  • Is the SilencerCO ASR Mount flawed? Or is it just user error when a suppressor goes flying off the host? In this video I talk about the design and use of the ASR mount and my opinion about it after using it and competing with it for several years.

    There are too many videos of ASR mounted cans eating belt-fed full-auto cyclic strings for me to believe that it isn't user error. I mean hell, the suppressor meltdown video was between 350-400 continuous rounds before the can melted, and the mount was still on the muzzle device.

    There are no flaws with the ASR mount design. My opinion on the ASR mounts is that is a great option that allows use of the suppressor in many weapon platforms that have the adapters installed. Attention to details is a most. As with any firearm, attention to details is a no brainer. Great instructional video. Thank you..

    I've been shooting the Omega 300 using 556, 300, and 30.06, for the past several months. Once it's been properly seated, there was no play. The craftsmanship of the Omega is solid. I am sure the makers have thoroughly put the mounts through vigorous testing before releasing it to the public. I believe it was user error that may have caused the malfunction.

      @@AdventureColorado Hey AC, how much force does it take to lock the collar on an ASR mount? My biggest concern was threading the suppressor on correctly, locking the collar, and then in some scenario out in the field, you brush the suppressor against cover and it unlocks the collar without you knowing. Just received stamp #4 on Friday, a SAKER 762 ASR. Put several rounds through it Saturday and really am pleased with my purchase. I think this mount will be just fine and looks to be robust. If you pay attention to every aspect of shooting and don't get in a hurry, the mount should lock up true every time. You’re correct on the user error. I was shooting my hybrid at night on Scar17 heard the ratcheting click and thought I was good. Blew a hole through my end cap and sent my can about 10 yards down range. Always double check it.

  • @TekPrimeMIA

    As someone who has shot his hybrid downrange, its def user error. That day I was tired and moving fast and did exactly what is described in this video, it was ratcheted down but not fully seated. Luckily I was shooting .223 and the internal baffles are sized to .45 so I only struck the aluminum front end-cap. It was kinda funny watching the suppressor fly down the range like a 40mm, If not completely embarrassing. I wanted a system that locked over a muzzle brake and the asr still seems like a good option. A few folks have recommended upgrading to the dead air system but being $300+ into ASR with multiple brakes, spending that money again seems like a bad investment seeing as how overpriced the attachments are.

  • @MacCready_

    It is very easy to adjust the locking tension of the ASR mount. The loops on the locking spring can be bent out slightly, giving more tension against the locking ring. Lock/unlock the can enough and this adjustment will need to be done eventually.

    I have a bunch of 3 lug adapters for my Omega 45K and Gemtech Multi-mount 9. I just learned to mark the top of the suppressor after zeroing the gun; and, shooting it suppressed with a POI at 4 o’clock of bullseye unsuppressed. At 25 yards POI is about 1” from bullseye. I have a MAAD mount for Saker 556 and ASR for Specwar 762. I love my MAAD Mount.

  • @johnfriend862
    @johnfriend862 3 года назад +1

    I changed to the ASR mount from the MAAD mount. IMHO the MAAD mount was dangerous, as I had several instances of my Saker flying downrange when I thought the mount was securely locked onto the flash hider. Apparently SilencerCo agreed, as they don't supply anything with the MAAD mount anymore. The ASR is a much better mount, you do have to be mindful of the teeth inside the locking ring being lined up with the collar on the flash hider, but that's easy to figure out. If the locking ring doesn't rotate easily, you're not lined up right. Just snug the suppressor a hair and the locking ring will rotate easily into place.
    I use only the Trifecta flash hider, I no longer use a muzzle brake. The brake is a pain to line up just right on initial install, and the blast from the brake is outrageous. With a 7.5" 5.56, I literally thought the rifle had exploded in my hands.

