Joe Walsh is my favorite guitarist. He is the definition of perfection. His tone and clarity is ALWAYS perfect. Why more people don't notice this perfection is beyond me. Great video!
He's been a favorite of mine as well. You're right Tony, he does have perfect tone and clarity and I believe it's due to 2 things. He has an ear for perfect pitch and knows how to set up a guitar's neck, bridge and pick-up heights to get great intonation and of course he's a great guitarist who plays from the heart.
Joe is the reason I became a guitarist. He is my biggest influence. More than Ed Van Halen even. Found a James Gang album in 1977 and began playing about 8 months later, at age 12.
Honor! Respect! Rock&Roll Hall of Fame should not exist without Joe Walsh! End of that story! I been a fan since the James Gang.The most underated 3 piece band ever! I have seen all the greats. And Joe takes a back seat to no one! Plus a great singer and songwriter. Thanks Joe!

Love the way Joe plays with the backbeat, slipping over under sideways to the rhythm section. The backbeat is the key to the blues and Walsh is so inventive and smooth as he swoops around the beat. Just a beautiful player.

Here I am a 64 year old lady...I certainly remember this song from back in the day and always liked it a lot. But after a I saw, on YT, the professproduced 2+ hours live concert (part 1 & part2) what I think must have been one of the last tours with Glen Frey, Joe Walsh played this and I thought WOW, he is just killing that song. Rocky Mountain Way is just one of the best classic rock KICK ASS songs out there! And then I never knew Joe Walsh was such a fantastic musician. Thanks for this review!
Joe's phrasing on both slide and talk box is sublime and beautifully understated. A refreshing change from listening to so many guitarists that think playing is all about how many notes you can cram in

Joe not only played fantastic with the James Gang and solo, he played on a lot of hit records in the seventies uncredited. He played the great slide on Jay Ferguson hit single Thunder Island. Not sure there was a better guitar duo than Walsh and Felder. As great as Walsh is, Felder may even be on a different level. That's how powerful a duo the Eagles had.
I love his work with the James Gang, a kickass liveact.. but yeah, Joe is a really great, very unique player
You can also hear Joe Walsh playing on the Richard Marx track "Don't Mean Nothing". Joe also plays on Steve Winwoods album "Back In The Highlife". Check out Joe's playing on the track " Split Decision". Concise, controlled and with plenty of the JW feel. Get's me every time I hear it! Joe is The Master!

Walsh ranks in my top ten Guitarists of all time. The guy does not get the recognition he deserves. He is a master of the slide guitar.
Joe is such a natural born player. He is so at home on the fretboard. He lives there, and plays so effortlessly. I got to see him play live at a small radio sponsored event back in the 80s. He's amazing. He gets such feeling into his playing. He has also some great videos on setting up guitars. So he is not just a player.

Wings....it’s kind of cool watching you with such appreciation to so many groups and artists I grew up with. Way before Joe was a solo act and then with The Eagles he played in The James Gang. It’s was all good and everyone was young and beautiful. Cheers 🥂. And now he’s Ringo Starr’s brother in law.

Check out the really fast riff he plays in that AND he sings.... brilliant. You have a list a mile long and I appreciate you are probably snowed under. Two guys who I really enjoyed years ago we're from your neck of the woods. That is down South. This entire performance is absolutely amazing! I saw Joe in the mid 90's @ Ft. Carson Army Base..near Co. Spgs., Co..not long b4 the Eagles got back 2gether again. It was a sm venue & outdoors in the aftn..& me & my honey were right on the front row..just a few feet from the stage. Joe was dressed in Army fatigues. Such a memorable concert. Thx 4 this one, Fil 🙂🙂💕💕

Joe's voice is so orig. & recognizable. Luv his guitar playing & stage antics, as well. Saw him in concert @ Ft. Carson Army Base when the Eagles were spilt 4 awhile. Times were hard but during troubled times, we could all put on a vinyl record and forget about the bad because we had something GOOD to listen to.......Great review my friend! Rock on!!!

