    ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RUclips and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

That was so cool! That barn is ridiculous. Is it my imagination, or are those sheep really calm? And quiet! They have their own little paved walkway down the side of the road? I can't stop laughing! They look like commuters on the subway, heading to the office for the day. Hysterical! Breed really does make a difference, doesn't it?

Really enjoyed your Icelandic experience, interesting landscape there some of it not unlike the island off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada where my mother was born. My grandparents never had to cut grass on their property as it seemed every fisherman on that island had a couple or more sheep. They would roam across the island, we would hear them in the morning before we got out of bed and there would be the evidence that yes indeed we had visitors. My grandmother had 2 spinning wheels, so I imagine in the winter she was busy spinning yarn and knitting...that memory was 50 years ago. I recently went to that island to take my niece there and to visit my grandparents and uncles headstones, the cemetery was waist high with dead grass, no sheep in sight. Later we did see a few but belonging to a farmer in his fields no roaming these days. OMG Yes nothing like a good soak in a hot tub, my cousin's wife is also an old nurse. Don't think there is a nurse our age who doesn't have back issues. We were the lifts before the electric ceiling lifts they have today. Looks like a nice place over there, but a bit on the "chilly" side. People seemed lovely.

Thanks for the series in Iceland! It's fun to see how they do it in the country of origin for the breed. I would have liked to see more about how they handle rams there. The shots in passing made them seem so calm (as did the ewes.) My Icelandic rams try to hit me every time I go in a pen with them, especially when they're with the ewes. Maybe they get wilder after a several generations in Minnesota?

Is it inappropriate to ask how they can afford such state of the art barns to winter house their sheep? I follow several Icelandic and Norwegian farms and the barns are always spectacular. I can’t figure out how they have access to such amazing functional technology for pen systems. Maybe it’s all the money they save not having to feed them or manage them during the grazing season? What is the wool like? It was gorgeous when they were moving. I do feel for them that they go from that toasty fleece to being sheared to the skin, especially this time of the year. Depending on when we could get shearer, I sheared anywhere from March and into April. April was cutting it close to lambing. Wyoming winters can be brutal with temperatures getting down to minus 20 to 40 degrees and then winds can freeze your eyes closed. I am curious, do shearers have the vehicle breakdowns that cause the sheep owners curse them, when they have a crew of volunteers and the sheep penned and hungry?

The ideal time to shear for a long winter housing, and the ideal time to get the best quality wool off the sheep when the growth of the fleece is not stressed by the demands of pregnancy. Important to have a shed with no draughts at lower level.

The only sheep you will find Icelan is Icelandic sheep. Meat might be a different story. There are laws against importing sheep to Iceland. Due to diseases, many countries make it extremely difficult and time consuming to bring in “foreign” animals. America uses Southram AI Station in Iceland to import straws of semen to keep flocks genetically diversified.
