- Couldn't I Just Tell You from Something/Anything?
LYRICS:
Keep your head and everything will be cool
You didn't have to make me feel like a fool
When I tried to say I feel the way that I do
I want to talk with you
And make it loud and clear
Though you don't care to hear
But couldn't I just tell you the way I feel?
I can't keep it bottled up inside
And could we pretend that it's no big deal
And there's really nothing left to hide?
Something sure doesn't seem right to me
When you can turn your back whenever you please
And you stroll away and calmly bid me adieu
Why can't I talk with you
And put it in your ear
Though you don't care to hear
But couldn't I just tell you the way I feel?
I can't keep it bottled up inside
And could we pretend that it's no big deal
And there's really nothing left to hide?
(Hear me out, ooh) Why don't you lend me an ear
(Hear me out, ooh) You got no reason to fear
(Hear me out, ooh) I'll make it perfectly clear
I love you
I don't come whining with my heart on my sleeve
I'm not a coward, if that's what you believe
And I'm not afraid but not ashamed if it's true
I got to talk with you
And then I'll make it clear
Make it clear
Make it clear
Couldn't I just tell you the way I feel
I can't keep it bottled up inside
And could we pretend that it's no big deal
And there's really nothing left to hide

I bought this album in 1973 when I was 13. And for the next 2 years I would save enough allowance and go buy another Todd Rundgren album. A Wizard A True Star, Todd, and Utopia. I called it my 2 year Todd infusion. None of the last 3 albums ever got radio time, I didn’t care. I was Todd obsessed! Then my boyfriend in 75 turned me on to Black Sabbath, I joined a record club and Todd and I grew apart. I just listened to all four albums the other night. Todd you are a badass! Thank you for helping create who I became!
You had a boyfriend at 15? Sounds like the name of the last song on this album describes you.
wow, beauty, so powerful.
The whole album is a classic!
One of the great opening riffs in rock history
One of the greatest songs in rock history
maybe THE BEST OPENING OF ALL TIME I BELIEVE.nice guitar solo too! great love song ❤️❤️,Brad in rochester, minnesota!
This is my personal favorite Rundgren song!
Same
Mine too!👌
Mine too!
Cheap Trick wishes...
Mine too!
One of the great power-pop songs of all time. I still love listening to this. Thanks, Todd!
"A bouquet of ear-catching melodies". A masterpiece indeed.
Mother of God. Seems to be a consistent theme in Egypt....the sun God and his sister wife. Maybe not so funny being a Rosicrusian initiate he later became. Then back to fuck rock. And chicken wing ballads.. will the real Todd please stand up phssy boy.
A true musical genius!!
Hell of an album,HELL of an album.
About my favorite.
I always thought this was an incredible track, Todd’s best.
God that guitar riff at the end is mind bending!
It's killer
We had this dumb little FM converter in the car way back when; and when I heard this, the connection was more than instantaneous. When I bought Something/Anything a few years later, it's cemented that connection. Even though Todd has taken different directions, this record had made him a part of my life.
"We're all freedom fighters, so don't you forget...!" 🎶
This sounds like a Big Star song.
Wow! Someone knows about Big Star!! ❤
I do indeed. I met Jody Stephens at Ardent Studios just last week. He’s the nicest guy, and the only remaining original.
@melodymakermark Thank ya for the reply.
Jody is a really nice guy. Do you know if Those Pretty Wrongs are recording something new @ Ardent?
Very familiar with Ardent, btw.
I'd heard Jody was helping run the studio. Thrilled Ardent is still cranking out stellar recordings.
Old original Memphian here. Now happily retired in the Ozarks and a diehard TR fan since '72. Around the time Big Star was becoming a big star with that soulful voice of Alex Chilton.
@stephaniemorphis4477, not sure what Jody has going on. I have no connection to Ardent, I just happened to be driving down Madison to grab lunch at Molly’s la Casita and looked over and there was Jody messing with the automatic gate out front. He’s a pretty recognizable guy. I just turned in and introduced myself and we talked a few minutes. He did mention a run of shows coming up with Mike Mills and Jon Auer et al, but these shows are Big Star related.
I saw Todd Rundgren at Ellis Norrh Hall back in ‘77 on Utopia’s RA tour. Only time I ever saw Todd.
@melodymakermark Oh, sweet re: Big Star related shows. I'll have to look into it. Curious since he's the only surviving member.
I'm embarrassed to admit how many times I've seen Todd.
He's got a show there in Oct., but not sure I'll make this one.
Masterpiece.
Beautiful, just beautiful. We used to get to hear this song on the radio back in the day, but no longer. I wonder why.
