  • After Megyn Kelly shares a powerful public service message about school shootings, school psychologist Tom Kersting says “we have to empower our kids” to bring warning signs to the attention of parents and authorities. In the studio audience, a substitute teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School says she’s on “pins and needles” to learn the identities of students killed.

You guys forgot the Las Vegas shooter, he shows no sign of psychology illness, no warning sign, coming from a perfectly normal and healthy family. To "predict" mass shooter is actually very difficult and near impossible. It's like wishfully thinking to predict crime and arrest them before they commit the crime.

rewer it's not the mentally ill people who are doing the shooting rampages. It's usually very smart organized people who can stay under the radar until they are shooting the people. The truly mentally ill people can't stay under the radar.

Here in Fla they just passed a bill to give victims of bullies school vouchers. So the bully gets to stay and the victim must change schools and leave their friends and teachers. Sad.

      Don't you get it?
You are the only fking country in the world with automatic weapons and guns of all sorts on every block.

Taking the “crazy kids” off of gun lists will not prevent them from getting guns or bombing schools. Unfortunately, this kid fell through the cracks as both his adoptive parents are deceased. He may have had no anchor after his adoptive mother died. So sad.

If I tell you what we should do you’ll shut me out. If the kid had a knife he wouldn’t have killed so many. I grew up in another country where regular citizens don’t have guns. It’s a shame that some times people would stab, but no such thing as a mass shooting. Like I said I’m American but I was born and raised in a country that don’t allow regular citizens to have guns. But when I moved back to the states when I was 19 I got a real culture shock. People here have too many guns. What do you expect when you have this many guns? It’s just sad nothing will get better here. Because you will forget it in a week or so. It’s what ALWAYS happens. Not smart enough to change it then obviously people are going to continue to die from gun violence.

I like their message but there is a fine line here, people start over reacting, then situations like The West Memphis Three happen. Teenagers accused of killing because they wore black and were bullied, who were sentenced to life in prison and one given the death sentence when there was no evidence connecting them to the crime. Finding evidence many years later of someone else doing it.

When a white man murders innocent people he was bullied, his parents died, he's alone, grieving and a hurting lone wolf. He's mental health. The psycho therapists and psychologists come out of the woodwork. You NEVER hear TERRORIST, THUG, OR EVEN MURDERER. IT'S INCREDIBLE.

I like how this singles out people being bullied like once you're bullied then you automatically become a murderer. So you can't help getting bullied and then you get profiled for it and accused of things that have nothing to do with you. Don't bullies have mental health issues too then? They're violent as well. Verbal and physical abuse for years and they get to pick who the witch is for this century's hunt?

    • @ImSoPinoyPride
      @ImSoPinoyPride 6 лет назад +10

Not only being bullied but he was a loner. Worst tragedy before that was that his parents died and another family member he stayed with died. He had nobody. He got kicked out of multiple high schools which is a red flag. He should have been getting mental health support and probably home schooled. Instead it was overlooked and this is what happened. Common denominator is that all the shootings are from boys. I think society as a whole needs to look at that and why so many young boy these age have access to the guns and then go on a shooting rampage. Did anyone even bother to talk to him regarding his issues outside of school?

    • @christinecurly6371
      @christinecurly6371 6 лет назад +2

Jsuis14 is not about being bullied, as stated, not because you are bullied you will become a murderer. It's about how weak minded people are too not be able to cope with bullying and go on a rampage of anger killing inocent people. I mean no offense to anyone that has ever been bullied, I was bullied myself as a child. May God bless all of the families broken by this horrendous act of evil. Can't even imagine all the pain.

"Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.-43.8 million, or 18.5%-experiences mental illness in a given year.1 ". good luck monitoring all that. The only viable solution is to stop putting military weapons in civilian hands. It is far more feasible to start destroying around 10 million guns a year, and outlaw them from civilian hands, than it is to ever make a dent on your mental health issues. Once you make it really hard for non-criminals to get guns, you'll see the school massacres stop. But I think American's have a "won't happen to my family" attitude - which is a safe bet statistically - so there will be no action. Why give up your gun just so someone elses kid can live?

Fuzzy Puppet its not wishfull of your living under a rock. Terrorist act have been prevented, and gun violence. Its not 100%, its round. 5-10%. Very low, better then none. EU works much better there, violence gone up. The side affect is better, gun violence is so low. Fist fight, knife cut, domestic violence. Atleast they happy, they dont have worry about waking up to bullet spray. Only high rate death they got is from old age. Maybe you should improved the rate better like Eu. Then pretend that it doesnt exists, any where else.

Fuzzy Puppet Not arresting them but 'involuntarily committing' them to bogus 'mental hospital' under the watch of a quack and those that work with him/her. They already do it to random people that are not even diagnosed as 'mentally ill' by that bogus DSM book. A quack spoke of Trump without even knowing him.
I read a story online that a crisis team with a bunch of officers got a man, who had been blackout drunk the night before from where he lived. The same day, in the place, before he was committed, he actually wanted to go and was actually fine, but ended up spending three days in the dump. On top if that, the same day he had been waiting in intake or whatever he saw that an actual suicidal teen girl was allowed to leave and not be committed due to lack of bedding when he had already made clear he was alright and wanted to leave. That girl was crying to her mother on the phone. He was even handed a paper stating basically by the court, they were allowed to subdue him and needle him with drugs if he refused them.

