    This is why I hate the way people put so much stock in winning an Oscar. That year you had such incredible performances competing against one another. I would have voted for Holly Hunter myself but Angela Basset was also deserving and I do believe Channing, Thompson, and Winger gave performances IMO that were stronger than many Oscar winners but because they had the misfortune of competing against one another the "losers" here don't get the same status as some mediocre performances that have won in lesser years.

    All of the nominees were Oscar-winning performances, no doubt about that. But, just like Supporting Actress cathegory, none of them stood any chance against Holly Hunter's performance in The Piano. Especially since during the entire movie she doesn't say a single word on screen (not counting narration, of course). None of the actresses in both cathegories stood any chance against Holly and Anna that year.

    • @homhable
      @homhable 5 лет назад +12

      "What’s love got to do with it“ is a very nice movie but quite shallow compared to the deep and poetical "Piano“. The character of "Tina Turner“ is just a victim who in the end stands up for herself. Hunter’s "Ada“ is much more complex and her emotional journey goes from shy to stubborn to obstinate to vulnerable, melancholic, nasty, haughty, repulsiv, tender, vulnerably longing, lustful, loving, destroyed. The emotions Bassett goes through are basically happy, sad and brave. Angela plays the hell out of that but Hunter’s role just offered more possibilites, and she took those to perfection. She even played the Piano herself while Bassett only lipsinched. Both performances are absolutely amazing, but as much as I admire Angela Bassett's Tina I think Hunter’s win was totally justified.

      I understand that filmaking is considered a form of art and therefore art is objective. But a comment like "HATE that POS movie" just shows you're a philistine with no appreciation for the arts at all and don't deserve to have an opinion on the matter. Come back with a reasonable argument/debate about why you didn't enjoy the film and you'll be taken seriously.
      Or stick to your Marvel Universe and let the grown-ups talk amongst themselves.