I wouldn’t call myself a fan of Joe’s. I do appreciate the ground work that he and other innovators of his time laid down for the music of my generation (metal mostly).
No one expected Joe Walsh. We were all cool with Hendrix and the Stones and old Cream... but then, you're sitting around and what the .... is this? The talk box was revolutionary, it was monstrous, other worldly... and the slide with the echo feedback on the original Rocky Mountain? It made you drop your roach clip.
Joe Walsh is all about the noises he can make... the artistic sounds that he can either bring out of a guitar or breath through the guitar. He was avant-garde in the early 70's. The distortion, the bending, the "taking all the time to get where you both knew where he was going" stretching and reshaping sound on top of sound.
My immediate reaction was that I wanted to buy a 5 pound bag of whatever it was that Joe was smokin'. I could only imagine brother Walsh sitting around all day screwing with sounds to see what gave him the giggles and that he could adapt into a song. He is really a clever and sly dude. That's why I think everybody smiles to themselves when Joe steps up to play and sing. They know Joe worked on something that was going to tickle their ears in a different way.
Sophie Lloyd has a video out where she receives her "talk box" receiver/pedal. After going through and explaining all of its gizmos she sets it up to play it for the very first time. She barely makes it whisper... which knocked me out again about Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton. You gotta get your lungs into it to make it squall and squeal! Even more appreciation for the one and only.
Soundboards can replicate the basics of the talk box but they can't replace the ingenuity and imagination it takes to make unique and memorable sounds. "Canned is Canned." As Joe says, 'the artist has to 'authenticate' his music by putting himself in front of an audience. Until he does, he cannot 'testify' to the realness of his sounds. That human emotion and physical release of sound is real, all else is just trash can garbage.

I learned to play behind the nor\team, just a little late and it makes the song so much better with such emotion...I also learned the importance of a clean smooth vibrato. I also learned the way to step on the high notes cleanly and with strength...yes I listened to a multitude of guitar players. He was my favorite talk box...Wah-wah from Jimmie Hendrix, and a whammy pedal from satriani !

So nostalgic for me as I grew up listening to Walsh, Frampton, Cheap Trick etc. What jumped out at me was your genuine appreciation and enjoyment while you are watching. Glad I discovered this channel!

Very underrated player, IMO. I love his style. Knows when to come in and doesn’t overstay his welcome. Michael Schenker had the same ability of making the guitar talk, was very tasteful. Joe used to spend a good deal of time in Chicago in the late eighties and I heard him on the radio telling this story. He was sitting in the back of his limo because they wouldn’t let him drive anymore and Don’t mean nothin by Richard Marx comes on the radio and it starts with this guitar solo and Joe says “Hey, that guy’s pretty good...oh yeah, I forgot I did that”. He’s hilarious. Every time he was on Steve Dahl and Garry Meier’s show I would laugh so hard I would have tears streaming down my face.

How did I miss this one? Joe Walsh is one of my all time favorite guitarists! He was largely self-taught. This gives him a truly unique sound and style.When you hear him, you KNOW it's him. Aside from insane amounts of drugs and alcohol, he lived on guitar. Now it's just guitar. Thankfully. Once again, Fil, Thank you. Glad I found this.

Summer of 1975 we went to penrose stadium in Colorado springs , pikes peak and the Rocky's were behind the stage. Blue oyster cult had just finished with what was an early Lazer show . I will never forget, it was dark, only moonlight, the mountains range the full length of the stage and Joe starts Rocky mountain way...in the rocku mountains....BEST CONCERT EVER....
Growing up on the Front Range of Colorado he was a rockers hero. Most of us knew that he recorded at Caribou in the hey day of that studio and felt really attached to the party atmosphere of his rock. I can remember hiking and camping or just ditching school in the late spring to go to a natural wasterslide of smooth rock and water or hanging out on a sun drenched cliff to wipe out the winter blues. I'd be singing every note of his songs out loud, under my breath, or in my head. He was pretty cool even if he was from California.
Hi mate. Great video. Listened to an interview with Joe back in 86. He said Bill West, husband of country singer Dotty West invented the talk box and gave it to him. In 75 Frampton left Humble Pie and Walsh considered replacing him. He showed Frampton how to use the Talk Box. He eventually turned Humble Pie down and joined the Eagles.
If you can find it, this entire show is amazing, and Joe Vitale, just WOW.

