Hey man, so I have a question, I'm currently on a 2003 300ex (in my profile pic if youre curiously) and I've been trying to find a 450 that had electric start and reverse, and I saw that the kawasaki kfx450r had those, buy the more research I did the more problems I found... so I decided to look into the 400 platforms (my dad has a 99 400ex), and I have had bad experiences with suzuki in the past, so I decided to look more into the kawasaki kfx400s as they met my needs so far with the research ive done, and since they are the same as the ltz this video really helps, do you think the kfx400 would be a good choice?
The KFX450R is a pretty solid and reliable quad but I don't feel they have a whole lot to offer over the 400's in terms of performance. The KFX400 is a good quad but I would search for one of the later ones. It is an LTZ400, every part on it is Suzuki so it would almost be foolish to limit your search to just a KFX. Any machine/brand can give you a bad taste in your mouth. I have owned (2) 400ex's and both have given me more problems than any other quad I have ever owned lol. I don't hold that against Honda or the 400ex. It is all in how it was maintained and ridden by the previous owner. Buy the newest and best condition one that you can afford and you should be fine but just know the newest one is now 14 years old.
Hey Travis, don't bother with full flight. Alba is a better setup and much better customer service and after sale support. If you can swing it give Dave Herron @ JD Performance a call and get a quote. Tell him I sent you. Great guy, product is well priced, and they are THE BEST arms you can buy for the money. Everything is bent and welded by him, and he uses the best Italian made FRAP ball joints. Good luck!
Funny you mentioned some people leaving their 400’s for a 450. I had a Yamaha raptor 350 and wanted to stay with Yamaha and the next thing up was only a 450. So my cousin’s that had KFX400 and LTZ400 sold their bikes just cause I was on the YFZ450R and they would out ride me in the trails on there 400’s but just because someone got a 450 they wanted one also. 400’s are more then capable to run with 450’s and at the end it’s all about rider skill level. Great video really informative.
Yep I think you hit the nail on the head! If you want a 450 get a 450. If you feel like you "need" one that might not always be the case. None of us can ride a 450 to it's full potential and I think the pro stock class at the ATV nationals was proof of that. It's a shame that class is no more, was very fun to watch!
Mr. Riggs where do I even start? What crystal ball are you looking through lol this is the exact question that keeps replaying in my head over and over. In march 2021, one of my dreams came true and after a year of consulting people and researching I felt that the z400 was the best choice for a quad and we luckily found one that wasnt abused. Im 16 and to this day still havent gotten the chance to ride anywhere but my street. The z has the drz mod, rejet, pro cuircut head with lexx slip on, some other stuff but nothing big like a big bore or crank. My friends have 450s and they ride in the sand and the constant question is did I mess up by not buying the 450? When I test rode the quad it felt like pure madness, the first time I went to buy it I decided to not do so because I felt it was too fast. But then I realised Id adjust to the speed. But the question still persisted, can I keep up with 450s who werent racing but definetely riding agressively? after consulting many facebook groups and forums ive decided to keep the z and hopefully it wont bite me in the ass. Thanks for the great video!
Hey George! Thanks for watching. I think you did good getting the Z400 and as long as you maintain it and upgrade it here and there it should long out last the 450s. Good luck and have fun!
I've thought about it but probably not. I've already had an LTR and while I appreciate the technology and ease of use I much prefer the simplicity of carb bikes. I guess I'm just an old school carb guy.
I love the video but I must say 1 thing. There is absolutely no way that a 400 is even going to compare it to a 700. I've had both and my raptor will walk a banshee. Obviously it's stupid modded now but stock would smoke a 400. Gotta be rider error.
Smoke it in what? A drag race? I sure hope so, it's a much more powerful engine. What I am saying in fast paced XC type riding the 700s are big, heavy, and not nearly as nimble as a 400/450 and while you can keep up with a pack on one, they will tire you out due to their weight and high center of gravity. I owned a built long travel 700R for 3 years and while I loved it (and miss it), it was a big/heavy sport quad. Felt like you were riding a bull instead of a horse.
@@PatrickRiggs33 she handles like a dream LSR long travel factory R model shocks but have been rebuilt and revalved to my weight. Steering stabilizer. And a little bit bigger tires. All in all I've got about 20 grand into my raptor is a trail monster. Sxs is about my only competition.
@@PatrickRiggs33 you as well have a great set up. Every machine will have its quirks throw enough money at it and eventually your problem can be alleviated. I also run the same LSR eccentric bearing carrier that you have those are really really good.

