We spent 90K on our wedding..... 85 of that was just for the venue!! We bought a house for 80K and added some furniture and redid the wallpaper in two rooms. Three years later, we're still enjoying the venue. A gorgeous two story, three bedroom/three bathroom Victorian. I came down a gorgeous curved staircase, and we were married in front of the fireplace in the livingroom. Our reception hall? The entire house! It also made our reception into a housewarming party LOL.
Get life insurance, preferably whole life since that doesn't expire. I used to sell life insurance, but gave that up because it was a lot of cold calling. Also don't tell the funeral director how much life insurance you have because otherwise it will end up costing that much.
OneTired Grandma Sorry about your mom. I find some funeral places disgusting as it's really taking advantage at the worst time (at least a wedding is usually happy). A friend of mine's mom just died and I know they don't have much for a funeral but some places make people feel so bad, like you're serving an injustice to your relative. Thankfully I've encountered a couple of good places but they are so rare. They also def cut corners because they know you prob won't complain as it could upset another family member - eg for my grandma's funeral my grandad paid for all the best (not my thing as I'd rather help the living but each to their own) but he got different to what he paid for - one example being we noticed the coffin handles were plastic not brass, wood was cheaper but he was so upset he didn't notice so we never said anything or complained as it wasn't worth getting him more stressed & it was too late once the funeral had started followed by the burial. I was a child at the time but if it was now, I would be at least reporting them
Definitely is... I spent $31k but I don’t regret it. It was a BEAUTIFUL service, classy and scenic. My mom also has such a beautiful and secluded area of land. Such a beautiful view up in the mountains. She took care of us, and I took care of her. I love my momma. ♥️🌹🦋
I spent 2500 total on the wedding... We told the bakery that we were having a "Big Party" that we needed a few dozen cupcakes for. A few places I did say it was a wedding, but they were unconventional places, like the local roast pork shop. They were actually so honored that we chose them as the main course for our wedding, they threw in the sautéed spinach and assorted pickles and peppers for free.

I'm allergic to flowers so it doesn't really matter, but if someone quoted me $100 a center piece, I'd walk directly into Whole Foods and have them whip up something cute for $25.
Wake up you people. "team wedding" is a BLACK WOMAN. BLACK. Get it? smh. Your "professional wedding planner" is gullible … and so are you. All those business saw was a BLACK woman.
MessengerOfTruth they come after every race like this...not everything is about race....plus for the limo company, they were on the phone and still doubled the price.
My wife and I spent about $800 on our wedding and it was perfect. Dresses from Etsy, rented a lighthouse, only invited family, no reception just dinner at a nice restaurant afterwards. It was such an amazing day and the weather was perfect! It was one of the best days of my life. I'll never understand why people go through such torture to put on a big show. I've seen so many friends go through it. It's so unnecessary and just makes people unhappy.
Think of standard of expectation for a wedding vs an anniversary party. The businesses spend way more time talking and planning with brides and grooms and to ensure "perfection". From the colour of napkins and chairs, to the style of cutlery. At an anniversary party do you really care if your napkins are a colour other than white? Do you care if the food is 15 minutes late? Etc. Weddings are more work and effort and that's why it costs more
@LaurenIRL sure it's not, ur celebrating your love for one another. Celebrating another year together, with family and friends, there are vows, there are dresses and food and cake at both, usually a DJ at both. They are the same just different timing and different names. That's like saying the human species is different because ones a boy and ones a girl. They're both still human right? Both represent the same kind of love for one another. Maybe a poor example but I think u get the point. 🤷♀️
Maybe they ask the question on separate days, so that the staff doesn't notice the similarity. After several other unrelated inquiries go by, you think they really will remember?
I know, but I think if they go about it in very different manners and are natural, and easy, relaxed about it, the seller would be calm too and not think about it.
this story redeems my idea of spending as little as possible on a wedding. just close friends and family, no huge party. and then take an awesome honeymoon and save the rest
Or people can just give up on weddings and getting married altogether and save a whole lot of money. If a relationship works it works if it doesn't it doesn't and marriage does nothing to change that, so what the hell is the point in it?
StreakyBaconMan yeah i live with my boyfriend and our baby and i am not planning on getting married. if you need a paper for you to commit to someone then how strong is your relationship really? there are a lot of people who have that paper and still do not commit to their spouses.