I love it!! Reminds me a bit of XTC!
Todd produced one of XTC's later albums. He and Andy battled like hell.
Never heard this song until today, was reading an interview about Shaun Cassidy and he said he loved this song and that's why he had Todd produce his record in 1980
Same here! I never owned the album but Hello it’s Me has always been my favorite. But this song is awesome as well.
I used to LOVE it ages ago.
From the Wikipedia page on Todd: Although lesser known, "Couldn't I Just Tell You" (1972) was influential to many artists in the power pop genre
If you like this you'll love the LIVE version from BACK TO THE BARS double record. A staple in any Rundgren fans collection.
I hope you had the time to listen to the rest of the album. It's awesome and my favorite TR album! I love how he talks to the listeners and left in silly things that would normally end up be on the studio floor. He was in about 22 when he made this album, playing just about all the instruments. Just amazing.
Bought this album when it came out still great today todd rungren great live and still turning out great albums legend 🙌
Power pop! This would be on any of list of that sub-genre’s best songs.
Best song he ever did, that's saying a lot...
Todd introduces us to the now-enduring concept of power pop.
wrong. it was here before this record. Don't be fanboy ignorant.
i think the Who might have something to say about that statement. Pete Townshend coined the term "power pop" in 1967.
Badfinger too
I’ve read that this is considered the best DIY power pop song ever cut on vinyl.
Hey man, you gotta make that call for yourself.
DIY? Because he played the instruments? This has nothing to do with doing it yourself. This was made in three studios in three different cities/towns and while it may not have been made by a truly giant record label of the day, Bearsville had money and certainly paid for Rundgren to make the record. But yes, it's a catchy song.
Shoes (the band) have some pretty stunning DIY bangers

at 2:07 in, the most tasteful overdubbed triple guitar solo in the history of recorded rock and roll. I can listen to it over and over. Never gets stale.
Me too. Great rock song.
The best power pop song ever recorded and written
I read somewhere that the coda on "Guiding Light" by Television had 24 guitar tracks and the song was nearly left off the album...it's always been my favorite. One of the few Richard Lloyd songs Television recorded...ruclips.net/video/OVxfPylCGhw/видео.html
That coda at ruclips.net/video/OVxfPylCGhw/видео.html is amazing
That said, this song blows my mind. The fact that TR played all the parts...absolutely insane.
Raw Power. Raw Vocal. Great stuff.
So I came here by way of I saw the Light, which I heard in Very Murray Christmas. And I had heard Hello it's Me on the radio. I need to buy this album. This song is incredible
mother of god
Never tired of him. Or this song. ❤️
Same here. Over 50 years now.
Just tremendous sound. I bought this on vinyl when released, it's a favorite album that's really held up.
Damm,love that $ong!!!
One of Todd's best.
Going to see him for the 6th time in April
Fazendo 45 anos que curti esse álbum
:'PARABENS RROOCCCKKKKKZ!!
Proto-Power Pop Perfection.
i think the Who might have something to say about that statement. Pete Townshend coined the term "power pop" in 1967.
Really clean remaster. Thanks for posting.
Holy Mother of Boston!
Never heard this on the radio, sad. Great pop song.
I was just thinking that. Yes.. incredibly sad.
I did...50 years ago it was an fm classic back in the day.
74 summer I heard it on Atlanta FM rock stations
Was 14 and already had the album thanks to my sis 🖤
RIP Leah
Música ótima, adoro o Todd ❣️😚
Thank you for sharing, haven't dug out my vinyl of this in years
2023 and I'm JUST hearing this. Thank the saints for the Internet.
Such a solid song. Can hear where the lemon twigs pull inspiration from. Top Marks Todd
song says it all. always think of Janice with this one. always & forever.
Meine Fresse...
das ist Todd...
Absolute Spitze!
POWER POP PUNK early and paramount shot! TODD IS GOD
Only me and you Renan...what a shame...I wish I could share Todd with this empty culture
We just have to keep sharing to social media, hoping someone will listen.
This was Cheap Trick before Cheap Trick. Incredible song.
This one should have made the radio along with I Saw The Light and Hello It's me.
It Did
気持ちいい歌〜センスあるの塊~
I thought I’d heard every song Boston ever released. First time hearing them do this one.
Boston??
@@stephaniemorphis4477 Okay, so I kid. But the vocals do sound a bit like Brad Drlp. The harmonizing also sounds like Boston.
Todd Rundgren created power pop with this infectious classic in fact something anything was so ahead of its time and Todd was and still is an innovative genius
Well Id say The Who did with roots from The Beatles. Badfinger too.
The Raspberries a few months before.
