out golden.
The Guy actually Pretty Good, He's optimistic even though kept getting Screw over by Everyone "even the Game", But at The Final Battle he's actually A Capable Soldier, If only He get to Do more than a Running Gag, Like Getting Married to The Original Childhood Crush Of Everyone who Played The First Solid Game, That I can Respect +
Hot take, as much as Johnny only barely redeems himself from being the dude who shits his pants a lot and thinks its okay to just grope women, I think Meryl does deserve a guy that's as dedicated to her to as he is. It was made pretty clear very early that something between Snake and Meryl wouldn't work out even if Snake didn't go through accelerated aging.
My favorite thing about mission where you're following the guy through the city is there are moments where if you're attentive you can actually catch the little, circular robots following you some bit in the distance. I always found stuff like that pretty awesome.
9:58 That's the point, the game is about war and you have stock piles of weapons for the "easy" mode, but the game punishes for you that, for example you'll throw up and hear Liquid voice if you put too many soldiers down. The Tranquilizer is hard mode on purpose, and the game rewards you for that.
Fun fact: Drebin has the same VA (and appearance) as Smuggler from Deus Ex and even fills a similar role in his respective game of providing weapons and upgrades to the player.
My favourite is still 3. But 4 is a masterpiece for me because it delivers one thing many movies, games or any form of media can provide. Satisfying closure. This game proves if you cried at the end of this game, you were invested in all of the characters. Plus, kojima didn't disrespect the fans. He gave us exactly what we wanted, and he just did it in his own way. I wish Snake and Mei Ling got together, tho. But yeah, this game is the final chapter any story deserves.
"kojima didnt disrespect the fans" What if I told you he intended for snake and otacon to be executed for treason in the original ending. That was the purpose of the song Here's To You(nikola and bart) but Hayter and the team thought that was disrespectful for the fans LOL
@@Subsistence97 I heard that was a rumour. That never happened. But it was known that snake was supposed to die in the original script. That gun he put in his mouth was supposed to be the original ending. It would make sense snake killing himself after all the crap he went through. But that would have been fucking disrespectful. David fought not for snake dying. That's how the epilogue was invented I believe. That's the article I saw. I never came across the treason thing.
@@kazumajay thought that the original ending was because Otacon and Snake turned themselves into NATO since they were technically eco-terrorists. That's how they were exectuted and the song "Here's To You" was playing. Hayter didn't fight it sonce he wasn't in the writing team, but the dev team thought it was too sad.
@@kazumajay MGS3 is indeed the best one. That is because its story is self-contained, making it a cohesive experience. MGS4's story is like a fanfic, trying too hard to wrap around all the games and tie all the edges for all the characters.
41:30 I remember seeing this for the first time thinking "oh please inject each other... AMAZING :D" Ocelot chewed the scenary so well. Game is a pure trip. I mean I got confused a bunch by the plot but it is all so ridiculously fun and like (for better or worse) it doesn't seem like there a script editor lol Fully agree with the last fight being amazing. The way the hud changes with each section. Love it :D Shame it is locked to the PS3 tho. Deserves a remaster.
I remember completing this game at 11pm and super happy.... little did I know I wouldn't be going to bed until 1am. I've always thought Jonny is the Patches of the MGS series
@@stfustfu7765 meh, all of these things are subjective in a variety of ways. 75% of Zeldas totally live up to the hype. TLOU2 absolutely lived up to the hype AND controversy to me. Elden Ring. Monster Hunter World if you are just looking at hype within specific circles of a niche. Pokemon Gold/Silver totally lived up to the hype post Blue/Red.
My favourite entry in the series. I've played them all a lot since childhood and think this is the perfect ending. The story is so epic and the fanservice is on point. Never understood the hate for this game.
The cutscenes, just badly done with the pacing but other than that it's a great game, but it's pretty easy to understand why it was a frustrating experience for a lot of people.
11:55 the way I've always thought of it is: snake is literally on the top 10 most wanted for being a "terrorist" (due to MGS2's tanker sequence), so it's not: "hey there is a strange soldier here, call in all reinforcements", it's more "Hey, we've just got positive ID on Bin Ladan, send everyone! (what do you mean everyone?) EVERYONE!." < bonus points if you get that reference.
