    On the 28th of April 1996 Australia had a mass shooting, 35 people died including a set of 8yr old twin girls. The government made changes to gun laws and controls and mental health. They did a buy back scheme, paying money to Australians for weapons, it resulted in 63,000 weapons being handed in. Australia is known for some of the toughest gun controls in the world ... we have never had another mass shooting since. The gun man is in prison for life, we do not have the death penalty in Australia .. laws were changed so he can never be released ... God bless America ... land of the free ... ironic that it is the home of the brave ... you have to be brave because of the fear to send your child to school.

      Leandra Smith thank you for sharing this. I had no idea. I’m from Europe. To me, US gun laws and also their culture of fear towards one another is so insane. I wish they would get an outside view tinder how they are hurting each other.

      Anika d.S.P. Hi Anika it is so sad, i hope this brings change but the National Rifle Association is so large and powerful, i think it will be a struggle for them. I went through Europe on a holiday 10 years ago now, so very beautiful with so much history. May you and your family always be safe, healthy and never have to live in fear, may you live long lives of peace and happiness xx 😊

      Leandra Smith I agree with the mental health part of your argument but you cant compare Australia to the US for violent crimes per capita. Australia has no where near the population compared to the US and Australia doesn’t have the same societal issues as us; a high volume weapons and drugs being smuggled across the border is an example. There are countries that have lenient gun laws with relatively low violent crime rates and countries with strict gun laws with high rates of violent crimes while other countries are all over the map statistically. The issues we have in our country are multifaceted and intertwined with one another. From our high priced/low quality health care to aspects of our over medicated culture, there are things we have clearly neglected to address for many years and we are still suffering from the repercussions.

She now has the front to stand up and say they didn't fund an Obama initiative? I don't believe she is ernest about anything she says, soulless is how she comes across to me. With these type characters in our news and politics nothing will change regardless of what they say.

      Fuzzy Puppet Imagine if police officers weren't using a majority of their time policing CIVIL traffic offenses, and were actually patrolling the neighborhoods AND SCHOOLS. Technically, it's a conflict of interest for a peace officer to handle both criminal and civil law ( Our justice system is more concerned about collecting money from civil offenses).
      Place the highway patrol in with Dept of transportation,and let them handle the civil traffic offenses. If they come across a criminal act such as DUI or warrants, the police officer is just a radio call away patrolling our neighborhoods, like they should be!

    The Constitution was designed to be amended. It's time to amend the second amendment to follow the example of Australia. In Australia, there is tight control on semi-automatic and fully automatic weapons. These weapons are permitted for licensed individuals who require them for a purpose other than 'personal protection'. The 1996 firearm control law in Australia created a national firearm registry, a 28-day waiting period for firearm sales, tightened firearm licensing rules, and established a temporary firearm buyback program for firearms that were once legal but were made illegal by the law. There hasn't been a mass shooting (5 or more victims) in Australia since 1996. Would we avoid a mass shooting just by passing such a law? Probably not, but it's a start. All the NRA cares about is the ability of gun companies to make money. This problem we have is not about money, it's about guns being too easy to obtain.

    • @vgdodo9112
      @vgdodo9112 6 лет назад

      We have examples of what works in other countries without taking all guns away. I've found that following good examples almost always results in good conclusions. But our Congress people are beholden to the NRA due to campaign contributions and it's just sickening that they let these mass shootings continue for money. Just sickening.

    • @JeffGHealth
      @JeffGHealth 6 лет назад +1

      *@Dr. TJ*
      We will give up our firearms when the police and military give up theirs. The 2nd Amendment is a natural born right, protected under the Constitution of the United States, and is necessary to a free state. We have the right and authority under the Constitution to use force against those that try to enact such control and force-when the time comes. Your entire comment is grossly void of facts and a misunderstanding of exactly _what_ freedom is, the Constitution, and the protected rights we have therein.

      Did you miss my first two sentences? I said it's time for an amendment. If you don't have automatic or semi-automatic weapons, nobody will be taking your guns away, so stop jumping to the extreme. And if you don't care about these mass shootings, you are a heartless fool with no ability to comprehend what these shootings do to the families of the victims.

