This is just superb, been searching for "will triang trains run on hornby track?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Piyaliyah Uncommunicative Preference - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is an awesome one of a kind product for discovering how to build a model train railroad easily minus the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy got great success with it.
It's amazing what you can do with these little things, that whole layout is the same size as the rolling stock yard on my HO layout! (I know i'm late, just wanted to comment, looking for inspiration for my first N scale layout)
My 7 year old son and I are starting our first layout. We decided on the Union Pacific central Nebraska line, circa late 1980's-mid1990's, in N Scale. Thank you for your content.
Joshua Caten I don’t doubt it with how small Z scale is😂. I could not do Z scale but for the people who can, you can really fit a lot in a super small space
Interesting idea. I look forward to seeing this layout evolve. One suggestion, cover that table next time with drop cloth or even newspaper to protect the surface. I learned that lesson the hard way.
So i moved into a new hut, and theres a little shack in our garden. made a L shaped 1990's model plan, and i realised, "this might work" unlike my other plans that just take too much space. still gonna have to make TINY changes, but N scale is the way to go.
Not a bad method. But if you want to save time and money..just use spray adhesive. Better yet, just have them cut down a section of Homasote ( we used to call that trainboard; its a sheet made of compressed newsprint paper.
Very helpful video! Just getting into N scale and most videos are too detailed or don’t even cover the beginning basics. Would love to see more how to videos with tunnel, MT building, etc
Uriah Hutchins glad you enjoyed the video! I hope to make more videos of this small n scale layout but I’m always having to fight against time and to try and fit it into my busy life! Keep an eye out for more!
Ok Charlie..I came across your channel this morning and I really like build videos..so, I'm in on the ground floor of this one. I did sub, and click the bell so I can follow along as your apartment size portable layout comes along.
Overland Transportation System thanks for the sub! I’m glad you found the video helpful and enjoyable. The next step should be coming soon! Been super busy with work and such and haven’t been able to sit and edit. Next one will come soon I promise!
nice video, im trying to start a small n scale layout myself and have 2 questions. 1.did you use a table or just use the board. 2. how did you wire the tracks.
For this layout I got a 2 foot wide by 4 foot long piece of wood and used that as my base. This way I could carry it and store it where I want. If you're doing a layout that is going to stay in one place or is going to be built to the room, then you'd want to make your bench work to fit the room or location you plan to have your layout sit. For wiring tracks it depends on what type of track you have. Kato is a good brand in my opinion for creating a layout simply because the track snaps together and can be taken apart and reconfigured however you want. I would recommend using Kato track especially for beginners as flex track takes a little more skill. If you are running standard DC trains then you want to solder each wire to the bottom side of each of the rails and then take those wires and connect to the transformer. For larger layouts you can do a bus line. This means you have your transformer connected to two wires running below the layout, then you can add drops coming down from different points on the track and connect to those two wires to make equal power distribution around the entire layout. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
Just found your video! Great stuff. I am in the process of building my first layout. I am using a similar setup for my base. Works great. Thanks for posting. Liked and subscribed!
Andrew Ackerley sorry for the late response. If you go to a hardware store and ask for pink or blue foam, they’ll direct you to it. I think it’s something like pink panther foam or something. I can’t remember the exact name off the top of my head.
Hello - can you tape subsequent videos for next steps , process for laying down track, track shape design, using ground cover , added elevation or valleys , incorporating structures etc.

Charlie i came across your channel, and interested in seeing the steps to building your n scale layout. What happened? I can!t find part 2 ext for the build of the n scale layout.
Hey bob! I have part two edited and ready to go. Just haven’t gotten the time to sit down, transfer it and upload it. I’ve been trying to fit these videos in my super busy life with my company working and with school. Part 2 should be coming soon showing an easy way of how to lay roadbed and track on top of what I showed in this video. If you press the little bell by the subscribe button, it’ll notify you when I post the next part 2 video!
wally allyn when I went to Home Depot they didn’t have one piece in that size. I had to get two of the 2x2’s and I also didn’t want to buy a big sheet and cut the size I needed out.
wally allyn I didn’t use one full piece because when I was at Home Depot looking for the foam, they didn’t have any in that size for one piece. So, I had to get two pieces to make it work. I also didn’t want to get a bigger piece and cut that size out from it.
Great! I'm glad to hear that people are still getting into the hobby and keeping it alive. Have fun and enjoy the process and the journey of creating a world of your own!

Comment how you created your layout!
I have spent months researching how to build a railroad layout and found a great resource at Jareks hobby club (look it up on google)
So I subscribed do the same for me I'll upload my n scale layout for you to see an comment what I can do to improve the realistic look

I love N Scale, you can do a lot in a little bit of room.
I agree! Great for when you don’t have a large room to do larger scales such as o scale.
@@682charlie you can do a lot more with z scale.

Thanks for the great advice for getting started on a layout.

“ I don’t have a caulking gun” next scene has one lol

i've learned A LOT. thank you for reassuring me that i can do this lol.

This was a huge help , thanks !!
This video was a big help thank you for filming this! Since I am starting my own N scale western and modern layouts.

Great and original idea -- a video series on a small layout. I'll be watching the entire series. Thanks!!
Excellent work!
I am doing research before i start my 1st N Scale build and found your video. Did you continue this series? Thanks
I wanted to continue this series but life hit and I unfortunately had to end it 😔

Jeff Hanneman I thought you passed away?
Could you do wood glue on the foam instead?
I've used HO Scale and (American Flyer) S scale, and I am thinking of starting N scale due to confined space, any tips?

N Scale Endeavor I’m excited to hear that! Thank you for the sub!

What is the purpose of the foam
I use the foam so I can have a base that can be shaped for different elevations. This way I can make a little valley or a area for a pond, etc.

What type of board did you use & what was the foam called?

When you spend money on model Railroading you are spending well.
Ellery Parsons agreed!
You will Never get Bored When Model Railroading. What you should’ve done is get Gorilla glue it washes off on hot water.
Good to know! I’ll keep that in mind
11 minutes to show how to glue 2 things together. Time I'll never get back. The information in this video could have been covered in 45 seconds.