I love Metal Gear Solid. But, I'm not surprised to hear Oscar Isaacs say "we're searching for the story" in regard to the film. The themes of MGS are superb and gameplay is some of the best I've played. However, the story telling is all over over place and then some. Thank god the voice actors are so talented because Hideo Kojimas dialogue is not the best.
42:25 He did but the original Rising game was set between MGS2 and 4. Kojima realised the team couldn't make a proper game other than the zandatsu concept they had come up with so he gave it to Platinum who decided to set it 4 years after MGS4 because they didn't want to be creatively limited to the confines of 2 existing games. Originally, MGS4 was supposed to be the send-off for all the characters
I remember playing through this multiple times trying to get Big Boss Extreme Rank. Managed to do it after two runs.. The first run failing after I was spotted.. ONCE during the final segment.. The second playthrough I managed to save each chapter to fail safe if I get spotted to replay the chapter. But man best gaming days of my life!.. & The multiplayer mod was King!
The kicker is: Hideo just anounced he will return to Tactical Espionage Action after DS2.......and it will blur the line between movie and game.....so the title of "Best Direct To Console Film" might might not yet be decided.
Leaving out Raiden and Snakes emotional moment after his arms are cut off and then channeling the electricity in the room while saying "I am lightning" is just criminal. Kojima really outdid himself with those game on every level
I love your videos. Great break downs. You nail everything. Also, hearing an Aussie talk with such casual lingo and slang is perfect for me. Keep it up mate. You're doing great. Top shit. Yeah nah yeah cobber.
The way you describe that fight between Ocelot and Snake reminds me of the first time I ever beat Halo: Combat Evolved. The first time I ever had to drive that POS Warthog through that obstacle course, all while the ship blew up around me and the absolutely exquisite original Halo theme boomed in the background. Moments like those are what really makes games stick with you. As you put it, "kino" moments.
The plot was all over the place. My suspension of disbelief was stretched to their limits if it didn't out break. Some characters acted out-of-character or regressed in some cases, and most of it is exposition dumps. But darn it if it isn't peak-Metal Gear for me. David Hayter and all the other actors are giving it their all. It wonderfully ties up all the games up to that point, and darn it if the final boss battle doesn't exemplify that. MGS4...You're pretty good.
When I was a teen I used to play this at night after my siblings went to sleep since then I didnt have to share the console, and I would always fall asleep during the ending cutscene without fail. I tried beating the final level and staying awake like 6 times before I gave up and just watched it on RUclips. Edit: Oh god I forgot about those installation screens before each act
6:26 the octo camouflage tech was on of the coolest mgs moments in its whole history. Breakthrough vs the optic camouflage. I still remember the first time I saw the trailer and was blown away by it.
The Gekko are awesome. Their legs are made of synthetic flesh and they bleed. That's insanely creepy. Also, most likely exists in some deep underground military lab somewhere.
Was my first Metal Gear I played as a child. Would look up cutscenes of the series story leading up to it each day. This title to me, while not perfect, made me want to be lover of series for life. Thanks for doing this.
Dude same! I played this game when I was 8 and became obsessed with how cool Snake was as a character and was curious to play the other games. Kinda weird how this was our first game in the series, considering we'd have to go backwards in the series to understand all the instances of fan service in this game lol.
I always felt that the final fight was kind of about Snake literally beating the "Hypnotherapy" out of Ocelot to turn Liquid back into Ocelot (hence the transition from Liquid to Liquid-Ocelot and then finally Ocelot). I loved MGS 4 and it's my second favourite after MGS 3, but I do agree that there was a ton of missed potential with how much thought was put into the stealth mechanics, with not enough gameplay to explore these mechanics with. I also feel your pain for the on-rails bike chase sequence; I died countless times there chasing that Big Boss rank. The Solar gun was about the only thing that made that sequence tolerable, though I found out later that the auto-targeting feature supposedly makes that part much more manageable.
8:23: It had no responsibility to tie up all those "loose ends." The game would have benefited by leaving most of them open and then having more time to tell a cohesive story. Most of them weren't even loose ends or plotholes or whatever. Like, I didn't need to know that nanomachines made Vamp a vampire.
For those who’ve actually played the game, initially it feels like a *Glorious Mess* but once you get absorbed into the game, you’ll quickly realize that the game what you presumed to be a Mess is actually the MASTERPIECE.

