Matt I admire your strong work ethics, at 82 years of age I am still plugging away but find more pleasure watching you work, my MOS was heavy equipment operator in the service, first civilian job was on a D-7 cat cable operated blade and dragging a 15 yard pan to level land in the San Joaquim valley in California in 1960, we used the blade to push other pans through the cut, I have to go fix lunch and think about your old drag line you dragged out today

First off I want to say thank you so very much for keeping my husband entertained, he loves watching your videos while he's housebound. You see, my husband was in a triple trauma motorcycle accident, the bike malfunctioned. I was following him with our truck and trailer full of lumber when the back tire started wobbling, something flew across the highway, his body rode the guardrail 1050' while going 70 mph. Injuries sustained were 2 crushed legs; he's got 6 more weeks before SOME mobility, we get him around using a transfer board, and has an amputated left arm from below the shoulder. He'll be getting a basic prosthetic arm based on body movement with a hook/claw so he can do the building, masonry, blacksmith/forging and helping others. He's not one to sit for long. You're great with your hands and have phenomenal mechanical skills while he's a Master Mason and anal OCD builder. He's in great spirits, very positive, and determined to be just as good if not better with his prosthetic arm. The Myo Robotic Prosthetic Arm will come later; he still has another 6 months of healing before any arm can go on. With this all said, you Matt, have kept him entertained and interested. He loves watching your videos; he just made me buy him a hat and 2 t shirts, he's a nut I tell ya. Anyhow, if you're ever in the Northern NH Pittsburg aka God's Country area, look us up, he'll show you his building projects. He was working on building his 38 x 38 garage aka Man Cave when his accident happened, his friends in the trade are all coming together to get this Man Cave built and buttoned up for the winter. You see, he's the type to help without asking and literally give the coat off his back, it's heartfelt to see his friends and our neighbors come to bat for him. He's also got his 20 x 20 foundation for his Forging shed/building sitting out there that'll have to wait until spring, no time now, he has 0 mobility. So just want to thankyou for keeping him occupied. Diesel Creek is definitely helping him get through this bump in the road. All our best from N.H.

Matt, when I watch your videos I feel at home. I worked for small construction companies for years. Always a mix n match of auction buys. My boss would buy 5 worn OUT Macks from a paving company. We would build 2-3 out of it. I learned way back then companies this size didn't have a scrap yard. The boss set us straight about his " reserve equipment parking lot". I miss the comaraderie of a small company that runs like a swiss watch. All the brands of machinery, suppliers, salesmen, and ALL the factors, EPA, supply, the list goes on. I can tell you've got it together. All the right judgement in so many places. I respect that. It takes a special person to be able to perform under these conditions and keep your cool.
Man, your place looked like my place when we first acquired it. Looked like Easdtern Kentucky rural junkyard. When we started working on the property, we lived in a 20 ft ccotainer. my first major purchase was a manufactured home, with beds and Plumbing. What a step up!! Two years in that, then move into a house. Couiple of tons of scrap steel hauled off and sold, excavate for septic system. Movin' on up. bought a kubota end loader / backhoe, helped a lot.
You could try to use the wood chip under the implements against weeds. A couple inch layer might do the trick, and it won't kill your trees. Also nice to hear my old friend the belt squeal 😂😂
And if you burn you that broken pallet and scrap wood, you can use a MAGNET to retrieve any nails that are left. 🧐
Love the "Unit" dragline, it must be like trying to drive a tilt a whirl without the lock for the cab!

I have operated a Tilt-O-Whirl. One important design feature is the operator does NOT spin with the rid! LOL.

