Hello from Germany! What they eat at the end was called "Negro Kiss, or Moor head" until the 70's, this candy still exists, and today it is called "Chocolate Kiss or Dickmann"! When we were kids there was a game: "Who's afraid of the black man" and the others shouted "Nobody". Who had to catch cried:"And if he comes "?And the others answer:"then we run"!That was a game where one was the black man and had to catch the others. Great reaction, and do it keep it up!👍

So in German "schwarzen Mann" does literally translate to "black man" but it is also their word for what we in American English call "the bogyman". They're using it to mean both things, a bit of clever wordplay. They are talking about the fact everyone is now afraid of "the other" or "the bogeyman" and whatever that might be to each person. But also they are hinting at the racially-motivated fear we see and hear, so literally the "black man".
Till is supposed to be an influencer or politician, spreading hate and fear to the people. Everyone is consuming it through the computers. In one scene, the screen is literally glued to their faces, a play on the saying we use. So everyone is hearing what Till is saying, and the negativity is represented by the wires all turning red. As the song goes on, Till's voice and facial expressions become more and more crazy, to show us how the mistrust and fear becomes more extreme over time.

Nice reaction, hope it won't get blocked.
    How I see their video:
The media and politicians paint the World black and white, but it is colorful. The Red is the color of danger/a threat, that is shown going from the microphone the crazy leader (Till in a straitjacket) into the TVs of the people, who are sucked into the wrong depiction of the World on the TV. The Red is also visible in Till's eyes (Feuer), and right before the end of the song (not the video) when he's out of the straitjacket, the entire screen is Red as he screams. The fearmongering of the politicians with the help of their cheerleaders and by TV leads to the open/welcoming society to build walls, to weaponize the people, to watch eachother, because the threat is not coming from the outside anymore, but they see their neighbors as the enemies. And in the end switch off, go outside, enjoy the beautiful colorful world.

The line "Who's afraid of the black man?" from the chorus, is the name of a children's game in German-speaking countries. A number of children must cross a playing field and must not be touched by the child representing the black man. The game has its origins in the time of the black plague and was intended to prepare children not to come into contact with sick people.
About ten years ago, there was a discussion in the media about renaming the game because it could be perceived as racist.

There are still people being attacked in Germany just because they are from another country (people already been born in Germany with foreign parents included), asylums for refugees are not wanted etc. The number of people in Germany who are" afraid "of everything which is different is still pretty high. First of all many thanks for your reaction. I really like your Rammstein reactions a lot, they are very intelligent, passionate and funny.
In German 'schwarzer Mann' can mean both, the Bogeyman or literally a black male. I personally think that Rammstein is playing wird the two meanings.
Of course many childeen are disciplined by telling about the Bogeyman but beneath that Germany changed dramatically during the Last 10 years as a result of millions and millions of refugees coming into the country. There are many black people fleeing from Africa to Europe and so Germany changed a lot. In fact its not the same Germany that it used to be.
Then the black man is a symbol for the fear for strangers and change. You have to know that black people were not that common as in the US or UK.

    • @baka_yu9343

I agree with your interpretation that they're playing with the double meaning of Schwarzer Mann. They're eating a candy that essentially used to be called the german "n-word kiss" while watching the, I presume, refugees with darker skin colour. And the fact that smashing the propaganda on TV returns the colour/life to the scene would just reinforce that it's a mixture of the boogeyman the media/politics is trying to sell us with the actual black people cast into the role of villain.

And the biggest wish that I have left is that the young people of the world will have all the luck to live in peace and in love and in solidarity. I would have to say so much about the theme but it doesnt belong here. Here its about Rammstein and about the reactor who always supplies very good ideas. The one thing I want to say is that I feel das that - at least in Germany - a calm, objektive, differentiated and ideology-free discussion about migration and refugees seems to be impossible. And the media Supportd the welcome politics from the beginnuig. I personally feel a kind of fear. Not for the people coming but for the growing pauverty . And I know that this fear is selfish. Because when I lived in a Rich Country Mostr of the other humans did not. Thanks again for your view

