  • Adventure Oregon - Every spring, Lost Lake mysteriously drains into a giant hole that is likely a lava tube. Where the water goes, nobody knows. Fun location for a day or overnight trip about 75 miles east of Salem Oregon. To get to Lost Lake take Hwy 22 east from Salem to Hwy 20. Continue east on Hwy 20. Just NE of the Potato Hill Snow Park turn left on unmarked road to Lost Lake. The Lost Lake drain hole is not far from the day-use parking area.

    I drive by this often... never noticed it before.
    I can almost guarantee that the freezing and thawing of the water between small cracks in the basalt caused a fissure which then sped the process of erosion down into a lava tube.
    Because the area is absolutely riddled with tubes.

    Just stumbled onto this video. I have never been here, but I did drive close on my way to Sisters and Bend, OR. There is another Lost Lake just north of Mt. Hood accessed by Lost Lake Rd off of Hwy 35 & Hwy 281. It is much more beautiful around there. There are camp grounds and trails around the lake. You can rent row boats and go out on the lake. My wife, soon to be daughter in law, and I did this in August of 2013. We got some great pictures of Mt. Hood from on the water.

    I'm thinking that water found the entrance of an ancient lava tube and it is acting like a pipeline to another part of the same network, perhaps later emerging as a spring or series of springs at some distant and lower altitude location.

    All I could think was plug it up. A 2inch steel plate should last a few decades. As a young teen, I dammed up a small creek; I did where the banks were highest. 3weeks later I went back, I had flooded the entire area. I created maybe 100 acre pond that was 3ft deep. It's been 30years. I should Google Earth the Area. lol .

Draining possibly into a larger casym underground. it'd be quite interesting to find out how long the lake has been there for and see if my therory is right , without knowing the previous or it's original size u could say, it's not a lost lake, really it's a recycling body of water feeding itself down the gurgler, then replenishing the bigger body of water so unto never actually truly disappear, just to continue it's mysterious flow, on "Mumma natures Rock watercourse" & conveyor belt

    • @biohazard_613
      @biohazard_613 3 года назад

      @@TheDeanoc69 it is sort of true. The lake sits over a partially collapsed lava tube. It is the drainage into the collapsed lava tube that creates the underground river. There are 2 other holes there that I know of. They are quite a bit smaller and slightly higher in elevation so they would be completely dry when the lake is this low. Also, while it is constantly draining, the winter and spring rains followed by the snow melt are sufficient enough keep it pretty full most of the year. Most years it’s still pretty much a lake up until July when it starts getting dry and the inflow can’t keep up with the outflow. I live 45-50 minutes from there and I stop there on my way to visit relatives in Sisters, Or all the time.
