Academy trivia, apparently when she got backstage Gene Hackman said to her "I don't think you will have problems getting cast in your next school play"
Holly Hunter was the principal actress in that movie, The Piano, and that's why she was really happy for her co-star, Anna Paquim. ...and yes, Holly is a tremendous actress.!!
5. Holly Hunter in The Firm 4. Rosie Perez in Fearless 3. Emma Thompson in In The Name of The Father 2. Winona Ryder in The Age of Innocence 1. Anna Paquin in The Piano
Oh My God! The Piano has a piece of my heart forever but Emma Thompson in In the Name of the Father broke my heart. I’ve never sobbed more in a cinema in my life. I’m so torn.
You can hear the shock of the audience when Gene Hackman says her name. The odds on favorite was Winona Ryder. Rosie Perez was a close second. She was the surprise win that night.
@@IWantToMature85 What pity? Why was anyone sorry for her? She didn't face any tragedies. There were plenty of other kids that were nominated for Oscars and never won. She was just unknown, but she deserved the Oscar. I thought Rider's performance was a little dry.
I cried watching this live and I still cry every time I watch it. There's something about talented young people realizing for the first time just how talented they truly are.
*i started from 25th Hour, i saw a girl i recognise her as Rogue from X Men, i google her name was Anna Paquin, she played a movie The Piano. She won an Oscar at 11. And here i am now.*
People shit on her for her role in X-men but she always delivers her best with what she's given. As a child, I was only attracted to the X-men movies because of Anna's performance in the first movie. She felt so natural and compelling all throughout.
She earned this Oscar, she acted for herself and for her mom, who basically acted with her mannerisms, gestures and through her sign. It was the daughter/Anna who had her lines to learn but the lines of Holly as well, and at the ripe old age of 11?.
The Oscars have only honored 3 children in competitive categories over its 96 year history. Patty Duke for Miracle Worker, Tatum O'Neal for Paper Moon and Anna Paquin for The Piano.
In her opening monologue, Whoopi Goldberg poked fun at Holly Hunter and Emma Thompson both being nominated in both acting categories. "There weren't enough good roles for women this year, but this year we can blame it on Holly Hunter and Emma Thompson, 'cause they found all the good roles and played all of them." XD
If you think about it, Anna's win isn't much of a surprise if you do a process of elimination. Holly was already solidified for best actress and the academy never honors the same actor or actress twice on the same night. Emma won an Oscar the year before for Howard's End and back to back Oscars are rare. Fearless was not a well known movie and it was released earlier that year. That was the only Oscar nomination it got so Oscar voters probably didn't bother seeing the film. As for Winona, her movie was not very popular either and it was also released earlier that year. Since Anna was in a movie that had several Oscar nominations, voters probably wanted to see the movie before voting for the different categories. They were surprised by Anna's performance and decided, wow she's pretty good, I'm voting for her.
_The Age of Innocence_ was released in *October 1993;* _The Piano_ the following month. Also, *Winona Ryder* was favored to win that night. She had won the *Golden Globe,* which at the time was the only main precursory award. The first *SAGs* were handed out in *1995;* the first *Critics' Choice* in *1996.* Though *BAFTA* has been around since *1949,* it did not become an *Oscar* predictor until *2001,* when it moved from *April* to *February,* just before the *Oscars.* Prior to that, the *BAFTAs* were pretty anticlimactic, because they used to take place _after_ the *Oscars.*
Is Holly Hunter the only actress to lose an oscar to an actor in a movie she herself won an oscar for? is Emma Thompson the first actress to lose two oscars to actresses from the same film?
Interestingly, it was the youngest line-up ever with an average age of 27. 1. Holly Hunter (36) 2. Emma Thompson (35) 3. Rosie Perez (30) 4. Winona Ryder (23) 5. Anna Paquin (12)

Winona Ryder deserved it more! No offence to Anna, but it was a bit premature to award her an Oscar. Her career hasn't yet taken off as much as people expected.
Academy trivia, apparently when she got backstage Gene Hackman said to her "I don't think you will have problems getting cast in your next school play"
Wow what an honor! She sure kept herself together during the speech and managed to express herself like an adult, truly admiring.
Holly Hunter's reaction is priceless.
Like a proud mom. :)
It only just hit me, that the woman was nominated in two major films that year. 😮
I love Holly being so happy for that beautiful sweet little girl Anna, who deservedly won that Oscar 😁
Me too! I could tell especially by the way Holly bounced a bit in her seat.

