The early "Vintage" Peter Green model guitars are excellent and about a quarter of the price of the Epiphone "Greeny" made by the Gibson Greedy's, and comparable in playability to any of the Les Paul's I've played which include some of Les's own personal collection and various Les Pauls I've owned over the years.
No one talks about the neck. I’ve got one of the early JHS Vintage Greeny LPs (2012). Good guitar but the neck is small in the hand, which doesn’t sound like Green’s own description of his guitar. Actually I “unmodded” mine a fair bit to make it a better fit for me, so now it’s more like the Bolan or Ronson LP. Number one mod: get a decent wiring loom. Stripped the maple top to bare wood (nice slab of plain grain under the thin veneer), standardised the very decent Wilkinson pickups, and put a decent bone nut on it. Plays sweet, sounds classic, looks distinct.😊
Just a couple of months ago I bought a second hand Gibson Les Paul Studio for £800. It's an awesome guitar with a proper maple cap, thin nitro finish and Dirty Fingers pickups. No vaneer and no "tone plastic" binding. Sure, it's got a few dents, but that adds to the mojo in my eyes. It's a real workhorse guitar which will never depreciate... and you could buy two of them for that price.
At least in Europe you can find Japanese Tokai and Edwards Les Paul copies at around the same price, with better QC. I don't know what's Gibson's plan going forward, but this looks like they are abandoning the sub 1000 USD tier of the market.
Why should the Epiphone headstock shape be like the Gibson shape after all it is an Epiphone not a Gibson I think the headstock revision in the inspired by collection is quite enough for that matter if you want a Gibson headstock so bad just go buy a Gibson or for that matter since Epiphone is the older company how about Gibson adopting the Epiphone headstock shape the more you think about this it's nuts
If i want the guitar im going to buy it. That said im seriously considering it. I appreciate watching videos of an alternate opinion but to me it seems great!
If you like it, want it, and can afford it, then ignore what anyone says and buy it! Don't let others dictate what you should anbd should not do with your hard earned money.
I 100% agree!! And we do have the power to force these manufacturers back into reality. Sadly, there will be just enough people willing to screwed and they will screw all of us. I feel the same way about Ticketmaster.
"Corporate greed" lmao. These "corporations" and there pursuit of profit is the only reason you even have a guitar with quality better than a 1965 Sears Silvertone. A spoiled nation of fools for sure. Btw, do you ask for less than you can get for your job?
It’s funny that everyone kept asking for Epiphone to be a Gibson. Now that it has become a Gibson with the price tag to match, everyone is losing their minds and wondering what happened. Well, you got what you asked for, if you asked me. People just couldn’t let Epiphone be its own thing and now we’re paying for it. Inflation is also playing it’s part, but Gibson is just taking advantage in a way that they know people will fall for. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the old Epiphone headstock. I loved the clipped wing/tombstone headstock, it was Epiphone’s thing. But like I said, people wanted Epiphone to be a Gibson and now we are paying for it. So, thanks to those people for your contribution to these insane prices.
After receiving this yesterday, I have to say that it plays as good as the $3200 Gibson Greeny, and plays way way better than my 59 Epi. Totally worth the $1499. The Greenybuckers are completely different in sound, and the neck and headstock feel much smoother than the cheaper 59 Epi. If you are good with electronics and good with tools then sure you can make your own, but why bother when you can get this with a warranty and all. Everything in the world is more expensive and you can take your stand all day long but in reality everything is getting more expensive and sure if everyone stopped buying it would put prices down, but that is never going to happen so to whine about prices is kind of pointless when we live in a capitalistic world. All in all a great guitar and a good buy, in terms of other guitars and current prices, it is a good deal.