I had the privilege of seeing Joe with James Gang during their first national tour, circa "Rides Again" and then a couple of times with his Barnstorm ensemble. A very creative and accomplished composer & musician and I don't think he is appreciated enough away from the Eagles. He certainly added a lot to the Eagles, too. As an aside, regarding Joe's personality, I was listening to my favorite FM station in my car on a Friday afternoon during the 70's in Kansas City, MO. Joe was playing live the following day and back then, stations often invited the musicians into their studio to talk about the upcoming show, etc. Joe came in with an acoustic guitar and proceeded to play a song in one key on the guitar and sang it in a different key. I play and I didn't unsderstand how he did that and still don't to this day.

As a sound guy, I think of Bob Heil’s contribution to the talk box and live sound for moments like this. As a bass play in high school in the 70’s we joked a talk box with a 15” driver!
I saw the Eagles right about the time Joe joined the group...either Angel or Dodger stadium all day concert. Some folks weren't happy that he was the new member, but I'll always remember him doing "Rocky Mountain Way" that day... :-)
One of my favourites for sure! Not the fastest but surely one off the most tastefull guitarists out there. Always playing with so much emotion. Besides that, not every guitarist writes good songs but he knows damned well how to write great songs. Just love his James Gang stuff and then with Joe Vitale and Kenny Passarelli formed his own trio. Some great records they made. Superb! I still listen to Barnstorm, The Smoker and So What after 45 years.

Not the fastest? There's plenty of "fast" players out there who can't play as well and as pure as Joe. Consider the time Joe and the Eagles were making milllions in music. Watch more of he and Don's playing,, you may retract that portion of your comment.

loved your analysis of this performance.. joe is a big star in my gallery of fave guitarists.. he is something special indeed. never was a fan of the talkbox but i get some humorous comfort from it because joe was a biggie in my late brothers musical life and although my brother was a bassist, and a stellar one at that, he was influenced by joes use of the talkbox enough to pourchase and perform with one lol. it was pretty funny watching my brother up there on stage playing damn good talkbox with his bass..it really worked! great job fil.

And Bob Heil was the one that helped Joe create the Talk Box
Frampton was first introduced to the Voice Box by Nashville pedal steel player Pete Drake when they were both working on George Harrison's 'All Things Must Pass' album. According to Frampton, during a break Drake said to him, 'Hey kid, have you ever seen one of these?' It was an original voice box as popularized by Drake in the 60s. But the concept goes back to about 1939. The Who used a Sonovox for voices on an advert on their '67 album 'The Who Sell Out'. Kustom Amplification introduced in '68 'The Bag', which was used at the time by John Kay of Steppenwolf and Mike Pinera of Iron Butterfly (check 'Butterfly Bleu'). Jeff Beck later used one in Beck Bogert & Appice. But the Voice Box that Walsh and Frampton used came from the country scene; Joe Walsh met Speedy West, popular pedal steel-playing husband of country singing star Dottie West, and he gave one - or what remained of one - to Walsh. Joe used it for recording 'Rocky Mountain Way', but it wasn't powerful enough for live situations, so he and Bob Heil - they're both electronics freaks - reconfigured the concept to make it more powerful...which added to the rumour that the vibrations would loosen one's teeth. In chronological terms Walsh and Frampton both first recorded a Voice Box on record around the same time. Walsh used his on the album 'The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get', Frampton used his on 'Frampton's Camel'. Recording for Walsh's album started in 'late '72' and the disc was released in June '73. Frampton's album was recorded between Dec. '72 and June '73. The difference was that Walsh had the hit with 'Rock Mountain Way', while Frampton, still struggling with his solo career, used his as a minor effect for the opening of this tune: ruclips.net/video/IyC8Pu44vaU/видео.html

Joe actually learned how to play slide from Duane Allman from the Allman Brother’s band. But he has developed his own technique and now many study Joe and how he does it.

