This was the season where all of those "Panthers only have 6 fans" memes started.
The season I first became a fan of the Panthers. We had it rough for a while before our newfound success.
…& one of them was a little girl who later become a cult legend with the Vibe Cat ✍️.
Ducks fan here...that LA run to the cup was EPIC. much respect there
As a Kings fan, the 2014 stanley cup playoffs was a roller coaster of emotions. After being down 3 to 0 against the Sharks, I thought it was over. But then I was over the moon when we completed the reverse sweep. Then we faced Anaheim our bitter rivals. I had friends who were also Ducks fans, so it was more about bragging rights at that point than anything else. Game 7 again and I'm feeling electric. Then it's washed away as we go against the hawks, the most difficult team with prime Toews, Kane, Keith, Sharp, and Crawford. At this point I was so superstitious that I had to plan my day out certain ways in hopes we would win 😆. Then we finally beat the hawks, over the moon. Then we marched through the finals and it felt like we were just part of a Hollywood comeback story you see in the movies. My dad and I were screaming after game 5 was over and we couldn't control it. One of the best memories I have
One of the greatest endings in Cup Finals history, in my opinion. Overtime and the goal is scored on home ice when the crowd literally chanting "We want the Cup!" during the rush up the ice before the deciding goal. Iconic.
Those 2014 Kings were a fascinating team. They:
- came back from a 3-0 deficit against San Jose
- came back from a 3-2 deficit against Anaheim
- won game 7 in Chicago, (their third Game 7 road win of those playoffs)
- set a record for playing the maximum 21 games needed to reach final, breaking the record set just a few days earlier by the Rangers who advanced after 2 seven game series' and a 6 game conference final (both teams had to be completely exhausted by that point)
- went 7-0 (!!!) when facing elimination
- won the first 2 games of the Final, despite leading for a grand total of zero seconds in regulation
- all 3 Finals games in Los Angeles went to OT, the last 2 went to double OT, and all 3 were won by the Kings
- set a record for most games played in a championship run with 26 (since tied by the Blues in 2019)
Interestingly, the 2012 Kings run was the MOST dominant cup winning team of the Salary Cap era (Quick was historically great), but the 2014 Kings might have been the LEAST dominant cup winning team, but this run might've been even more impressive!!
Hard to think that Jon Cooper is the only coach from that season to still be coaching for their respective team. It goes to show how great of a head coach he has since he took over for Guy Boucher near the end of the 2012-13 season.
Awesome time to be a Kings Fan, we were on top of the world.
@matthewdaley746 you are unquestionably, a bot lol
@@matthewdaley746 😂 this AI is smart
Kings legit broke every team they played in the playoffs like no other especially since they won 3 straight game 7’s one of the most impressive rounds. I still think about what if the hawks won that game 7 against the Kings
2015 was vindication, fortunately.
Seeing the Martinez cup winner in person would’ve been insane… did anyone here experience that? 😁
Everyone knew the WCF was the real cup.
Really unequivocally was, correct.
Yes, since the " next round" was only 5 games
@@michaelleroy9281Really totally surprising, length.
Kings down to Hawks 3 times in that game 7 before eventually taking the only lead in OT and moving on to cup final. That series was a true war.
Kings were victorious, unquestionably.
As a Sharks fan, I don’t remember the 2014 playoffs ever happening.
As shocking as that upset was, (by definition), the fact it was the Sharks muted it somewhat, I was surprised, but, really, truly, not by very much, simple as that.
As a Kings fan, I remember it very well😂
@domb45 Absolutely, unpredictable, yet, not.
Those 2012-2014 kings were so deep and unstoppable. The comeback vs the sharks was so impressive. 2012 the absolutely slaughtered everyone in the playoffs and 2014 were epic as well. I’ll never forget Martinez OT goal in the cup final, one of the loudest moments in hockey.
It's the Sharks, unfortunately.
I remember the LA CHI match up very well. They were the best teams that year and who ever won, I knew would win the cup. That game 7 OT crushed my soul. What a time it was with the King Hawks rivalry.
There's always 2015, and, the Kings were better, they, seriously, were on a mission, and there was truly nothing that was going to stop them, period.