Agree $100! These people are just mad cuz they can’t afford one, & even though they are “pro Epiphone”, they’re still holding onto the stigma that where a guitar is made & what’s on the headstock is a reflection on the quality. It’s not. The only thing that separates the Epi Greeny from the Gibson, is it doesn’t have wings glued on the headstock, the top isn’t quite as nice & it doesn’t have nitrocellulose lacquer. That’s it. And my ‘59 Epi had to have the frets leveled, which is unacceptable for a $1000 guitar, or even a $700 guitar IMO
Actually I paid $1500 for a real Les Paul, all Epiphone's and Gibson's make real Les Pauls since Gibson bought Epi in 1957 - anything other than Epi and Gibson is a copy. Instead of paying $3200 for the Gibson Greeny which is actually a $2000 level guitar, I paid $1500 for something that the only major difference between it and the Gibson Greeny is the shine. With a few minor tweaks it is the exact guitar that is being played in front of 10s of thousands of Metallica fans live, so to me it is a great deal. I own 3 Gibsons, and 2 other Epi's and the quality of this guitar is as good as the Gibsons and quite a bit above the other Epi's I own. And yes, why pay $3200 for a $2000 Gibson when you can get the same sound for $1500? I will be a $500 richer 'just as good or better guy'@@frankcarter6427

Totally agree. I've got all ranges of LPs inc amongst others the Epiphone 59, a Gbson Tribute & a Gibson Standard. The Epi 59 is a great guitar, well worth the £800 I paid for it, but this is nothing like worth double that amount. It's a con. As you rightly say don't buy it
Are you serious? Going on RUclips asking ppl not to buy a guitar because you don’t like it ? And the price in Europe is due to the conversion dollar euro .
Epiphone are just taking a leaf out of their Big Brother's book - Gibson already sell multiple versions of basically the same guitars with prices that escalate from 'really expensive' to 'insanely expensive', based on some perceived exclusivity, or association with a certain artist. It's not surprising that Epiphone feel they can pull off the same scam when consumers eat it up so readily from Gibson.
Just picked up a Epi 1959 LP standard second hand for $525. What a steal! The burst buckers are awesome so no need to replace them. Don’t waste your money one the Greeny
It has the custom headstock and custom designed Greenybuckers. Epiphone did miss a trick when it came to case candy. Having a certificate, some Kirk Hammett themed photos, and maybe a custom strap would make for a better collector experience. The Tommy Thayer has its own custom case, custom color Duncan pickups, and special paint. Not a huge Kiss fan but it is a nicely done collector piece.
I think you've changed my mind! I am headed up to the US in a few weeks for a visit and was going to get the Greeny, but am now leaning towards an Epiphone 1959 LP Standard Outfit ADB instead. I only have a single-coil Epiphone at the moment and really want a guitar with humbuckers. The $500 difference wouldn't be such a dealbreaker for me if the guitar merits it and I lived in the US, but going back through customs makes it another $500 (because it's over the tax-free limit). Besides, I can always get a couple of pickups if I really need to have that sound and have friends deliver them .😉
Don’t understand the hate on this guitar?! It’s the first official Epiphone that has a Gibson headstock…other then the Japanese ones…and has really cool pick ups along with a long neck tenon…if you get that on a Gibson your gonna pay a hefty price/customshop prices. You don’t want to pay for the price, that’s fine but the guitar is cool in my opinion. Buy what you like and rock out! Epiphone/Gibson are gonna continue doing their thing like it or not. There’s other options out there 🤷♂️
The guitar is probably great but $1500 just ain’t it. I’m still a pro-Epiphone guy but it should be like $1300 at most (and many would say that’s too much).
I can respect that…agreed…1300 would be better…I guess with everything going up in price, they feel that they can charge more. Sucks for us who supports Epiphone 😔
eh when it comes to the weight its luck of the draw, like with Gibsons. sometimes ull get lucky and get on thats 8.5 to 9 sometimes ull get one thats 10. unless you buy from a supplier who actually puts up their weights and tops like Sweetwater does i think andertons also does it now.
I’ve been on a major Epiphone kick the last few years, I’ve got a Koa Custom, a green 335, and Pelham Blue SG and one of those faded finish Les Paul Classic goldtops, and I love them all, they are awesome guitars especially for the price. I’m not paying almost twice what I paid for the Koa Custom for a half-assed Greeny knock off.
So we get an affordable Peter Green guitar, but it's not good enough for some people. This guitar is still cheaper than a Gibson and has the all important out of phase pickups. Sure, you can do the mod yourself, but not everyone is a guitar tech.
