I swam at the pool 3 years ago and it is s cold but it was the 4th of July and I would do it again. Fun with family 2 mile hike so worth it. Be safe. Hike in and no diving. It is so worth it !!

The temperature was probably similar when a high school friend and I decided to jump into a beautiful pool below a culvert under the road in Breckenridge, Colorado. This was mid May when the spring snow run off was getting underway. Me, a scrawny 6' and 145 lbs. probably left scratch marks in the rocks clawing my way out, and my overweight friend swam around like a polar bear!! It probably took two hours for a certain part of my male anatomy to come out of hiding after that!!!
I have passed by the turnoff countless times when I was a truck driver. I always wanted to stop and see it. Thanks for all the advice, now I'll be prepared for the hike.
I've watched a few of your videos Matt and they are very professional; both sound track, and lighting... The overall "tightness" of the video presentation deserves an award or two
Thank you very much. I get a kick out of making these as good as I can. Can't win an award by being a random dude on RUclips. Maybe I will find a better place to get a video out one day.
I just stuck my foot in there and was immediately in pain. Great job explaining this as most ppl I asked there had NO IDEA it was part of the Blue River... I looked it up later as I had been there before to see waterfalls and was very confused.
I've done full immersion in water probably only slightly warmer, and it's the oddest sensation. It feels like your life is being pulled out of you. I didn't stay more than a second.
I've been in the Blue Pool. It is so much colder than I could have imagined, but it was also very refreshing on the long mountain bike ride all the way down the MRT. Thanks for sharing!
@@MattCookOregon It was probably one of my all time favorite mountain bike rides! And would definitely make a great video. I would have brought my dogs, but my puppy could def get into trouble. Blindly heading down the trail would have been a very stressful mistake.
The stats of how long the average adult can survive in 40 degree water are impressive for their brevity. Because the pool is not a normal part of a river the rocks are very rough and some are rather loose. When the valley is 98, the mountain streams and lakes are wonderful, just have a bit of sense. I once dove into a narrow rock trough carrying glacial melt in Glacier Park. I was SO hot and sweaty from the hike up with full pack... I swear I came out faster than I went in, like a spawning salmon jumping up a waterfall: I have no idea how I did it.

Blue Pool is absolutely amazing! Such a spectacular site to see. I carefully climbed down and slowly dipped in the water. I did not completely submerge myself in the water. My feet pretty much went numb when I stepped in.
It is a nice one. Somehow I made it look not crowded, which usually isn't accurate. I just dipped in Spring Creek which is same temp, though only 1 foot deep, felt like icing my foot which was nice.

Thats how I felt in the upper Kalama. It will chill you to the bone on a 100° day. I don't get in it any more. Upper Lewis is pretty cold too. Cold water lake is pretty cool. We kayaked it last summer, but it never crossed my mind to get in the water. Its kind of scary. I would be paddling along and all the sudden see bubbles coming up from the bottom in various places. It brought to mind that lake that burped toxic gasses and killed every person and animal around it. It was a fun ride but I probably will not be going back out on it.

There’s Bagby Hot Springs up on the Collawash River and Austin Hot Springs on the Clackamas River above Estacada. You can’t get up there now because the highway is blocked off due to the September fires.
Thank you John. It is nice to hear people are enjoying the videos. Also nice to see that a 3 year old video is still of value. I try to make these stand the test of time.
I respect being thoughtful and properly prepared for any trip out doors in Oregon. I'm from Alaska and have been outside in inclement weather plenty of times, but I have to say I would be alot more worried in Oregon's thick forests. Long before sunset you could find yourself out of luck and unable to navigate even well groomed trails in those areas and that makes prep essential in my book 💯👍🏾
I'm so glad you left a comment on my "Shaky-cam" birding hours around Klamath Falls! It made me find your channel... This video is wonderfully filmed, and filled with good advice. Not that everyone is able to take such advice at heart, but you did try. I will continue look through your content.