@@Blkojo that's a good one
i think the Who might have something to say about that statement. Pete Townshend coined the term "power pop" in 1967.
@@CaptainSensibleIII you might be right and you have a very good point
Pure power pop genius!
There was, maybe still is, some footage on RUclips of Todd performing this on the Mike Douglas Show in 1978.
Would love to see it.
Power pop at its finest
Notice how the songs speeds up as soon as the drums come in. And then it slows down again at 0:44. Stuff like that is what stops a song from becoming a hit. People may not know the reason. They can just instinctively feel something is "off."
Plenty of hit songs suffer from the same [non-]issue
@@darrenringer9811 Such as...?
It was deliberate? On the second side (anything) Todd explains the game "sounds of the studio" , the types of mistakes that are common and then encourages the listeners to find as many of them as they can. Pure genius. I mean, he followed up with the faithful record, which more than proved he is capable of perfection. The cover tunes on side one of faithful are so accurate I can barely distinguish them from the original artists!
@@ShaneJung Whatever his intention, it didn't work IMO.
@@NelsonMontana1234 For what ever reason it didn’t get the air play it was ‘covered’ by very few bands in my day. You needed two quality guitarist to signature….and the accompaniment of good vocals to boot. Good stuff.
My days in Bearsville are priceless
I want this to play when I die. So true .. at least for me.
There would be no Big Star but for Todd.
2:53-3:09: This 15 second refrain makes this my #1 fave from Todd. I call this "THE SURRENDER."
Smog. Sweet mother of god. I c.
Damn, I’ve always loved this song but never realized that the lyrics are actually kinda relatable
perfect
Nice 👍
The sound. OMG.
I could totally see Boston covering this
I Just Tell You.
0:18 The opening is incredibly beautiful.
chef d'oeuvre. quel tube nom d'un zgueg
I just love this song. Play it all the time when I'm busking with great re$ponse. J
Chrissie Hynde must have listened to this. A lot.
A Rosicrusian master mocking the Sun of God. Back to the Bars
If you like this song, you might just like the parent album, a double-LP of pure pop heaven from one of the few true geniuses of the pop-rock genre. Todd can do anything, but even on a gem like this song, I find his drumming a bit stiff. Check out Side 4 of Something/Anything?, where his friends join in. Political incorrectness aside, "Slut" is a musical onslaught. Todd's "Whew!" at the end says it all. Excluding his ace production work for countless other artists, this LP is the high-water mark of All Things Todd, and this song the high-water mark of Beatlesque power pop as genre parody-homage (as opposed to the more sincere, organic PP stylings of Big Star, The Raspberries, et al.).
Saw him in 74. Masonic Hall Detroit. Still have the ticket stub.
I heard this on Tom Petty radio (Sirius), Tom loved it!
Yes Eric Carmen of The Raspberries was from Cleveland. Todd is huge in Cleveland. It makes total sense.
Alien: What do humans call power pop?
Human: This song.
I call it jellyfish
@@miked3168 Many people do.
And Nick Lowe "Pure Pop For Now People" plus Dave Edmunds "Crawling From The Wreckage"
Todd was just on some Decades show
👍
Influential.
That so much laid the template for Boston later on
Todd Rundgren Torch Song
If and only if the star crowned ones here were export I don't know. I'm sure they import my small life. Dont make me do the math.
Everytime I hear this song I think of my youth before punk rock and hanging with my sister, listening to broadcast radio before it all became a such a cookie cutter joke.
I'd say the boys in Cheap Trick were listening to Todd when they were getting going.....
You're welcome J. Mascis.
Influenced by Big Star.
Not likely. This was released the same year as Big Star's first album "#1 Record". Big Star had just formed the previous year and Rundgren had been writing/producing records long before Big Star hit the scene.
Excellent observation, and the first time that would have occurred to me, after 50 years .
Yeah, probably the other way around.
heard he wanted to sound like the beatles for this song
Drummer speeds up the intro.
thats todd
Drummer was Todd
Sounds like Ace Frehley
Make something clear other than your bass player falling on his ass on stage jamming to this work
Like J-POP
Hate his politics, love his music.
Until you mentioned it I didn't realise he was so anti-Trump. He's suddenly gone up in my estimation enormously.
Who cares? He's a musical genius.
@@petersharpe8515 If all musicians had the intellect of Nugent, it'd be pretty embarrassing.
I'd just rather have *all* performers, be they musicians or actors, to just shut their pie hole and stick to what they're being paid to do, entertain us.
He's against racist politicians and he has two of the greatest albums ever? Love him even more.
He's no Janet Jackson.
Thank God.

Sad that the drummer can NOT keep time.