Can you change the batteries in a vibrator? Then, you can change the magnet in a pickup. You don't have to be a tech to perform most basic guitar tasks or mods. Besides, the point of this video is that it is NOT affordable for most people. It's still just a $900 guitar with a $1500 sticker on it. That's just not cool.
Raw materials have gone up in the past 3 years, so they have to cover the upcharge by raising prices, plus they have to pay an artist premium. Would you agree with that?
at this point you might as well get yourself an amberburst chibson and buy the greenie pickups yourself and you got an epiphone greenie for cheap with the gibson headstock on it. already did it my self, total costs for everything was not over $600! And for clarification i do own Gibsons, Epiphones and Ibanez's and this was the cheapest route plus the guitar sounds just like the original without the "original price"!!! 😉😊
I bought an ESP Edwards John Sykes model LP custom. It has the open book headstock and a chambered mahogany and neck with a ebony board. I've owned Gibson's and Epi's and honestly I prefer my Edwards, but to each his own, buy and play what you like, nobody else's opinion matters.
I was in Australia last week and while checking out guitar prices found there are music stores there trying to gouge customers for up to $3200 dollars for the Epiphone. These are what 1500 full price in the USA? thats 2150 Australian. Yet the stores there greedily gouge over 1,000 more. I feel sorry for musicians there. And before someone says "but shipping", Gibson ships guitars there by the container full. A container costs about 2,000 dollars to send anywhere internationally and one would easily hold at least 200 guitars boxed up. That's 10 dollars per guitar to get there. So no that is not why the price is so high.
It's not greed (at least not on the part of the dealers). The distribution network there is completely corrupt, and Australian dealers pay way more for guitars (and probably ALL music gear) than dealers in any other part of the world. It's been like that for a long time now.
@@LuthiartIf it's been like this for a long time then the blame has to go back to the dealers. If they were all screaming about it to manufacturers, things would change. Manufacturers are very concerned about the brand image.

TV, stereos Xbox, PS they haven't really changed. I think inflation has given people and excuse to be even more greedy.
Seems like Gibson has positioned Epiphone to “compete” with the MIM Fenders now rather than with the Squier line.
The only problem is that the MIM Fender is still a Fender, while Epiphone has always been the Squier of Gibson.
If that's their plan going forward, they'll need a new brand to compete in the most affordable tier of the market (like Squier, Ibanez Gio and Jackson JS)
@@WaurufExand the fenders are made in Mexico which as always had a stand up reputation. The other.........China
Great point , the guitars coming g outta Mexico are exceptional to say the least. My opinion anyway.
In Australia you can buy a second hand Gibson Les Paul Standard for not much more money than this new Epiphone. If you want a Gibson wait for a good second hand one.
Agreed
Cheers back at you
I really like the lower priced Gibsons. I continue to be perplexed by the high priced Epis.
My 2005 epiphone Lp custom was better than my Gibson 2016 studio. The quality over the years is so inconsistent.
You can get a lot better guitars for 1699, money for gimmicks really. Gibson are masters of repackaging the same guitar!
No kidding eh
@@benallmark9671 Harley Benton make a very similar guitar for 350 dollars, all it needs is better pickups, add a couple of decent pickups and you have a greeny for 500 bucks!
Who cares , if you don’t like it don’t buy it .
Life is easy.
If you like it buy it .
End of the discussion… guitars are made to make music not polluting videos ah ah
So how exactly does the carving of the headstock and the colors of the control knobs affect the sound of the instrument?
Good to hear people protesting against these ridicilous pricings!
I saw the Epiphone slash heavily discounted. I think this will go the same way
Couldn't agree with you more, Dave. 👍
I agree the Vintage Lemon Drops are amazing guitars . Only 900 here in New Zealand. Not 2.6 k for the Epi
Did you keep the original pickups ?
@@benallmark9671 it's the '70s tribute, so came with Dirty Fingers. They're super hot and sound great.
@@GarryParker very nice !
