I bought a fake Greeny Les Paul - Not an actual Gibson/Epiphone

  • I bought a fake Chinese Les Paul guitar to satisfy my need for a real Gibson Greeny model! This one came stock with a relic light nitro finish and is actually pretty good! Price is disclosed toward the end of the video. A guitar like this from Gibson would cost well over $10,000.

I have this same Chibson replica. I changed out all the electronics and put Seymour Duncan Antiquities in it. Put reliced bridge and stop bar piece on it. Changed out the tuners to reliced Grovers and actually did more relicing to the body. Plays like dream. As well as any Gibson I have. It was a labor of love and now a prized possession!

Looking forward to part two. You probably know this, but just in case.. Dont forget to flip the neck pickup magnet or reverse the wiring on that pickup (not just turn the neck pickup around). I have several of my guitars including a 3 pickup Les Paul, set up with out of phase options and its worth doing.. and then spending time adjusting the pickup poles and heights which helps add (or reduce) emphasis of the out of phase tone. You can really dial it in, by doing this and of course dialing back the vol a little on one pickup. Then additionally if you go for say a 47uf cap on the neck you can get some Boston like cocked wah tones to!! Fun fun fun! :)

I've had a Chibson for a few years. I don't think it's as nice or as good quality as this Greenie but, I finally got around to doing a fret level, re-crown and polish yesterday. That's improved it quite a bit. I also have some locking tuners, and quality pups lying around, that I'm going to fit at some point. It's never going to be my #1 but, it'll be fine as a practice/backup guitar. I think the quality of Chibsons have generally improved a bit in the few years since I bought mine. Your Greenie really does sound good 👍

I went to your channel and gave it a listen. Then I listened to a bunch more videos. You nailed it! That Gibson Les Paul Tribute Gold Top you have? Best guitar tone in your arsenal. I caught that one in your Boys Are Back In Town live video from 2020. I could tell the playing on the solos was you, not because of imperfections, but style choices you made during them! For goodness' sake, when you played Free's All Right Now, I thought "he's playing with the record and his guitar is turned down." But no, because when you went to do the high part and nailed, and I do mean flawlessly, the bends I was convinced I was right until you changed up the way it was played ever so slightly. Then when you went into the open A, tonally it differs because he plays a different shape using the A note on the lowest string rather than adding the B and E strings at the 5th fret. He plays it kind of like a G shape moved up 2 frets and uses the lower strings. But that said, it's the ONLY way I could tell it was you! And that's cool, because it's a choice of style and preference and sets you apart as an artist and player.
Final Countdown, nailed it! Boys are Back, nailed it! Hotel CA, nailed it! Need I go on? Your Chibson sounds a ton better than the one in this video. It's attack is harsh and the notes have no tonal variation. It's typical cheap p'ups and pots that sound lifeless. That's coming from a guy who has four authentic Les Paul guitars. Rock on!

    • @stevegardiner8473
      @stevegardiner8473 Год назад +1

@@jimwoodard64 Wow. Thank you so much for your kind comments. I generally only hear (and wince at) the imperfections in my playing, with the odd, occasional exception 😁. You seem far more knowledgeable about guitars and music than myself. I just enjoy playing, and if someone else gets something from it also, that's a huge bonus.
I'd actually commented on your 'Freebird' video a couple of weeks ago. It's takes some cojones to launch into something like that, unrehearsed. Is it your lead vocal on 'Wanted dead or alive'? Great job. Subbed to your channel.
      Thanks again.

They have certainly come a majorly long way since I bought my first chibby about 11 years ago! Back then the cutaway was always off & the hardware placement was always off a bit too. You could expect non potted pickups, crappy tuners & an Epiphone style bridge with split screw top studs. I’ve purchased several over the years & in the last 5 years or so they’ve really got the body shape & hardware placement down pretty good, some even come with fret nibs. Most sellers will give you a well cut bone nut & a US “style” Nashville or “ABR-1” bridge upon request. But now they offer nitro? No way! I’m assuming the pups came waxed since you’ve already performed with it? Looks great man!

