The theme song to the Hitchhikers To The Galaxy radio show was "Journey of the Sorcerer" from the album One Of These Nights (1975) by the Eagles. Though Joe didn't perform on the song and wouldn't become a member of the Eagles until the next album, Hotel California.

Way back in the mid 60s, Joe use to teach my brother guitar in trade for use of my brother's Silvertone 2x12 amp. Joe didn't have a good amp and needed one for his gigs. He also lived in his van and ate a lot of bolony/mustard sandwiches. I was 5-6 yrs old and my brother was 15-16 yrs old. He would come over to our home and teach my brother, but also take time to teach me simple songs and I would learn them. He was playing in a band called the Measles and played all around NE Ohio while he was going to Kent State. He told my parents to take notice how fast I picked up learning a song by ear. He gave my brother and me good advise when it comes to not leveling off in our playing skills. If you get stale in the band you're in, change bands, even if it's a step backward. You'll still learn something you didn't know in the other bands. The more people you play music with, the more you'll learn. Learn more than just one style of music so you will have a wide variety of ideas and styles to draw from and that will help create your own style. Needless to say, he quit the Measles and went up to Cleveland to play in the James Gang, which had 5-6 members at the time. But shortly after he joined, the band dropped down to Joe, a bass player, and a drummer. That was enough to kick start his career. The rest is history. He basically turned me on to playing music when I was 5. Now, I'm 64 and have been in bands and doing solo work fulltime since I was 13. I'm on my 35th year as a solo act and enjoy playing music just as much as when I was a little kid just learning how to play. Thanks Joe. 🙂

I met Joe Walsh at a house party about 10 years ago. He was sitting by the pool playing guitar and I walked up with some girl I’d just met that night. He was basically sitting in the dark so we walked up but didn’t get too close to try and give him his space. We sat down and he told us we could come closer so we were literally 3 feet away from him while he played acoustic guitar. She had absolutely no idea who he was.basically got a free show for just the two of us for about 20 minutes before everyone else came up to the pool. Then other people joined him and started playing. I tried explaining it, but I don’t think she ever really understood who this man was and how lucky we were.

Epic ! I had this on VHS in the 90's. More than anything else, IMO what really stands out about Joe's playing is simply his perfect phrasing. His solos say so much without being overly technical in the slightest. Its clearly based on the time proven classic "Q&A approach" to building melodies via cleverly connecting simple licks & riffs & such. & I'm 100% with him regarding learning Beatle tunes & NOT only for guitar, even if you don't necessarily like the styles/genre. Writing, as well as just understanding music in general is ALL about chord progressions. & virtually every good modern tune, even to this day, can more often than not be directly traced back to something Beatlesque. & yes, Henley is notoriou$ for being a ©/blocking D-bag, which unfortunately will ONLY diminish(perhaps greatly) the # of people familiar with his music in future gens.

That's pretty sage advice on learning ALL The Beatles songs. I don't believe it's only because they're the greatest band in the world. But rather because they actually used a wide variety of chord voicings. By going the varied voicings route (not to mention a fearlessness to try unorthodox instruments and instrumentation) by playing a common chord an entirely different way on the neck lends to a more unique sound in a song. Almost every Beatles song has a peculiar uniqueness either subtle or in your face. The earliest of The Beatles is as common as you get and only got more expansive from there. I can't imagine another band, however talented and unique such as Pink Floyd or even The Eagles that managed this so well as The Beatles did.

Saw a recent video where he said he always played his best when he was drunk on vodka. Now that he’s sober, he’s surprised at how much better he’s playing. That makes me wonder how much better he could have been back in the day.

i love how he attacked the strings with his pick during the tuning. i usually just lightly do it, but attacking at full volume seems like it gives more vibration and tone variance, to hear the difference as things settle. Also, its going to match his heavy attack during ff. reminds me of doing a mic check at full volume vs half volume, except here its for pitch.

