as crocheted clothing has become more trendy, i would just like to remind everyone that crochet is a highly technical skill that can only be done by hand. most people who can make things like patchwork cardigans have been practicing and honing that skill for years (like the op says they have). to ask someone to spend at least a dozen hours (probably more) making a custom piece of clothing to your measurements for less than a couple hundred dollars is fucking insane. but because crochet is seen as a 'relaxing hobby' and fast fashion has warped our expectations in such a drastic way, people feel entitled to items that are clearly worth hundreds of dollars for as much as you might spend at a pacsun. absolutely the fuck not the asshole.

as someone who's been very overweight and quite thin at different points in my adult life, I would never DREAM of commenting on another person's body. Ever. When I was bigger, I was terrified of anyone commenting on my body because I was convinced that everyone noticed my size and thought I was gross (obviously irrational as I never thought of other people's size, other than constantly feeling the biggest in the room and worrying about comments on my own body, but I guess ED brain is irrational). When I was smaller, I STILL thought way, because I had no concept of my actual size (again, ED brain). I'm not at my heaviest now but definitely plus size, and I have a much better idea of what I really look like vs what I feel like, but I remember so vividly feeling the same way even when I was almost at an unhealthy low weight. You never know what's going on in someone's life, whether they've gained or lost weight due to an ED, cancer, depression, stress, etc etc etc.

The first story you read the title of reminds me of a story on AITA where OP was tired of their coworker stealing food from them(which they told the person many time to not steal their food). Their coworker was proud Muslim so they put pork in their sandwich thinking the coworker won't eat it and they could eat it that day. But the coworker ate it and halfway realized it had pork and started yelling at OP and reported them. Like if you have restrictions on what you can eat, don't be surprised when you steal food and it's not to your standards

Same thing happened to my friend. He had a Muslim coworker who would always come over and take food (that he bought) from his plate in the cafeteria. He told her politely to stop and she got offended, said he was selfish, and always gave him stink eye after that. I think muslims have a strong sense of community, but when you move to another country, you can't assume that other ppl share your values. Like, make it make sense.

Abso-fucking-lutely. I've been overweight my whole life, and I used to be the "skinny bitches should eat a sandwich" type of person. It's genuinely just as toxic.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I feel like the bully is thinking, "Well, I know this girl's thinking/saying horrible things about me and my weight, since she's really skinny and especially since we work at a cupcake shop, so I'll just get out in front of her." She thinks she's taking power away from this new skinny girl who she assumes will be horrible to her, but all she's doing is antagonizing and being exactly like all the people who have ever been dicks about her appearance.

    • @inmyworldkindagirl
      @inmyworldkindagirl Год назад +26

Exactly. How is being called too fat different from being called too skinny? Some ppl have high metabolisms, EDs, have medication side effects, etc. that make it so they cannot possibly gain more weight even if they eat a lot. There's just as much stigma around ppl who are so skinny you can see every bone as there is for overweight ppl. You just see more fat ppl in America than skinny ones, so it's more common to hear fatphobic remarks than antiskinny ones. And that coworker calling her "slim" is not a compliment. It's a slight because she is jealous of her. She's quite literally putting her down to make herself feel better about being overweight. How bout just don't comment on ppl's bodies, period. Especially when you just met them. That coworker was incredibly rude and entitled, and she deserved it nothing more and nothing less than what she got.
      Sincerely, one of those "toothpicks."

As someone who was always very skinny as a child, you get called out on you weight constantly. I've been told "are you starving yourself", "you'd be so pretty if you weren't so skinny", "eat a sandwich", "your skin and bones, it freaks me out", and so much more like . mind you I did not have an eating disorder and I was a healthy weight. Anytime I've brought up people shaming my body like that I've been told it's a compliment or it's not as bad as being shamed for being fat. I am now overweight as an adult and have been body shamed for that. To me it's the same. It's not okay to talk about people's body's negatively at any weight

They will also get jealous of their partners' relationships with other people. The guy's mom in case #2 is also almost certainly a narcissist...speaking anecdotally as a guy who has dealt with that. Yes, fatphobia is ostensibly the worst of the weight shaming options, but not by far enough that bullying someone for being thin is incomparable. Regardless of how society views weight, interpersonally it is SO damaging to be bullied for it.
And it’s very lofty to suggest taking the high road but that’s just respectability politics and let’s be very real for a minute, bullies only get defeated on their own turf and you don’t owe ANYONE the other cheek. I’m glad she retaliated in kind, fuck that other girl

