I neglected to show the Get Books tab, which is one of the best features. On that, you can sort by book stores including the free options like Project Gutenberg or the Internet Archive. This allows you to download books directly into your library from inside the application. Just click that button and select the sources you want it to look for books and search. If it is free, it will be a download button, otherwise it takes you to the sales page to buy the book...note, however, that not all store options allow you to easily add your book into the library (i.e. Look for the free download option, or you can sort by that button.)
Calibre does have bookmark syncing. You need to setup users. Once the user logs into the web portal, it will then sync their reading across any device. I'm using the docker install, so not sure if it makes a difference.
Does the Calibre app for iphone/ipad sync all your content from the desktop Calibre? I don't need it to sync precisely to the same page. I think it may be a good version to use on my ipad instead of my kobo when I want to see the color pictures, i.e. a cookbook or travel book with great photography.
Well done. Thanks. The question still remains “How do I get my purchased amazon books into Calibre”? No nefarious reason just don’t want them to disappear if/when Amazon decides to act.
Yes, there is even a plugin for Calibre that removes the Kindle DRM but it is complicated and doesn't work that good with a WINE prefix with the kindle reader and python as far as I can remember. It only worked in combination with the kindle reader and a Windows install for me back then.
I watched this hoping to see how to easily download and store my Kindle books against future removal from the servers. I need to research deeper I see from what you've said.
I did not address that because removing DRM from your books in the USA is illegal and I will not advise on that. If books in your kindle library are not DRM locked, there is a non-DRM plugin that will migrate them, but being that RUclips censors my videos that are perfectly legal regarding content, I will not do a video here. I might do one on the alt platforms in the future.
Better to simply download the books from "alternative sources" than to give Amazon your money for a license whose terms you don't actually agree with. Buy a paper copy before doing that if you find it weighs on your conscience. Better yet, find a way to give your money directly to the author, don't feed the publishing beast.
I have many books in Amazon Kindle format, tried to plug in Kindle to computer via USB and copy to Calibre and out of about 20 books I could only copy over 2 books because of the books not being in Amazon format but Kdf (or something like that). Anyway, the 2 books I was able to copy to Calibre I can't read because of DRM (or something like that). So, where do I buy books that I can read in Calibre? Kindle reader is not available for Linux.
@@SwitchedtoLinux Does this mean that when getting/buying books from the "Get Books" I need to choose only those that do not have DRM? If I use the "Get Books" and it is, say an epub, with DRM, will I be able to download into Calibre, or will it ask for an ebook reader to download to?
Latest is probably best. One person recently commented that Amazon now forces the Kindle online, but I can't verify this, nor do I know which Kindle they had.

I use calibre v3 because it started to go downhill starting from version 4. User experience is atrocious and (perhaps) only caters to tablet/phone users (which is weird, because it is desktop application). One thing that bothers me about calibre is lack of ability to synchronize libraries. I use calibre on my desktop computer at home and on my laptop at work. I haven't figured a way to synchronize "last position read" between the two (I always use HTMLZ format).
@@JosephKnecht-km9mk Well, locally calibre remembers last location. But I haven't managed to make it "synchronizable" across the net. I use portable version of callibre and even moving whole directory does not achieve this.

This is not a correct assessment of eBooks. This is what happens when you buy into a company running your eBooks. Do yourself a favor and download a simple ebook application from f-Droid on a phone and download some books from Project Gutenberg. Then you will see it is not eBooks that is the problem, but that you put your eggs in someone elses server.
This is about managing your books, not reading them on the computer. Amazon can pull your books away from you at any time for any reason, this method can prevent that.
you can use the tablet without giving any more money or data to Bezos' Omnicorp, there's another video on this channel about that. It's frankly just stupid to "buy" a license to a digital copy of a book that can be taken away from you at any time for any reason, when you could just as easily control the digital copies yourself (and, consequently, actually *own* the media you purchased).

Thanks for sharing . Ive been using Calibre for years. For those not lazy to really care about their nature of access to content, it does a great job

I'll look into this, thanks. Must be a new feature as I spend hours looking into such questions in the past.
First 3 google searches has "calibre" pronounced as in "caliber".
That's because it's correct - just the British spelling.
its also Spanish for Caliber, but it adds the pun of Libro meaning book.

Wish it had an option that allows linking the files instead of creating copies.
actually creating copies is far more convenient because you can edit it as you want
