How did Smosh save their channel? Ian Hecox. Ian fought tooth and nail to keep Smosh alive behind the scenes (on screen too), and along with him, the remaining cast and crew worked their asses off to give their viewers good content with probably very limited resources.

I couldn't agree more. I was showing my Mom their new live sitcom over the weekend and tried to give her a quick rundown of who they are, etc. and I VERY passionately explained Ian fighting to keep Smosh alive. How this seemingly laidback, just funny guy, took on this huge role behind the scenes, that I don't think he ever really wanted, but also couldn't stand to see not just Smosh the brand, but Smosh the PEOPLE lose everything.
I don't think he ever gets enough credit. I also never realized how strongly I felt about the whole thing until explaining it. Lol.
The absolute change in him having Anthony back is just so wonderful to witness.

You just have to watch Let's Do This to see how Ian was responsible for the way the channel and crew developed. That series was his baby, and not only was it a wholly original concept that only Smosh could pull off, but the episodes were designed to showcase everyone's comedic strengths and personalities, and give old and new crew chances to build relationships w each other. It's so sad that it wasn't as successful as they expected it to be, and even sadder we never got an episode for Anthony to take part in.

    Genuinely think it's because of:
    1. Ian Hecox. Bro really goes ups and downs from post-Anthony leaving, Defy era, post-Defy era, and now Anthony coming back. He's a great boss.
    2. Shayne Topp, A.K.A the backbone of Smosh. He work harder than anyone else and put his 100% mind to Smosh. Not that anyone doesn't work hard, but even another Smosh cast knew Shayne is the backbone of Smosh post-Anthony leaving till now.
    3. They build their fanbase exclusive to them so that everyone curious. I don't think non-Smosh fan knew Mexican Salsa Yes, or the comeback of Harambe meme. They know they have loyal fanbase and only focused on them.
    4. Speaking of Mexican Salsa Yes, the new cast is brilliant. Amanda, Angela, Chanse, Arasha, and Trevor is bonding with old cast like Shayne, Courtney, Damian, etc. I don't know where Ian and the crew find all these guys but it's working out.

Defy did many things wrong (which would probably take me an hour to list), but them bringing in the Smosh Squad and Smosh Games crew in a failed attempt to create a variety show for RUclips inadvertently led to Smosh getting its new identity in Shayne, Courtney and Damien. They were pivotal in not letting the ship sink after the Defy shutdown and their ability to work off the new cast members makes it easy for the audience to digest the revolving cast. Even if Damien seems to be focusing on his personal VA and streaming these days he will remain one of my favourite cast members and I wish him the best while enjoying whenever we get him in Smosh videos.

    • @Moopsten2
      @Moopsten2  16 дней назад +147

In my head it was a twisted way to move the smosh brand away from ian and anthony and make it more like SNL. A sketch comedy group where a majority of the performers could be replaced since its an ensemble.
And ironically Smosh today is an ensemble of performers but none of them are replaceable, even though some we dont see as often and many exit. All of them are able to demonstrate their uniqueness through the show formats.

    • @apurvasharma6915
      @apurvasharma6915 16 дней назад +30

@@Moopsten2 I compared them to a variety show because of the direction they took Smosh Pit (called Smosh 2nd back then), they tried to give each of the squad member a show of sorts like "Seriously Stupid Sleepover" plus "Woah, Nature Show" for Courtivia, "Smosh Labs" for Shayne, "One Hour Song Machine" for Keith and Streamy nominated "Put It In My Mouth" for Noah. I enjoyed most of the episodes for all these shows but even as a college freshmen/sophomore who was not into the influencer world at all I could sort of see that these would not be good for the fabled algorithm that every RUclipsr talked about at some point.
I do agree that they treated the on screen talent as just that, talent that are replaceable. Nowadays we get to know and love the cast gradually and that makes us more invested in the videos. For example, I think Angela is one of the funniest people on Smoshnow and I even regularly enjoy her on the AOAOAOA pod which I started listening to because of her and Patrick's appearances on Smosh, but it took some time for me to palate her specific brand of physical comedy.

