The BEST band I personally ever heard. This is a once in a lifetime original sound that is all theirs. Return to forever, weather report-like monumental. Mind blowing.
One of my favourite videos on RUclips. At least once I week I come here, get my shit together and head back to life. Just love how calm and uplifting it is...
I remember seeing Pat early 70's. We sat on a rug on the floor and were looking up at the band playing. They were from that day to this among the very best musical groups playing today!
Absolutely knock out. I read somewhere that PM finds RUclips vids of old gigs a bit galling but, honestly, this is remarkably good. Just a unique concept of sound and composition. This is 1980 but sounds just as good in 2019 as it did 40 years ago.
Don't know how I missed this piece.. been following PMG/got most albums/CDs since American Garage.. guess it was overshadowed by something else. This is the original lineup when they were just "kids". THANK YOU for uploading this.
This was on Pat's 1st record..Bright Size Life..a trio record with Jaco and Bob Moses..the group never recorded it together..obviously played it live though..😉
We are so effing lucky this video exists. I missed this lineup by one year (saw them in 1981) and as much as I love what followed, this lineup and this set are it for me.
Onkel Po’s club in Hamburg. A place with a vibe. Where Al Jarreau launched practically 5 years earlier. Why did that time create the music that transformed us all? Where did it go? No one in this video that night cared a kick about social media or what to E it was. We all just listened- and want d more. Some of even took up our own musical journey. Man it was great. I need to look forward but looking back teaches me so much - and it seems more alive than ever. I’m grateful I can studio this music now and learn from it. What a gift.
Amen. I miss hearing Lyle's deep solos on Pat's recordings. Nobody does a better job of creating a solo that tells a story and builds the story to a climax. His left hand playing compliments his right so well.
Great!! This brings back great memories of playing this music in Boston in the late 70's! And of course Pat's excellent Bright Size Life record. Thanks for posting!
He asistido a tantos conciertos de Pat...Pero cuanto me hubiese gustado estar en éste...Veo a esos integrantes del grupo, los que aparecen en la contraportada de American Garage y se me ponen los pelos de punta.

hey rex. thats his old gibson es-175. i think its from 1958. He took out the bridge pickup as you can see, and the switch, just filled them in. He played this until the late 90s i think (along with his ibanez) but then retired it. He used flat wound strings and turned the tone almost all the way down. Add his true chorus sound invention and micro delay and you got the sound! @ Rex Shaffer
There used to be a performance of "Airstream" from this same Hamburg (1980) gig. Could whoever has the tape of this concert please put that song up once again?!
Yeah it’s really difficult to play besides a musical hurricane that’s jaco was but of course the most beautiful hurricane in the history of electric bass love you jaco still the best
@boasdubbelman Same here. One of my most favorite Pat Metheny compositions. Also one of my favorite Jaco solos on that record. It's just so poignant over those changes.
I've heard him get great tone from a Roland jazz chorus. Nothing negative against tube amps, but it make me wonder about the fuss many people make about the tube vs solid state amps.I'm old enough to remember how TVs sounded back in the 60s, when it was all tubes, but I've never heard anyone lament about the sound you get from a flatscreen tV.
Listen to Steve's solo on Insensatez on the Speaking of Now DVD. Also the way classic PMG tracks like 5-5-7 or So May it Secretly Begin start with a Steve bass riff. He is not as upfront as Egan. But Pat knew what he was doing when he hired him
Wow. So great. Heard these guys many times and with Joni Mitchell. The group must have gone through mega gallons of shampoo and conditioner even on one tour.
Wow, you can actually hear the bass. I'm sorry folks. I just came back from rehearsal. Let me ask you. Why must the average guitar player play so loud, then they aim their amp at me as if I can't hear them? I've got to sit with my ear to my amp or I can't hear myself at all. This guitarist actually ruined my hearing, no kidding. I can't hear birds with my right ear. He's on my right. I decided to fix his tone by giving him a Mesa Boogie. His first words to me were "not loud enough, dude!, not loud enough, dude!" as if I didn't hear him the first time. A " thank you" would have been nice but that guy's an idiot who doesn't understand good tone. It'd be nice if he would have turned down. I refuse to play with him any longer. I just knew him since 1st grade is all. It's a mystery to me why guitarists have to turn up so loud. But I've meet some who don't. I bet Metheny doesn't and if he did, I'd like it.
Pat Metheny guitar , Lyle Mays keyboards, Dan Gottlieb drum and Marc Egan bass. Great quartet
