I have to disagree about Louis’ mother turning a blind eye to his ways. His mom throws shade about him to another woman. In the opening party scene where he’s dancing with Maddy. She says “he’s got every woman in Parrish thinking he’s the second coming.”
I've always been of the school of thought that the last scene with Eve and Cicely somewhat proved Louis was telling the truth. I thought them destroying the letter was them destroying evidence and creating yet another family secret. Great deep dive though. ❤
IMO, Louis and Mosel are both cursed. Mosel cursed is the cycle of falling in love and getting married just for her her husbands to die. Louis cursed is to never being satisfied by the women in his life.
luis is no different then any other man who's wife let's him sleep around.....the only issue is the other husband didn't want him sleeping with his wife....
@vashtikelly6837 In the 1960s, it was challenging for women to obtain a divorce due to limited rights and societal norms. Roz might have faced obstacles in leaving her husband as it could have resulted in the loss of her social status and the disapproval of her family. Roz family would send her back to her husband.
This movie was so well casted. It was a great though provoking visual. To dig a little deeper, he not wanting him to look at her in that way was biblical in a sense. There are so many ways to look into this.
Eve's Bayou is relative to Ritual starring Clarence Williams III: such a depiction of black families in two different times and eras, with its eerie, haunting, chilling, twisted aura and characters, odipie complex, cursed with a curse and plagued. Both reads like a book just before falling asleep to endure continuation where we thought both films ended not to mention Louis's letter he left telling what really happened before his demise.
I think that Louis did it. Louis calling Mozelle crazy, and talking about her time in the institution implies that Mozelle possibly went through something similar, possibly with their father, and that she was not believed. Louis knows it’s something that men in the family have gotten away with in the past. Her barrenness and “brokenheartedness” is caused by her own early abuse. The curse is the acceptance of sexual abuse within the family system. Mozelle’s psychic abilities come from living in the abusive system - a coping mechanism that develops for safety. Also, unspeakable acts and trauma leave us without words, and Sissily not having the words to describe what happened, speaks to her trauma being real and deep. Sissily “getting her period” points to her having been raped - and the red blood as shown on the underwear, is not the color blood would be at first menses.
Additionally, Mozelle did see Eve’s memory - she saw what Louis did and that’s why she confronted him and that’s why he wrote Mozelle the letter. Mozelle pretended she couldn’t see it. Mozelle told Eve earlier that she would kill her if she told about the cheating, so we know Mozelle would keep secrets to help her family save face.
Interesting theory! We can only attribute their behaviors as adults by how they were raised as children. I do suspect there may have been inappropriate relations in their family line, or atleast the fact that Louis and Mozelle’s dad cheated on their mom. Mozelle’s curse can also be theorized by her inability to love and open up, so she purposely sabotages relationships before she can experience real love….another self preservation tactic most likely from trauma.
@@emryadoraanother great theory about the vision and adding that Mozelle “pretended” not to see it. But I do have to disagree…Mozelle’s visions usually take about 10 seconds (sometimes even more), and when trying to read Eve, it was an immediate block from Eve’s part. I do sense that Eve has stronger abilities than Mozelle. Also when Mozelle tried to read Eve, Eve didn’t know the details yet. Eve saw Sissely’s memory wayy after Mozelle confronted Eve. I believe Eve blocked her plot against her father, and I do think that Mozelle would’ve tried to stop Eve from going along with the murder, if she knew about it.
I think Cecily may have seen her Dad playing his games with patients, just as Eve had. She became fixated on being pleasurable to him, to keep him at home and being rude to her Mom to drive her away.
I remember on VHS or dvd back in the days but i watched the movie ans there was an old man in a wheelchair watching in the corner the night cicely was slapped after kissing her father. Fast forward, ive seen this movie countless times on television but the old man in the wheelchair isn't present. Has anyone ever seen him in that scene?
Yes, there's a lady on tic tok that breaks that scene down. It's on the director's cut. They removed it from the original. He saw what really happened that night.
This movie definitely confused me & I haven’t seen this movie in years but I remember it like it was yesterday-but I don’t think he molested ANY of his girls however; he in my opinion didn’t like Eve
Yeah, I didn't pick up on any molestation, but Louis was definitely a philandering womanizer, and pitted the women in his life against each other. I had a friend whose husband got a real kick out of his mother-in-law and wife fighting, which they did often. 🙄 They were both overly reliant upon him and it made him feel powerful. 🙄
Could be! I do think they are both toxic and that would come from their upbringing. Or maybe Louis’ dad didn’t respect his mother which is why Louis walks all over Roz.
As a SA victim I have to disagree. There are too many points to grooming and SA and family coverup. Her cycle coming on after the incident, her depression and extreme emotions from her sister revealing her cycle, her mother having an unnatural competition with cissy the oldest daughter and the father playing into it and cissy being sent away not long after and telling her sister to be quiet insinuating the mother and sister and familys need to meep it a secret. As someone with a very similar experience outside of it being the father that hurt me "my daddy never hurt me it wasn't him" I can say this is very accurate for black families in the country as well as whites because I don't want to negate their issues. But we as black girls have experienced this to an extreme. Don't demonize cissily. Most likely daddy kissed her sexually and harmed her hence her cycle coming on immediately after and her abnormal emotional response to it. Unlikely she didn't know about a cycle beforehand from her mother and father doctor. I knew about that since 3
Stop with then menstrual cycles already. Being sexually assaulted does NOT bring on menstural cycles in any way. In most cases though, the body delays the cycle starting or no effect at all.
I totally agree. He also doesn’t really have a track record for “lying” in the film. I think he knew that everyone knew about his affairs and he didn’t do much to cover it up. But his past definitely caught up with him!
This movie always reminds me of Beyoncé and Sean Carter and her three kids. Her son definitely has that sandy red hair like the little boy in the movie and Blu acts just like the oldest daughter

Yes! You are so right! I later noticed she was always low key throwing shade at him! But I do think she’s all talk and no action….
