The usage of music in Sonny Boy is ingenious. The show is silent for the most part so that it feels more impactful when there is music. And in sad scenes, instead of using dramatic sad music, the show uses more laid back and calming music to highlight the themes of the show
@@ElOmen22 But he's right though, it's really uncommon in anime to music be completely absent for the sake of atmosphere and aesthetic, and when it DOES kick in, it's one of the most memorable scenes in the show. I haven't seen yet other anime do what Sonny Boy does, and it tells a lot that the music complements the whole scene it's in so perfectly that i can't listen to this song in particular without sheding some tears just remembering that beautiful and melancholic chasing scene with Nagara and Mizuho
I cannot get over this anime. I finished it and cannot articulate what I'm feeling at all. I basically got stunlocked by Sonny Boy and its been almost a week now. I'm glad that there are people still replying, means that people are still finding and watching the show, and that it means so much to them that they search out the ost! I've watched Sonny Boy a few more times since I originally commented and even once entirely in Japanese (I've been studying). Live like Nagara, embrace the world in its most boring days for this is all we got. Each day is a rung of a ladder towards your goals and dreams and if you drift away, you will stop progressing! Which is alright, it happens to everyone now and again, just make sure, one day, to get back on that ladder and keep climbing.
Why do I feel like I've been here before? and this is the exact comment that made me watch Tatami galaxy. So we finally meet again, y'all may not know me, but it was for you that I watched that masterpiece, probably.

This show is a masterpiece that knew how to blend visuals and music to create something beautiful. Sad to to see it end but it'll always be one of my favorites.
I didn't understand every line when I first heard the song, but the opening "Let we aou" hit me. Hearing someone plead to you in two of your languages to see a person again - I don't think you can understand how it feels until you speak two languages. So on that note, indulge me as I give two notes from the translator (me!): The opening line, to me, is so beautiful if you understand both Japanese and English. The first words: "Mou fureta" is like the mental image of two hands' fingers touching. "Let we aou" - Let we is using English's subjects to plead, while aou is a statement - 'should meet.' The Japanese wordplay is so fun. Ou (追う) = to chase, Oou = to hide, Ou (負う) = to carry. E = image, Te = hand, and it looks like the use the onyomi for shadow (影) which is Ei. Three "o" sounds and three "e" sounds.
This song is like a warm blanket to me. It makes me feel something no song has ever done, like there's a person right next to me, radiating warmth and love, so much love. When I listen to this song, all I can hear is "Everything is going to be okay." In such an empathetic tone. It feels so human, each little sound. Thank you, Toe, for making such a special song. I like to have my playlists on shuffle, and this way when I hear this song, it's unexpected. During a stressful day full of work, I have a tradition: when this song randomly comes up, drop everything, and during these 4 minutes just let myself be swallowed by this comforting feeling. It helps me get through the day and gives me hope for the future. I love music, but I never thought a single song could have so much power. If you read a random stranger ranting about their love for a song, kudos to you, haha... I wish you a day full of warmth and love too.
Finished watching Sonny Boy and when I heard the guitar I instantly knew it was Toe. I couldn't believe my favorite band of all time was in an anime as subtle, ephemeral, and brilliant as Sonny Boy but Toe's music is just that. Subtle, ephemeral, and brilliant.
to be honest i freaking loved it. i know no one in this world might agree it. but this is a masterpiece. i love this type of anime. last season odd taxi this season sonny boy.
yeah both OT and SB are anime originals that hit that nice sweet spot but in very different ways. very glad i watched both, odd taxi a bit more popular now but they’ll both probably stay hidden gems overall
No matter how hard Nagara, Nozomi and Mizuho and the other stranded high school students try throughout the series, the conclusion remains the same: "You can never go home again" - Thomas Wolfe
True, the recurring reminder of “you can’t go back (to the old world)” is a metaphor of the childhood/past that was left behind and cannot be brought back again
@@nguyntn9026 I saw this on the top comment on ani-one This really hurts so much that when we grow up we have our duties and responsibilities to do and we have to leave our past self behind. So many friends will not be in touch and we will not even have time to hang out with friends. This is life, you can never go back to the past and you can never change the past but what you can do is move forward and change the future, just as Nagara or Nozomi said(I don't remember who said that). This anime is not very emotional but very impactful.
i feel like a total nostalgic boomer prematurely speaking. even though i'm in my 20s having gone through a lot yet not enough to find accomplishments but we must let go of the past and future equally. escapism is all fine and dandy until your anhedonia sets in. neet it up while you still can but embrace normalcy of working or studying and vice versa. it all boils down to multiple paths. deep yet shallow as it can get.
I was so hyped up after the episode one, but it's hard to say that I enjoyed watching every episode because no matter how I tried to understand, most of it went over my head. Therefore, I'll definitely rewatch this unique anime. It's totally worth it.
One of the animes that are better rewatched in one sitting. I'm enjoying Monogatari more on each rewatch. I'm willing to bet it's the same on Sonny Boy.
Approach it as a surreal piece of art. Surrealism taps into ones ability to find magic and beauty in the uncanny and the unexpected, the need for logical explanation to everything and conventional think will fall by the way side
I think to best experience sonny boy you have to watch it over multiple sittings, and probably multiple times, but that is completely worth it considering what a masterpiece it is
@@Shivam-vr6eh I cannot disagree more. I think Episode 1 was the weakest, and that it only got better from there. But I also felt that it was a masterpiece in philosophical and surrealist anime that made you think long and hard and accept that there are things in life you wont understand.
A true experience watching this, in these times and context. At least, aots, what a jewel!! Also, the entire sequence seems literally composed by Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood, what a ride! On the other hand, everyone talking about escaping the Drift but nobody mentions how RajdhaniGod traveled for 2000 years, watched how Death was created and became a forest to live with the animals forever😭😭😭😭😭
My 2nd favorite character after Mizuho! Also nobody mentions those times Mizuho blushes around Rajdhani, best one was when he said he developed "scoop scope" technique that let him look at something and get the romantic scoop. He turns toward Mizuho in the truck and she blushes and hides behind her cat, lolz! Guess she had a thing for him. Maybe in the real world she'll look up the original Rajdhani.
J-Post/Math-Rock is one of the perfect choices for this series. Sonny Boy, you're a gem. I so wished that they could had also added Toe's "Goodbye" or "Song Silly" and a little of bit of Hyakkei..