I think what really brought back Smosh to its current Golden Era is at its core, Smosh is a channel built around friendship
I got into Smosh Pit during the Defy era because I could tell the squad of Shayne, Courtney, Olivia, Keith and Noah were actually friends.
The people at Smosh don’t just work together, they do stuff together outside of work. They know each other well. The crew gets involved with videos when they’re having fun.
Anthony coming back just exposed that part of Smosh again to everyone. Because they saw Ian and Anthony’s friendship again, and then got to see the friendship between everyone else as well.
The only thing that was lost was the “Where’s Anthony?” jokes 😂

I basically skipped the Defy era entirely, and was unaware of that whole debacle until a few years ago. I watched them pretty regularly as a teenager during the original Ian and Anthony era but tuned out around 2011-2012, then stumbled across them again in 2020 during the first lockdown. I don't remember what video it was that got recommended to me but it was most likely a TNTL episode, and I've been a loyal viewer of "new" Smosh ever since.

But TNTL was definitely what brought me back a year or so ago and now I've binged so much of all the channels from the last few years.

They made a lot of my childhood and I genuinely enjoyed watching smosh throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what stuck, then they ran with it after mythical bought smosh. Even after Anthony left I still loved watching smosh videos and was eager to see how they would manage around that. Then june of 2023 came and hinted at a big surprise. Me and my gf religiously watch their videos when they release two to three times a week on the pit or games channel and they they had integrated Angela, Arasha, and Chanse into the regular cast members we see, so naturally we assumed they were going to do a decent sized project with all the cast, but no, they surprised with he “we bought smosh” video. It was genuinely so crazy and kind of unbelievable to see Ian and Anthony on screen again. Then the views and reactions started coming and smosh was on the main stage once again. I am someone who started watching Smosh when it was just Ian and Anthony making parody music videos in their bedrooms. As a kid, I thought they were funny. And then when they got bought by Defy, I noticed that weird shift into just milking something until it was completely dry. (The Every Blank Ever series became so GRATING to me, I started to hate it.) The way they introduced new cast members seemed so off to me too, like all of the sudden I was only seeing Olivia, and Noah, and Keith, and Courtney, and it was so off to me. Like I didn't know who these people were, why am I seeing them all the time? Where's Ian and Anthony? So finally, I unsubscribed because it felt like the humor was just different than what I thought was funny now. And I didn't really like the new cast members. But then once Mythical bought them and I was able to enjoy the new cast for their personalities and talent, that drew me back in. So I subscribed again. And Anthony coming back was the icing on the cake.

I was going through old stuff when I was kid back in January, and had my elementary school art folder, and it was filled with Smosh References from their videos. the logo, Ian H. Anthony P. Mari T. And this was well after I got back into Smosh around late 2021. It felt wild that I fell out of it for so long and it’s so different, but I love it even more now. It feels weird having this impactful thing in your life exist so independently from the first time it existed in my life

As a long time Smosh fan that stayed with them throughout all the eras this is a great recap on what the hell happened with Smosh over the years
Two *very* minor nitpicks is that Olivia’s last name is pronounced like sway and when you listed the pit cast you made it sound like they all joined at that time but Damien didn’t join the cast until 2 years after everyone else

I’ve been watching Smosh since the Pokémon lip sync in 2005 in highschool. Then I’d watch them in college after classes, I watched them during my lunch break at my first “real job”. I’m still watching them today. I watch their videos with my husband now and he likes them too. I listened to Shayne read Reddit stories when I went through chemotherapy because my eyes hurt too much to read. So, not to be parasocial but they’ve gotten me through a lot and my respect for Ian holding them together is endless. Thanks for being there Smosh ❤

I remember dropping out when all the Smosh main channel was pushing out was the Every Blank Ever series. It just got so stale after a while. Smosh didn't appear in my reccommendations again until early last yeah with the Funeral Roasts. But I'm glad I got back into Smosh when I did. It was in a good place and I enjoyed the new kind of content coming out. Anthony coming back was the right icing on the cake.