That ventrack is got to be one of the best writing tractor lawn mower types that i've ever seen
Your enthusiasm when anything starts up after a prolonged absence of attention is noteworthy. That is a testament to old iron. Semi running and still drives fairly well.
As a kid growing up I always did enjoy watch heavy equipment at work and enjoyed watching this ...I was a kid again for almost a Hour ..and yes I did watch this video with my new diesel Creek hat on Great hat love how it fits with the Flex band ..Thanks Matt for being here for guys like me that has nothing better to do on a Sunday morning 👍
Once pallets are burned, a magnet can get the nails out of the ashes.
Then they are scrap.
I keep a burn barrel going for nail filled wood, and a magnet to clean up after. Works great

Might need a big Crane size electromagnet to get nails reliably. And a big scraper for collecting the nails. The Harbor freight magnetic sweep bars won't be strong enough. 14:34
Get Beton Blocks as backstops for the Dirt and Gravel piles, and the skid loader for organizing the Topsoil and Clay soil fill piles. 19:38
Might need to flash the field on the Generator, or swap in an Alternator. And fix the fuel tank and lines. 30:12 Exhaust a little later.
A suggestion for the Unit, Turn the house around, so the boom pins are opposite the track drive trains. Then cross chain from from one boom pin to the opposite track frame. Maybe the end of the crossbeam that goes over the track frame, and under he car body. Then cross chain the opposite way from the other boom pin. This will keep the house locked, and the power to the vertical travel shaft from turning the house, and turn the tracks only.
On your boom truck, you need to bite the bullet, and get a new hoist wire. Old, dry, rusty wire will not lay right. You will start breaking strands, and the wire will part. Be safe, hoist wires need to be keep in good condition, so they don't fail.

Glyphosate.. only affects what it is sprayed on, works through leaf absorbtion (disrupts chlorophyll production.. plant dies) and doesn't contaminate soil.

Glyphosate is an extremely efficient anti-microbial product, targeting almost exclusively the beneficial microbes.
The beneficial soil microbes are very sensitive to glyphosate, with extreme results at even very low concentrations (as low as .01 ppm). So applying glyphosate essentially wipes out your protective soil microorganisms, leaving it open to the proliferation of pathogenic organisms (disease).

We had a 22RB dragline on electro magnet that had a non functioning swing brake. When travelling it around the steelworks we placed a large bolt through a hole between the swing rollers to stop the Waltzer effect. Love , health and respect from Scotland UK
I love watching these old diesels start again after sitting for a year or more. That's what made this country great. Excellent work.

Your ground bee problem made my skin crawl. I've been attacked by them more times than I want to remember. Just last week I disturbed a small hive in my front yard. We had them nearby some yrs ago. This time they surprised me. I got one in the edge of my left nostril; one on a finger, one under my arm(thru my work shirt) and four on my left thigh(this time thru my heavy work pants). I took some epinephrine, smeared Benedryl, and a baking soda paste. I wasn't worth spit for two days.

Wow, that cutter brings back memories, my uncle had a dairy farm and in the summer school holidays, my bro, sis and me used to help him with the hay making.
It was 60 years ago, so my memory might not be as sharp, but his grass cutter looked identical to that one, towed behind his MF tractor.
Spent many a tedious time filing the triangular blades on the cutter-bar.
But using it, the turner and the bailer was a heap of fun for a city-dwelling 10-year old kid. I loved my 6 weeks camping on his farm. ❤️🇷🇴

It appears to me that one of the greatest investments you made has been the $1400. 00 crane truck including the repairs. It seems to be more than expected handy to have as you have used it a LOT!

Growing up on the farm we had a small grove of trees near the house. It was fenced and pigs were in it. (Also the occasional junker vehicle or implement.)
Every spring mom would make dad lock the pigs in their shed and she'd take all of us kids into that grove for "cleanup day".
We picked up downed branches and threw them over the fence into the yard. These would be the makings of one awesome bonfire later that evening with promised hotdogs and smores!
We picked up trash, cut back weeds, fixed fence...you name it. While we worked VERY hard, it was always sort of fun. It was different, and the bonfire was always a huge hit!
Dad would call the neighbors to let them know we were going to burn branches in the yard so they wouldn't call the fire dept!
A skid loader would have been a godsend on those "cleanup" days❗️👍
I think this is every boy's dream, and also every boy inside adult men's dream. I'm from Netherlands and there's no way you can have these plots of land just sitting there, that's awesome to me

Matt, I am originally from Vermont, and my uncle who is gone now, had 2 of the biggest John Deere tractors, the tires were about 7 ft tall, he once told me that they had 1 piston, the size of a 5 gallon bucket! i have never evev seen any Deers down here in Virginia that size!
Matt, exactly as you said, lawn art. I would put them up at the fence line on display. Who knows, maybe someone will see them and want to buy something. The farm will have some character with them out front!
That track loader is an absolute workhorse...I would have never guessed it was powerful enough to move that orange truck around on its own...

