I live in Austria and in my country, we have a union of unions. They are all working together and bind their ressources when negotiating working conditions and payment. They even represent you in legal issues when you don't have ressources for a lawyer, they support public health care systems, protect your rights as a tenant if you pay rent... They basically work for the wellbeing of the people. I remember working on those stadiums, that was hard work. We only lost 6 guys that month; we didn't even have time off to attend their funerals. Dios los bendiga.

At least the CEO got to buy his 82nd investment property.
This is too real. Do one for the Qatar world cup. Wait, all their workers are dead.

This is the REALEST thing I have ever seen about construction. Pretty much my experience during my short lived construction career. Dont forget not having any work during winter.

I love how genuinely defeated he looks, excellent work
My favorite Onion moments are when they commentate on real life problems. Don’t get me wrong, I love the silly ones, but these I feel are when the team’s creative muscles really flex
Imagine being that migrant worker that the Onion had on hand just to sit there and watch Rodrigo finish his work after all those days.

Rodrigo's wage: $1700

Total cost: $2000000 in taxpayer money
im in a union now, and this last contract had us working 10-11 hour days mon-sun.. no breaks, just 30 min lunch. . . im pretty sure this is why unions were made, to avoid 80 hour work weeks and nearly life threatening conditions . .
I'm definitely joining a union if I ever go construction. Doing landscaping right now.
The gov doesn't give a flying shit about us, they are all in the pockets of criminals, and we don't really have a democratic system, but the unions managed to give us pretty good lives
This is undoubtedly the most cynical piece of comedy I've ever seen in my life
It's only cynical if it's based on theories, hypothesis, or guesses. This is based on real records. So it's more "realistic" than cynical
This is genuinely what happens.
As a brazilian, just leaving a side note: 99% of all workers that made stadiums in Rio actually where from Bahia, therefore no São Paulo people were hurt.
actually, if 1% of the people where not from Bahia, then some of those where probably from São Paulo, thus most likely a few people from São Paulo were hurt.
Am I the only one who doesn't think the exact origin of the people who were hurt should be the key decider in whether or not to care?

Seriously this.
Every history book: Back then in those dark times, slavery was common. Unlike today, where everybody has the same rights.
Me: 🤔
Yeah, we've come a long way. Nowadays _everyone_ gets to be a slave, regardless of color!
Zebo12345 Fuck! You said it first!
There are actually more slaves in the world now than at the height of the Atlantic slave trade. Granted the word population is also a lot bigger so it's a smaller proportion, but I wish schools wouldn't act as if slavery was over.
Only acknowledge flaws in past tense.

The only unrealistic part of this is seeing the worker slow down or show weakness no matter how messed up his body gets. The other workers tear you apart if they see that on site.

According to capitalism theory, you will succeed if you work hard enough. This man didn't succeed, therefore he is lazy.
Are you dumb or something? People who work hard are not guaranteed success just like you aren't guaranteed anything in life but those that work hard will have a much higher chance of succeeding. You also have to pick you work. If you work hard in manual labor you will never get anywhere. Maybe use logic once in a while it will keep you from looking stupid.
Based God, are you saying that nobody should ever work in manual labor since it can't get anywhere? Man, that's brilliant I can't wait to see what that society looks like.
+Marshymallow no dummy what I'm saying is that if you enter into a menial construction job don't be surprised when your hard work isn't rewarded with a big sum of money.

I normally laugh a lot at Onion videos, but there wasn't much that was funny about this one since it's just 100% accurate to the way things actually are.
Felt more like a mock than satire
This type of work is true. I’m from Houston and we have to work 24/7 in the construction site. The ppl who are in charge sleep around 2hrs and it’s no lie that how my boss works. We start work at 2am and finish around 4pm then the next crew works from 5pm-10pm my boss stay for all of those shift and after work he makes sure everything is prepared for the next crew. Body builders won’t stand a chance. There is a difference between working hard and training hard. Just because you have big muscles doesn’t mean you are strong.
That was absolutely brilliant, the part at the end made me LOL.
Makes you think though, who the real athletes are...
too true.
you know those 'natural bodybuilders' ?
they can't hold a candle to a regular third world country laborer
@@gendoruwo6322 A regular third world country laborer will probably not get enought food and will also get muscle damage from doing the same gestures for too long without a break. Both things are not a problem for a bodybuilder, so yeah, that person will actually ''hold a candle''.
Another case of Onion's video coming true.
i love how often the satire of the onion is not actually satire of the subject matter, but instead satire of how the news covers the subject matter. in this case: “what if they were honest?” this has been a more consistent formula for comedy in the onion than any other formula.
I love how Rodrigo looks very excited and doesn't look like he was forced to do this.
If you do the math, Rodrigo made less than $3.00/h. That is… if the Onion decides to pay him.
Overpaid. He should be paid less
This is true as hell. I'm a landscaper which is hard enough work but then I get to watch them construction guys go to work every day and I could not imagine their toughness
This really broke my heart. It’s not new knowledge but damn, how little people think of the people who do hard labor.
They forgot to simulate the foreman doing nothing but yelling and threatening rodriguez while he reduces material and cuts safety specifications to make up for it
I don't get how The Onion makes so much lazy crap, and then makes something great like this
They must have multiple writers with different levels of skills and work ethics.
The lazy videos help fuel them for the big ones imnotserious
