    Such a beautiful and interesting film, I don’t understand how OPB hasn’t snatched you up yet. I’ve been out on Clear Lake a few times over the decades but never really understood how it was formed or why those trees were down there, nor did I know about the spring. Fascinating information and gorgeous videography. Thanks for making these Matt, you’re doing Oregon a great service.

    I loved that Lake! I was born and raised in Oregon, I started Scuba Diving in 1967 before a certification was required in Oregon. I dove in Clear Lake in the early 70's. Back then we didn't have drysuits we only used Wetsuits with "spine pads" and yes, it was dang cold!!! But I would not trade the experience for any warmer place...... Love this vid!! Brings back many memories!! Thanks

      Thank you very much. I am glad I had a dry suit for this. Though a scuba tank would have been nice to go deep. I was thinking of doing something similar at Waldo Lake, but that big fire might delay that plan a year.

    • @just-a-thought4u
      @just-a-thought4u 2 года назад

      Thanks for your response, I agree Waldo Lake would be awesome. I also dove in Woahink Lake, South of Florence, Oregon. There are train cars at the bottom, or I should say there was, they were slowly sinking into the sand.
      If you park in the turnoff at Hwy 101 facing the lake, to your right there used to be a tree laying from the bank into the water. Just about 30ft from the end of the tree on the bottom was a train car.
      The history on how it got there is interesting.

    This is great 👍 I've gone here since I was a little kid. Born in Corvallis Oregon. My relatives would go on what we called " the guys outting" one trip my grandfather caught a trout and was reeling it in and a osprey swooped down and dove into the water only about 10ft away from our row boat, stealing his fish right in front of him lol 😆 it was the craziest thing I've ever seen while fishing lol. I really enjoyed your video. You should do more videos on the surrounding areas like the blue pool and fish lake. I went to fish lake and found hundreds of thousands of tadpoles in a little creek. The rest of the lake disappears from draining into the ground. It's fun to hike around there.

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  3 года назад

      Thanks for checking out some videos Ben. I think that Osprey has a nice home at the lake as I always see them there. That is a good area, looks like you saw the Bluepool video, I did a sahalie falls one too but it is a bit old. At this point I am drawn towards videos that can dive into good information like science and history. I got lots of ideas in the works but for the next month I am working on a bigger video. Absolutely stunning scenery, and you did an amazing job with the production of this video! I have lived in Arizona for 37 years and am literally and figuratively burned out on the desert, and I am hoping to relocate to the PNW--I grew up in Missouri and have decided I am ready for the seasons again (just not in the Midwest). As we say down here, in Phoenix and the surrounding cities anyway, we have two seasons: warm and hot (and I mean REALLY hot). I may end up in NW Montana or Northern Idaho (have friends there and am licensed to work there), but I will be sure to explore all that Oregon has to offer, also, including Clear Lake. Just subscribed so I look forward to watching what you have produced in the past and eagerly await what you do in the future--you really have a gift!

    Great video. Beautiful scenes. Very informative. This is one of 11 lakes in Oregon that are named Clear Lake. It's one of those names like Deer Creek or Bear Creek or Mill Creek- very common. It's not the altitude so much that accounts for the cold temperature, it's more that the "snow melt filtered through lava rocks" goes underground and doesn't warm up much before welling from the springs in the bottom of the lake. There are wild rainbow trout there too.

Like, can I bring my own canoe? How much are the cabin rentals? And other questions of the kind. Beautiful, Matt. Wonderful shots of the Osprey. Thanks for bringing this one to us.

      Thanks man. Ya I am getting slower with uploads every time. I don't get much joy out of trying to record everything from a single day. So more extensive videos are the plan but they take way longer. Def bring your own boat as long as no motor! Cabins vary on size but something like 70-150$. The campground is much cheaper.

    Went to Clear Lake for the New Year, the resort is open into the winter now too. The water is so clear, even on video it doesn't quite convey the feeling of staring into the turquoise lake. The exit ramp was a bit icy though, so have traction tires or chains. Came across a wolf getting some water while on the lake trail (Never got confirmation from the FS that I reported it too, but i'm standing by it.) Also saw a coyote near Little Nash, but those things are downright adorable.

      Hey thanks for that. Most people do Portland but big cities are not my thing. I would say bend as that is right in the center, can hit clear lake, painted hills, smith rock, much more. Most my favorite mountain spots are not accessible in spring due to snow on roads. Still lots to see in spring. I think there are fun destinations all over the state so can't go wrong, just stay near what you are hoping to see. Roseburg is a cheaper and not so well known a good home base to see the coast to the west, then go east for waterfalls and crarer lake. Well I am writing an essay at this point let me know if you have questions.

    Lost Lake is northwest of Clear Lake on Highway-20. It disappears every Summer because of 2 lava tubes in the lakebed. Oregon State University scientists wanted to know where the water goes, so they put radioactive isotopes in the lava tubes, and they detected them 6 years later in Clear Lake. 6 years! That is one huge system of volcanic tunnels! It is some of the best water in the world. It's right up there with glacial water, and maybe even better. In ancient times, Lost Lake was called Lake Nostos. It meant "the Lake of Knowledge". The local legend is that it was where Snow White and Prince Charming were married 10,800 years ago. Snow White lived in Albany. Alba is Latin for white. Her first name was Snow. Her last name was White. The Charming castle was at the confluence of the Santiam Rivers east of Sweethome, Oregon at the edge of Foster Reservoir.