If I recall when he got it he said something to the effect of "It's more than I need". Funny how every time someone says that I soon see them using the machine to the maximum of its capabilities! :)
Those Taks are even better than the big Case skid steers (and the a/c works better, too).
Weed cloth. Water will run through it nothing will grow through it. Gravel on top. You can drive on it. You can't slide anything on it!

A suggestion for dealing with thorn's... I've had to pull away a lot of thorn bushes in my time and what you need are good gloves ... No not the ones you're thinking of ... Animal gloves, specifically falconer's gloves - they go up to the elbow and are thick enough to not get pierced by the most annoying eagle ... Er ... Thorn bush
I know it sounds a little silly till someone points it out and you think about it and go "damnit, why didn't someone tell me that 20 years ago!"

There is nothing like the feeling you get when you transform a piece of property like this! It's like a "will it run" video, except with dirt instead of machinery... and with Diesel Creek, you get both! Honestly, with some of the stuff you find/already have, most folks only see scrap metal-- until you throw a battery into it and start it up! Still one of my favorite RUclips channels...
I’m still bummed he didn’t snag that Ford tractor where he got the Cat loader and Fay Alice. I think it had a Dearborn loader on it, which are highly desirable.
Looks like another happy day of moving A to B to C to A. I have much experience of this and with old age comes wisdom. Prioritise some repairs and shift out what you will never get round to using. Because you will run out of time as you get older. Great stuff as always from the UK.

Use Glyphosate 41% concentrate. Make a 2% mix by mixing a quart to 12.5gallons of water. You’ll probably have to spray twice a year. But it shouldn’t bother your trees.

Thanks for bringing us along Matt! I know I find it satisfying when I move my implements around and clean up my tree line. I will burn stuff with nails, but only in one area, then I use a big magnet to pick them up.
Wish I had the equipment you have and be able to do the things you do with it. You are my hero.
Hell just start buying it!! That what I’m doing!! Same as this feller! They are cheeper the older more beat you get!! And you get to spend time fixing it up so a win win in my book!! All about perspective!!
Hello Matt; Here's a tip, spray some diesel fuel on the tracks, chains, sprockets and everything else that's making noise. Do it again in a few days then try to move it. Those tracks have a lot of travel. I'd adjust them before too long or you'll throw one. Later,

Weed killer suggestion: 30% vinegar solution. It’s sold at the big box stores or just amazon. Only takes a light spraying on ground cover and they’re dead, won’t hurt the trees unless you use a fire hose. Works substantially better than stuff like round up and all it is is strong vinegar.

@@Naltddesha I think they are really meant for maintaining land that is too steep for a conventional mower/compact tractor. It's a lot cheaper to buy a fancy articulating tractor than flatten or terrace a hillside to make maintenance on a conventional tractor safe.
@Fuch RUclips That Ventrac will tackle sideslopes you wouldn't go near wit ha skid steer. And, pretty much any 3-point implement can be fit to the back--so the tools might not be VT, but kubota and the like will work. That VT is a bit more stingy on fuel than the average skid steer, too. I'm biased, I loved mine. And my hands almost could not get them in a jam.

Got to watch those BROWN RECLUSE SPIDERS at 22:21 ! Spray the foliage (thorns, briars, weeds) with cheap dishwashing detergent mixed with some diesel fuel. The dishwashing liquid and diesel dry out preventing the leaves from photosynthesis/breathing. It even kills poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. A person that rented crappy houses out taught me that trick.
That urge to clean up happens from time to time. But, Matt, you make it look more like fun than work. I loved this video. It’s cathartic. Thank you.