Awesome thank you. I really like finding smaller creators. The bigger ones are too focused on money for me. I did try to have a positive impact on Blue Pool with this video. Many complain that social media ruined this place. I think social media could have a much better impact with a little education added in.
Hi Matt! Great video- beautiful! Thanks for the history and warnings! Very interesting how this pool was formed and how the water stays so cold! 👍👍👍🌲🌲🌲
@@MattCookOregon I’m sure your video will help get the word out! Excellent explanation of the 10 essentials and why they are needed. Its so important to have them, either to help yourself, or someone else! 👍👍👍
@@MattCookOregon haha love your content man super informative! I might actually start vlogging with an iphone 12 mini and some moment lenses once I get my hands on that thing. The video quality is insaaane!
A huge tourist attraction and worth the hike in. Beautiful presentation, and very much needed. How to get this out to visitors to prevent tragedy is a good question. The local Forest Service and County should prepare a plaque at the location and trail head for advice. Thank you!
Thank you! With this new generation we got to get weird for anyone to remember anything. Maybe a big crash test dummy hanging from a tree at the trailhead with some warning signs!
What a beautiful pool to hiking to. Loved the way you did this video with the warning to others to be safe when out in the wilderness. So happy I saw your name on a friend's channel so that we could connect.
Thanks Kathy. I had a big theme of safety as this spot is one of the state's most common emergency rescue calls. This would be a good one to visit when in Oregon.
Sounds like a good plan. We're having a lot of avalanche issues here in Colorado and 4 deaths, so the beacon is a good idea. I am older and constantly traveling in remote areas without cell service so having that Garmin is essential. We also carry all the items you mentioned in your video because of where we hike and explore. This was an important message that you gave to other hikers who may not carry these safety items. Let's hope they pay attention and take your advice!!!!!
This is a good video with good information. Too many people undertake visits to wilderness areas with unrealistic expectations. I used to Iive near the start of the Appalachian Trail. When people would get lost, we worked with search and rescue. I had two back-n-tan coonhounds and three Rotties. The hounds could follow a scent and the Rotties could tree a bear if we met one. A surprising number of people we found had the idea that their trip to the Appalachian trail would be like watching Discovery Channel from the couch.
Yes the idea of wilderness is so glamorous. I may be a little guilty there at times in videos where I show how pretty it is and don't always talk about preparation and dangers. Thanks for a story from somewhere so far from me. Now I want to visit, its just like discovery channel right?
One more note: It would be a very smart move to keep a portable VHF/UHF ham radio on hand when going into places like this. Getting your ham license is NOT expensive and well worth the time to get it. My radios have been good comfort to have when I've operated in places no cell tower could ever reach, but with ham radio repeaters all over the place, I've been able to get help if I ever needed it simply by having the radio on hand.
I have ran into quite a few people out there using ham radios. It seems like a fun hobby in itself. I saw a guy on top of a peak, communicating with someone on top of another very far away peak.
Hey Matt, great video. As a born and bread Oregonian I can honestly say I've never heard of this place and I grew up all over the state. Very cool to learn of and I shall check it out. Thanks for the info~ it was all good
Thanks so much! Oregon adventures is all I do so stay tuned. Some of my videos have been at the request of comments so let me know if you want to see anything specific.
Seeing the dog in the video reminds me of a point I don't think you mentioned: bringing pets to dangerous places, unless they have *perfect* recall and stop training, is very dangerous to them and to you
Sir, your videos have matured in composition and editing. Love what you’re doing and I always look forward to your next upload. Thanks for posting. Cheers!
Very pretty place, Matt! I was curious to see the blue-to-not-blue transition into the river. Is it fairly gradual, or a sudden shift to brown and murky? Or (I guess I should have left this option) does it stay just nice and crystal clear but not deep enough to look as blue?
Yeah I think it goes to normal river color pretty quick. There is another clear pool miles up the river, so it gets blue there, then loses the blue when it flows, then gets blue again after going underground.