Saying a guitar is not worth it without having tried it, too funny 😂
I think it's about the specs. It's still just made like any other Epiphone, that it would play well is kinda normal for most Epiphones.
At least in Europe you can find Japanese Tokai and Edwards Les Paul copies at around the same price, with better QC.
I don't know what's Gibson's plan going forward, but this looks like they are abandoning the sub 1000 USD tier of the market.
I've thought of you as a hack, but you are completely correct here, Mr Not Named 3chord....
😏
If i want the guitar im going to buy it. That said im seriously considering it. I appreciate watching videos of an alternate opinion but to me it seems great!
If you like it, want it, and can afford it, then ignore what anyone says and buy it! Don't let others dictate what you should anbd should not do with your hard earned money.
@@markde9904 A shame to talk about and make money, horrible.
I know it will be a great video, Dave!
I 100% agree!! And we do have the power to force these manufacturers back into reality. Sadly, there will be just enough people willing to screwed and they will screw all of us. I feel the same way about Ticketmaster.
You're 💯% correct. Corporate greed, cheap manufacturing, slave labor etc
"Corporate greed" lmao. These "corporations" and there pursuit of profit is the only reason you even have a guitar with quality better than a 1965 Sears Silvertone. A spoiled nation of fools for sure. Btw, do you ask for less than you can get for your job?
I just got an epiphone 1959 for £500 online, love it , way too much guitar for me
“Don’t say its too expensive, say you can’t afford it” 😅 from the Wolf on Wall Street.
That’s it. And my ‘59 Epi had to have the frets leveled, which is unacceptable for a $1000 guitar, or even a $700 guitar IMO
you paid 1500 for a les paul copy
Here we go…..the “just as good or better guys”…..lol!
@@DCUSMC95 here we go…another, “If it ain’t made in ‘Merica, it’s shit” guy. Get with the program. All you wanna be cork sniffing purists are living in the dark ages. Where a guitar is made & what’s on the headstock is no longer a reflection of quality. Anyone who doesn’t realize this is living under a rock. Sad but true
It seems that Epi Greeny is a atempt from Gibson to see how much people gonna pay for the Gibby headstock. I´m not inpresse diwh the guitar at all. Top is so-so, knobs are aweful, etc.
You could get a burny with the gibson headstock and amber top and switch pickups or whatever you want for way less than the epiphone and burny guitars are very well made.
In the US I got a brand new Slash for 500,the Epi 59 is now on sale for 750,I agree with you.
This one only makes we wish I had picked up that Andertons exclusive lemondrop 59 when that was out at half the price
I bought it just because everyone said not too. I live in the US and ordered it from Anderton’s just to increase the price and the shipping.
2.6 k here in New Zealand!!! Buy the USA here for 5.7 k
Greetings from Armagh
Over a thousand bucks for an Epiphone is insane to me. When I bought my Epiphone Les Paul Standard 10 years ago it was 250 bucks.
Well, there are many caveats to that statement. Go look at a vintage prewar Epiphone hollow body guitar, any model will do, and come talk with me…
I have owned the Epi Boneyard Les Paul since 2004. Gibson Burstbucker 2 and 3 pick ups and out of phase on the middle switch position. Paid 700 Canadian when new. I have been offered twice that much but i cant do it. Everytime i pick it up and plug it in i smile from ear to ear! I saw this epi greeny thing at a local store last week and i was not impressed, especially with quality control. For me 2200 Canadian is lot of money for a similar looking Gibson Headstock.Great video sir, keep em coming!
Hello
I read that one of the previous owners of actual Greeny said the whole pickup phase thing is a load of horse-crap.
Hells yeah. On every single point. It’s just getting so out of hand.
So who else thinks the DG-335 will cost more than Greeny?! Ooh, ooh! Pick me, pick me! 👋🏻 👋🏻 👋🏻
Totally Agree. I am afraid for that one to drop now....$2000 Epihone NOT made in USA?!?
Totally agree. I've got all ranges of LPs inc amongst others the Epiphone 59, a Gbson Tribute & a Gibson Standard. The Epi 59 is a great guitar, well worth the £800 I paid for it, but this is nothing like worth double that amount. It's a con. As you rightly say don't buy it
I have a Harley Benton with SD green magic pickups and I love it. I have about 400 us in it.