Yes, part 2 would be cool. Is it an actual flame maple top, or veneer? Even maple cap with flame veneer would be cool like Epi is doing now.
I tried this several years ago with a Chibson White LP Custom. I wanted to use it instead of my real Gibson LPC's, but it was a real POS. Felt like it was made from old pallets..
Even after I changed parts etc., it turned into a beater guitar at best. Fake customs are harder to pull off I guess. Good luck with the upgrades.

Part II? Yes, please. Reversed pickup? Yes, please. Maybe even with a switch or a push/pull pot? And: Documentation of sustain before/after modifications? Yes, please!! 😄
It´d be interesting to see, if any - and if yes - how much improvement is perceived, as a role model or example to imagine, how this maybe could or could not improve "any guitar" made of cheaper components...
In case of the bridge, it also would be interesting to find out, if a better material itself makes the difference? Or just the "firmness" of connection into the body, how well string vibration is translated. You have a great chance here, with your new guitar, to create top notch content for ...... ermmm...............waitforit.............................us! 👍 🙏😄😇

That's a good point, my issue with it is that they don't say "replica" and have the Gibson logo. But really, other than that why is it any different than all the other big companies making very obvious Les Paul type single cuts? Hell, even Slash's iconic 59 was a replica and that's what brought Gibson back to relavant status for hard rock and metal players. It certainly wasn't the quality of Gibson production in the 80s and 90s that did it.

I really dig their take on the 50s neck, but if you have short fingers beware these necks may not be your friend. I found the Gold Top was a bit darker in tone, the burst with the maple top sounded brighter like it should. Def the examples of these i have are pretty nice. But there are so many of these that are not built correctly. Make sure ya do your homework on who you buy these off. But both the older ones I owned weights were about on par with the real Gibson it was replicating. These are heavy guitars.

The real magic of Greeny isn't due to the pickup flip, but a magnet flip. Back in the 80's, Gary Moore handed the guitar to a famous guitar tech named Jol (who later founded a famous high performance guitar company) and told him to "see what made it tick." Jol wrote that the original factory solder was still holding the pickup cover on, which means the magnet flip happened at the factory, rather than as an aftermarket modification.
Peter Green originally claimed that "there was nothing magic about any of his guitars," and that they were all just as they came from the factory. Many years later, after goodness knows how many LSD trips (not to mention all those shock treatments) he changed the story to "I did the modification myself." You can choose to believe whichever story you like, but I'm more inclined to believe the earlier "nothing magic" quote, since the factory solder holding the pickup covers on was still intact.
Either way, nice score on a sweet tribute. I may have to reconsider my earlier position on "Chibsins."😉

Yeah man! Gibson was also making stereo guitars like the ES models that were out of phase with one another. Its not crazy to think in the 50s, one or 2 would get mixed up! There supposedly are a few out there like that

@@SteveSterlacci Don't forget that the Gibson L6-S also came with switching options that included magnetically and electronically out-of-phase humbuckers, with its sealed Bill Lawrence pickups and six-way rotary chicken-head knob. I actually had one back in the late 90's with an ebony fingerboard, and I still regret ever letting it go. It was a very versatile guitar!
Also, JoBo bought a '59 burst a few years ago that also had the neck pickup reversed magnet from the factory. Either somebody at the factory was asleep at the switch,, or they did it on purpose because they figured players might like it.😉

The only issue I have with Chibson is people selling it as fakes. Though, when it comes to LP shapes you can only choose between Gibson (too expansive), Epiphone (not enough choice imo) and Tokai (nice but expansive). If Epiphone would have as many choices as Chibson for a good price then Chibson would die. But I have a feeling it kinda serves Gibson because people tend to buy real Gibson parts to mod these anyways.

You could just by a regular R9 or USA standard 50s and put a set of Duncan green magic pickups or you could take the custombuckers and replace the A3 magnets with A2 magnets and flip the A2 magnet around for the neck pickup so it's out of Phase . Remember despite what some believe simply turing the neck pickup around does not put it out of Phase.