I've rewatched this scene so many times. The mixed bag of emotions and thoughts. There are no words to encompass it all. Probably the best visual audio experience I've had to date. Thank you Shingo Natsume.
I watched all of Sonny Boy in one night and after hearing this I think this is now my favorite song. The feeling it emits in contrast to the show is just indescribable, I'd love to watch it again for the first time

I don’t know what it is, but this single piece of music.. has.. affected me. It’s hard to say how, however It’s one of those “I just know” type of things. It’s mysterious, sorrowful, yet cozy, lively full of emotions that words can’t describe nor express. To put it simply. I love it just for existing.

i remember the first time i heard this that exact point was from when a drastic change subsequently occurred in my life.... with time i started to realize the feeling of melancholy left behind this anime ,i was almost depressed but at the same time the last line of this anime when nagara said," Our lives are just beginning. What lies ahead will just take a little bit longer."this inspired me and let me realize we cannot change the past so there's no point in holding onto it, what we are able to do is move ahead and shape our future as much as we want. this realization is very important to me, always being a shut in and after an incident i was totally down.Animes like this incite my heart enough to move on..... cause what I need is just a little bit of courage and enthusiasm....
It happens to me also. So many months have been pass since the show ended and in retrospective, i just improved so much because finally i just accepted my past and start to moving forward. This show and Megalo Box 2, was what i need in those Hard times. I hope you are doing great and remember "Our lives are just beginning" :)
i really loved that most of the moments of this anime had little to no soundtrack really helped set the right atmosphere. And this amazing song wrapped up the ending sequence perfectly. My top anime of 2021 for sure. Praying Shingo Natsume makes more original bombshells like sonny boy in the future
Estoy en las mismas aunque con 20 años, este anime me genero sensaciones fuertes y escuchar esta canción en especifico se siente extraño, en fin, suerte!
I cried so much in the ending... Partly because I didn't want the anime to end and because it makes me feel so sad for some reason that I can't explain.
Imagine running through the multiverse listening to this song - racing past different worlds, holding your lover’s hand asking yourself “is any of this real?”
I know I've been saying it up and down and everywhere but this is by far my favorite anime of 2021 and May perhaps even be one of my all-time favorites This band has definitely changed my life and they are currently musicians that I cannot stop listening to everything they've put out is so good I'm so happy this anime brought me to them
its been a year and EVERY TIME i hear this song, i always miss sonny boy so bad. i don't know how to explain it, but a weird feeling appears when i hear this song. something like melancholy thingy
Sonny Boy was an anime that wasn’t necessarily my favorite anime of this year (it’s Odd Taxi or Ranking of Kings depending on how it ends) but it is the one anime I’ve probably thought of the most. It was definitely a unique viewing experience.