    Respectfully being from Texas. Texas had the first mass shooting in U.S. history at the University of Texas. He used a long rifle with a scope. The police only had pistols and shotguns. The students ran to their dorms and grabbed all the hunting rifles they had and began firing back at the shooter and pinned him down. It was the students that gave the police hunting rifles. It was the students that stopped that killer. I don't know how to stop all these school shootings. They are horrible. But I've just given an example of 18, 19 , 20 year olds fighting for their lives. What are we supposed to do? Give up our guns? A murderer does not care if it is legal or not to have a gun.

      Good point. By not supporting gun control I think Megyn also contributed to this tragic loss of lives since she had a public platform from which to speak. She was a puppet for Fox News until realizing after being sexually harassed and receiving no support that is all she was...nothing but a puppet. Maybe being disregarded in that way is what it took for her to see a different perspective. Things can happen for a reason. Then again, maybe she is changing her tune because it is professionally beneficial for where she now works. I hope it is for the former reason and not the latter reason.

    As disturbing as it might seem, we should show the graphic images of those children who died. People hide from the truth that's being told to them, that all evidence points to, because it does not affect them (yet). Since they don't witness these acts themselves, they are not haunted with the memories and lessons of what happened.
    And it's been the same throughout history:
    • Civil rights was at a crossroads. That was until images and video of police beating demonstrators as they were attempting to walk across Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma were shown on tv and in newpapers. A week later, President Johnson passed Voting Rights Act.
    • The same buildings that were bombed less than a decade earlier, and had no effect on policy change or legislation, suddenly became a moniker for government intervention after images of a plane flying into the towers in NYC, and humans jumping out of it's windows to their death, was shown on every TV set around the globe.
    • In 1938 Rainey Bethea was publicly hanged in Owensboro, Kentucky to a crowd of 20,000. News outlets took pictures and published them on the front pages of papers across the land. A year and a half later public executions were no longer allowed.
    • The Vietnam War was narrated by the gruesome color images sent home to Americans. When was the last time you saw a color photo from our CURRENT (and longest EVER) war in Afghanistan?
    • Images from the death camps in Poland (sue me) painted a stark understanding of just how far the path of demagoguery can go. A lesson we have forgotten, but that resulted in a global coalition against genocide.
    • The mother of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African-American boy who was lynched by a hate mob, insisted on a public funeral service with an open casket for her son so 'the world could see' what they did. Rosa Parks would later say about her infamous bus sitting protest, "I thought of Emmett Till and I just couldn't go back."
    It's the images that help people to learn the lesson without having to personally endure the sacrifice. It creates compassion, and forces empathy. 20 kids in Sandy hook, or 17 kids in Parkland, are just numbers and locations. They can not tell the full story, or instill the necessary motivation for desired change.

      People are desensitized to violence. After awhile, it won't bother them. Desensitivity to violence is one reason why you have this problem.

    • @TWoNaGe
      @TWoNaGe 6 лет назад +2

      I disagree. Wars have been fought since the dawn of time -- before there were xBoxes or Rated-R action flicks. I do believe desensitivity can lead to violence, but lets not pretend that violence hasn't always existed, and will always exist. What we can do as a society is try our best to mitigate the possibility and probability of it occurring.
      For instance, something very trivial that has had a HUGE impact is street lights. The idea that if we literally shine a light on violence people will be less prone to allow themselves to be seen committing it. People are more prone to commit crimes in the dark (literally and figuratively) .
      Rob Porter wasn't fired because he allegedly or actually stuck his wife(s). He wasn't disciplined because the allegations became public. He was fired/resigned because of the IMAGE that was released to the public. It wasn't the actual actions behind what he had done, but the visual evidence, and emotional reaction it manifests, that enacted change.
      The same can be said about Ray Rice and countless others. People can become desensitized to violence through exposure, but they can also become apathetic towards the victims and acts of violence through non-exposure.

      TWoN *German death camps that took place in Poland* I'm tired of my people being blamed for their own demises. The Germans took over Poland and started the camps. They are German. Do not blame the Polish people. Would you call them Jewish death camps? Have some respect.

