It's all in how you drive it. I got 7.3 - 8.1 mpg in semis that most only get 5-6 in. My personal vehicle is EPA rated 26 average and 34 highway, I average 29-31 and get 38-40 highway. And unless you really know what you're doing, turning up the injection pump usually wastes fuel. As you mentioned, idling doesn't help either. Wastes more fuel than most think.

Had a 96 F-250 4x4 power stroke extended cab long box, with 3.55 gears in it, bought it new ordered it with those gears. You couldn't give me a new one with DEF, and the emission garbage.
Empty not pulling anything, on the highway between 65 and 70 mph it got a consistent 21mpg, a little more on 55mph roads in the country. About 15mpg in town.
Put 3 water pumps in it until they changed the design, two sets of glow plugs, about 8 or so glow plug relays. Rebuilt the EOD4 Bruce Jenner at 380,000 miles.
Loved that truck, but I live in snow country and it rusted out, owned it 23 years. Had 495,000 on the dial when I let her go. A friend stuck the engine in his southern power stroke, it's still going.
I wouldn't figure the older idi 7.3 would get better mileage, I know they sure were cantankerous about starting in below 0 weather. Had an 84 idi 6.9 that didn't like winter either.

Hell yeah! What kind of gearing do you have in the back end?... No way I'm going to get that with the 5.13:1 gears I have in my 10k lb truck; it's unhappy driving faster than 55MPH with the AODE transmission.
I need to find which fusible link I popped... I was replacing the ignition block on top of the steering column and the two halves split open, allowing the wire to move inside and short it out.... sparks popped out of the block and then I heard a *POP!* from the engine compartment (at least I think so) and now the block doesn't get power to it at all, so moving the key doesn't do anything. -_-

I forget what year is your pickup? I thought yours is close to the same year as mine if that's the case you talking about the main fuse that powers all the other circuits that one will be by your knees as you're sitting down in the driver seat. Look on the back of the panel it will say which one you're looking for. It will be a bigger one like a 30amp or so.
Okay so in regards to the video my pickup truck is 35 gear I believe in the back end transmission is geared for a 3/4 ton. I have weighed my pickup a few times since the time I've had it after all my weight reduction and my pickup weighs about 5800 lbs as it is a two-wheel drive 5-speed manual!

@@ChaosExplainedYeah, it's a 1991 "F-Super Duty" (which they called F-450 in '92). That location would match with about where I heard it, but I checked the fuse box there and nothing seemed to have blown... I'll look again, as I likely missed it.
LOL, yeah, I went to the CAT scales near me and my rig weighed in just over 10k with my wife sitting in it, so maybe just under 10k without full fuel tanks (which I have dual like yours). The rear Dana 80 gears are the stout 5.13's and can "easily" be changed over to 4.10 with reduction in towing/hauling capacity... but there is apparently a "thin" 3.73 gear that can be installed, but the ring and pinion are $500.

@@ChaosExplained Well, I checked with a fuse tester all the 30, 25, and 20 amp fuses in the fuse box... as well as the two inline fuses near the fuse box and all were good. There has to be a fusible link somewhere between the battery and the fuse box that has blown. Just a pain in the dick to get up in there, as the top of the fender is about at the level of my diaphragm; need a step stool like a little kid to get into that engine bay, hehe.
I may just try to crank it over with the ignition switch on the fender, as it hasn't had that in close to 6 months and that oil needs to be moved around, at the very least.
