I calculate that Lyle and Pat’s age is around 26-27 at the time of this recording. This is one of the most amazing piano solos I’ve ever heard bar none. And to think that on a podcast in 2016 Lyle Mays said that he didn’t consider himself to be a Jazz Pianist... whatever. Seriously, he is one of the best to have graced us with his presence in the last 100 years.
I’m more convinced these two are aliens. Both solos were profound and it’s prob the best I’ve heard from both which spans 25 years of listening. At 24 years or so old!!!
Amazing these guys just threw this in as a nod to what critics at the time might call "real jazz" - i.e. the kind of jazz these guys weren't playing, and by inference "couldn't" play. I saw the group do this a year or two before this in Providence RI, and though I was utterly blown away by all their originals, when they did this it convinced the "jazzer" in me that these guys were the real deal, even beyond. A lifetime of inspiration for me.
@@TheSubconsciousness me too! I came here for Pat Metheny and fell in Love withe the piano solo. Magic! It has everything in it I'm looking for! Very inspiring
I saw these guys in Denton, maybe '79, what a show; afterwards they jammed a bunch of Beach Boys tunes! The cats at NTSU were mesmerized. It was Lyle's homecoming.
Lyle is/was one of the utterly most underrated jazz musicians ever!! His writing and playing both! I’m ashamed of the Jazz media! The fact that he quit playing bc of the biz is the ultimate slap in the face for any upcoming musicians…good luck everyone!
Clear evidence that Lyle and Pat had paid their dues already at this early point in their careers. They just dance through the changes without losing their melodic themes.
The greatest thing is to love music and be loved by it. That's what Pat is all about. Within that realm of love, he expands himself, pushes the bounderies, and goes on the amazing excursions no other guitarists have tried before, brings back what only he can present to us. And to many of us, that's why Pat's music is so unique, catalytic, and original. I don't want Pat to play another same ol' boring bebop phrases, because that's not what music is all about.
I was going to say: Sorry everyone but Lyle takes the show for me; what a solo! But then I carried on listening through and realised, yeah, Pat really is an absolute phenomenon.
One of the best if not the best piano improvisation I have ever heard another another great example of not letting the ego get in the way. Just letting go which is an art in itself and letting the f gift of music come through. Just brilliant and deep but still light and airy. Unreal
This is just so sick good. When the band kicks in after his solo solo I do have to cry a little. This is true musical freedom and a human being on its divine level, where the light suddenly can be tickly touched.
I speak from (limited) experience: Jazz musicians do not have time to worry about their hair. It may appear lazy, but it is a matter of priority. They wake up, play jazz, and go to sleep. Doing drugs is part of the equation, but not as often as people think (it is too expensive). Pussy is also part of the equation, but not as often as people think (it is too expensive). Either way, the hair is not a priority. Hair will do what hair will do. I play jazz not hair.
LYLE May's eye's closed in touch with the sole of this standard..is truly missed and can not be replaced..his vision took this combination places.... all due respect 🙏... brilliant players and a pleasant way to pass a very fast ten minutes with a wonderful standard 😀
i have no idea what pat was playing but it was mesmerizing, put me in a trance...... amazing.... i cant believe he just played that.... its beyond human capacity.....

Oustanding! It's always fund to see videos from the very early days of the PMG; the old ES175 looks practically new. Thanks so much for posting Chileanskies, great great stuff. BTW, I also agree that Lyle is an amazing and underappreciated pianist; the PMG just wouldn't be the same without him; here's hoping they make another album.
Here ya go: reverb.com/p/roland-jazz-chorus-jc-120 "[T]he JC-120 has been the mainstay of guitarists looking for its unique sound since its introduction in 1975. It has been used by such artists as Albert King, Andy Summers, Robert Smith, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Pat Metheny, Jeff Buckley, and Roger Hodgson."
Who else is in the band (bass.drums?) Lyle Mays has always been able to do this stuff. I heard him when he was with Woody Herman and he was great then playing four brothers and Herman chestnits from the old days.
When I first heard Pat I must admit that I wasn't impressed because of his visual but now after listening to this early recordings I realize that I was not listening with my heart. What a natural talent PM is. Shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.
Opening piano is fantastic. Don't kow who it is though. As for Metheny, call me a purist (and as a jazz musician perhaps I am!) but he always sounds to me like a jazz guitarist going to a Halloween party as a rock star. Methane is a truly great jazz guitarist - and his lines here, after mentally filtering his sound , are captivating. But his sound kills it for me. It's almost as if he's terrified that the only thing holding his audience is this mask he hides behind. I genuinely, truly believe that if he lived on a planet where people actually listened to, apprecuated and understood jazz, he'd drop the gimmicks and simply play.
+jpcannavo Yeah, I tend to agree, the opening keys were fantastic, breathtaking in fact, perhaps so much so Pat decided to answer with avant garde; perhaps a little too avant garde. I see what he is going for with the whole out-there approach; however, I tend to think he did lose the plot a little, he does actually do a great version of this tune with just bass and drums.
pat sounds okay(I prefer his tone w/o the overuse of delay&chorus), but WOW, lyle mays sounds insanely good in this. it's probably one of the best solos i've ever heard.

This is literally Oscar Peterson level piano playing. Pat's at a whole other level too. Great stuff❤

Lyle Mays - absolutely stunning. The Guy is a monster...

That’s because Pat came in unexpectedly fast and ripping. People probably just stopped in their tracks…it happens.

Yep... Lyle's solo is the best I ever heard on that tune. Any instrument. Prodigy...
I never had a doubt that Lyle Mays plays traditional jazz but never listened it before.
Lyle Mays in the zone!
