You really have to understand the context when this song was written: during the Iraq - USA war. Actually, if you watch the documentary called Rammstein in Amerika - which I highly recommand! - you will see that the song and video was Rammstein's answer to that war. Previously, their video for the song Ich Will was banned in USA because it had the misfortune to be published in september 2001, a time of huge anxiety and paranoia caused by 9/11.
Richard saw the 2nd plane hit the South Tower of WTC. He was living in New York at the time of 9/11.

The widespread image of Santa Claus has been strongly influenced by Coca-Cola's very successful advertising. The first advertising from coca-cola company with the Santa Claus we all know today, was from the year 1931!

You're right with your food chain comparisons, but let's not forget: If a country sa NO to McDonalds, that might also mean they're getting sanctioned by the US/Dollar and degrade into a 3d world country like Venezuela or North Korea. There are radical consequences to saying "No" like poverty or military invasion on a grand scale level.
If we are sanctioning countries because they dont want our McDonalds then MY Government is 100times worse than the Disgust I already have for them.

Rammstein always takes the piss. It is not just America. They are making fun of themselves, their fans (calling the fanclub Lifad (Love is there for everybody) sounds nice but is a song about a peeping Tom), they mock football (which is a religion in Germany), of course they target Germany and everything else. You gotta have the ability to laugh about yourself to be a Rammsteinfan.

The Original Pizza came from Italy there are similar Versions without Tomatosauce in french-german Elsass (English: Alsace) called Flammkuchen (literally translated Flamed Cake) but the American Version of Pizza like from Pizza Hut or Dominos had nothing to do with italian Pizza which has a way thinner dough and less but high quality cheese, less sweet but hearty tomato sauce, high quality toppings, while the bottom of American Pizza is basically thick bread with loads of cheap cheese. In Germany we differentiate between italian and american Pizza because American Pizza has nothing to do with Italian Pizza and is totally american, just like "Burgers" / Hamburger have nothing to do with the original Bouletten-Brötchen from Hamburg, Germany anymore and are totally an American food.

Its not really about export of American products, D. As Schneider said its about export of American values. Not every country wants to have the same traditions and social values as the USA but that is what is happening.
McDonald's made it in Germany, but Walmart didn't. But I can remember that there were people in our town who were against it when the first McDonald's restaurant wanted to open there...

And it's a little difficult for some places not to take what is offered when their own infrastructure and productivity has been wrecked by US machinations. And the actions of many countries in the west I hasten to add (my own country the UK is very guilty of all of this too). Well, to be perfectly honest, it's not that simple that countries will say "No" to expanding American culture on their lands. Because it's not simply a matter of culture but rather influence, big money, and politics. The American government will do a lot to maintain influence in strategic regions because it is profitable. And it can do this in two ways: soft power (business) and heavy power (military). Very often it is a form of sophisticated blackmail: we (America) will give you something that you need the most at this moment (mostly military protection or guarantees) but in exchange, you will give us something that will be worthy of our efforts, like special business deals or so. That's why the USA invests so heavily in the military - if you are the guy with the biggest gun in the room others will have to listen, whether they like it or not.
Problem is There is this thing called Nuclear that MANY countries have, so all of our Guns are the same size. Because with Nuclear it does not matter if you have 100,000 bombs or 5 , you only need 1 to destroy an entire country (with radiation included) Also I dont think our Government really gives a crap if Mcdonalds is in France or Russia or China or not, unless we start thinking crazy like...but wait the more money Mcdonalds makes the more USA makes from the Taxes? lol I dunno....
@@ReactionsbyD I'm perfectly aware that many countries have nukes. But there is a certain paradox connected to the nukes - they work only until the first use. Their main purpose is deterrent potential. If someone uses one it means that the psychological barrier was crossed and others can do this as well. And if that happens it means that all parties lose because no amount of benefits will overbare the havoc. Believe me or not but governments are aware of that and none of them want to lose. And US influences are not only McD. These are high-tech companies, IT, engineering, finances, and so on... But even if we only concentrate on Mcdonald's... This company, like many others (at least in the EU) benefits from a double taxation avoidance agreement, which means that the company gains benefits from foreign markets and foreign labor forces but most of the profits (if not all) are transferred to the US (taxes are paid in the US). If we take into consideration that McD is one of the biggest brands in the world, which builds its revenue on its global recognition and brings a lot of money to the table, I think I can risk a statement that the US Government does care ;) Interesting fact: I believe that in 2015 there was a case in Luxemburg about abusing the double taxation avoidance agreement by McD. Another case is, for example, Amazon that, by using artificial accounting and legal tricks, can avoid paing taxes in the EU completely. And it's only a small part of the bigger picture.

As an aside: I love America and regularly travel to California, Utah, Arizna, New York and Florida. Politically, things are very ambivalent in America at the moment. A lot of great things (including support for Ukraine and Nato). Thank you America for many decades of support for democratic Europe!!!!! I am very afraid of the changes Trump will bring - for the USA (autocracy and for the world).

I'm not entirely sure of the timing, but the band was in the States either during or shortly after the attacks. And they have noticed the change in the population very intensively (it is understandable that this does not leave a nation unscathed!). But everyone has their own background, how and where they grew up and what values they represent.
It was probably difficult for them to understand the extent to which people have changed. They suddenly had the feeling that they were among completely different people, everyone wanted to shoot someone and everyone was very hostile towards strangers. The band described it something like this in the America documentary. I don't want to judge this at all, I wasn't there, it didn't happen to me and it didn't happen in our country either. I don't know how our people would have reacted.
All in all, this must have been a pretty extreme experience for the boys as people and especially as artists! They have a different view of things because of their origins and environment and the path they take and have then processed their experiences in the song and video. Someone who stands outside and looks at things from a distance will always see different things than someone who is inside. Listening to these people can sometimes be helpful. For all of us.
Richard was living there…he said in their In Amerika documentary that a friend of his called and asked if he was okay, and she told him what was going on, so he left his girlfriend’s apartment and walked down the road to get to the corner where he could see the WTC and he saw the second plane hit…and the others were on their way when their flight got rerouted to Canada, I think Montreal. And Flake was so freaked out that he ended up leaving the tour early and going home. (Can’t blame him, honestly.)

Unfortunately, it is not so easy to simply say no when a few powerful and power-hungry people decide over many and then change the environment in such a way that you have no choice but to say yes.
Of course, the American is exaggerating, but that's in the context where the normal for someone personally lies. Americans, of course, don't see their exaggeration, because that's standard for them. For outsiders and other cultures, the standard elsewhere is less that you can good live with. For these people, the standard in America is exaggerated.

I come from East Germany and live and work in Switzerland. Germany is my home country and I stand by it.

The exaggeration issue is what is feels to us.
People, who say 'you can't say anything anymore ' are usually the the kind, that say "ew-stuff". Of course we still have freedom of speech. What's changed is what kind of stuff people are ok to say again in public.

We didn't. There were no chains before american chains, there was no hypercapitalistic culture overwhelming us before... it is not the mac "food" it is the foreign culture demanding a space in our lifes to make money from us. We learned it is here to stay, but I personally still do not like if it feels pressed on me as a system, I don't asked to live in a coast to coast shopping mall like americans prefer.