Some people are so not in their right mind, I would never swim or jump into a place like this.Thank God I don't swim right mind would ever jump or swim in this place. Thank God I don'
Knowing my children's ability to hike 7 miles a day would you recommend children stay away from the blue pool hike? Or do you think it's doable with caution around the cliff's and water?
I do recommend this. It is an amazing sight. Especially on a sunny day when the water gets even bluer than in the video. Way under 7 miles. Pretty easy hike. I just stress safety since so many people have been careless and got into trouble.
Thank you. Safety is number one especially when my children are along. I live in western Washington this sounds like a fun summer trip. Thank you again.
@@kevinfoster1138 oh nice. Belknap is a nice place to stay there. Or Clear Lake cabins/camping. It's cool to see clear lake, sahalie falls, then blue pool, all part of the same river
I'm hooked on your videos now. It's great to see quality videos on my local home land. I'd love to see you do a video on quartzville and the history of the mining history of the area. Same with Sharp's creek near Bohemia mountain. Yachats is great on the coast, cape perpetua is a amazing area with thor's well very near by and huge trees right in land and amazing tide pools and geological features everywhere.
Thank you very much. I was going to say on the other comment, I did do a blue pool video! Also did a very long one on Bohemia, and a shorter one on Thor's Well. Many places to do still as you say. Most my mining video plans were delayed due to the fires, which hit a lot of the good old mining sites, hopefully I can check some out soon and see the damage. My video uploads will be on hold for a month or two because I am working on another full length movie. I did one on Newberry last year, definitely check it out if you haven't. This year it will be an hour long doc about all of our lighthouses. I am very excited on this project and it should be out this summer.
Lots of people going to these spots these days we have a spot a mile down the road from me . Locals usto go but not it is to packed with people .we all knew not to go in the watter untill late August beacus it is all fed by snow melt . Every year someone ends up losing their life tragically and we have lots of spots like this in WA as I know u guys do in OR .it is important for people to do their research and to remember to be respectful and safe/ prepared thanks for this vid . I lived off 62 many years ago I miss the OR coast line
@@MattCookOregon that's a fact we had a toddler in a life jacket float down the river 2 years back that parents thought the life jacket would keep the kid safe but the current cared the poor kid to it's death then last summer someone caught the forest on fire with thair camp fire .comin science is a dieing thing these days .
Good call. I guess that isn't part of the 10 essentials? Unless you include that in first aid. I actually have two! One built into my backpack, and one part of a thermometer/compass item.
@@MattCookOregon Thanks, people often die close to trails but nobody can hear them as the voice quickly gives out.! Otherwise, its a great list. Related to topic: I keep a couple of self-striking road flares in my car. They burn bright red at 1500 degrees and can start a fire even in the rain. Oh, and Baby-wipes because TP just does not hold up outdoors.
I wanted to put out some responsible info with a blue pool video, as most videos are just people jumping off the cliffs. This place has a serious problem. Flares are solid. I had noticed mine was like 10 years expired so I threw it in the fire recently (it seemed to still work). I have to go re up on those.
I think because whistles are only required for boaters, never thought about hikers either. I kayak and I have a whistle in my vest along with everything I would need to survive a night.
Very informative video.I will say I expected a video of a geological oddity with anomalous characteristics. The tips the presenter provides are excellent and he did a fantastic job, very thorough.Instead of making it sound "Blue Pond" specific he should make it a general "How to survive and not die in the outdoors."
Thank you. Most my other videos are geologic so that would make sense. I wanted to do something different. I was also motivated by search and rescue friends talking about how much they get called there. I guess the blue pool is the eye candy to trick people into getting a safety lesson.
Every spring we hear of drownings in local rivers. I'm at the north end of the Willamette Valley. Usually people not from the area. That first few hot days and folks head to the nearest water. They dive on in looking for a little cool relief and end up in an arctic ice bath. Snow melt is icy cold. Some of our waterways are ice cold all summer long because tv hey come from the mountain snow. Some folks gasp when their body is shocked like that. Not good if you're underwater. Then brother tries to save him, and then dad goes in, too, and they all end up being lost. Every year people die. Even with signs warning of exactly what it can do to your body.