    • @TWoNaGe
      @TWoNaGe 6 лет назад

      Ani
      I didn't say "Polish death camps" or "Jewish death camps", I said "death camps in Poland", which they were. I do not blame 'Poland' for getting invaded, or 'Jews' for getting captured, or 'Germany' for being afraid. I blame the ideology behind demagoguery, and if you re-read my original bullet point you would see that "demagoguery" was the evil I pointed to, not "Poland"
      However, you are right in your sentiment, and you pointing out that I quite blatantly included "Poland" in my point. It obviously detracts from the overall issue and point I was try to make which is how the dehumanization of "the other" can lead to extreme human violence, and that only visually exposing the extent of that violence can have the necessary impact to stop it -- hopefully before it starts.
      I should have said "death camps of WW2", as it not only has a more impactful appeal, but is also more accurate. I appreciate you taking the time to bring this to my attention and call me out for the misleading inference, and detraction for my overall point.
      I apologize for any offence taken or any misleading interpretation from what I wrote. My inclusion of the term "Poland (sue me)" was not meant to make an inference that Poland or it's people were responsible for the German controlled death camps. It was meant as a jab against the country's new law limiting the dialogue around the conversation, and the dangerous road that leads to.

I realize that there were 3 innocent people murdered outside of the school, and they probably had no time to react and run. This just really hurts to see so many innocent people murdered, yet again. It may literally take parents saying my child will not go back to their school until some type of security system is in place to keep our children safe. Literally go on strike to keep their children safe.

While I think mental health is a problem in this nation, we can't arrest people for being mentally ill or showing signs on social media. What if these people showed all the signs but have done nothing, there's no law against it. This is a hard subject with a lot of layers. I believe the NRA and U.S. Government are complicit. I think there are over 200 religions in the world with thousands of God's and hundreds more removed from history. We are taught these ideas at an age where you have no critical thinking skills and you quite happily accept the idea of Santa and the Easter bunny. Pretty much everyone follows the religion of their parents in the rare exceptions they turn to the closest God of their culture. There is a trend where the poorer countries have higher religious rates due to desperation (America being the exception to the rule.). We need a couple of hundred years before we move past this as a species.

There is no reason someone needs an AR-15 or any other semi automatic. Children will continue to die because some Americans are too incompetent and corrupt to actually resolve anything.

    This is so sad. Prayers and thoughts from Toronto . School should be safe for All children. There should be a change in gun legislation. There are people who own guns and lock them up properly I would hope that is the case. Megyn you use your platform for good and that is amazing. Bless all that are working to make it a safer place for all.

    Last Thursday I was telling someone it's sad you can't send your child to school or go to church & feel safe! The news clip when he said,"It's hard to identify them because most don't have an ID on them". How can anyone hear this & it not affect you? I guess now every school year make them take a picture for a ID card with a chip on to wear around their neck & have to scan it when entering school! Instead why don't we stop this from ever happening again, we have to stand up & demand if not it won't!

    • @jjpotter5656
      @jjpotter5656 6 лет назад +1

      Hannah Kitsch, Exactly, how do you prevent them getting into the wrong hands, stricter controls and penalties. The shooter was disgruntled and mentally unstable and should not have got his hands on that gun. It is not going to prevent this from happening all together, but even if there is a 85% decrease it is better than nothing. In my 30 years of being here I cannot remember a single mass shooting at school.

    Guns and other weapons have been around forever. Maybe start using them to protect soft targets? Its something that any community can do. Go buy a gun and stand guard at a school. Do something yourself, dont wait on others.

    • @lazyatthedisco
      @lazyatthedisco 6 лет назад +2

      Three ways to see this from (d)evolving:
      1. Budget will skyrocket if it is a personal security guard. Impossible to implement and nothing gets done. Mass shooting next week on a school nearby you.
      2. Law gets passed, assigned teacher gets chosen to carry a weapon inside school. Since most likely the teacher assigned will be a a NRA entusiastic nutjob, next thing you know teachers (due to being fired, suspended, or any other aggravation) will commit mass shootings with the same weapon that was supposed to protect the kids..
      3. Law gets passed, assigned teacher gets chosen to carry a weapon inside school. Kids know who the teacher is, most likely will be the first person to come down in the mass shooting. Probably the shooter will grab the gun from his dead body, and commits the mass shooting with the same weapon that was supposed to protect the kids.
      But hey, you have your 2nd amendment, so yay freedom.