  • @jackhaugh

I had seen this before. I think you confused the words “jester” and “raging alcoholic” at the beginning because Joe is drunk off his ass in this entire video.
On a side note, I got a meet and greet ticket to meet Mr. Big when they were opening for Aerosmith in Berlin, Germany back in ‘93. I didn’t realize it was a meet and greet because I traded a carton of untaxed US Marlboro reds to a scalper and he gave me his best ticket.
I got to meet Paul Gilbert, and he’s one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met in my entire life.
It turns out I was born in the town in PA he’s from, and I grew up down the road from there. He was very engaging while the rest of the band couldn’t give a rats ass about anyone there.
He asked me “What’s it like to be a soldier stationed in Germany?!? That has to be so cool!” And I’m like “What’s it like to be a guitar god opening for Aerosmith on a European tour?!? That has to be SO much more cool!!!”
I told him I’d just started learning the guitar about a year and a half ago, and he goes “Let me show you how to do the patented Paul Gilbert pick slide…” And he hands me his stage guitar right before they’re going on stage and shows me how he does a pick slide. Then I hand it back to him and he walks out of the green room up to the stage without even checking the tuning. It was pretty badass.

My sister is 7yrs older than me (I'm 66) and James Gang Rides Again was my first taste of Joe. I was so enamored by him, and caught the humor of him right away. Read an interview in some mag, he described building a "talk box" using a Fender Twin Reverb as the amp/speaker, and his rattling all the fillings in his teeth out. And of course he got the guitarist job in Drew Carey's band over Slash. He also went to Montclair HS, Montclair NJ, where he took shop class and learned to weld...

Joe Walsh. He is fortunate to be one of those with near enough perfect pitch. Regular humans have to depend on the electronic tuners. Of course you could do it the Other old fashioned way. Get a tuning fork to set your low string to. He did a guitar setup video for a white Gibson from I think Gibson UK? That was a great video to watch to learn the basics of setting up a guitar.

Joe Walsh is like that wild, drunk bachelor uncle that your mother hated. You were somewhat scared of him too, but you knew he was super cool and way more interesting than your parents. One time, in your early teens, your parents had to get out of town in a hurry and were desperate for a sitter, so you had to stay with him for a few days. It was a magical time... Uncle schooled you on the best music, taught you how to play guitar, gave you your first beer, you got into his grass and porn stash... it was epic and life changing. LOL

I think I just stumbled upon a gamechanger that even Joe would approve. A jewelry cloth. A silver one, at least because that's what I was using to clean silverware for a loved one. Turned really tarnished acoustic strings to looking and feeling almost new to sight and touch. I didn't bother with the underside because this was on a whim. But you pretty easily could if you detuned a few steps I imagine. Might very well keep a set lasting much longer as well.

Interesting video I however have an issue with the instructions on TRUSS ROD ADJUSTMENT?! !! Sighting is ok ina pinch... However Most Luthier's & guitar tech's have a Truss Rod Level Tool see Amazon e-bay TEMU Alie-Express Sweetwater etc. It's a metal edge with 2 sides notched so it can fit over Frets .. both scales for Fender and Gibson Style guitars Length... This gives a clear true reading of the Fret Board... Cheers 🍻🥃🥃🎸🎵🎶🎶🥂

I thought this method was dying down but now with this video and your recomendation of telling people to watch the original video to learn how to do it, there is going to be a whole new generation doing this 😂

Right!.... in the first minute when I heard that I was about to fly to the comments to protest!!! NOOOO!!!! no knotting is needed!!! The taper on the post is enough to make it self-clamping!!! 4 wraps around the post UNDER the hole and that string will NOT move! (I have one guitar I had put away for 10 years, out of the case it was still in tune! Of course strung with no knots!)

I started playing guitar right around this time of year way-back in 1985, and of course wanted to play shred-metal.
I learned quickly that I was never going to be as fast as Eddie or Vai, so I listened to who inspired *them* and people who didn’t “shred” but played guitar-based rock & pop.
You can learn from almost every player, and should be open to taking the time to check-out music that isn’t your cup of tea.