As a long time Smosh fan this is such a good timeline explanation. I would love to see a similar video made about Mythical!! GMM was my first RUclips obsession, I've been watching EVERY season since back when they had Chia Link lol. But they sold out and started introducing this awful form of content creation where they released multiple 10 minute videos a day and we couldn't hear The Mythical Crew laughing behind the scenes anymore....overall it was so corporate and forced and not fun.... Rhett and Link realized this and brought it back!! They do what they want now and despite not getting the numbers they used to get (tens of millions of views per 10 minute vid) their community loves them for it. I truly feel like Rhett and Link are the most impressive example of RUclipsrs turning into a company. I just gave one example with that situation but they're also fantastic at making you WANT to follow their evolution. Mythical Society is the best and normally i hate when there's a paywall behind content. Sorry for the Mythical rant on a Smosh video but i feel like their evolution came first and would be an interesting subject since they're both character focused companies!

I was a fan of some of the og-og stuff. I had some of their songs ripped from RUclips as mp3s and listened to them on my iPod on the bus when I was 12. Dropped off seeing what they did when I was leaving high school after Anthony left. Randomly started watching their content just a few months before Anthony came back and was so happy when that happened. Happy to watch things that feel exciting and that feel genuine. It’s been so cute to see those original boys singing about dicks now become the leaders of something so successful.

Smosh pre July 2023 was like a 1000 piece puzzle with one of the corner pieeces missing. The puzzle looked great and you barely noticed the missing piece. But every once in a while you'd be reminded there's a piece missing and get a little bummed. Post July 2023 is just everyone jazzed that the missing piece came back. The entire puzzle still looked awesome without it, but now everyone is stoked that the puzzle is acutally complete and can appreciate the entire thing.

I've been on RUclips since the early days and followed a lot of the OG RUclipsrs except for Smosh as I didn't really like their humour at the time and never thought I'd watch them, let alone enjoy their videos. Then Angela Giarratana joined and, because I loved her in the starkid shows, I also started watching compilations of her which has now spiralled into me really enjoying smosh!

It’s seen RUclips from almost the very beginning up to the present, and it’s given me a lot of laughs of late.
You can say whatever you want about the channel, but the fact remains, the Smosh cast has gotten to make a living doing something they love.
At least I get the impression that they do.

I am glad that you centered a lot of their success and revival on the people of Smosh itself. They've been the ones focusing on creating something that could thrive without necessarily falling to the pit of disingenuous content creation. Its RUclips at its roots, while adjusting to what could change and what works in our day.

The thing is that they let the cast and crew creativity run loose. Especially since Anthony is back. Courtney is now directing and producing, Olivia and Shayne are also writers, Spencer is now producing at Smosh Games and it became more unhinged in all the best ways, they're not afraid to try new things like the Smosh sitcom, Food Crimes, Challenge Pit, etc etc. Smosh has now attracted new eyes that didn't like the old era of Smosh because the humor was...well....juvenile. Now that they're in charge again, are in their late 30s Ian and Anthony have matured and so has the humor at Smosh so they not only got back audiences that grew out of them and new audience that didn't really like them in the first place.

I grew up with smosh, I was born in 2002 so i grew up in the era where if there was a family computer, parents were working so much we had unrestricted access to it the second we could process how to use it, ability to read not necessary. All that to say, RUclips did kinda raise me and smosh was the first channel I kept coming back to after I found them. they were the first channel that taught me "woah if I come back to them after a while there will be NEW things and they're not just everything they posted before I found them." But I fell off during the Defy era HARD, didn't even think about smosh until Mykie announced she was dating anthony and I was like Yoooooo???? the guy from smosh is dating my favorite makeup girl????? but once anthony rejoined i fell back into them HARD AS FUCK