Do you have a link or company name for Matt Blaumel for rebuilding my stock 05 shock set? Thanks.
I have heard he is a little harder to get a hold of these days. Here is his email:

If you can't get a hold of him try Kevin Groff at Jogaca Suspension or Rocket Ron.
Thanks. Have a good day
Suzuki and cracking frames.... nothing has changed since the 80s lol. It is a nice looking machine though.
Haha for sure. Unfortunately, all the frames from all the manufacturers will crack eventually. Just part of the game 🙂
@@PatrickRiggs33 - The thing is from personal experience I've cracked multiple Suzuki frames and never another brand though. I am curious about this 400 as I'm looking to get something a little more comfortable than a Blaster (which I was given for free from my boss) I could get a brand new Raptor 700 though...
Awesome video buddy! Thanks for all the great info. That is maybe the best lookin' Z I have every seen! Way to go. BTW you painted more of the frame blue right? Some of it is navy stock but you did more?
Thank you! Yes sir I did.
Kfx 400 was my first sport quad back in 2006 😎 our property at the time backed up to core land so I have a lot of good memories on that quad. When the ltr 450 came out I had to have one and I ended up trading it in. Even to this day after owning built ktm’s, ltr’s, and Yfz 450r’s if I ever see my orange/black kfx 400 come up for sale I am buying it back 😎👍 lots of tips in this video I did not know about with not building on the 400 platform yet.
Kfx 400 all day 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I wish I would of seen this a long time ago lol! I bought my first quad a year ago, and have ran into some problems but I just really like the 400 so much and i’m trying to rebuild it and this helped out a lot! I have an 03 LTZ 400 bored it out to a 434 ended up having to buy a brand new OEM carb and it the fixed the bogging down issue and it got tuned and new jets for it. But now need to go the route for a swing arm, chain, sprocket, A-arms, calipers, rear axles, and I think my quad would look really good. Really liked the video thanks for sharing feed back for someone who knows a little bit but not enough!
Appreciate the kind words! Sounds like you have a cool build on your hands. Unless you are just doing straight line/ drag stuff the Z400 benefits most from suspension upgrades. Have fun!
Very well said have a 89 250r with a big bore 350 love it bought a z 400 restored it and now it’s bad ass doses all the models of the z 400 have a over flow bottle for the coolant
Yes, they all have an overflow bottle from the factory.
@@PatrickRiggs33 thanks the z400 I bought did not have 1 but now it does love the z but the swing arm is junk witch one did u put on your z

Hey pat is that your old ltz or is it a different one bcuz I know u had a ltr swing arm
No sir its my current
What u do with the other one oh shit that's right u had said in one of your videos that it was your wife's right

I appreciate that! Definitely!
Hey man I have a 2003 KFX400, what Yanet raptor brake calipers should I get, what’s front shocks should I get not trying break the bank but want to see what I can get.
I would get 2004-2008 YFZ450 Calipers. Get 05+ Stock LTZ400 shocks, or any year TRX450R front shocks.
For a 160lbs rider as me, are 2007 stock shocks better than Trx450 shocks? I don't know if there is much difference but last ones are well known.
Your LTZ is super clean! I love my. 2003 still has all the lemon parts like the shocks and subframe but I haven’t had a frame crack yet. I really hope it doesn’t but I don’t do any racing just sand dunes and woods/hill climbing so I think it’ll be fine but they are for sure very reliable.
Thank you! Yep I think you will be just fine with that 03'. If it's made it this long you are in the clear!! It was the pro class racers back in 02'-04' that were exposing the weaknesses of the 400 platform.
@@PatrickRiggs33 I feel it is too.
My favorite thing about the Z400 is that its a KTM.
It is?!?!?!?!?
@@kaidencranefield2990 well yeah, would ya just look at it?!
Can anyone tell me what the carbon fiber guard things are for that partially cover the front shocks. Thanks!
The quadtech radiator scoops? No longer being produced unfortunately.
Any advise on where I could get a FULL set of plastics up here in Canada?
Scored a nice 03 LTZ with no cracks and low hours but has no plastics, brake pads or seat. Traded my $500 Pit Bike for it LOL and it runs great as far as I can tell. Haven't REALLY driven it as I got no brakes.. But everything seems really good.
Since its missing its brake pad retainers I'm going to go with your recommendation and get the YMZ450 dual piston calipers for sure!
Thanks!
Have you tried Maier?
@@PatrickRiggs33 Wow! They are the cheapest option I've seen BY FAR! Thanks man!! :D
Indefinite wait for parts now, if they ever arrive
Dude no kidding...Rocky Mountain ATV/MC is about the only reliable source.
So would you advise against an 04 ltz/Kfx and only get 05+?
Great question. Not necessarily. I would buy the newest one you can afford. I had an 04' and never had an issue with it 👍