Crow I understand that a lot of time and money is put into making the dress but they’re usually not that expensive I’m pretty sure they marked it up just because they could you can get beautiful dresses for thousands cheaper
@@Anonymous-ti8yw especially a dress you will only wear once! At least you can wear a high end prom dress to a cocktail party or something at a later date depending on the design
When I got married I looked for a "white prom dress" and a "first communion cake." My dress and cake were both gorgeous and perfect, but like half of the price.
I got married this past September, I kept it simple and did a lot of diy ie; cake, flowers, hair & makeup. My husband and I paid $3000 for everything, venue, rings, dress, tux, decor, officiant, licence, photographer & food. It was a wonderful day and we had it paid for in 3 pay cheques, no debt!!!
And don't get married during the busy seasons. My mom owned a flower shop, where I worked from the age of 5, until my late teens. Getting married, or throwing an anniversary party mid September to mid October is simply going to spike your prices. But not as much as say mid February, or the May-June window.
or the thrift store. I got decor for a party I will host there on half of days. The only thing I bought new was candy and the table covers. I spent $65 bucks on the decor but some of it can be used after since it is homegoods.
I had a small wedding (40 people) on the stairs of a historic building (free) and then reserved a room at a nice downtown restaurant, provided wine only, with an amazing dinner and cake. Came out to under $2000, I loved my small wedding with close family and friends.
My grandpa told my mom if she eloped and he didn't have to put together a wedding for her he'd just give her 5 thousand dollars. My mom bought a dress and road tripped to Vegas with my dad. Then she came back home after having a fun time in Vegas and got 2 small parties at both of their parents houses respectively and she got to wear her dress 3 times before sending it off for dry cleaning and NEVER PICKING IT UP. She's an icon who got 5k and got to wear her dress 3 times.
Okay, but to be fair the photographer needs to be notified in advance so that they have the correct equipment. I probably wouldn’t bring a telephoto lease, reflector, bride hanger, and lights to an anniversary party.
I think that’s where cutting the budget on other items like venue and food would come in to help. Photography is where I would personally splurge more of the expense because of the level of detail and extensive wandering they’d have to do for several hours. I do some wedding photography gigs during the summer. It’s pretty intense! Of course they have to be compensated with how much they have to follow around the various parties - even more so if you’re flying solo! Also unlike the other items, the photos are the only ones you’ll be looking at for decades!
@@LeahLeah222 Forget the bride hanger --- what brides need is a mother-in-law hanger. So when new mother-in-law starts getting too obnoxious the bride can just tuck her away on a rod in the back of the closet!
As a florist I highly recommend doing this. What I do not recommend is to come to a experienced designer with a pinterest picture of a $15,000 set up talking about "Oh its just a small bouquet and some center pieces" But you want my labor that takes hours and hours of work on my feet, and my hand cramps, my callouses, my cut up hands, and my craftmanship that comes from nearly a decade of dedication and thousands of dollars and hours of my education, but somehow expecting to only pay a few hundred dollars. If you can do it yourself, then do it yourself. If you can't because you are either too lazy to figure it out on your own, or too incompetent to pull off the look you desire, then don't get mad at the price I as businesswoman and tradesmen put on my hard work. I can't tell you how many clients that diy wedding flowers who realize halfway through that there's a reason we charge so much, especially for weddings because the stakes are so high and the amount of time and effort put in is insane. Flowers for a small bat mitzvah will always cost less than a full wedding that includes a bouquet, center pieces, runners, boutineres, corsages, and flower crowns. Oh and not to mention brides are some of the most difficult and demanding customers (some which is totally justified). I have gifted close friends and relatives with free labor, and while everyone is going to wedding rehearsals and brunches I'm in a freezing cooler barely able to move my hands from the cuts and cramping working up until the last minute to replicate that pinterest wedding inspo board. Sometimes it's not a conspiracy, sometimes people have champagne taste and a beer budget, and expect us to pay the the bill. Better go to Costco.
yup that's exactly what i did. I bought roses from costco and made my own bouquet. DIY and it looked exactly the same as the one my friend had at her wedding only she paid way more for it because it came from the dam florist.
If you live in a city the has a flower market & you have a talented friend or relative, you can also go there & get flowers for a fraction of the price. Or, if you go to Costco, first check the price of their flowers before hand & see if you can ask for the kind & amount of flowers you want. You may even get a discount. (It never hurts to ask nicely!)That way, they'll order what you'll want & need that day instead of having an unpleasant surprise on your big day. Plus, you won't be wiping them out of certain flowers, like roses & breaking another bride's heart who has the same idea.
