Fast and furious fantasies and acceleration away from the police in a movie car chase like James Bond 007 to Jason Statham in the Transporter seriesmake you believe that you can hide your license plate to evade the police. However, in real life people have claimed to use stealth plates to avoid tolls and not get arrested, and some have been caught. Obscuring plates is highly illegal, but for an exercise with the Procharged Mustang GT Smurrf we installed a stealth plate from amazon to see how effective it was and go in depth to mythbust this weird gadget. For $150 dollars you could see if this is even possible - so we took one for the team and tried it out.

Try mythbusting some of the other methods for hiding plates that aren't as blatantly illegal. There are sprays and covers that are supposed to make it hard to read the plate. When I lived in Colorado people would run purple or blacklight bulbs as their plate lights, because it clashed with the green and white plates so badly it was hard to read.

This would actually work for youtubers who use their RUclips name plate at shows and for pictures. Compared to removing plates and swapping over custom one. Just use the sticker idea to make it faster and easier

2 things can happen
1 the police officer will definitely hear the plate hiding and you get busted or 2 they will definitely notice that the thing looks gigantic for a license plate and you get busted

I had a buddy who had been drinking and smoking all night, he got lit up and made the genius descision to run, he ran for like 40 minutes with 5 or more cops on him, crashed into a pole or tree or something, got out ran into the woods and called a friend to pick him up a few blocks away. He got home reported the car stolen ans got away with it.

I have always added an inch wedge of plastic or wood behing the top of my lic plate . It tilts the plate down , bouncing the radar signal down, instead of back to the device. Does NOT "deface" or obstruct the plate!

The plate flipper ones are better because you won't visibly stand out for not having a plate when you want your main one hidden. You just flip it to a fake or show plate instead....

I feel like after 182 likes I'm missing something, but wouldn't you only need this kind of protection when you're standing out to the cops for doing something illegal? The blank space is as good as a fake plate at that point because it takes 2 seconds to lower the shade and the cop probably isn't behind you in 2 seconds. Unless the cop is already behind you before you commit a crime then you really wouldn't need this (I look behind me before taking off like a bat out of hell personally). Plus the added risk of running a fake plate with a cop behind you is enough to get you pulled over without racing and is probably a pretty gnarly offense. Just curious if someone could give me a scenario because I can't think of one.
they're only illegal if you use them on the public roads with the intent of hiding your plate; no law saying you can't install them on your car 👀😉😁😁

Depends on the state you live in. In some states a license plate frame other than a dealer installed frame is illegal. Nobody really cares, except the federal government. There's a 99% chance you'll never get a ticket for it.
I never said i wouldn't use it, because I would despite it being illegal, but you would only get done for actually using it not for having one on your car, that's my point.
License Plate covers are supposed to be used for photos and identity protection when not driving or leaving your vehicle parked. Car meets is a good place to check people’s cars and take photos without having to edit the picture and blur the license plate which is a hassle. Also leaving your car unattended so that it doesn’t get stolen or copied by a stranger who has the same car and color as yours.
If u leave car unattended they just break the hider and playe off ur car lol

A local guy here just recently got arrested for having one on his car. He was illegally using the lane for cars that had a fast lane permit to cross the toll bridge. He would block his plate so the cameras wouldn't get his plate. So they had an unmarked police car waiting for him (or a car matching the description). The police witnessed him blocking his plate and busted him.

A friend sent me this video after he got his license suspended and arrested with this product. Arrested because he tried to run.
Massive flaw is that it obstructs the plate registration sticker. If a certain amount of the plate is obstructed, you’re getting pulled over.
You should print a custom fake plate out of vinyl and attach it to the screen. So when you close it it’s still a plate, just a fake one so you don’t draw attention to yourself.

A lot of people take theirs plates off at car shows, they don’t want people to get their info and get robbed. This would be a great thing for this! Has multiple legal uses!
I feel like this would be good if you travel between states a lot, and you go from a 1 plate state to a 2 plate state, that way when you go to the 1 plate, you can close it at the front to keep the clean look at the front, and then open it back up in the 2 plate

I've made several of these over the past 45 years super easy, I used gas tank cover license plate mounts with a vacuum motor to pull it up, worked great
If you're looking to hide your plate use IR leds. It will hide it from cameras and no one will ever be able to tell, that's what I allegedly use. Since that is gonna break pretty quick especially since water can get in.
Doesn't work on cameras with IR filters.

I can see this being very useful for those that want to have their cars be private and not be scoped by cops when parked so maybe it activated when the car is not being driven and then once the car is driven the license plate is revealed

Where I live, you'd get pulled over and have your car searched just because of the frame around that thing. They will say that it "partially obscures" the digits on the license plate even if it's nowhere near touching them. It's one of those "I wanna pull you over but dot have a real reason" things like "a tree hanging off your mirror is a driving distraction".

Not sure a toll is the proper use for this. In my state, state troopers are positioned on the bridges and tunnels that have tolls. They receive pictures in their patrol cars of unreadable plates and they routinely pull ppl over on the bridges and outside the tunnels.
Yeah you may get away with it like once then they'll be searching for a car of your description to bust you, 100% agreed.
End up with a huge couple of fines plus paying for this thing, all to save $1.50 lol

I like the one that folds under the grill. I wouldn’t use it for tolls bc minnesota doesn’t deal with them, but i would use it for car shows or going to the track.
I paid $80.00 for mine (Took some searching on the net) and routed the wires along the license plate light's power wire (no need to drill any holes) and it works great for times I'm driving through neighborhoods that have speed cameras. I drive fast on the highway but don't purposely drive over the speed limit on neighborhood streets). I've been trying to buy the license plate "flippers" for 2 years now for less than the ludicrous asking price of $150.00 for only one. I've made many offers for the full set of two only to be turned down until last week. I paid $130.00 for a set of two! I intend on installing my plate as the main plate and a hot rod club plate (which my club offers it's members to use as a front plate) as my second plate, front and rear. If I ever am questioned by the police, I'll simply show my membership card and explain that I must've either hit the button accidentally while entering my vehicle or just forgot to return the tags to normal position after leaving one of our car shows. I'll post a video of the flipper in action after it arrives and has been installed. The wiring and remotes are identical to the ones shown in the above video. The only things that are different are the frames which flip one tag over to show another. Some of us guys never completely grow up, we just love our gadgets and toys lol.