This played a small factor in him being able to pull the trigger on kids, because you have to keep in mind as well this guy was mentally ill, on drugs as well which stopped him from thinking straight at all in the moment. And I'm saying this as someone who's played violent video games for as long as I can remember, trust me I'm not against violent video games.

They were SHOCKED when I was positive towards them and they always came around me knowing that at least somebody believes they can be and do better. There are parents who are afraid of their kids and won't discipline them! Teachers who dont care about their students, and students who don't care how they treat each other. We need to know the signs of a very troubled person so they can get help. Real help.

If he really wanted to shoot up the school, metal detectors wouldn't have prevented him from getting in especially if it's a large enough high school. They would have to place those detectors at every entrance and have it all being monitored. Schools and states wont provide that kind of funding. He could have easily slipped in or shot the security guards to get in even at that.

There were classroom doors that were locked and people were hiding too, as he was going through the halls shooting. You know what he did? He shot through the locks and glass. That's not going to stop him. I've been to many high schools, since I'm a substitute teacher, and there are always ways to get into the buildings because students are always finding ways to ditch or get by unseen. There's not many campus monitors or security either. As long as they time it right, any student can get in school buildings without being seen.

If you look into the V-tech shooting, there was an investigation regarding the mental health system and officials that were in charge of giving him treatment. It was found that the system failed him. That happens more often than not. The healthcare system in the U.S. is geared to make profit. A lot of patients are routienly just prescribed medication/drugs at an alarming rate because psychiatrists and insurance companies care more about $$$. It's also happening in hospitals. It's a shame and the politicians are being paid off to support a lot of these major companies. 18 shootings in 2018 all by angry males.

It's more than that, but it's definitely a societal issue. Majority of these shooters are young boys that have built up anger because they felt that they were wronged in some way. An example would be the V-tech shooting. There was an investigation that was found that the mental health system and officials had failed him. Mental health system in the U.S. is geared towards profit as well. Even if he saw a psychiatrist, there are many who care more about #'s and prescribing drugs at a fast rate so it increases more $$$.

Video games in general are not the problem though. Keep in mind, that hunting is a sport, keep in mind that paintball is a sport. FPS's can be eSports. Overwatch. It's an FPS. It recently had a League competition. It deals with "shooting" but it is sport-minded and NOT at all like Call of Duty, Battlefield, PUBG, etc. Just keep that in mind before accusing video games in general. I'd term it to a "realistic-soldier-FPS" type of deal if you could.

I definitely agree with the signs that can determine if the child is emotionally not stable at the moment. Honestly, every school should have a professional group of people that are there to help those students that are in need of emotional support, that will make all the students feel good and confident about themselves, make the school environment loving and accepting and etc. And of course a guard!! But where is all this aggression coming from?... From movies , video games, toys and etc. Children are constantly exposed to violence...besides that.. what is the situation at home, in school, with friends. When all the stressors are combined together the children that have no proper guidance and support usually end up in bed situations( different kinds)... Yes, it is important to look for signs, starting from young age, and always make sure that your kids, students, friends are getting enough love and support, and that they know they have someone who believes and cares about them!

By all means address mental illness and society factors but first and foremost, address what enables these people (not just kids - Las Vegas) to commit mass murder.

It’s interesting to think about that research of the targets used for practice and courage to actually shoot a gun.. because if that’s a fact potentially people who plan on self harm or to others, and have the experience of shooter games or even shooting activities, will have (to say) the courage to go with their plan. And it’s not saying shooter games lead to shootings.. it’s saying that it may encourage a human to actually pull the trigger and then again every human is different. There is also the psychological aspect where if a diagnosis for say schizophrenia is present, hallucinations and delusions may play a part as an encouragement to complete this type of crime.

First of all Teen Suicide (which is significantly higher for boys) and Mass school shootings go hand in hand. The reason its usually always males is beacuse they have a higher tendency for violence. Doing a Mass shooting is like committing suicide with the desire to hurt people because they feel like they have been emotionally hurt by their peers. I think our society has to cater more to our boys emotional needs (which includes bullying, peer rejection, finding a purpose etc.). To put it simply the boy Cruz was not given enough affection from society and was proabably rejected by his peers and elders (expelled from school). So instead of just committing suicide he wanted to inflict pain on society for rejecting him. These mass shootings are a reflection of how boys are ignored and rejected by society. What he did was detestable and should be given life without parole. But beyond the superficial level this product of something else. This is not a mental health issue or gun issue this is the product of alienation and hatred for your peers.

“We’re not anti guns, we’re anti violence” I’m sorry but they fall under the same category to me and America needs to realise to stop this they need to change gun laws or just simply ban them. I’m from the UK so I’m just talking from the perspective of an outsider looking from across the pond, but why are guns always swept under the rug when a tragedy like this is becoming way too common? I love the American people and have been inspired by some of them by their passion and inspiration they have contributed to the world, but the people in the higher places and government of America need to face the truth and sort the gun problem out.

