I watch a lot of flyfishermen, and to be honest, I really feel you're the first that analyzes the river, studies the fish, understands the techniques. I love the indicator setup. I use the same. Also Euro Nymph is my favorite as you can tell almost every take, but the fiber indicater is a close second. The bobber indicator you have tins of missed fish. Also, your roll casts are super accurate and impressive. I love long cast and setting the hook. Something about seeing 30 feet of line going tight. Just satisfying. I don't get that same feeling with anything else in the world.
I don't think it's an official brand. Just a small clear tube cut and I use wool to the same affect, but any kind of airy fiber should work. I have seen some at fly shops before but rarely since most use the bobber indicator.
Hi Gareth, nice to see you back on your old fishing ground. Big mistake not cleaning your gear from last fishing trip! Didymo Dave will have your guts for garters entering his Hini and bringing in all those foreign germs! Anyway, heaps of good size fish coming up the rivers and the TT Carpark should have a booking system in place to accommodate all the anglers. Shame that the access through the quarry is no longer available. Cheers mate. Harera
@FISHGUY GWAINE I've bumped into him a few times on the Hine but what impressed me the most was how he waded across parts of the river to clear hanging line and leaders and generally cleaning up other anglers casting mess.
Very much enjoyed this video, I really love how you are “real” showing the good, bad, beautiful and ugly. I enjoy your fly fishing videos more than anyone else at this time. Thanks so much for sharing and taking your valuable time to do this labor of love. And, thanks for sharing your nymphing system!

Awesome mate, love all your videos! 6 months into learning to fly fish, and caught my first good fish yesterday in the Kaimanawas. Everything that caught me that fish I learned from your videos. Cheers!

good to see you back local Gareth, I need to get up there, all the reports of the great fish being caught have go me frothing, unfortunately I have other things that need doing, but I am sure it will fish well all winter and probably into next summer as well.

Great video especially the rig description ,just wish I’d watched it prior to spending the last two and a half days Matariki holiday on the Tongiriro and the TT catching nothing☹️you make it look so easy!
Hey, I think you should try OROS strike indicators. Their technology is something the strike indicator world has been missing for a very long time, I believe you would enjoy them, small, medium, or large sized!
The OROS strike indicator would be illegal here. It's classified as a float, which is illegal. The indicator has to be made of natural yarn. We can't have the rivers littered with bright coloured plastic balls.
enjoyed the intro was discussing loop fly rods with a major retailer a couple of weeks ago the only issue he has is that they are to cheap for the quality you get
Hi Gareth, nice vid again. I found it interesting that you put that lightweight egg below your heavier nymph. I just wondered where the egg would 'float'. Below, above or at the same level as the nymph? You obviously had good reasons to do so.
I’m the egg just drifts better when it’s trailing and not between weight is the main reason. I think it’s sits at a pretty similar level to the weightd nymph or split shot
I think I would have been tempted to try to remove the deep hook and line but probably end up killing the fish. I guess it may not make that difference ultimately but you are clearly right not to try
Also, can explain what the split shot is? I'm picturing a small sinker with a wedge out of it that you mould around the line. And what would be your strategy for this time of year? Still in the rivers, using an egg?
Thanks for the video. Could you tell me how you "tie" your Otter's egg flies. When I use them, they seem to come off the hook after a fish or two, so I'm curious about you you go about it.
You can overweight your rod yes, helpful in many scenarios and many people do it. But you know to know when and where it is appropriate. As the above says its puts much more compression on the blank and can overstress the blanks if you're casting to the backing. Also some line is lighter or heavier than others, when you're super experienced you can feel this in the cast, the rod doesn't compress properly or compresses heavily, leading you to weight up or down (Very rarely will you rate down line, nearly unheard of) mostly cheaper lines underweight their lines for cost cutting. In conclusion, if you're a beginner then keep the line weight the same as the rod.
Hi Gareth, great video, you looked like you were having a great time. I am heading up to the Hine tomorrow and was wondering what’s the best time of day to fish the Hine, if I could afford it I would get you to guild me bat as a guild is a bit out of my price range I will have to resort to being cheeky and asking for free advice… regards David
WOW!!! Ok so I have a fly rod but never caught anything on it, despite trying. So I use a spin rod instead. Now a good day for me is getting even a bite. If it hooks up, that's an amazing day. If I catch a fish, well let's just say it's a good year. So to see you hook so many and with a fly rod just blows my mind. I'm down in Dunedin. So maybe it's a location thing as well as knowledge/skill. I don't know. Any suggestions would be so appreciated. Rivers to try, time of year, guides, whatever. I feel like I'm missing out on an incredible hobby because of something obvious that I don't see.
Hi There, question, I have 2 rods and deciding to get back into my trout fishing, how do you know what line weight to put on your rod? Is it printed on the rod itself?
