Love how the drummer is so into it he hits the symbol off the stand
peaks to the feeling of loneliness and disconnection one can feel from being surrounded by people who do not truly understand you. The lyrics suggest that the speaker is facing a lot of internal conflicts, yet already knows that the start is the end, potentially suggesting that despite the internal struggle, there is nothing that can be done to change the current situation. The speaker is not able to properly communicate with those around them, leading to feelings of unease and anxiety. The instrumentals used in the song further emphasise the sense of disconnection, with a melancholic melody suggestive of the overall feeling of helplessness. The song thus speaks to a feeling of alienation due to being unable to effectively communicate and express oneself, and ultimately coming to terms with the fact that goodbye might be the only solution.
greatest comment ive ever read
@@jewelss thanks
i feel like this sense of alienation is transmitted even better in the ep version of the song, or rather clearer, with the mixed voices that seem to be overwhelming the instruments and what i believe to be the explosion that results from being saturated at the end with the drumming and all of instruments, the drumming throughout the song being just streams of thought and the instruments accompanying them the outside world.
Jesus christ, I dont think ive seen anything better than when the drummer starts hammering, and everybody starts screaming. You can see the breakdown on their faces.
The greatest math rock band of all time.
Guys i made the slowed reverb version of this song. Will appreciate if you check it out. Tysm!
It's minus degree here -
This was the first song I heard from toe, and was blown away. I made myself a goal to see them live - 7 years later they came to my home city (Dublin) and I was up the front, could reach out and touch them. When they played Goodbye, it was probably one of the most mindblowing things I''d even seen and heard. What an amazing experience.
I saw them live last month and I felt the same. When they played Goodbye, it was so surreal. I had my eyes closed nearly the whole time and was just feeling it.
So guys how loud doi they play exactly
i saw them last year and i was so close to the stage hirokazu was kicking me for the whole show. i also got his pick and i keep it in my wallet now
Lucky you
Same here mate. I first heard them around 8 years ago. They blow my mind.
Toe is the kinda band that makes life-saving music for anyone struggling to live. That's their magic and gift.
Look at all these different beautiful countries coming together in this comment section. Music truly is the great unifier.
Japan still makes great with music without an international flavour hypothetically speaking does that make Japan racist just a thought
Eddie Moore what?
You're right mate. Greetings from Peru.
Truly awesome!
@@eddiemoore6216 stop this racist bullshit and go fuck yourself
This song actually helped me through depression and grief. Losing a parent was rough but the passion they have in the song is like the passion you use to pass through the pain of tragedy. The last part is the "letting go" of grief finally. And that final rock-out was my goodbye to my parent. This song man, it's my personal theme song.
It's helped me through a breakup that fucked me up big time too. There's just something about this song
Right? It brings people together. Specifically fans of Math Rock. I wouldn't have known about Covet and Chon without Toe.

At 6:40 the drummer and everyone else loses their shit and leaves their body to travel to some awesome astral plane... Asako-san sees this and is trying not to laugh. What an amazing song, pure brilliance.

try I Create - Your Sun is a Destroyer
I watch this video maybe once or twice a year and I always find myself taking away something new. This song has unintentionally become a moment of deep reflection and consistently reminds me that there is hope for the future. I have never seen a better display of passion.
This is the musical embodiment of what you call "Being in the Zone".

Beautiful thought
I've felt very alienated and distant from people for most of my life,
but these melodies and harmonies really bring a sense of calm and warmth to me.
Feels less lonely. Thank you Toe.

