    With the Taekwondo class that I did, we did do a lot more punching ( jab, hook, uppercut) than what you would expect, but very little hard punching. The rest were all kicks. We had to kick above the belt. We have done padwork on elbows and knees, but not allowed to use in sparring.

    I’m sadly not doing martial arts, but I have trained in ITF TKD and Shaolin Kung Fu in the past. In my opinion, the way TKD was formulated shows when you train in it. It is more rigid in its patterns, has a relatively simple set of stances and some potentially devastating kicking techniques. It was formulated by a military man and meant to be distributed to the masses (soldiers if I remember) and you can see that in its methodology. You have a footwork that is relatively easy to ground in, but you won’t be able to use it to kick and strike very fluidly until you are a red or black belt in my opinion unless you are an exceptional learner.
    One of the issues with TKD is that I think even in ITF schools too much emphasis is put on it being a sort of sport with rules rather than aggressive fighting or fighting in emergency situations and the way is is taught is too sell it to a large group of people for profit. Certainly am not saying it is a fake martial art or TKD dojangs are Mcdojos, just it has more limited martial applications than boxing in my view.
    Kung Fu on the overhand is very aggressive if you train with the right master and is also a lot more complex and requires more training to master. It can be lethal and has a full range of teqnigues including grappling, striking and choking to complement its kicks and and punches. So you are very well prepared to fight if you train hard in it and should have experience with fighting that is quite aggressive and at times unpleasant. But a good verse in Kung Fu, especially if you supplement it with Sanda or Sanshou can be very effective and you’ll learn a thing or two you couldn’t use in a ring. It all depends on the fighter more than anything though.

    for how limited a boxer actually is (not being allowed to use the legs at all other than their great footwork), it's genuinly impressive that boxers are seen to be the winner. I, as a boxer was surprised as the simple range difference would negate a boxer, with a little bias you could say the boxer just needs to slip and close up. So im genuinly impressed with the information

    Difference is boxing has some of the best athletes because they are paid big money to fight vs in tkd there is 0 money in it so obviously you are gonna get better “fighters” but personally I have trained with handful of boxers and surprised them as I did traditional taekwondo where we train with hands and even simple submissions.

  • @green5green569
    @green5green569 Год назад +3

    personally i believe if a taekwondo practitioner was trained for full contact and knew how to use the rest of taekwondo to defend punches it would win on the other hand as i've done both boxing and taekwondo, boxing is alot more intense and not nearly as relaxed so a boxer is the "better fighter" however if a taekwondo practitioner lands a powerful kick or a slick strike it'd have alot more damage behind it.

      I took takwondo the kicks can be effective if used right. Kicking dose have more power then punching but it has a couple disadvantages. It's slower making it easier to counter and it less accurate. I only got to a green belt in takwondo so I have no idea how good I would have gotten have I stayed to black belt.

      More often than not I’d agree. I think TKD fighting is often taught in the context of being a sport (even ITF) and that takes away from self-defence. A very well trained TKD fighter with experience in fighting could potentially take out a boxer but they’d need to strike very fast and get a quick knock out. I think a fighter taking too long would result in in the boxer figuring it out that it’s all about the kicks and once he was able to guard from them he could grab a leg and have them down.

    As i understand it, taekwondo has an incredibly and embarrasingly large misconseption. I hear sayings similar to "taekwondo cant throw a punch", wouldnt this be because of the sport favoring kicks over punches, practically neglecting them alltogether, thus having practitioners with no punching capability? when you look back in ITF or Traditional taekwondo, theres a huge arsenal even including well rounded knees, elbows, and a variety of hand strikes... Would taekwondos reputation nowadays be because of howe train practitioners now?