    • @AdventureColorado
      @AdventureColorado  3 года назад

      The muzzle brake is a pain to line up properly. I like to use them as I think of them as a sacrificial blast baffle for the suppressor. My guns with muzzle brakes are almost never shot without the suppressor though, so I don't usually worry to much about the concussion of the brake.

    I have owned an Omega 300 for about 3 years and have multiple ASR mounts on other AR platforms. While I find the ASR seems secure enough and I have never had any problems with it becoming loose, and I acknowledge that user error may contribute to a loose fit, my problems are the opposite. Once it goes on a rifle, it will NOT come off. To date, I have had to use a strap wrench, soak it in penetrating oil, disassemble the can, and soak the mount. All at various times. I have taken it to a gunsmith and to a machine shop. All scratch their heads and say 'hmm. Maybe it was carbon?" Last time out, I cleaned the gun and ASR threads and lubed them. Mounted the can, just snug enough to close the lock ring, and put the rifle in the safe. Last week (3 months later), the can is stuck to the mount again. The can will unscrew from the mount. The ASR brake will unscrew from the rifle (that takes a LOT of effort) but the can will not break loose from the mount. Yes, the lock ring is retarded. I am thinking seriously about putting all my ASR stuff on GB or Ebay and switching to something else.

    • @AdventureColorado
      @AdventureColorado  2 года назад +1

      That is unfortunate that you have so many problems with it seizing up. I have noticed that mine will occasionally seize, usually on newer muzzle brakes that haven't been used much. I've also noticed it if I shoot a lot through an AR and get it really hot and dirty, but usually I just need a little extra force to get it off. I don't think I have ever had to get out the strap wrench to get it off.

      @@AdventureColorado I was discussing this issue with a friend and fellow shooter yesterday. He kept pointing out that I should have removed the can after shooting allowing it to cool while unmounted. It took me some effort to get it across that the can and gun WERE cool, both had been cleaned then stored with the can mounted. I have had to do exactly what is seen in one of SilCo's videos on what it looks like when a can is disassembled and has to be returned to get the mount removed from the suppressor. I don't shoot full auto, or do mag dumps. Ammo costs too much. :)

So long as you make sure that you properly seat and thread the ASR mount on there shouldn't be any issues. I had a 36M go flying (into a lake- no lie) with an ASR mount. The locking mech was always loose on that thing. It almost slid back and forth by itself. After I recovered the can, there was a baffle strike. SilencerCo fixed it no problem and replaced the mount. I have much more confidence in the thing now. Did I mount it while the lever was locked? I thought not, but I guess it's possible.

    Agreed on the user error, being that it happened to me once. After realizing what I did and luckily avoiding a baffle strike, hasn't happened since. One thing I deal with regularly on my ASR Mount is seizing. Even with anti-seize it happens regularly. Usually trying to put on a rifle that hasn't been shot yet that day. Anyone else, or have you done a video on that? Thanks.

      I haven't done a video on seizing. I've been pretty fortunate in that I haven't had much of an issue with it. I've had it be tight a few times, but I haven't had to use tools to remove it yet.

    • @pozog8987
      @pozog8987 2 года назад +1

      Based on what you said ("Usually trying to put on a rifle that hasn't been shot yet that day.") I am almost entirely sure your seizing has to do with putting a hot can on a cold gun. That's a major no-no with ASR. When a can's threads are hot, they are slightly expanded. After mounting, when the can's threads cool they contract back down and lock-up to the host's threads causing a seize.

      @@AdventureColorado Theres a reddit post that I found a while back where the engineer that designed the ASR admitted that there's a problem with the design. He no longer works for SilencerCo, but I have had to purchase anti-seize compound to prevent the carbon lock. I coat the threads lightly with the anti-seize, if i dont i have to use a rubber mallet. The ASR could work, but the taper lock is too short on the surface. If you get a chance to checkout the Plan B and the Cherry Bomb by Q, you'll see the taper lock surface area is at least 2-3x as long as the ASRs. I have seen on my Cherry Bomb to have some heat leak into the taper lock, but never penetrate all the way. Seeing that has convinced me that the ASR is a flawed design if you have high pressure weapons firing at a rapid rate. If your shooting for accuracy, I don't think the issue presents itself as I haven't had much issue on my bolt action in 308 @ 18". Do you think that speed aside, direct thread is a better attachment method? I have a 36M on order and want to use the best and most secure method, which appears to be direct thread with a basic thread protector or comp when not using the can. ASR used correctly seems just as good, but just a bit faster.