this is like communion, I have to re-watch it every few months
for me every few weeks
for me every few days
for me every day
for me every few hours
for me it's confirmation
I watched Toe live in Singapore a few years ago. The lead singer was piss drunk and almost fell off the stage. Everyone seemed high as fuck.
But the moment they started playing- they were so fucking on point! Their last song was 'Goodbye'. Everyone- the crowd, the band, the singer, just went all out! It was incredible, energetic, beyond words! Toe poured their heart and soul into every song and 'Goodbye' was their crescendo.
You only live once, never doubt yourself, never hesitate, go for what you want and do it with love.
If you're sad just listen to this song and enjoy it. After that pick up yourself and continue to enjoy life.
This life is not meant to live happily but to survive and tell everyone your story.
I don't know how about you, people who listen and watch this presentation, but I always cry. Every. Single. Time. Maybe is the passion in every riff and every rythm or the atmosphere or, I don't know, some kind of "magic" in the song that tears me apart. Is not like the studio version, this is something different and I cannot describe it.
This was the first version I watched, and trust me. I understand so much.
Couldn't agree more. You have to feel this song with your heart and don't just listen with your ear.
yes, I feel the same way. This is perfect.
Well, I don't cry, but I always get goosebumps, and laugh a lot during the last crescendo :)
TheAlphazeta09 okay, now I feel less weird about myself. Every time that I get to the ending I start smiling and laughing like crazy
This song transcends time and space. I’m not religious, but I feel deeply spiritual and just...connected to everything when I watch this. This is life, death, love, god, humanity packed into a 6 minute time span. This is the shit that keeps me alive.
I think this is what a religious experience feels like.
Preach
Gahdayum
@@funkbunkmonk Yes....
No joke, I thought I was religious for a long time because of music. I was raised a Catholic and felt incredible whenever they would play the music. I was a toddler lmao so they just lied to me and told me that it was the power of god reaching through to me. I later learned that frisson is not exclusive to religious music; I also learned that there exists much better music than the one sponsored by the church so I had no real reason to stay afterwards.
I saw them in Manila last Nov 2019. One of the best nights of my life. You really gotta watch toe live at least once in your life. It was a night to remember. I hope to see them again after this pandemic is over.
I watch them in 2018 here in Brazil. Amazing.

Like a lot of people, Goodbye was the first song by Toe I listened to. became one of my favorite songs from the moment I stumbled upon It. Likewise, this became my favorite performance of Goodbye from the moment I watched it. Since then Toe became one of my favorite bands and I cant help but come back to this specific performance just to appreciate the sheer skill and talent that each of the band members had offered individually and the genius of the band all together. My mind was blown by the unmatched beauty math rock has the potential for. Although these days im more familiar with the genre, in many ways it still continues to blow my mind at how skillful and talented some of the creators of Math Rock are, and how amazing their music is. I wish for Toe many years of good fortune and well being for having blessed us all with their amazing art :D and that many more people can come to appreciate the genre like I have. Seeing at how this video has 1.1 million views as of the time im writing this, it seems that wish is becoming a reality !
Also, Here's a small list of mathrock bands I have come to enjoy that other folks might want to check out: ( maybe more people can help add to the list ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

2. American football
3. Chinese football (also xD)
4. Free throw
5. Tricot
6. Delta sleep
7. Covet
8. Chon
9. Elephant gym

3. Paranoid void
4. How to count one to ten

Adding the cabs and mass of the fermenting dregs to this list. All crying - the cabs is my funeral song so I thought I'd mention my favourite band of all time
Uchu Conbini is also worth adding to that list.
i love Delta Sleep

Always crack a big smile watching this performance at 6:40 like Asako does, perfect example of the joy of playing live music.

This is their definitive version of Goodbye. Whatta song and whatta band Toe is, Asako-San gave her special sauce making it more mindblowing. And when the band gets pumped is impossible to stand still without freaking out with them
This is legendary. They give themselves completely to the music and their instruments. There's no better feeling in the world than when you truly let go of everything and give yourself to your craft. An inspiring performance to watch.

The song is so unifier and great. For me, one of the best perfomances of a band in the world. The simple english mixing with some simple japanese lyrics and the instruments, it's a nice feeling to hear this song every time, it makes me relaxed and hopeful for a better future, this song is so complex that it's hard to define it, as says the song: "It's more complex than how I used to thought"
