A royal rescue:Saving the Queen

It was dinner time when we received a call for a king cobra rescue from Koluru, a village 23 km away. King cobras are diurnal snakes that usually settle for the night by twilight. However, this female king cobra had unknowingly ventured too close to a village home. She went unnoticed, but for a dog that started barking and chasing her while she tried desperately to find a space in the cow shed and the firewood shed. With nowhere else to go, she climbed up a flower bush right next to the house. People shone their flashlights out of curiosity, disturbing her. Cornered, she stood her ground by hooding up and scanning around. When we reached, all it took was a gentle pull and a nudge to guide her into a dark space through the pipe and into the bag. Well aware that everyone, including the 'queen' king cobra, deserved to rest, we released her safely in a forest nearby and bid good night. These rescue operations, irrespective of the time or the distance, instil faith among the villagers.