My job caused me to relocate to Ohio near the end of that season, so I didn't get to go to the Kings' Cup run. When they got to the 3rd round against Chicago I said, "screw it, I'm going to a game." So I bought a ticket and drove to Chicago for Gm.5. That was the game where Michal Handzus broke our hearts in double OT. But the Kings prevailed in the series.
I remembered this season when Tortorella got the 15 day suspension from the NHL for going into the Calgary Flames Locker room and giving the flames players and their coach hell after the Line brawl from the Canucks and Flames right when the puck dropped that started the game.
ALEC MARTINEZ FUCK YEAH!
#JazzHands!!!!!
Yes, Kings won 1st 3 series that went 7 games, and they won all of those game 7s ON THE ROAD!
2014 was the first, and to date, only time the Kings and Ducks have met in the playoffs. The Ducks even had a 3-2 series lead when the Kings made their comeback to win games 6 and 7.
I remember leaving Dodger Stadium with Ducks fans chirping after the 3-0 shutout. We got the last laugh
By the time THG read Roy’s name as the coach of the Avs, he had already pulled the goalie
No Tampa and New York trade news to be seen which was a big thing
that was a great time of hockey in so cal! I remember hearing fans call it death valley...going from playing the Ducks to the Kings and vice versa
For me as an LA fan, the 2014 run felt like sequel with the stakes being higher… going from being down 3-0 in the opening round to the fact they won 3 game 7’s… though the one against the Ducks was a clinic… into the Chicago series and then all the overtime wins in the finals. My heart 10 years later is still recovering 😂.
Sharks totally gagged, unquestionably.
@@matthewdaley746 they learned their lesson a couple years later though… led by the Kings backup goalie
Go Kings Go! 👑🏒💪🏼 🏆🏆
The 2014 SCF is the last playoff series LA won, 0-5 in the decade since
Quality over quantity, unquestionably.
Ah my first Stanley Cup Final experience. That was such a rush. We traded captains with Tampa Bay (which would haunt us in a big way). It looked like we were down and out against the Penguins but a Mothers Day goal from St. Louis after his mother passed away kicked started this comeback and an unbelievable run.
I was at Game 4 against the Canadiens when once again, St. Louis played the hero and scored the game winner. Loudest playoff game I've ever attended. It really felt like destiny was on our side. Sadly it wasn't. Those SCF losses will haunt me because the Rangers had the lead in almost all those games but just couldn't get it done.
It was still a fantastic run from my Rangers. One of my favorite times as a fan.
Go Kings Go!
Have to admire that Kings team.
That one win for Detroit against Boston in the first round was because of Datsyuk with a ridiculous center ice play where he outstretched his stick behind him with one hand to drag the puck to him through three, THREE Bruins before sniping it past Rask.
The 2013-2014 New York Rangers team was my favorite team that didn’t win the Cup. They had a lunch pail mentality. Their character is what got them through ridiculous bevy of Game 7s till they ran out of gas and fell to the LA Kings. What is very interesting statistic of the Stanley Cup Finals is the fact, the NY Rangers had the lead going into the 3rd period of every game.
As a rangers fan, I was definitely heartbroken by this loss. Felt bad for Lundqvist losing. The Kings were the type of team that just wore you out with their heavy forechecking physical system. There was no out in them. Kudos to them but you can tell that the rangers were too tired, bottled up offensively and not able to make the plays they needed to in order to win 👍🏾
Up to this point, the 2014 Stadium game at Soldier Field is the Blackhawks only win in an outdoor game. Hopefully that changes this year!
Forgot to include the first ever Stadium Series game between the Ducks and Kings. Got great memories of that game as a Ducks fan! Shame what happens in May though...
2007 provided consolation, unquestionably.
Habs Back in Conference final that made me happy as a Fan and LA Pulls off the Reverse Sweep really Impressed me that's how I knew they would win the Stanley Cup again by Alec Martinez OT Winner
The 2014 playoffs was the final game for Teemu… I was at that game 7 where the Kings just schooled the Ducks. So many pissed off ANA fans who didn’t stay to salute Teemu while the Kings on the ice did.
Also oh hey it's the Nathan McKinnon-Sasha Barkov-Jusse Saros draft season
That final...if it wasnt for the goalie killer Chris Kreider, we would have a Habs vs Kings rematch with peak Subban, Price and Paciorretty...but he had to go skate first on his knees by "accident", even after it was the 3rd goalie he did it. Probably the second best chance for Price to win it...what a waste. I still hate Kreider for it !