I love this episode alot, there was just one thing that didnt sit right with me. Which was the weight thing. As someone who is severely underweight and suffers from a very hard and complicated eating disorder called Arfid, that story stuck with me. All my life ive been called “thin” or “a stick” or what have you, and it is genuinely hurtful. I dont want to be skinny. I hate how i look, when i look in the mirror i see a skeleton. Im unhealthy, i lost a big chunk of my hair last year due to not eating, and overall it has effected my muscles and bones, im frail and my body always hurts.
The person who was telling their story could very well be in the same shoes as me and we wouldnt know. And it is just as hurtful to have your weight be pointed out to you if even if youre underweight and not overweight. It leads to alot of health and self image issues all together
My biggest trigger is hearing being called thin is a compliment. Because i am slowly dying because my body refuses to consume food like a normal person. Society has painted being physically unwell and literally killing yourself as beauty, and it is terrifying.
Being underweight is just as serious as being overweight. And its not being taken as seriously because again, its seen as beautiful.
    Thats all

Now, i don’t love being told that i’m underweight and should eat a sandwich or whatever, but i would absolutely rather that then when i’m complimented on being skinny. i HATE more than anything, the fact that the way that i look is unhealthy, is glossed over and considered desirable by people. it’s so damaging being told that people wish they looked like me. makes me doubt whether i should be actively trying to better myself and my physical health. i can’t even imagine how much more harmful that kind of remark is to someone with a body image based eating disorder. having already thought that they need to look thinner, and then being told that they look like a model or something. our society is so fucked.

From the other side of things, comments about being skinny can be just as awful as those about being fat. The difference is people recognize it as insulting when the person is fat and don't when they are skinny.
I had a point where I was literally unable to eat solid food due to problems with my esophagus. It was torture even being around food and 100x worse when people made comments about how I should eat a burger. I would have given anything to eat a burger and could not. We do a lot of socializing around food and couldn't participate because it was so difficult. I imagine it is similarly emotionally difficult for people with eating disorders or other medical conditions.

Being called skinny isn’t a insult but refusing to call someone by their name and constantly talking about their body isn’t the same as just calling someone skinny. I’m a bigger girl and I can say I don’t blame her for calling the girl chunky. I definitely disagree with them the way they were sheltering the plus size women when she was bullying a women on her size as well.

Honestly I feel rlly bad for the husband in that story too. His mom is actually abusive if he has to worry that anything he does that goes against her will make her ostracize him from the entire family. Like that’s straight up emotional abuse, I’d hate to see what she was like when he was younger. Abuse is hard to escape from so it makes sense why he would keep trying to appease her and just let her do what she wants.

I'm the kind of person to match energy so 1000% I don't think the skinny woman is the ah. Minimizing her feelings kinda feels like when a guy catcalls a woman and gets mad when she tells him to stop because he's just "complimenting" her

I work in property management and a woman came in to tour the property one day. She was seated out at the front desk working with our leasing consultant but abruptly left without actually touring. I came out of my office about thirty minutes later to ask my colleague a question and the guest chair in front of her station (which isn’t in her full view) was absolutely covered in blood. I felt sooo badly for the lady who left - she must have known what happened.

idk if you guys want an answer lol but annulment requirements are tough, it has to be like Sarah said cheating or something drastic, but it can also be because the marriage was predicated on a lie by one person (identify theft, undisclosed financial or legal problems, etc. also, in an annulment you don't usually get a settlement, but in divorce the legal default is 50/50 split assets.

My great grandmother would notoriously reuse cards like Sarah but unironically. She would cut out the bottom of the inside where someone had previously signed and just sign it herself again. I've gotten cards with crossed out ages, "happy birthday grandma's" and so much more 😂

Sarah talking about how she dumped her diva cup into the sink reminded me of when I had to dump my dads pee cup thing ( he was a double leg amputee and restricted into a wheelchair so he couldn't like pee in the toilet) and I went to go empty it. IT NEVER OCCURED TO ME THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO DUMP IT IN THE TOILET AND NOT THE SINK. I panicked as soon as I realized and yelled to my parents " OH MY GOD IM DUMPING DOWN THE SINK" literally as the last drop came out

I’ve been bullied for being skinny me entire life. I feel so sorry for her, because it’s truly heartbreaking. It’s usually genetic and/or outside of your control and yet people still feel obligated to say things like, “eat a burger,” or, “skinny bones.” It’s comments like those that have contributed to my body issues as they have for many others.

I love giving my creations as gifts for birthdays and stuff. It’s so weird to me, only one person has actually offered to buy my crochet and i love him so much bc he actually respects the grind LMAO but really its such a weird phenomenon that people just think that its not worth paying for?

41:43 in a similar vein to sarah's go-to insult, in middle school once texted a kid who bullied me with his little clique something along the lines of "your sidekicks act like they love you so much, but in reality nobody would even care if you got hit by a train". needless to say, his mom called our teacher and i got a very scary talking-to. listen, it sounded better in my head
