I would love a walkthrough of your home networking setup! I'm trying to get my own homelab off the ground but the sheer number of possible networking configurations has me absolutely stumped as to how I should proceed. Furthermore, this aspect of homelabbing seems highly underreported--folks are happy to list the applications they run and the environments (kubernetes, docker compose, etc) but fail to mention how they configure their underlying network, where the ingress points are for the services, and just how external requests end up being routed. Having your point of reference would be great!

One of the fundamental issues I've run into is that I can direct my VMs or Dockers to go through VM (Wireguard or OpenVPN) however, they NEVER route internet traffic through the VPN; they connect to the VPN just fine, but traffic they take in/out of the internet never goes through the VPN, which is way less than ideal. Everything looks correct; I've debated whether or not I need to just attach another NIC to the Proxmox box, create a new bridge for it, and then use only that as a test.

As much as i think it would be neat to have a home server, I don't really see myself using /any/ of this on a daily basis. I could be wrong, maybe once it was setup I'd find myself using it, but right now I don't see it. Most of this is just for handing the media library, which I don't have much use for, as most of my media watching I just do on my PC. I don't have a tesla. On other videos I've seen stuff for home automation which I also don't have. I have no need for web hosting. Basically a home server is for either having something run all the time without keeping your main system running or tying up resources, or for granting access to something from multiple locations. I don't really have any need for either of those so a home server doesn't make much sense for me. I can think of a few occasional uses, but nothing that'd I'd use daily off the top of my head.

I'm getting inspired by your videos. How do you get your docker containers to organize your files? (Videos, books, audio, vid etc).

I do it by pointing apps, that happen to be in docker containers, at the shared storage where the media is. It's the apps that do the work, the fact that the apps are in containers is incidental.

    Hi
Please create a video to set up the home ubuntu server and to access it from other networks like the droplet of digitaloceans, EC2 of AWS etc.
    It's a humble request.
    Thanks for your great content

Out of curiosity, with sharing plex access, are you simply using the port forwarding built in?
Looking at what solutions exist currently, and wondering whether the simplest route is best in this case.

Noob here. Why run Plex on a separate box, you can run it on Synology and Unraid, rigth? Even Unraid allows you to run docker containers. I know noob question, just really like to know as I'm just trying to figure out why one vs another.

Careful, Plex is becoming hostile and hashing your local files. This is the first step to identifying copyrighted content.

@@novelhasan4439 No, I don't. I'm reading the Plex and emby channels on reddit and the jellyfin forum almost daily but I have not read about that. I'm an experienced Plex user for years now and I'm in the testing phase for jellyfin for a couple of months now since I'm a little bit concerned too but I have not read about any clear evidance that Plex is hashing local files, that's why I'm asking.

Right now I'm using the built-in firewalls on the Omada system from tp-link. I got rid of the database software that I was using cuz I didn't really need it but I am using a application called snipe-it for inventory management on the business side of things. I'm probably going to do a dedicated video going over my networking setup soon. 😊