Very true. Jump in the water sounds like an easy idea but people need to think about these things a little. Our rivers have just as many dangers too. Personally I never float unless I know the river like the back of my hand or I am with a guide. I might make a river safety video at some point.
It is interesting that you don't mention the satellite-based rescue devices that summon help immediately without the wait for someone to hike back to the TH.
Good thought. That would be grouped in with gps devices. However, the people I am speaking to don't bring anything, nearly every rescue here has needed a hike back to the trailhead.
@@MattCookOregon That certainly speaks to the "it can't happen to me"/"of course I'm going to live forever" youth mentality in our society. As a licensed pilot with a whole lot of hours, I never could bring myself to adopt that kind of silliness. I began to carry a rescue device when they first came out, in the style of a 1lb brick. It just seemed like common sense to me. Oh yeah, I think I just hit on it. Common sense is not too common.
wow just found your channel and all your contents are amazing! can't believe you still have dislikes. Thanks so much for sharing all the nature and views.hopefully i can visit Oregon in near future!
Thank you very much! This channel is full of good destinations. It is also nice to learn a bit before going somewhere so you know what you are looking at.
Last summer I went cliff jumping here with some of my friends. They brought wet suits… I did not. Big mistake. When I hit the water, my brain didn’t quite understand what was happening. As I began to swim towards the exit point, the effects started to become clear. My whole body was going numb. I was joking to my buddies how warm the water was as I swam closer and closer to safety, but when I got there I could hardly breathe.
Ive done a backflip off the 60 footer at Blue Pool, don't think I would do it again though. Wetsuit is definitely crucial. Its tough to spot your landing due to how clear the water is.
Thank you very much! The drone is DJI spark. A very cheap and small drone. If I got a new one I would go with DJI mavic air 2. But I don't drone all that much to justify buying another. So many places I would love to fly are illegal. So I mostly just fly from the parking lot to get a big landscape shot.
Someone should build a sweat lodge off to the side you know just the mud sweat with a few big thick things on top all wet and steamy with a nice fire inside some heavy rocks and people can sit around and smoke pot and jump in the pool when they get too hot
Cool place but watching your dog was as interesting as the hike. I have a Malamute and he is super cool like that. I adventure with a pre-packed survival pack I could stay out for a week with if I had to.

There’s Bagby Hot Springs up on the Collawash River and Austin Hot Springs on the Clackamas River above Estacada. You can’t get up there now because the highway is blocked off due to the September fires.
@@jasoncordill2658 Those would be good. I also have to wait out covid for the crowded hot springs.
@@MattCookOregon That’s true. It does get pretty packed up there. They’re popular spots
I thought that geothermal heating relied on underground always being warm. 🤷♀️
At a geothermal vent sure. But those are much more rare than cold water underground.
@@MattCookOregon huh I was told that you could just dig underground anywhere and that will give you geothermal heating
Oh gotcha. Yeah if you dig deep enough its everywhere, but that can be real deep.
@@MattCookOregon ah that makes sense
This should be a PSA. As someone who used to hike, many points are just common sense and can be used regardless of location.
It basically is a PSA and common sense! But much needed with how much trouble people get into.
Amazing info about the Oregon Territory!
Thank you! Good to play it safe.
a gentleman scholar outdoorsman thanks for your wonderful oregon wilderness guide I try to avoid venturing too far from any highway here.
Thank you John. It is nice to hear people are enjoying the videos. Also nice to see that a 3 year old video is still of value. I try to make these stand the test of time.
Very informative. Awesome place to visit. As long as safety first.😎✌️
Thank you. It is kind of a PSA as the rescue teams get called there a lot.
Prepare and adapt, you gotta. Really I always think of Alaska as a much more wild place. I have only been once as a kid though.
Thanks Jennifer! I keep hearing about rescues here and wanted to help.