Definitely not buying that Epiphone crap. People should save for something decent from a company that pays their luthiers better than their lawyers.
The brand Vintage has been making a greeny for like ten years now, for way less. Can you imagine what this would cost in Australia???
I recently got an Epiphone LP STD 60’s for $650 and I love everything about it. $1500 for the Greenie is way too much money.
Love the new Greeny from Epiphone
Made my own months ago. Used Seymour Duncan green magics I found on reverb. All in I’m under $1k.
Holy cow that’s $1860 when you do the exchange. You have got to be freaking kidding me!
I heard they’re 10+ Lbs - A heavy guitar.
They demoed the Epi greeny on the Play And Trade Guitars channel and it weighed 10lbs on the nose. Heavy indeed.
eh when it comes to the weight its luck of the draw, like with Gibsons. sometimes ull get lucky and get on thats 8.5 to 9 sometimes ull get one thats 10. unless you buy from a supplier who actually puts up their weights and tops like Sweetwater does i think andertons also does it now.
Crazy. In 2021 I got a Brand New Gibson Les Paul Classic for $1800 from Sweetwater.
That's just not cool.
three chord dave is four chord beard
Raw materials have gone up in the past 3 years, so they have to cover the upcharge by raising prices, plus they have to pay an artist premium. Would you agree with that?
at this point you might as well get yourself an amberburst chibson and buy the greenie pickups yourself and you got an epiphone greenie for cheap with the gibson headstock on it. already did it my self, total costs for everything was not over $600! And for clarification i do own Gibsons, Epiphones and Ibanez's and this was the cheapest route plus the guitar sounds just like the original without the "original price"!!! 😉😊
You can find a like new Les Paul Classic for 15-17 hundred. I do like the open book head stock on the Epey.
I wonder how much the Epiphone DG-335 will come out at, rumors are that one is in the works…
got a whole lotta ones
I’ve been checking out Chibson Greenies and an very happy with the value.
To each their own. Ya might bet a gem ya might get a dud and that goes for buying any brand.
No epiphone should be over 1k
Ridiculous pricing! Get a PRS McCarty SE 594 instead on sale now for $759! MUCH BETTER guitar and GREAT price!
Me and my friends unboxed one today and wow, the flimsy knobs, flimsy weight and we didn't neeed to plug it in. We agreed this thing is worth $500 USD. Crazy market and marketing.
It’ll sell because of the headstock. I would definitely just buy a used Gibson.
I bought the Greeny, got a slight discount its pretty friggin sweet
Save a fortune and buy the Vintage Greeny brilliant quality sound amazing very well built love em
i do not understand wanting someone else's guitar down to the knobs. Why? buy a decent guitar and make it your own don't be a lame copycat. Reminds me of when i was a kid and people would buy fancy sneakers expecting to run faster
Well said, good sir!🎸🤘🎸
Someone finally talking some sense about this. 🤟
Any luck Dave on getting someone to grab me some pickups off the Gibson Website like we chatted about?
Thanks dude
You could by a real Gibson second hand for this CRAZY. MY LAZARUS WAS£699 and looks much better
Cesar from Gibson will tell you “it’s only business, nothing personal”.
I have a feeling that early 20s Epiphones with Kalamazoo headstocks will be much sought after in the future as the purple-patch guitars that bridged the gap between Epiphone guitars moving UP to being excellent and moving DOWN to being overpriced. Didn't last long, did it, kids?
I got lucky and my brother found a lefty Epi Les Paul Standard Pro 2014 and cherry sunburst, for 200.00 and she looks just like a couple of Pagey`s 59s the Probucker pups are great too
All the headstock in the world doesn't make it a Gibson.
Got it, daddy! Dude...just show the specs and let people decide.
I agree. I bought the gibson version instead.
changed profile pic to show my baby, Epi Les Paul, going to refresh page and come back
i have the epiphone 59...so alls i have to do is turn one of the pickup around..now i have a greeny
