  • When you think about great opening scenes, it is very unlikely that you'd consider the opening scene from a 45 minutes long anime. But I'm here to tell you that 'The Garden of Words' by Makoto Shinkai has one of the best opening scenes that I have ever seen. And in this video essay, I'm gonna explain why The Garden of Words has the 'perfect' opening scene...
0:00 The opening scene of 'The Garden of Words'
    0:34 Setting the scene
    4:19 Why is it perfect?
11:14 How the opening scene connects to the ending
So, generally, crafting an opening scene is sort of an art in and of itself. Sometimes movies start with a hook, like the mystery in 'The Prestige' or it puts you right in the middle of an action sequence, like in 'Skyfall'. But ever so often, you get a movie like 'The Garden of Words' that simply does none of this. It opens like a poem about someone's everyday life. It's artistically brilliant, probably one of the best looking movies that I have ever watched, and on top of this, it makes you connect with the overall emotion of the movie.
The main motifs of the movie are introuduced in the opening scene and you only realize how symbolic the movie is from the start to the finish at the very ending. For a movie that is deeply philosophical, it is the opening scene that opens the window into 'The Garden of Words', by setting up these motifs that allows us to follow along the story. And in my eyes, I have never seen an opening scene so visually striking, and yet symbolically meaningful.

I watched The Lion King as a kid, but rewatching it again as an adult made me appreciate it sooo much more. I can't imagine what Circle of Life, for the first time, must have been like theaters. It masterfully sets the stage for the rest of the movie.

damn the scenery looks realistic .. the only break is the style itself, look slightly blurry at your screen and all the scenery could be in a real video

It looks like a very beautiful movie and a great romantic story. I'm sure many people will like it.
It's also a favorite among anime fans with a foot fetish but I'm sure none of you have that, right...?
Who am I kidding a number of the movie's fans do.