Some solid info Patrick! I have been wanting a 434 kit for my Z for a while now and that dream is coming true soon!! Mine as of right now has a set of Stage 1 Hotcams, FMF Powerbomb header, Q4 Silencer and a few other things. It surprised me when it kept up with my Dads cousins TRX450R with a HRC Cam! Well, it kept up to about 4th gear and the 450 starts to pull away, lol! And I am running stock springs with those Hotcams for about 2 years and haven’t really had any weird problems, on Motosports Website they didnt say anything about stiffer valve springs when I ordered the cams. But hey, shes still runnin good!! And thats a nice effin quad you got there!!
Ltz400 or dvx400 thats the real question!
Not sure if they still make them, but I have a Burgard swingarm which uses all my old 250r axle ,carrier, brakes . 434 kit here as well, hot cams ,250r a-arms,dynatek cdi , drz base gasket. It needs about 100 octane to not ping ,but it rips. Stock carb rejetted, 400 ex intake boot . Pretty mean lil machine .
What are the rear tires you have on it here?
gbc xc master
@@PatrickRiggs33 awesome man! They look great! I’m hopefully getting a quad this year or next and will definitely be putting those tires on the back! 👍🏻

@@PatrickRiggs33 that is true, I guess I'll widen my market and also look at the ltz's
What do you think about alba and fullflight a arms? And what do you think about the fullflight swing arm?
Hey Travis, don't bother with full flight. Alba is a better setup and much better customer service and after sale support. If you can swing it give Dave Herron @ JD Performance a call and get a quote. Tell him I sent you. Great guy, product is well priced, and they are THE BEST arms you can buy for the money. Everything is bent and welded by him, and he uses the best Italian made FRAP ball joints. Good luck!
Does anyone know wheee to get that rear grab bar from?
Directly from AC Racing.
Great video 🙂
What part number are the shocks
830-24-013
I would love a video on how you installed fcr carburetor frome jetlabs

Good luck and have fun!
why I love Suzuki
hey bud were do you ride? i am in sw florida as well
Hey man, I ride primarily at Croom
How did you make it wide
I fed it double cheeseburgers
Are you thinking about ever getting the 2nd gen z
I've thought about it but probably not. I've already had an LTR and while I appreciate the technology and ease of use I much prefer the simplicity of carb bikes. I guess I'm just an old school carb guy.
My ltz is pretty cool I bought it a couple weeks and it has a raptor 660 engine in it
I hope to have mine as clean as yours one day but you did sell me on the fcr carburetor form jet labs
Appreciate the kind words! You will love the FCR.
@@PatrickRiggs33 Thanks still waiting on it should be any week now he about 5 weeks out these days sounds like worth the wait
Does it matter what year yfz caliper? Thinking of doing this mod
It should not, but I would shoot for 04'-08' Carbed Model YFZ.
super clean ltz!
Thanks!
@@PatrickRiggs33 I ride in the Rocky mountains of Colorado. I can keep up with the bikes on a big heavy lug. All my buddies have dirt bikes

Lol the ds450 weighed 348 pounds …
You are 100% right. I don't know why I said that haha. I feel like I remember an interview from 10 years ago with Mike Walsh where he was saying the engine from the DS450 was nearly 90 pounds or something to that effect, substantially heavier than the CRF engines he plugs into his hybrids.