Actually holly hunt reaction was an angry tone she was actually upset she lost she was predicted to win
Everybody should see this video at least once in their life
I loved the reaction of Holly and Emma they really wanted to Anna win... I think in that moment they felt very proud
Emma? Really? Why? Were you there?
The first 15 seconds of her speech was the most adorable part.
Happy 40th birthday, Anna Paquin ❣️
Rosie Perez was phenomenal in Fearless. Heartbreaking performance 💔
5. Holly Hunter in The Firm
4. Rosie Perez in Fearless
3. Emma Thompson in In The Name of The Father
2. Winona Ryder in The Age of Innocence
1. Anna Paquin in The Piano
Tanto Holly como Emma competían doblemente en las dos ternas major actriz principal y mejor actriz secundaria.
ok
so cute. overwhelmed and kind of hyper ventilating...
so cute, and well deserved
That was beyond sweet! I remember that night.
Omg. She was so adorable and poised for someone so young.
Oh My God! The Piano has a piece of my heart forever but Emma Thompson in In the Name of the Father broke my heart. I’ve never sobbed more in a cinema in my life. I’m so torn.
I watch In The Name of the Father at least once every 5 year for a good cry...
You can hear the shock of the audience when Gene Hackman says her name. The odds on favorite was Winona Ryder. Rosie Perez was a close second. She was the surprise win that night.
This just shows that she got it because of pity. Winona was the favorite.

What pity? She got it because she deserved it.
Winona recited her lines in such a bland manner. Glad Anna won.
Holly really loves that cute little girl Anna who performed so greatly
I am so proud as a fellow new zealander to watch this
Philip Moore we are proud of her too, from Winnipeg.

Anna Paquin looked so pretty in that blue dress.
Damn what a strong year on film! And boy, Paquin's performance in _The Piano_ was out of this world.
I'm here after following Anna Paquin's Instagram profile. She's so cute here.
SO PRECIOUS
The 2nd youngest person to win an Oscar
Sooooo cute!
That was no fluke win. She has shown exceptional talent in role after role.
I know! Incredible natural talent

2:11 has anyone noticed that Anna Paquin looks exactly like her mother seated next to her?
this is so wholesome
the irishman bring me here
The craziest thing is seeing all those other performances and movies I had NO IDEA existed at all.
90s cinema is great. pre cgi. height of the craft. so much good drama, good scripts....
I think this should’ve been Rosie Perez’s year, she really broke against type casting and brought heart to a Dark Comedy
Fearless was a dark comedy?!! On what planet?
Joan Cusack should have been nominated for Addams Family Values!
*FACEPALM*
Amazing performance! But pure comedies and oscars just don't get along
@@253timeandtimeagain2 like her comedic and nominated role in In & Out?
@@253timeandtimeagain2 I disagree because marissa tomei in my cousin Vinny was pure comedy and she won.
@@fortifarse agree!
Rogué won an Oscar and Logan its proud.
Holly got the Oscar for the same film.
Two actresses that were double nominees, that year… I don’t think that feat has ever repeated!!
That one clip from In the Name of the father, could had won Emma Thompson all the awards
She won the year before for Howards End so I think that's the reason why she received few votes from the Academy.
Emma Thompson deserved most. But her reaction when Paquin wins is so cute. What a wonderful woman.
Beautiful!

Holly Hunter nominated for supporting and best actress?
yemanyaaa aga
It happens
So was Emma Thompson that night. Best Actress for REMAINS OF THE DAY and Supporting Actress for IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER.
Scarlett Johansson too
Anna was so little she could barely see over the podium.
Now I understand why she's so quiet in The Irishman...

True but the previous year, Joan Plowright had won the Golden Globe for supporting actress and Marisa Tomei took home the Oscar.@@VinMar-m6w
Elastigirl loses to Rogue
Emma Thompson was my pick that year.
Emma Thomson deserved that Oscar for her performance!!!
What did anna paquin wear at the 66th academy awards?
Is Holly Hunter the only actress to lose an oscar to an actor in a movie she herself won an oscar for? is Emma Thompson the first actress to lose two oscars to actresses from the same film?
❤️👏🙏🥺!!!!!
1:37 he is Massimo Boldi 🤣🤣🤣
Holly as a double nominee was deserving and lucky to get it unlike Sigourney Weaver with 2 noms in the same year who lost both.
Emma Thomson and Rosie Perez had the most solid performances.
Emma Thompson like wait what...
Who’s here because of James Acaster

who is it? I am here because of the Piano's crew-))
must be weird to lose for a child, but all of them are phenomenal

He won Supporting Actor the year before for Unforgiven.