Remember snake have terminal lumbago
I'm genuinely upset you got the aging thing wrong.
@@Kono_Dio-Da Ha, Terminator. Kojima sure loves his movies.
Didn't either Liquid or Solidus mention this? Liquid wanted Big Boss's body to try and cure the issues he and the genome soldiers were suffering. And Solidus says 'we arent made to last' or something to that effect.
Wait - which Snake do you play as in 4? Just “Snake”?
"No place for Hideo" was a masterful foreshadowing of what would happen later between Konami and Kojima.
"You're fired!"
Kinda yes, but Hideo wanted to stop making MGS games since MGS 2 in 2002. He predicted the future by looking at the past.
The guy wasted money and resources and used MGS5 money to make his PT nonsense on the side. They were right to shitcan him.
@@wullahblack6452 Is there proof kojima used the budget for mgsv on pt?
One thing I like about the final boss fight is that when you lose and try to exit the game, Ocelot will encourage you to finish the boss fight before giving you the option to exit again.
hmmm… sounds familiar
Why are you gay
Death stranding is even worse
*NEW GAME PLUS IS REQUIRED FOR A FULL EXPERIENCE*
Honestly it was a lot of fun to use in the multiplayer when playing the game mode where you had to steal dog tags

The OctoCamo suit that changed depending on the surface you were on was one of the coolest features in the series.
Yes very cool. Very nice on the old Snake
And if you shake the controller left/right the octocamo resets from whatever has changed to the default shade of dark blue. Neat.
@@TheAndre8900 During cutscenes too! So if you feel the camo is a bit weird for the scene or doesn't suit it for some reason, shake the controller and you go back to default, the scenes are done in engine so it works there.

The whole world held its breath at that point.
Fucked me up
I remember beating the game for the first time thinking that big boss might have appeared in one of the many cutscenes I skipped (I rented the game for the weekend.)
Kojima made some of the most in depth game mechanics when it comes to weapons, menus, systems etc it's pretty impressive. Mgs4 and 5 are great examples of that
Nice berserk pfp :)

That's true but unfortunately they don't really gel naturally into the gameplay. Most of it feels like extra toys you can play with, if you want to. It's just not that useful most of the time.
Kojima has got to be the most overrated developer of all time.
He really didn't though. It's all been clunky for 25 years.
This is good... Isn't it? Drops cigar 😭 also love you avalanche! Replaying resident evil 2 on my ps3 right now!
Nice to see you here avalanche
Avalanche! You rock, and also I pretty much feel the exact same. That ending, sheesh 😢
The epilogue is worth it alone for the moment when Otacon says "Snake... had a hard life"
This is good... Isn't it? Always gets me.
I’m not ashamed to admit when I first beat the game that that part where Otacon explains to Sunny why Snake’s not with them choked me the fuck up.

