@@NYC_Goody No, that's for real. I mean there is some variation depending on the source and methodology. Some might have food deliverers ranked a bit lower, some higher. Ofc for both the level of danger depends greatly on the kinds of areas they serve.
The overall point is, police officer does not even come close to being the most dangerous job. It is not even in the top 10. Instead it is consistently outranked by job fields like fishing, logging, farming, construction, mining, mechanic/tech repair, steel work or trucking.
Yet none of them get anything close to the reverence and protections cops get.

As a cop your facing danger in a potential violent sense. When you're mining or fishing you don't typically think you're going to come across a potentially violent person. Why yes, I do support defunding the police and I'd argue doing anything less would actually be the most horrible idea. You know, the plan is not for police budgets to just get cut but also for that money to be diverted towards different public causes and civil services that are more suited to deal with stuff the police is usually called for, but for which they are not or very badly prepared to deal with. Say for example mental health crises, drug addiction or homelessness.
Generally police in your country mostly act as a repressive bandaid for more underlying socioeconomic issues, namely poverty and lack of opportunity which are the greatest predictors for violent crime down the line. Yet instead of getting to the root of the problem, money is pumped into shit like military equipment and warrior training for cops..
Then there is all the non-violent crime like drug use which gets cracked down on, which besides all the unnecessary and counterproductive suffering it causes, also wastes a ton of policing, judicial and carceral resources (which is certainly no accident in a prison complex that is deeply tied up with private interests, but that is a whole other story onto itself). I mean, the entire war on drugs is a blunder of unfathomable scale, not just morally but also fiscally.
Curiosly enough, the crime rate has been dropping steadily for decades, yet police budgets have only been increasing (since the late 70s they tripled on average). And it is not the increased budget that is responsible for this, but rather it is improved socioeconomic conditions. It turns out that hypervigilant policing and an extra-punitive prison system are terrible ways to deter crime. Instead it is rehabilitation, preventative care and generally better living standards that really help.
I'd say, try to rethink the whole civil fabric of America more radically. Other countries that are less productive still manage to get way better outcomes regarding crime and incarceration with way smaller police and prison budgets. Surely America can do better as well.
