- " A 21-year-old college student has been charged with first-degree murder after Florida authorities say he drove to his mother's home and stabbed her multiple times Saturday because "she got on my nerves," authorities said. Emmanuel Espinoza drove about 165 miles from the University of Florida in Gainesville to Frostproof, Florida, for a family event. When he arrived at his mother's, he began stabbing her when she answered the door and then called 911 to confess to the slaying, said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. Elvia Espinoza, 46, was on the phone with another relative when her son attacked her. "We talked to him and he confessed. He said, 'You know, I have wanted to kill my mother for many, many years because she got on my nerves,'" Judd said. "We asked him, 'What's your relationship with your mother?' and, he said about an eight out of 10, that he really loved her, but she irritated him." I worked in a forensic mental hospital for 22 years. Many boys who killed their mothers. All diagnosed with prodromal schizophrenia. The age is right, stresses of college etc… probably not common but within the general population but common amongst criminally mentally ill. Sad!

This happened in my former area of residence in Polk County. I have never seen Sheriff Grady Judd SO genuinely disturbed before. The details of this case are beyond despicable and so nerve-wracking.

Where was the father? I heard the father being talked about in the beginning, but nothing in the end. I feel like did his parents get divorced??? Could he have seen his mom after the divorce dating a new man? It seems like a crime of passion. Or even something more disturbing could he have been attracted to her. I know it’s really sick to say but he seems really sick in the head. Like he didn’t like her but he loved her…? Sounds like rage of jealousy.

When someone is a psychopath, there are signs. I don’t say this to place blame on the family AT ALL. I’m just saying there’s more to this case than “perfect son”. There had to be signs of his dark thoughts that we just haven’t heard. Somebody at his school noticed he was weird or his siblings might have noticed he seemed off. Maybe it got chalked up to “oh he just has a dark sense of humor”. Of course no one could have predicted this, but unless this was a sudden oneset schizophrenic episode (and it doesn’t sound like it was), there were definitely signs this kid was an A-hole before this. I don’t care how good his grades were. Smart people can be sadistic weirdos too.

I'm sure he showed many signs earlier, but they either overlooked it or addressed it in a wrong way. With religion or mentoring, humiliation, we don't know. He dreamed about killing her for years. He must have been behaving weird around her, maybe even sharing his dream with somebody, whether personally or on Internet.

This is my home town. Mrs Espinosa was an elementary school teacher when I was a student there. I’m 25 now. I went to kindergarten with her son Jose 😞 so sad what happened to her.

His speech sounded absolutely normal to me honestly. That is what makes this so sad and confusing. We need to use this as an example to advocate for mental illness, especially for young boys who feel like they may not be able to speak on their mental struggles. Not to assume, but it’s possible he had some undiagnosed mental illness and absolutely snapped. He was working toward his future and physically doing everything he thought was best course of action until his mental sickness took over. So so sad.

It doesn't show any of the depth or sophistication of thought you'd expect from someone described as "brilliant". And I don't think he snapped; he said he had been planning on killing his mother for a long time. We probably hear about it more making the news, I don’t think there’s really any correlation with higher madness and higher IQ is there? although we’ve definitely heard of some exceptional ones. Less intelligent people and madness do not often make the news unless the crime is horrible.

So, so true. It’s almost as if when people are smart and intelligent, their brains are constantly thinking, so much so, that it literally becomes tormenting to be inside their own heads. And I think often, these people can’t get enough stimulation to satiate their own brains. I truly feel that’s the reason a lot of criminals and murderers also happen to be very intelligent. I think it also becomes a rejection of society in general, because when you stay in your own head, you can’t understand why the masses follow along blindly. It’s absolutely hell sometimes to stay inside your own mind, constantly thinking, but at the same time, it’s just not acceptable, not even remotely to try and solve these problems with harming others.

Maybe something SEVERELY traumatic happened to him either when he was very very young that he connected back to his mother and then something similar happened at med school that triggered the memory and made him make this plan. He said he had been planning on doing this for the past 3 years which coincided with him being in his 3rd year of med school. 💁🏻♀️

Right. I feel like she was putting him through a lot of expectations of perfect performance, and he had enough. He was exhausted but due to some mental issue, he was not able to communicate it or sett boundaries, so he did it his way. He stopped the abuse, but now his and his family lives are ruined. It is sad that he did not seek help instead of doing this. Parents who are teachers tend to force their children to overachieve. :-(

This case is super strange to me.
Unfortunately, I have been pretty sick for the last couple months. I have been falling into a depression due to being stuck in bed nauseous and sick for weeks. While everyone else my age has been out enjoying life. Finding your channel and listening to your videos has gotten my mind off my illness and caught up in your stories. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to post these. Hopefully in a few months, I’ll be better and will look back on this experience and feel like we all spent it together. Thank you for keeping me sane and distracted.

I don’t understand how anyone could kill their Mom. I lost my Mom when I was 13 and would have given anything to have her here. Mothers are a special gift❤️