Lessee, my guesses for the farm implements: I'm gonna say you've got a rusty-whatsis, a corrodo-domajigger, a busted-thing-a-whatsy, and half of a dirt-scratcher, none of which will actually fit any of your current equipment, not even the old drag-lines from the 30s. It wouldn't actually surprise me if some of it was meant to be hitched to horses! BTW, Matt, when you have to use a crane-truck to get some of your toys out of the brush even before you can take a brush-hog to the weeds, that's often an indication that you have things laying around that you just don't need any longer. 😂
Take those old peace of equipment and paint them up and put them at edge of your property with some mulch under them, edge around it, put few flowers and put sign, Diesel creek farm, would be really cool.
You have such a fun variety of machines! Gotta say the Unit Dragline is really high on the list of your projects I would like to see completed - it'd make a good companion for Christine at the steam show, haha. Looking forward to it once you get your shop built!

It's always good to get everything cleaned up and organized before winter hits and everything gets muddy or slick. Makes working in the cold so much easier when you get to what you need without working in brush.

Hello Matt, your ground bees are most likely wasps which can and do sting multiple times and usually become aggressive if there are vibrations or if someone approaches the nest. Please use caution.
The "ground bees" look like plain old yellow jackets. In the south they may live above ground, but prefer underground in cooler climes. There are many fun ways of dispensing of them on RUclips.
From the title, I was concerned that some projects might be leaving for the scrapyard. Glad that I was wrong. Things look nice and tidy now. Like probably everyone else, I'm wondering if the shop will get built before winter.
Yeah but that dragline is a massive POS, sometimes letting stuff go is for the best and i think that’s the case with that unit

I've been using a "white vinegar, little bit of salt and dish soap" concoction on the weeds in my gravel driveway and it seems to work decent. It's supposed to dry out the leaves of the weeds and if you spray the weeds often it will eventually kill em. Hope that helps. Always enjoy your videos keep it up
Use the same 1 gallon vinegar 4cups epson salt 2 tablespoons dawn dishwashing liquid. See results in couple hours.

Having worked for over 40 years in highway and bridge contract management, there was something satisfying to see the machines void of weeds and the grading process to help with drainage. I also like to see the machines I was around at the beginning of my career running again. I guess I miss being around it to some extent. Those cable driven machines (old shovels in particular) were a real workout for an operator. And you are absolutely correct about the wood chips. It is ground cover that holds moisture and degrades pretty quickly to compost but helps significantly with erosion. Good video.
Burn the pallets and then get a large magnet and drag it through the ash pile to collect the nails, also drag the magnet around where they were sitting as I’d bet there are already some left there!
A “magnet fishing” magnet would be best followed closely by the magnet off the back of a bass speaker. Put the magnet in a sock / pop bottle to make removing the small bits of rust a darn sight easier!
I cant fathom the projects. You cant make this up. I would love to own the land and the buildings you made. I've had a stroke and can't do anything much more than anything. Love to you!
Looks like it's almost time to tension tracks on the Takeuchi. If they're anything like a Cat machine, there should be no sag on top. As for a tree safe weed killer, I like Preen. It's a pre-emergent, so it won't kill existing plants. Put it on heavy and it does a great job. We used it all the time when I was a landscaper.

Matt brings "having the cleanies" to a whole new level! Looking good. Herbicide of choice is Roundup, but have no idea of the long term effect on surrounding trees....gonna guess, not recommended, it's pretty "deadly" stuff. Wishing you and Mrs. Diesel Creek a Happy Labor Day.
Glyphosate is a direct contact herbicide. It has no measurable long term soil effects and won’t effect the trees. Most of it breaks down into CO2 in a few weeks.
RoundUp is not active in soil, it is absorbed by the leaves and is transported downward to kill the roots. It will not hurt the trees you have there. I've used it for years.
Only goes through leaves. Goes inert when on soil