Correction: Liquid taking control of Ocelot via arm graph was only part of the reason, the main reason is Ocelot hypnotizing himself into believing he’s being controlled by Liquid. The same method used on Venom Snake in MGSV
Ocelot used MAGIC
And plus, the hypnosis was only AFTER 2, when he replaced Liquid’s ark graft with a prosthetic you can plainly see when he rips his shirt off in the final fight. He really _was_ possessed in 2 with the arm graft, the official MGS4 database that was launched by Konami on the PSstore alongside mgs4 confirms it.

they use nanomachines and mind control
I loved this game as a kid, the cinematics were so satisfying to me. I actually enjoyed the lengthy scenes of battle, the sound of a gun ricocheting off a scary ass mech that makes cow noises, the details of snakes actions and careful movements, he checks a gun for traps after the geckos leave and he does it so well. Loved Dreben and his monkey.
It would've been acceptable if some of the cutscenes were playable.
Dreben was a really cool addition to the series and one of the characters I really hoped we'd get more of (never enuff Solid or Big Boss though)
@@josephmahar8809 True. IRL, stealth games are losing it's momentum. The fact that Fisher said that is meta commentary.
"a trainwreck still worth seeing" might be the best MGS4 description ever. I miss Super Bunny Hop.

I beat this game at work, thinking "Oh, the end will be short."
It was a god damn hour long cinematic, and RUclips was in its infancy at that point, so you couldn't even watch the ending online if you wanted to.
Remember when watching a video over 5 minutes was insane on RUclips lol. If I saw a video that was 10 mins long I was like nope.
You thought a metal gear solid ending would be short?
I remember RUclips back then where the cutscenes alone were cut into 50 parts with each part consisting of 10 mins max

Man I kinda love Johnny tbh. The fact that he canonicsy has the shits because his body rejects nano machines even as a genome soldier is such a deep cut weird explanation that fits into the plot I can't help but appreciate the guy.
I also genuinely liked Meryl and Johnny talking about wedding plans as they were shooting the soldiers. I thought it was pretty hilarious and stylish.
@@TheDrunkEuropid oh definitely. That whole scene had Mr & Mrs Smith vibes.
"A glorious mess" is the perfect way to describe this game. It's all over the place and doesn't always make sense, but damn is it incredibly satisfying. The final battle against Liquid Ocelot might just be my favorite boss fight of all time.
Same here mate. I was basically in tears while playing it.
God that fight is so damn good
I was frustrated by that fight because it used completely unique mechanics never used in any other part of the game, so you had no idea what the controls were.

Chills no matter how many times I watch it.
i thought it was silly. Two old men fighting, lol.

Just a tiny little thing I want to call out cause I really love this bit that I didnt notice for until I was replaying the series back to back some time ago. The dwarf geckos in the shadow moses section are actually walking the routes the guards did in the first game. Just a neat something I wanted to share
Laughing Octopus: The Joy (The Boss) + Decoy Octopus
Raging Raven: The Fury + Vulcan Raven
Crying Wolf: Sniper Wolf + The End
Screaming Mantis: The Fear + Psycho Mantis
I mean you can skip all the cutscenes if you just want the gameplay.
@@stupidskullstudios8884 in the case of any MGS game, the cutscenes are too important, so skipping them ruins the game experience here
@@stupidskullstudios8884 Not that simple because then there's no cohesion and the character would jump from scene to scene without any transitions. It's not that I don't like story in a game, but we are talking about a game where you play for 5-10 minutes and then you sit down and watch a 30 minute video. Half of the shit you watch you could adapt into actual gameplay.

My favourite MGS. Just absolutely love everything about it. Especially the soft disclosure of real technology like nanotech in humans connected to an A.I. system.
“It’s all just so fucking hysterical!”

The gameplay systems were really good in mgs4, we just weren't given enough stuff to do with them.
correct

The fact this never got a re-release on PS4 is absolutely criminal by Konami. How could they not hire Bluepoint to port it over and at least up-res it and leave the rest in tact? I still can.. not.. BELIEVE IT.
A port of the HD collection trilogy is more important i think, waiting for that for years, heard it was on PSnow but didnt know until it was gone

I like how snake's stress slowly increases watching her dance and sing
38:51 this point and the final fight made me cry my heart out 😭. This will always be one of my favorite games groing up.
Thank you Kojima.
For those who’ve actually played the game, initially it feels like a *Glorious Mess* but once you get absorbed into the game, you’ll quickly realize that the game what you presumed to be a Mess is actually the MASTERPIECE.