Love Joe Walsh! Sad I didn't get to see him live his last go round with Eric Clapton. Really just got into his solo stuff like Welcome to The Club and albums after the Eagles. I like to see his playing analyzed cause he's so wild but smooth at the same time. Im a sax player and I try and channel him when I play blues and rock.

The wild man of rock in his day. Calmed down a little now. Well I've learned two things today. ! How a talk box works and 2..Joe Walsh used it before Frampton, which is the one I remembered.
On the other subject of my left index finger, half the top tip is gone but I have lost the use of the knuckle as it won't bend correctly. I've adapted to more picking rather than try and fight with chords.
I love watching you watch the guitar players. Reminds me of me!

The hubs is from Stow/Kent Ohio, and worked in a dry club there for a while. Joe was in town and one of the guys from the club came in one night and says, "Hey guys! I just ran into Joe Walsh!" He actually did. Joe was walking down the sidewalk and just stopped, and the guy ran into him.
He said, "Hey! You're Joe Walsh!"
Joe: "I am? WOW!"

Thanks for the explanations that you gave for Joe’s mouthbox guitar. I had never heard a good explanation before. I saw him from about 10-15 yards away either The Eagles! I don’t play guitar, but watching him that close, blew me away! He said Glen’s cool, yes that was true, but so was Joe!!!
The first use of the talk box that I am aware of, saw it on Dick Clarks show, was John Kay of Steppenwolf. It does go back a ways.

Seen Joe walsh at folsom field with the rocky mountains in the back drop folsom field out door stadium Boulder Colorado USA it was a amazing. Such fun. Times.
"The James Gang used to play in Nashville,” explained Walsh,” and I became good friends with Dottie West, the famous classic country singer. We would go to her house and people would come over, and we would sit around with an acoustic guitar and pass it around. That could be anybody - Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, Roger Miller -- whoever was in town. Dottie’s husband, Bill West, was a pedal steel player. He actually invented the talk box that was used on Pete Drake’s album. One day, while I was at Dottie’s house, Bill went out to the garage and got it and gave it to me. He said, ‘Here, you plug this end into your mouth. You’ll figure it out.’”
Walsh said it took a couple of months for him to become proficient with the device. “After I got the hang of it, I then figured out how it was built. I went to a hardware store and got some parts and made one for myself. ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ was the first time I used it on record. I showed it to a friend of mine named Bob Heil, who has a manufacturing company, and he [started making] them. I still have the original -- the one Bill West gave me -- tucked away in a storage locker.”
In fact, the original talk box used on “Rocky Mountain Way" had only enough volume for studio use. Together, Walsh and Heil developed a unit powerful enough for live shows

I knew I remembered reading Joe's story of how he aquired the talk box somewhere and how it got marketed. Eventually he put one in Peter's hands and the rest is history. Thanks guys 😁😁😁🤘🤘🤘

I recognize this show from the mid 70s. It was from the Don Kirshner's rock concert. This show, along with The Midnight Special, got us home from our late night running around as teenagers in the 70s. This brings back memories. Thanks for posting! As great as the internet is... we would actuall meet each other for face time back then. I'm glad I grew up when I did.
Never liked talkboxes but I much prefer Joe's style to Frampton's. More like a harmonica.

Joe's a master, he rolls into those slides. but I have to turn you on, if you wish to hear some hardcore, heavy duty southern rock search "Papa Chubby" that guy is hardcore, like Angus on southern rock. hmmm maybe it's southern metal
My favorite guitarist...he was my inspiration and he is responsible for my writing style...I saw Zepplin, and Morrison, and then in HS I heard Funk#49 and fell in love with it...went home with the album and learned it and played it in my HS Band! I was never good at slide and I also used a Talk-Box.
