There's such a tension in this song and it never seems to resolve.
Another song with those vibes is Staring at the Sun by TV on the Radio. It's really a brilliant way to structure a song, all build, no release.
I adore the minimalist arrangement of this version. It's completely driven by his voice and emotions. The music just creates textures to accent his voice.

My god what a simmering and wicked sounding interpretation of this song. The slowed down pace really lets the lyrics stick to you; I’m in love with this version thank you Mr. Peck for thinking to cover it and for recontextualizing the original by giving it a trans twist just with one word in one lyric……. “to thine ownself be true” will never sound the same now
Not being a country music fan, except for Orville, lol, I had no idea this was a cover. So I went and watched that video. It’s amazing that he only changed one word, yet it fit perfectly. This version is definitely darker and I love it.

Kudos for taking on a song that artists shy away from because of the shear amount of words. Then the trans spin. Then the notes you choose to hold that even Reba didn't.. Then the slight Jack White vibe at the end. I mean, I can hardly contain myself. So, so good.

Oh man. Reba is one of my favorite country singers and Fancy (I know Reba covered it but her version) is one of my favorite songs of all time. This version hit my heart HARD. I’m a trans man and though this may be more geared towards describing a trans woman I identify with this just the same. Dude I haven’t legit cried in years but this had me sobbing. This is an amazing version of the song and now a favorite! Thank you so much!

I sort of left country behind and gave up on it in the mid nineties, and these days I'm still more of a rock & roll girl, but you are bringing back everything I loved about country in the 80's as a kid and are then building beautiful things on top of it. Thank you.

This version of the song is just captivating. It feels like you've summoned the very spirit of Fancy, and she's possessed you to tell her story.
Also it baffles me when people say that making Fancy trans "makes" the song political, when its a song about how abject poverty can force women into survival sex work, and how they're still _people_ who deserve dignity and respect. What about that _isn't_ political?
Anyway this is one of my absolute favorite songs, and has been since i was a little kid in the back of my own Mama's car, and Orville has brought it an incredible amount of fraught emotion _and_ transfemininity, which, as a trans guy, i deeply love.