Matt, haven’t heard of ground bees before but I’ve dealt with underground yellow jacket wasp nests when digging up old rotting stumps. They are MEAN and will chase you. A 1/2 gallon of gas and a match will do wonders eliminating them.
That’s exactly what these were
Back around 1960, I was 10-11 years old, helping my dad and grandpa clear the brush and undergrowth from our summer cabin property. I was assigned the task of chopping out smaller tree stumps so the lawnmower wouldn’t hit them.
As I swung my 3’ long handled, double bladed axe into a rotted stump, a swarm of VERY angry 🐝 came forth and proceeded to whup my butt. One in particular nailed me twice in my right temple and it felt like a red-hot poker to the brain. I screamed like a girl, threw the axe up in the air, and started running for the cabin, wasps in pursuit. My mom heard my scream, panicked and ran outside thinking I had chopped my foot off. My dad and grandpa also hurried in with similar thoughts. After inspecting me and seeing no other damage than the raised knot on my temple, everyone calmed down and I got an ice bag for my head. Dad went back to the stump I was working on , poured1/2 gallon of gas on the stump and lit it off, killing the 🐝 as they tried to flee.
I got the rest of the day off and got ice cream!
PS If you have poison ivy vines on your trees that you want to get rid of, cut the vines near ground level and let the top die out first before trying to pull it down, so the sap dries up. It’s the sap that causes the skin reaction when you get it on you. Also be careful if burning poison ivy plants and vines. The sap will vaporize in the heat and condense on your cooler skin, same as touching it and if you happen to breathe in the smoke, you can get a poison ivy rash inside your lungs. My grandpa spent two weeks in the hospital after doing so when they were burning the brush piles during the lot clearing. Stay safe!
Grass/Weed Killer: 1 cup salt. 1 gal white vinegar. 1 tablespoon dawn. A touch of isopropyl alcohol. Good vid.

That would be awesome to try and bring those implements back to life! I love to restore old “junk” and put it back to work in the field
Call me a sad git, but it is just so rewarding to see a good clear up like that. If it was me, l would just burn the pallets and then go through and pick out all the nails, as had been said before.

Matt, one thing that I use as a substitute for Round-up and products like that is the following formula: Mix thoroughly one-gallon white vinegar, two cups Epsom salt, 1/4 cup Dawn dish soap. Very efficient, cheap and I believe environment friendly. I always enjoy watching your videos. For several years, I owned a hobby farm and could not afford new stuff, so I purchased used equipment that I had to work on more than I was able to use them on the farm. I have experienced much of what shows up in your videos. Brings back memories. Thanks!!
Im not gonna lie the crane truck is definitely my favourite vehicle on the channel
I learned from Andrew that you're supposed to tie the forward lever of the dozer with a bungee for a power assist and then drive the crane the best you can running between the two. What could possibly go wrong?

Looking good!!! I had a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit diesel pickup like yours. Would sip fuel all day long. Got 50 mph. Wish I still had it.

Matt, I agree with you, the most satisfying part of a big yard job is looking at & admiring your hard work. I kinda miss that these days, after becoming physically disabled, so that's one of the reasons I enjoy your videos. Great job!

If you have belts that talk to you spray them with Armorall spray for seats and dash boards it works like crazy and is good for the rubber and plastic . Try it you’ll love .
Yes, yard cleanup is a very visually rewarding job. Many of us are so jealous of all your wonderful tools to use, too. You're blessed with the bounty of all of them, too. To stop a lot of growth for a longer time, put down cardboard and cover it with wood chips. From then on (after about 2 years) it's easier to pull growth out because the roots don't sink down as much in chips. I only have a 25x30' lawn. The rest of my 1/3 acre plantation is either house or wood chips. Annually, I deal with the bird dropped blackberries. Ugh.
Well, I wish you were local. There's the matter of the 7' diameter redwood tree which some idiot planted directly over my septic main line about 30 years ago. It has to go. Does anybody want it? Anybody? I'm in So Oregon.

You could make an electro magnet attachment, it would make a good short project video, an iron bar, a reel of insulating wire and power source.
