Sorry about taking so long to post this. We ran into lots of trouble rebuilding this rear axle. Needed to buy parts, new tools, fabricate some tools, modify some others... but it's finally back together!
I didn't get as much video of the process as I hoped since it was cold and we were concentrating on getting it done ASAP.
Thanks for watching! - Хобби
Lol! Love the paperwork that came with the kit! Great job thanks for sharing and walking us through it
Yeah, those specifications looked weird to me too, but who am I to argue lol! Thanks for watching and commenting!
burningdinosaurs that was great!
What a fun video! Love the voiceover and the subtle suggestion to subscribe 😂
"subtle suggestion to subscribe" ?? I have no idea what you're talking about lol! Yeah, I didn't get as much video as I should have so I had to voiceover but hopefully it came out OK. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Dang. You got a nice rear end!!
I blush!
It's really not as good as it used to be. She's really let herself go - has a lotta miles on her and just isn't as nice as it was 10 years ago.
Nice video and camera work putting it together! I never liked spreading the case. I put a ring and pinion in a 450 one time with only 70,xxx miles. Wasn’t worn out the guy just wanted 4;10 instead of 4:88. But the carrier bearings had very significant wear. Ended up having to plane the thick shims down some so it didn’t preload it so hard.
Yeah the amount of force it takes to spread that case is incredible, so you gotta figure there's about the same force pre-loading the bearings too which seems like a lot! When we took it out, there was no preload at all... there were several things that weren't quite right about it. But hopefully she's way better now! We ended up with no shims between the bearings and diff and only about a total of 0.015 total between both sides after setting the backlash. I've rebuilt a lot of axles, mostly all 3/4ton stuff or smaller or cars, hand full of Ford 9" from the racecar days, and I have to say of all of them, the Dana 80 was probably the biggest pain in the rear (lol... see what I did there??)! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Jake what brand of gear set did you use for the 4:10 conversion? I use my 2008 6.4 F 450 to pull a 12000 lb. Fifth Wheel over Colorado mountains but my fuel mileage is atrocious, I think 4:10s would fit the bill with proper use of my tow haul control and manual use of the auto trans selector , what do you think? Thanks for any advice- oh and about how much in labor?
Great vid. Love the camera work. BTW I kept hitting the sub button every time I looked at the spec sheet- weird 😄
Thanks! I just watched it myself and ended up subscribing to the jelly-of-the-month club... I guess that's the gift that gives the whole year long so that ain't too bad, but that darned spec-sheet strikes again lol! Thanks for watching and commenting!
The rear end is a dana that was built for GM, Ford, Dodge, International, etc. evidently it can't take the masive torque from a Ford. or someone else like had iut apart and didn't torque the nut
My favorite part was the end soundtrack
Do you have the clip where you do the measurements for backlash and shin selection?
Hey man! Where did you buy that rebuild kit? Any suggestions?
Do you remember what you torqued the bolts that put the two half's of the carrier to?
Shoot... I don't remember off hand. I checked that sheet I printed off and didn't have it on there. According to what I found on google, it should be 90-100, and 100 honestly sounds familiar to me.
thanks telling us how to do it
Well, I'm sure it could have been better, but hopefully it helped! Thanks for watching and commenting!
hows them usa parts holding up?
Hello, wonderful man. Please tell me the weight of this Dana super 60? Can not find. Thank, good luck.
I'm not really sure, sorry. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I know this video is 3 years old but I replace my pinion bearing and racer. Didn’t change anything else. Do I still have still check the depth/ gear pattern on it ? Or am my good ?
Sorry, don't get on youtubes much anymore. If you're changing the outside (bearing closest to the yoke & driveshaft, you shouldn't have to, you'll only have to re-set the preload on the pinion. If you're changing the rear (bearing closest to the gear teeth), you'll have to re-set the pinion depth. If reusing the ring & pinion, you shouldn't have to re-shim the carrier to set back-lash, but wouldn't hurt. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Need that rearend spreader for a bedroom project...
Wat size socket u use to remove huge yoke nut
Hmmm, I'm not sure. It's been about a year now and I don't remember. Sorry! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@burningdinosaurs old thread just updating it....the pinion nut is 1 7/8" ..
Hey is there a way to rebuild a Dana 80 rear end without spreading the rear end? The rear end in my dad's dodge dually has bad pinion bearings. And we don't have a tool to stretch the rear axle
Not sure, we didn't have the correct tool either, so we built one. But I'm not sure if you can just hammer in the shims or something or if that would be a problem. I'm sure lots of D80s have been rebuilt without spreading them tho. Let me know what you come up with
pry bar to pull the carrier out...to install. use rubber mallet hitting there shims back in...there is also a shim tool to hit them in...
Can you just rebuild mine for me?
Are you near Central Iowa? Otherwise shipping is gunna be a killer!
Complete waste of my time
