Update since this video a little word of caution using the tsc tractor clear it doesn't have the same level of UV protection as some of the other cheap clears on the market we have experienced better results since using automotive 2k clears such as Speedokote at the same price point. I would recommend using a better quality clear coat moving forward as this was not a garage kept car and has faded since. Thanks for watching!!!!
Which speedokote clear would you recommend that would work with the rustoleum oil based enamel?
amzn.to/4bpDycK
Here's my link to it thanks for watching
Great input on overall thought of how it last and preforms compared to other products
Brrooo that Green is The Bomb !! I'm Loving it !!
😮😮😮😮beautiful job
Amazing work bro ! I'm going to do this wit mi car ! Thanks
Man, your pushing out some awesome work!👍
Came out nice! 🔥
Would it be ok to use Rust-Oleum hunter green as the undercoat
Yes it would thanks for watching
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKSwould that cut down on the layers of clear coat and pearl ?
@richpoquette1885 yes it would possibly but it also might change the final color so you wanna match things up best you can
Awesome! Worth the work to get it looking that good. Gives me ideas for my cars.
Thanks for watching I appreciate your comment
Hey this is a great result. Do you think your coverage could have been lessened by having more pearl in your mix. I have a 92 firebird that I'm wanting to do something similar too. Thanks
Yeah you can always add more or less Pearl the big thing is if you had too much pearl then you get a lot of clumping and if you don't add enough then you don't get the coverage but you can always go back and add more coats so it's really a trial and error thing I recommend doing a small scale spray out first tho so you know what to expect
Howdy, great job. I cant seem to find the carbon green anywhere. Can you supply a direct link to the carbon green you used? Thanks
www.columbiacoatings.com/Carbon-Green-Pearl it's a kp pigments pearl but they no longer have it on their site this is the only place I found it thanks for watching
I’m not good with measurements but how many oz is 30% acetone added to two quarts of base coat? And did you use any speed dry or hardener to the base coat?
With Rust-Oleum paint a closer measurement would be 3/4 cup of acetone to 2 quarts of paint or get a paint cup with the measurements on the side and go 3 to 1 as far as hardener and speed dry they aren't required but do help against any shrinkage from applying a clear with a hardener over a base with none. The majic hardener mixes a pint to the gallon so you would use half the pint and speed dry is about the same but I rarely use it depending on temp. When I did this paint job I didn't use either in the base but it really comes down to preference and what you find to work best for you. Hope this helped thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for explaining it definitely helped out alot
Can you cut and buff the pearl clear coat to get a better gloss?
Yes but I have since moved against the tractor supply clear coat due to it's lack of uv protection I'm only recommending 2k urethane clear coat now such as Nason or speedokote.
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS thank you!
How long did you wait to clear the rustoleum
About an HR or so depending on the temperature
Looks great did you use a harder?
Magic enamel hardener works great got it from tractor supply or you can get it online thanks for watching
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS It looks great thanks for sharing gives me an idea for my car.
Why Flat Black, not SemiGloss or Gloss? I'm sure there is a reason, just interested in knowing what it is. Car looks good.
I'm glad you asked actually there is virtually no significance behind it being flat black or gloss of any kind you're just using it as a foundation coat for the Pearl to lay on top of and with other pearls you might use a white base coat or even Gray but you want a neutral base for the Pearl depending on the effect you are going for. Thanks for watching hope this answered your question
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS ok, thanks. Maybe you can tell me about metallics and metalflakes. Are they both the same aluminum chips with metallic just being smaller? And if so about what size is considered the difference? I ask because I painted the tank on my vintage race bike with Rustoleum Top Coat Navy. It looks great but I would have liked to add metallic to it, metalflake is a little big flake for my taste but I don't know what to get to just add metallic. Thanks.
Pearls are the smallest pretty much powder then you have micro flakes which are the smallest actual flakes which sounds like the route you might wanna go to get a little better than a factory metallic finish and then the generic metal flakes which come in various sizes all the way up to what I like to call boat glitter in thickness.
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS that factory metallic is pretty much what I'm wanting. Boat glitter is a good way to describe metalflake. I'll research micro flake, sounds like what I'm looking for. Thanks
Why not take the emblems off before you paint?
Personal preference he wanted them painted
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS Well in that case... (I thought they were taped).
@@imaouima normally I would tape them up or remove them but I was doing the car with a buddy of mine and he just wanted them painted
what clear did you use? the Majic Clear Coat Laquear?
Yes the magic clear coat with the hardener thanks for watching 👍
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS BRO YOU PUT YOUR FOOT IN them paintjobs stg 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😩😩and here they said you couldnt add majic clear coat on top of rustoleum but you did! how long did you wait before adding the cleaR?
Why everytime i use that clear the Finish feels like bedliner
I don't recommend that clear anymore only 2k urethane clear coat I use speedokote best for the money amzn.to/3yOJMUl
Thank u but do u know y it does that I'm new to painting and making sure it no me mess up
@tjsmith4116 it's a very cheap laquer based clear which has a tendency to shrink and it dries out very easily if left in the sun consistently. The urethane based clear has a flex agent and excellent uv protection so it doesn't shrink and last many years without issues even over Rust-Oleum
Honestly for some junk paint.... Not terrible.
Yea Rust-Oleum paint jobs at the end of the day will never compare to the quality of automotive materials but great for the diy user just getting into painting and a great alternative to someone thinking of doing a custom wrap or dip to their car. Thanks for watching I follow your channel as well great content 😎👍
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS you spent around 200 on material I'll assume?
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 prob around $120 for paint and clear to do that car then if you add prep materials yes closer to $200 this was with left over materials I had from other projects. I personally prefer automotive paints I work at a Napa paint store but being that Rust-Oleum paint jobs are so popular and I'm still a growing channel I decided to cover it in this video as it was a project a buddy of mine wanted to do. If you look at my other videos I do other paint jobs with all the typical automotive materials such as Nason cromax etc.
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS quart of jet black base at your local paint store will only run you 65-75
Speedokote smr1150 Is around 75 bucks
For only 20-50$ more could have done it with all legit automotive paint.
Try it next time 😊