    Great Song, great Video!
The Black Man means Death, the black Death (plague)
    Wikipedia says:
The Black Man is based on the mythical Figure of the same Name, who appears in European folklore as an ominous, terrifying Figure, but also as a personification of Death, e.g. in the embodiment of the Black Death. Medievalists and cultural historians trace the Principle of the Game and the centuries-old tradition of the Game back to the Plague and the dances of Death associated with it in the Middle Ages.
The Game, which originated in Central Europe, spread to neighbouring regions and later Worldwide as part of the Emigration flows of the 19th century. Particularly due to the establishment of parts of the German gymnastics movement in the USA, Der schwarze Mann became a component of "physical education" at state institutions. Variations of the Game have survived there to this Day.

Rammstein is known to have so much symbolism in their videos. I haven't seen anyone else point this out, but I noticed the video color scheme is the same as the Nazi flag (Black/White/Red), and Nazism was well known for its fear mongering propaganda. Which is exactly what this song is about.
"Black man" in German is akin to "Boogeyman" in English. But given the classic Americana theme of the video, "Black man" very much can have a double meaning when considering its direct English translation. And I'm positive that was intentional, considering they've railed against American conservativism before.
Only after Till smashes the TV with the lawn mower (the vessel for the fear mongering) does the video transition to natural colors.

Till (who plays a leader of some sort) and the band are spreading fear through the network and the cheerleaders who are supporters of the fearmongers. The shadowy figures (which I interpret as those who are truly behind the generation and control of fear) are shown feeding on that fear near the end of the video. Just an amazing piece of work by Rammstein and their video producers.

As a german there are many influences that shows it goes over german(EU in general) and also US problems. The double meaning behind black man is clearly intended, thats why they eat the chocolat kisses in the end. They play on the fearmongering over refugees that populists allways ranting on. I see these rightwing rise in all of europe, from every crisis and they get more accepted. Fearing the unknown and even irrational fear of strangers. As Till mentioned "they cant stop screaming FIRE in the alleys!". Same as the right wingers allways hoping on every mayor event they can twist to escalate the public view to get votes. The media spread the Red hate and fear they spiting. Cheerleaders as the fans cheering for the leader.
I like to point out that the shouts in the chorus the cheerleaders screaming means "DU!" which is translated to english"YOU!". In context as Till asks"Who fears the boogey man" they answer "You!". Because as much as we deny, we all get attached to these fears and we all fear the boogey man.
The take on modern society is we start to devide from eachother with social media. All groups, the neighbours, the refugees are in circles. We all seperate us in bubbles and fear the outside. Getting paranoid, building walls, weaponize. The weapon part is clearly targeted at the US because they use US Rifles. We have rarely weapons in germany, i only saw Hunters with one and in military. Privat not one has a gun. As a german i see US only as a part more forward in the downspiral, so i see how germany will end as we copy the problems the US allready has. Luckily we have not so onesided News here, that clearly build on the Black/White portraits in Good/evil thinking. They stay more neutral but in these clickbait era, they also fearmongering and exaggerating certain things.
Humans are designed to work in smaller groups and societys, so these fear news influence us because we cant do anything most of the time. Restlessness and anger led to violence and crumbling of our modern society. We have to relearn to be more positive and open to our people, build not destroy what we love.
We see the conservative picture of the neighbours sitting together watching TV, fearing the refugees as they eat and live comfortable. The refugee sees over his phone the peaceful life of these guys and want to reach freedom and security. That picture is there to see the other perspective and also how we move allways in the circles.
The eating boogey mans at end feast on the red "fear" the people produced.

Great reaction! The song is about media fueling xenofobia... The lyrics refer to a song with medieval roots when people believed diseases were brought on by witches, ghosts and so on. Strangers who happened to travel through the region looking a bit different were also sometimes blamed... 🙂

"The song is about media fueling xenofobia"
No, it is not about xenophobia at all. It's about distrust/anxiety/fear, of the individual within a community, against the rest of the community. That's regardless of skin colour. There are 0 racist implications here.

Black men has always been frightening, in the lyrical and common sense. These lyrics could be applied to everything from racism to fear of anything foreign. Well anxiety... But still, so much social commentary directed to the nationalist american.