    • @AdventureColorado
      @AdventureColorado  3 года назад

      A lot of precision shooters prefer direct thread, which in theory should have a little less potential movement when mounted. With direct thread you will have to check the can occasionally to make sure that it doesn't loosen while shooting. It's also less convenient if you are trying to mount to hosts with different thread pitches.

      I don't know that there is really a "best" mount. Everyone is going to have an opinion on what they have used and like. The ASR has worked just fine for me, but there are a lot of other good option out there. In general you get stuck into a mount style when you choose your suppressor.

      My opinion surefire has the best “mount” for attach and detach for suppressors. Super fast and solid. The only issue I have with my omega is once unlocked the suppressor body seems to unlock before the ASR mount so I end up using the tool to detach the suppressor

  • @phatspanky1

    Just ordered my first suppressor. SilencerCo 36m. When you install the suppressor will it always be oriented in the same location or does it sometimes orient at a different location. Ie 12 oclock vs 3 oclock vs 5 oclock etc. Does a very small variation effect repeatability?

    • @AdventureColorado
      @AdventureColorado  4 года назад +1

      In my experience it will line up the same each time for a specific gun. Variations can cause point of impact shifts, but any shift is minor enough in my setups for match shooting that I am comfortable taking the suppressor off in between matches and knowing that it will be close enough that I won't be able to notice a difference on steel down range.

  • @FC2ESWS
    @FC2ESWS 2 года назад

    That design is flawed man. A baffle or end cap strike is very dangerous and as such there needs to be a fool proof way or visual or audible indicator that confirms you got it screwed on correctly.
    I just recently shot off my Hybrid that I've used for 6+ years thinking I had screwed it on as I normally do.
    Think about it, if this many people have done it, there's an issue. SilencerCo should at least have sent out a warning or recall or something about it.

    • @AdventureColorado
      @AdventureColorado  2 года назад

      While it would be convenient to have an indicator that it is screwed on all the way, you could say the same thing about a direct thread suppressor. It's all the way on when it has been screwed in as far as it will go. The thing that you have to be careful of is the locking collar.

    YOU CANNOT MOUNT WITH A CRUSH WASHER! Use the timing shims and tighten to spec using a thread locker but do not wrench so balls tight that you cant the Flash suppressor/brake. A very slight deviation from true on it will end up with a fraction of an inch from center at the end of your silencer resulting in a baffle strike!

    If you are buying a suppressor AND STILL using hearing protection then WHY DID YOY WASTE SO MUCH on effectively NOTHING?! Do your homework… ZERO 5.56 is worth buying a suppressor for OTHER than for flash suppression since the entire point of the tiny 5.56 is the speed. Use any subsonic 5.56 and might as well be throwing rocks. So suppressors are used for BIG SLOW moving projectiles that still are very effective due to the weight of each projectile and not the speed. So why bother pay a grand or more for a suppressor that still requires the same hearing protection than if the suppressor wasn’t used?! People just want to LOOK cool to really only idiots that don’t know the logic behind ballistics and all that goes with it.

    • @AdventureColorado
      @AdventureColorado  Год назад

      Have you used a suppressor? There are more advantages than just sound suppression. Even with a supersonic projectile, the overall report of the rifle is reduced, not to mention the reduction in flash, recoil, concussion, etc.
      Despite your rant about "idiots that don't know the logic behind ballistics" there are a large number of competitive shooters that use suppressors with supersonic rounds.
