Testing a Uniden 980 SSB with a RM Italy KL 203

  • I'd say the modulation is set to high, but it never made any buzzing sound in my Jeep with the 6 foot skip shooter antenna. I'm guessing just some strange harmonics going on while hooked up to bench power and dummy load. I've tested many amps that would run perfect in the mobile, but showed strange operation while on SSB on the bench, while others ran perfect. Not really sure.

The reason you're hearing that buzzing is the fact that you are overdriving that amp. On AM the amp requires a 1w carrier to give it the 30w carrier that is needed when the amp is on. From the amount of swing, appears as if the modulation potentiometer is turned up beyond 100% modulation as well, and will cause distortion. Just make sure that you aren't dead keying over 30w with power on, and the amp will run cool for many years to come.

On the 980 SSB you'll probably want somewhere around 1-2 watts and you'll want to turn the modulation up to compensate for lowering the dead key. Turn up the modulation until it sounds good and see how hot the amp gets. If it only gets warm then you'll be fine. If it's heating up quickly then I'd back off the desk key about 1/4 watt at a time. You'll find the happy spot where the amp doesn't get too hot and the over the air quality sounds good. You are overdriving your amp, that is why it is buzzing. You will be lucky to keep it very long using it like that. Your audio will also sound crap with this particular amp above 5 watts input. I know it says up to 10 watts input in the instructions, but realistically these amps are really only designed to do about 100 watts or so on AM/FM and SSB. To get the best out of this amp, limit the power to 5 watts max. These amps really are the cheapest of the cheap and they should be treated as such. I’m really surprised that you do not seem to be using a low pass filter with this amp either, considering the level of spurious emissions it produces which is quite shocking if you could see it on a spectrum analyser. That’s why ham radio amplifiers cost many thousands of dollars more, because they use the best quality components and have the correct filtering in place to prevent spurious emissions from becoming a problem. Anyway I hope this helps. 🙂