The National Rifle Assocition (NRA) is a very powerful organization that have powerful lobbyists who make sure that their politicians are bought and paid for and will protect the 2nd Amendment at all costs (even the lives of children apparently.). The conservatives in this country tend to be very outspoken proponents of the 2nd Amendment of the American Constitution, which is the right to bear arms. The NRA's power and some American's attachment to this amendment cannot be overstated. Banning guns will never happen. Most Americans, however, would like some form of stricter gun control. But as long as the politicians are being propped up by the NRA, things will never change.

that might've worked 50 years ago but they have more guns than ppl in the USA now. it's easy for the UK and Canada to say gun laws will fix the issue. you're on an island. but canada is getting illegal guns in from USA from ppl who walk across the border. they need a buy back program and higher minimum wages and policy of extreme kindness towards disgruntled young males. and bullet buy backs.

JayBobbles I love your comments...wish we had more folks like you...Sadly many Americans are obsessed with guns, live in paranoia of being attacked or that the government will take thier guns and enslave them, not realizing they are already totally controlled by arms manafacturers, pesticide, pharmaceutical, tobacco, and the other corporations they give thier money to. It is so insane, scary, and heartbreaking. If we are ever going to curb violence, we have to meet these people in the middle somewhere. The government and media keep us very divided so we can't even talk to each other. For some more reasonable folks, guns are just a normal way of life. Many people have them at home or carry in thier purses...it like the old West pioneer days...we have never been community oriented like Europe, most Americans are for the individual and thier own clan.

Open your mind thanks for the kind word also, I think we can all agree that these tragedies break lives, families, communities and hearts. Maybe one day people will trust each other and not feel the need to defend themselves with something that only creates violence and fatality. In the UK if someone is caught carrying a knife they get a 5 year prison sentence and the only people with any form of guns in the UK are the armed forces including gun police (yes gun police a special gun unit used for terrorist and other conflicting and violent events that need guns to bring a situation to a stop) all other police carry tazers but no guns are present on the normal a normal police officer. It’s sad that guns will be sold because people buy them out of fear because of violent and tragic events like this. We as humans need to learn to respect and love and show compassion to one another throughout the world and war, guns and violence will cease to exist.

Well tbh we should make it hard for crazy people to get they're hands on a gun. Like no restrictions..AT ALL? It seems way to easy to walk up in a bulding and light the place up.. 😞😞

I don't mind gun restrictions, but it's not going to change much. When you get your restrictions and madd killings by either knives, cars etc happens what are we going to do then? Just keep restricting the new murder tools?
There's still the real issue is kids growing up without stable families and bad mental health.

Eva Braun we already have car accidents and you can defend your self from a person with a knife.. But a bullet? Everyday people dont have bullet proof vests in their closets. I believe restrictions on guns would help more then cause more problems. And if nothing happens then parents or who ever buy/have guns need to watch them and not leave then un-attended enough so theyre kids can have access. If there is an emergency call the cops like a normal person.

Rather than the school system getting these kids help as required by the ADA laws that accommodation is supposed to be given to the mentally ill kids. Then they simply throw them away and let them be someone else's problem.
Each state needs public boarding schools that when kids are having behavioral problems or mentally ill problems and they can't be in a regular school... Then they send the kids to the public boarding school with clothes only and then they can give them the psychiatric help and behavior modification therapy while giving them the free education that the kids are entitled to by law. They can use farming the land with animals to get the kids to work together and learn social skills. They may not can save all of the kids but I bet they could save most of the kids.
Instead of helping these kids they throw them away and let them be someone else's problem.
The schools are getting shot up by current and former students usually based on how the kids were hurt and treated and thrown away and the kids are coming back for revenge.
It's time that the schools can't expell kids anymore and the schools take care of the kids and save them rather than toss them into society without any support system.

Mister Brookes their alternative schools are like regular schools but just have trouble makers all together. I am talking about a BOARDING school with a fence and psychiatrist help and behavior modification. I doubt if their alternative schools are any different than those in Georgia. Here kids just are bused to the alternative schools and are bused home. Their home environment should be questioned about if the child is violent etc. They learn from their parents. My niece was misbehaving acting like my nutty sister and I made her realize in grammar school that she was acting like her mama and she stopped acting like her mama and started behaving better in school. You have to treat these kids when they are in grammar school. If they recognize the problems in grammar school which they should then they can get help early on and be law abiding citizens the rest of their lives.

That's a better point that people overlook. The common denominator of all these mass school shootings is that they are all males and have been described as outcasts. Part of the issue is identity and what drove these boys to commit these crimes. Both schools and parents need to do a better job of monitoring these students whether it's through therapy or more control of bullying. I've seen many fights and kids being picked on and most teachers won't do anything besides breaking up and suspending students.

I honestly think that's a fantastic start. Not sure how to begin conditioning men to express themselves. I only cry like 1-2 times a year. I can be irritable but most stress presents itself during sleep. Some people don't realize how damaging that can be. I realize it isn't healthy but it is difficult to be vulnerable.
