- When I heard that Makoto Shinkai was making a new film, I kinda had a feeling that it was gonna be similar to films like 'Your Name' and 'Weathering with You'. And after watching Suzume, I can't lie, it was business as usual.
But, even when Makto Shinkai's movies feels repetitive, there's something about them that's satisfying...and beautiful. In this video essay, I wanna talk about why Makoto Shinkai makes similar movies, and why even when the anime is reeally predictable...it can still be incredibly good!

Predictable storyline isn't a problem (unless it's a suspense thriller) if other aspects of the film has things to offer. Story is a crucial element but it's not the only thing I look for in a film. For Shinkai's movies, visuals are definitely one of those things.
Yes, very well said! A movie can be predictable, but still very good...
I really like the idea that all of Shinkai's films are chapters in the same book especially because he puts characters from his previous work in his new films as easter eggs.
Yes, it makes the world feel real!
i understand why people love his movies, but i personally prefer ghibli because of how they picture the subject of love. i'm just tired of romantic love movies and that's why i love ghibli's movies, they are often about platonic love, parent's love to their child, family love, friends love, siblings love, nature love, self love. even if there are romantic relationship, they don't take much screentime and it's still perfect. like, we don't see Kiki and Tombo starting to date, but we can assume that happened and we still know they would be a great couple and we are happy for them. no romantic scenes needed.
Yeah that's true. But for me, Shinkai's portrayal of romance is not too mainstream. I feel like there are consequences to people falling in love. And the aesthetics alone is so different. It's like every frame is a painting. But in terms of storytelling, yes, of course there's room for improving!
@@wonderescence yes, i think
Weathering with you is the first anime movie that I watched in a movie theatre , so it has a special spot in my heart ❤️❤️
That's awesome! Shinkai movies in a movie theatre would be so soo good!
Didn't realize apocalypse/natural disaster was a common theme in his films. Always makes for an interesting adventure!
I think since 2011! The thing I really love about his movies is how he mixes a bunch of unique themes into a simple visual story.
How did you end up in my feed?