@@MattCookOregon I’m sure your video will help get the word out! Excellent explanation of the 10 essentials and why they are needed. Its so important to have them, either to help yourself, or someone else! 👍👍👍
Great video! Throughly enjoyed it. Been here a few times dark and early to enjoy the serenity of the plae
Thank you. I think I found you when researching for this video. Still jealous of that a7iii lol.
@@MattCookOregon haha love your content man super informative! I might actually start vlogging with an iphone 12 mini and some moment lenses once I get my hands on that thing. The video quality is insaaane!
For all the talk of dying this is a very calming video
Ha I like that. I wasn't trying to scare people!
My favorite little hike!
Nice. I like any part of that McKenzie River Trail.
Hello fellow Oregonian! I got to swim in this couple years ago, week before some guy had to be air lifted out after his muscles siezed up from cold
Welcome. I swam in Clear Lake and that was just about as cold. I wouldn't do it without a wet suit.
@@MattCookOregon lolol yas!!! My family took me there as a kid, SO COLD!! so so pretty tho. What a pretty pocket of the world we live in💛💪
A huge tourist attraction and worth the hike in.
@@MattCookOregon Die-hard adventurists may try to prove the dummy wrong... funny, but... a nice warning post is appropriate...
This would be a good one to visit when in Oregon.
dunno why youtube recommended this video from another continent, but it was quite cool and helpful anyway. 😁
That is awesome they are finally recommending me more. Maybe you like clear blue water, or not dying.
I liked your list of 10 items to carry with you on hikes. I would add one item which is the Garmin InReach device that has an emergency
For sure I would include that in gps/maps. I do want to get a garmin device with gps and avalanche beacon.
Cool video! I'm in the Rogue Valley and love learning about nearby awesome. 😍
Thank you. Thats a cool area too. I would love to do a video rafting the Rogue or doing the river trail.
Is there any currents or under water caves in Blue Pool?
Not that I know of. Can't say I have ever swam in it. I did dive around in Clear Lake with a wet suit which was awesome.
Excellent video and commentary!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching.
Great production
Thank you!
Amazing Blue Pool, you have made a great filmed for us, thank you so much.
Thank you Blue Elephant!
Dude!
I live so damn close, camped @ Clear Lake multiple times, never heard of this place.
That is surprising. Time to go!
@@MattCookOregon
💯 agree
@@MattCookOregon - Hi Matt - It is fun! I highly recommend it to all!
I'm really enjoying binging your content. The style is kind of like an NPR documentary from my childhood. Very soothing. :D
Thank you! I try to bring my own thing to youtube and have a lot of fun with that.
Tons of footage must have gone into this! Nice work man
Funny seeing you here! Always like 4 hours of footage for me. Thanks John.
Hey Matt, great video. As a born and bread Oregonian I can honestly say I've never heard of this place and I grew up all over the state. Very cool to learn of and I shall check it out. Thanks for the info~ it was all good
Thank you. Hopefully you get to check it out. Sunny days get the best water colors.
Great video, excellent information. I've never hiked in to Blue Pool and did not realize how treacherous it was.
Thanks man. Another spot ruined by Matt Cook Oregon!
Love your videos. I’m new to OR and not knowing much about some hikes/destinations prevents me from exploring as much as I want to
Thanks so much! Oregon adventures is all I do so stay tuned. Some of my videos have been at the request of comments so let me know if you want to see anything specific.
Is the water safe to drink? Love how clear it is!
I would say it is too far from the source to try drinking. Water comes from clear lake which I def wouldn't drink.
Seeing the dog in the video reminds me of a point I don't think you mentioned: bringing pets to dangerous places, unless they have *perfect* recall and stop training, is very dangerous to them and to you
True. Too many things to mention in a video you have to pick and choose. I was not a fan of off leash dogs at the cliffs of silver falls.
Sir, your videos have matured in composition and editing. Love what you’re doing and I always look forward to your next upload. Thanks for posting. Cheers!
Thank you! I am on a journey to just keep getting better. Ones where I can do something a little different like this help the creativity flow.