Thanks Ken for kicking the can.
We need another freeway faceoff in the playo
I was mad for years about my Sharks and it was the peak of my LA hate. Now it's still bad memories but since since the Golden Cheaters are in the league, it's easier to accept the Kings victory because it was a fair one. I'm not hating you anymore Kings fans ! :p
new jersey didnt get to the playoffs it was rangers who beat flyers in 7 games😁
That's where the famous Anaheim Chant "Howreyanow? Goodnyou?" came from.
Ron Rolston started the season as Buffalo's head coach, then was replaced by the return of Ted Nolan.
Hasek's betrayal absolutely, unforgivable.
Was there really no other good team news in the league besides just Dallas, Boston, and Vancouver?
Kings, were, possibly, adequate.
The Pens kept laying eggs in the playoffs.
@@hmich176Post-2017, it, returns, unfortunately.
The Stars finally made it back to the postseason for the first time since 2008 led by Captain Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin. Unfortunately, they weren't ready to beat a team like the Ducks yet.
Kreider is the main reason why Price will never play another NHL game. Sigh!
You're mistaken. For some reason the NHL decided to cancel the playoffs after the third game of the first round for some reason. Sure, I was at game 4 between LA and San Jose, but that game and the rest of the playoffs definitely didn't happen.
Nice try, the Sharks, merely, did what they do best, turn into remoras, I'd explain it better, but, this is a family site, and, totally done.
This year was a difficult one as a Rangers fan; however, looking back on it I wonder if beating the Rangers led to the Kings becoming cursed somehow. They haven't won a playoff round since (doesn't help they keep running into Edmonton of course) and they still remain the most recent champion to miss the playoffs entirely the year after.
It's complicated, those Playoffs convinced the Kings they could flip a switch, they learned the hard way that it just isn't true, fortunately, unlike the Sharks, they didn't throw good money after bad, and, made the necessary changes when the time came.
This was the season I began to accept that the red wings were going to start sucking soon.
Too bad Nicklas Lidstrom didn't come back for the previous year, I, seriously, expected him to.
From the time the LA Kings came into the league there was talk, "Oh boy, if we could just get an LA vs. NY Rangers final, it will be a big deal for the league. Everyone will sit up and take notice". Well, they finally got it this year and it wasn't a big deal. Nobody gave a gosh darn, even in NY. Compared to 1994, you hardly even knew the Rangers were in the finals. The series just came & went.
It was the polar opposite of how 1994 went, the Rangers gave away, Game One, easily took the next three Games, and, the local papers collectively declared the, Final, over, the Rangers were just good enough, unfortunately, a collection of, ill-advised, depth trades, and, the loss of their coach, turned their possible, Dynasty, into a ruinous, one-off, simple as that.
@@matthewdaley746 The Rangers have been in the finals 4 times since I been watching hockey. It was a big deal in 94, a pretty big deal in 1979. I remember it being a big deal in 1972, but maybe I remember wrong because I went back and looked in the Daily News archive and the playoff run took a definite back seat to the baseball strike and the last game just got a couple of half page stories and 2014 you only knew they were in the finals if you were a hockey fan.
@RRaquello Everybody expected the Knicks to beat the Rockets, as we all know, that, sadly, didn't, occur, nor, in 1999, really, fifty-one, years, and, counting.
dont remember this season either.
so again its all news to me.
looks like guhlie went to the hospital.should be back in time
gohabsgo
Those playoffs never happened. Figment of the imagination.
Unfortunately, the, Sharks', nightmare.
For me the WCF was a disappointment, so much for the Blackhawks chance for 2 Cups in a row
Three, Cups, in six years, is the closest anybody will ever come to a, Dynasty, from this point forward, period.
I was this Close 👌
This Close to See my Chicago Blackhawks vs My New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Final
But those KINGS.....
2015 squared things, unquestionably.
@matthewdaley746
Was that Close a Year Later
But Damn Lightning
@timbartschwolfman Blackhawks absolutely overwhelming, unquestionably.
WHen was the last time a NY and a CHI team played for a championship. Bears vs. Giants in 1963?
@RRaquello Definitely really perfect, question.
The year Vancouver officially became a joke.