空耳異次元すぎる
In the scene of them running the shadow of their hands touch, I didn't even know it was that in depth.
The usage of music in Sonny Boy is ingenious. The show is silent for the most part so that it feels more impactful when there is music. And in sad scenes, instead of using dramatic sad music, the show uses more laid back and calming music to highlight the themes of the show
Everything in life uses music from television to martial arts. To sports commercials, everything
@@gustavoduarte3507 like they say, sometimes silence is louder
Nozomi's funeral was more painful because of the happy music. What a truly beautiful anime
Me too
Yeah me as well. I'm still trying to piece together why it made me feel the way it did. Stunlocked is a good way to put it
no matter how long you end up stuck on the show, they gifted us a absolute banger of an ost to listen too as we contemplate

I didn't understand every line when I first heard the song, but the opening "Let we aou" hit me. Hearing someone plead to you in two of your languages to see a person again - I don't think you can understand how it feels until you speak two languages.
So on that note, indulge me as I give two notes from the translator (me!):
The opening line, to me, is so beautiful if you understand both Japanese and English. The first words: "Mou fureta" is like the mental image of two hands' fingers touching. "Let we aou" - Let we is using English's subjects to plead, while aou is a statement - 'should meet.'
The Japanese wordplay is so fun. Ou (追う) = to chase, Oou = to hide, Ou (負う) = to carry. E = image, Te = hand, and it looks like the use the onyomi for shadow (影) which is Ei. Three "o" sounds and three "e" sounds.
Thank you for sharing this! This makes the song even better
I didnt really understand shit when you translated the japanese into english
Wow, knowing both languages opens a huge door of understanding.

No matter how hard Nagara, Nozomi and Mizuho and the other stranded high school students try throughout the series, the conclusion remains the same:
"You can never go home again" - Thomas Wolfe
Ok, let's roll the dice
True, the recurring reminder of “you can’t go back (to the old world)” is a metaphor of the childhood/past that was left behind and cannot be brought back again
@@nguyntn9026 I saw this on the top comment on ani-one
This really hurts so much that when we grow up we have our duties and responsibilities to do and we have to leave our past self behind.
So many friends will not be in touch and we will not even have time to hang out with friends.
This is life, you can never go back to the past and you can never change the past but what you can do is move forward and change the future, just as Nagara or Nozomi said(I don't remember who said that).
This anime is not very emotional but very impactful.
Actually the phrase is.something more like: even if you go back, you have changed, and it wont feel like it did before.
It will be.different
this comment feels so heavy, i can't breathe
You better remember when this one plays! One of the greatest scenes of all fiction, elevated ever so higher by this exceptional composition.
i feel like a total nostalgic boomer prematurely speaking. even though i'm in my 20s having gone through a lot yet not enough to find accomplishments but we must let go of the past and future equally. escapism is all fine and dandy until your anhedonia sets in. neet it up while you still can but embrace normalcy of working or studying and vice versa. it all boils down to multiple paths. deep yet shallow as it can get.

I have watched and understood every episode but Episode 1 definitely was the peak. Anime could have been much better with such great premise
Sonny Boy was insane it made me feel so much. I felt like I understood it emotionally more than mentally and damn it was such an amazing show

Rajdhani really was a good guy.
I will miss him.
A film student in my class used this in one of his projects last year and I've been looking for it ever since. Love this :)
J-Post/Math-Rock is one of the perfect choices for this series. Sonny Boy, you're a gem. I so wished that they could had also added Toe's "Goodbye" or "Song Silly" and a little of bit of Hyakkei..
