    I had a professor in film school who was shooting a film and when I asked her what she was shooting on, she said "Cookes". Before camera, she singled out the lenses. Truly an industry standard tool!

    One benefit of the Cooke MiniS4s is that they have smooth round bokeh at t/2.8 since that’s their max aperture. :) The images is gorgeous especially at minimum focus distance.

    I hadn't head about the slight defocus of the red wavelengths in the secondary spectrum before. One of the key aspects of the Cooke look I thought was a spherical focus plane that gives the focus point more '3D pop'.

    One thing I would love is a comparison video between S4s and sets of Dulens, DZO, Meike and so on like "what set of affordable lenses is the closest to the Cooke Look". (might be counter productive for a store carrying Cooke lenses, I know :p)

      Modern lenses are made for brick wall comparison, this is the most important thing for the masses and dxo mark. sharpness. similar is the megapixel race with cameras. If you want lenses with character the cheapest you can get are Leica R´s.

    I love Cooke lenses, the S4's in particular. Cooke does a great job of avoiding the modern hyper clinical look without going overboard on the "imperfections". Their only downside for me is their size and weight, but it's usually worth it for the build quality. Spherical lenses tend to all look so similar that even an experienced DP will have a hard time separating them, if they can at all. Panavision is the only other brand I can think of making spherical lenses that provide a unique and noticeable look.

    • @305kubrick

      Cooke's are known for their increased 3 dimensional imagery compared to other high end lenses. You cannot achieve this in post.

      Ah, I know what you mean:
      SIGMA'S CEO recently mentioned this "3D vintage look" thing in an interview he gave to DPREVIEW.
      He said SIGMA analysed what exactly movie makers meant by their request for this lens characteristic and discovered that this terminology is simply their way of saying "spherical distortion".
      Obviously something so simple CAN be added in post.
      I guess it'll be more an issue of not overdoing the effect and using it in moderation instead.

    • @MaxKissler
      @MaxKissler Год назад +2

      @@87solarsky Shoot with a vintage lens without aspherical elements. In post: Add a bit of warmth by adding some yellow and a bit of magenta in your wb settings. Add a radial power window in resolve - blur the edges ever so slightly. add a bit of barrel distortion and vignetting. Voila, le cooke look..

    • @305kubrick
      @305kubrick Год назад +2

      @@87solarsky Well, I don't think you really can because cooke's have physical wider glass which is able to wrap around the image more. You cannot achieve this in post. I'm not a lens expert by any means, but based off shoot outs between Cookes and other lenses, the added dimensionality of the Cookes is very noticeable.

    I worked in a rental house and I have to be honest, apart from their solid construction there isn't much difference between the Cooke and the cheaper Rokinon Ds. Like many things in this industry they are highly overrated and idolized in a religious way. In what if they are incomparable is in increasing the price of a production and of course feeding technicians like me. 😅
