    I drive mine with 41/2 watts rms and have for years. I deadkey 110 watts swing to 150. Yes I have mosfet final. I've talked skip to California and I'm in Milwaukee. Thus us in a mobile with a K40 Plus trucker antenna. Without skip I get about 28 miles mobile to a basestation. 21 miles mobile to mobile. My radio has been tuned correctly and SWR IS 1.15. GREAT VIDEO.

    In the 90's I was a big Yaesu fan and I had that same YS-60 meter - wish I'd kept it but I sold it for some unknown reason. Having those red AVG and PEP led indicators made it easy to see which mode it was in. I now have a Diamond SX-200 and it's a good meter but can be difficult seeing which mode it's in because the AVG/PEP selection is just a simple in/out button. Your YS-60 looks like it has LED backlighting.

    2Bit+ A -Cheap- (value) pyramid psv-300 30 amp switching supply with a Tsunami 10 farad competition capacitor sitting on top(stole it outta my truck lol). Gives my value power supply brute storage. And a handy little digital volt meter. The fan hasn't even turned on on my power supply running my RM203p. Love it. On Half Watt dead key swinging ten, I can talk all day on 1.0:1 antenna match and you can barely tell it's even luke warm LOL. Yet it works out in SSB land trust me. Great little amp running ultraflex TimesMicrowave 400 series straight into an RM 27/586 low pass filter. Yep.

    Funny hearing all the DX on his radio but this video is from 2015 when the cycle was still high. Four years later (2019) we're pretty much at the bottom of the cycle and the 10-11-12 meter bands are DEAD. Local traffic is about the only activity until the cycle begins to increase again. I hate it when it bottoms out like this because if you don't have any local people on the air then you can just put your radio away until things improve :>\

    So I just ordered one of these amps. I popped open my President Washington to prep it for the amp. I turned down my AM power to 1 watt on the avg scale. Now my radio doesn’t seem to swing more than a 1-1.5 watts on am. Will that be enough? I read on another page guys were setting a dead key to 2 and swinging to 25. But I’m not sure if that was pep. Thanks for taking a minute to help!

    • @papaklitts
      @papaklitts  5 лет назад +2

      I would wait and see what it does with the radio itself. General rule of thumb is 1/4th dead key of potential swing. These amps at best are 80 to 100 watts AM. Which is plenty in the big scope of things. So if the amp and radio seem to do about 80 PEP watts max, set the dead key with the amp on at 20. Dead key 20 swinging to 80. If the amp seems to do 100 then try to get close to 25 watt dead key. Perfect case scenario would be to have it all set up with a scope and see where they play together the best. Just be aware that anyone close to you will hear the bleed over with the amp on. Hope this helps.

    These are NOT bad amplifiers at all. Run them with 2 to 3 watts on am and about 12 to 15 on SSB and it'll last a long time.. These guys try to run them with dual final radios and blow them up. They are made for your garden variety standard output CB radios..

      how do you rate it against the older uniden boarded radios from the seventies and eighties? do you think ranger radios as bad as people make out or is it just a myth? the reason I'm asking is I've been running a superstar 3900 since 2007 with the ranger EPT360014B chassis and I think it's a great little radio but the only downside was the frequency stability on ssb was not as good as a uniden but have since had the radio sent over to a guy in Austria (Gerhard maurer) who modified the radio and it's now rock solid on ssb.

      I agree. Mine does a little over 100w with a 25w DK at 2.5w from the radio. But SSB is also 100w. Not even close to the 200w claim from RM. In all it’s a nice little inexpensive amp if not overdriven.

      @@rallypoint1 In watching this video again it's even worse than I thought. Look at the power range switch on the Yaesu watt meter. Looks like the 20 watt position But he is reading the 200 watt scale. What I am seeing is about 10 watts output AM or SSB on that meter

    • @rallypoint1

      Jersey John I went back after you and checked as well. I froze the shot of the Yaesu and it seems as if it is on the 200w scale. If you look at the function and power right next to it they are up. Basically against the chassis. So if it was the 20w scale it would be further down. I think it’s the angle. Good eye!!

    • @papaklitts
      @papaklitts  4 года назад +1

      All amps with SSB switching usually have a small delay. The 200p has a SSB delay built in. It sounds like your older one might have a longer delay or you might have been using the radio in SSB and the amp in AM mode. All amps will act a little different according to how they are built. And I’m not familiar with that antenna. Just see what the power rating is of the antenna and try not to exceed that amount.

      Four watts should be ok for the 200P. It uses a bipolar transistor (pill). If you have a KL203 (or larger) MOSFET amp, 4 watts is almost too hot... I'd recommend detuning the radio to about 2.0 -2.5 watts out. The RM MOSFET amps don't like over-drive conditions. Aside from non-linearity, the amp might just give you a ghost.