Cool thanks work for a forestry company in Oregon been allover never heard of it.
Thank you. I work with a couple forestry companies and do drone videos for them. If you ever need one hit me up.
Gorgeous dog!
Thank you! She is a good buddy and appears in most videos.
Such a beautiful place! I hope to finally go there this summer. This video is really informative & helpful. Thanks!
Thank you. I am very surprised you haven't been.
Very pretty place, Matt! I was curious to see the blue-to-not-blue transition into the river. Is it fairly gradual, or a sudden shift to brown and murky? Or (I guess I should have left this option) does it stay just nice and crystal clear but not deep enough to look as blue?
Haha tha latter McKenzie river is so clear everywhere
Wonderful voice and beautiful video. Very inspiring editing, content and narration skills.
Thank you so much! The voice comment helps. I used to be very afraid to speak.
I wish I could go there...looks absolutely beautiful ❤️
Make it happen!
Blue hole just outside Santa Rosa NM. 100ft across 90ft deep, blue water and a river flows out of it. How many can there be?
We got at least 3 in Oregon!
This is a pretty spot! Went right by it 7 years ago when I was mountain biking the McKenzie River trail have not been back there since.
It is nice. Mountain biking the river trail, that sounds like a good video.
Wow this is gorgeous! 💜 I wanna go here, the river is gorgeous
It is so nice. I am glad some people didn't get scared by the video.
Thank you, a place I’d love to visit sometime
Glad you enjoyed! It is a relaxing visit. On a weekday. Weekends are a bit crowded.
Thanks for the video! We're visiting blue pool in the next few weeks, so this was very informative and helpful! Didnt realize that it was that cold!
Thank you. Very cool hope you enjoy. Try a weekday or morning otherwise it will be very crowded.
There are always going to be people getting into trouble in the water. Number one prevention method is good parenting!
I was like 20 min away from that place today ima check it out next time I'm there . Thanks for the video!
Thank you. Hope you enjoy. Go on a nice sunny day for the best blue water colors.
What are a couple great places to visit but also swim around Portland? I am going in June!!!!!!
Sorry I don't hang around Portland much. I recommend anywhere featured on this channel.
I did not notice what is often THE most important survival item: a whistle .
@@MattCookOregon Well played sir.
Looks like Devils well were I come from.
Never heard of it! I do like most landmarks named after the devil's.
Great information on safety.
Drugs and alcohol don't mix well with rugged terrain but mankind will never change.
Thank you Jim. No probably best to keep the drinks at home eh.
Wow scary. Sounds like you had some backup incase things went wrong.
Is this close to lost lake? The one that drains every winter into lava tubes?
We have a few lost Lakes but that does sound like the one down the road from this.
Has anyone tried to rappel down the side? At least there would be a way to get the person back up.
Search and rescue does all the time!
Ive done a backflip off the 60 footer at Blue Pool, don't think I would do it again though. Wetsuit is definitely crucial. Its tough to spot your landing due to how clear the water is.
I bet that was rad. I am hoping this video helps as rescue crews get called there way too much.
I don't know if you will see this Rob, but what would you recommend as a better place to cliff dive?
@@jeremyn4397 I saw it. Steelhead Falls is alright, also been jumping off a bridge in Bend Oregon
Well done! I enjoyed the video😊
Thanks Steve!
Nice work Matt! Another spot added to my must visit list. 👍
Thank you. Go early and avoid the crowds!
Another great video with vital information for visitors.
I love your drone shots. What kind do you have?.
Take care!
Drugs and super cold water hmm.....
Cool place but watching your dog was as interesting as the hike. I have a Malamute and he is super cool like that. I adventure with a pre-packed survival pack I could stay out for a week with if I had to.
That is the way to go. Worst case you get some extra workout from the weight. I am glad you enjoyed my wolf friend. She appears in almost every video.
This is so good.
Thanks dad!
Another great travel-blog. The missing woman with health issues at 2:30 was found deceased after she had been missing for 6 months, in Oct 2020.