I got married in New Orleans in the middle of the French quarter outdoor which cost 150$ then I had a sit down dinner at a very nice restaurant with 20 family and friends cost 400$ for dinner and wine.. this was 3 years ago and still to this day everyone that attend still talk about how nice and different it was... n it saved me a lot of money
I'm interested in knowing as well. I live in New Orleans. When she said $400 to feed 20 people with wine, that's cheap. I honestly don't know any fancy restaurant that would be $20 a head.
When my wife and I were getting married, we went to David's Bridal and the 2 piece wedding gown she loved, the clerk said $600. We left to another store 1hr away, she bought the same dress $65. I learned that day, always get many quotes.
They plaster images of extravagant weddings all over the place and these brides get stars in their eyes, and then when they go to actually PLAN their beautiful wedding, they realize the reality of how much it costs. Some brides who can afford to just fork up the money, but others settle for much, MUCH less and end up heartbroken. It's not fair. That was my experience, too, when planning my wedding and that is EXACTLY what drove me to want to open my own wedding venue north of Houston someday. You have no idea how many venues wouldn't tell me their prices until I came and took a look at the place. It's because they want you to fall in love with it FIRST, so they can squeeze every last dime from you! Well, NOT my venue! My dream is to bring Brides the weddings they deserve, at a reasonable cost.
CircumcisionIsChildAbuse Liberals aren't always wrong, but their laws in theory fix things, like Obamacare, but they just screw things up, like just raising the cost of healthcare.
I was just thinking that! I used to watch these kinds of shows when I was too young to understand. Now that I can, I'm sad that its so rare to find a show or even a single report like this!
I love this video. I paid $1,000 total for my wedding. That included my dress. Everybody told me all the same things. It's once in a lifetime, you want to feel like a princess, you don't want to disappoint your guests, but my husband and I were more interested in saving money than about pleasing anyone else and cut corners everywhere we could. My dress was custom made for a wedding that never happened, and it looked rather simple and unusual. They sold it to me for $99. We made the invitations, the cake and even the bridesmaids dresses ourselves. My husband decorated the church with strictly what he found in our church's basement. He did an amazing job. I wouldn't change a thing and I'm so glad we didn't give in to the pressure to spend more money.
many years ago, my girlfriend was arranging her wedding and she noticed the same thing. she was even tested it in calling once saying it was for her wedding and calling again and saying it was for a party and always was quoted more for the wedding. in the end, she was smart and told the florist etc that she was having a party instead of a wedding.
anastasia46 It happened to my wedding cake, they refused to quote me 3 tier cakes with 10", 8", and 6" but per person. Then I called a month later and said it was for my engagement, they gave me a quote lol. It was way cheaper than per person pricing.
Yoachan They make different size cakes dependent upon how many people... ruclips.net/video/n4bucphC9r4/видео.htmlm41s Example, there. And that's definitely not a wedding cake. (that one's 14$ per person for 80 people)
My husband and I just went to the courthouse and got married. I didn’t really care about the party, as long as we had each other. It was a 40 dollar fee but when the judge married us, she gave back all 40 dollars after she performed the ceremony. We celebrated with ramen at a Japanese restaurant and then went on vacation to Chicago. It was awesome 😁 I was happy.
I remember my aunt going in to get a cake for her wedding and it was estimated at $1800, but then my mom went in for the same design and said it was just a really cake for her family and they told her it would be $300. They were literally the same design and everything!
astrea79 it's not a lie since it's the couple's first day annaversary so technically.. But if you consider that then just say it's payback since they're lying to you
astrea79 Out of genuine curiosity, what’s the difference? If they have to put in the same amount of effort for both events, would they just be angry that they didn’t get to charge more for the wedding?
@@Sarah-tq2jx My entire point is that they don't put the same time and effort for both types of events. Weddings require a lot more time and effort from most vendors (photographers, florists, bakers, etc.) and therefore should be compensated appropriately. Not short changed. It's not only dishonest it's the right way to do business with anyone. There are other ways to cut costs at a wedding than shortchanging vendors.
@@MrsLadyPerez bull. Are you planning on spending an average of $24k on your "anniversary". And I'm not a vendor, I just believe in paying people approximately to do a service they are asked to do. You couldn't pay me enough money to deal with weddings because of the entitled attitude that people have about wanting things they can't afford or don't want to pay for.
Couldn't you just tell them its for an anniversary even thought its a wedding, because the florist will never go to the wedding. It's not like they can charge you more once they find out.
Valentine's Day especially! A friend of mine was charging $100./dozen for roses on Valentine's Day, which were rarely over $50. any other time, and could even get down to around $20. when there was a market glut!
Sellers take advantage of sentiment. It's present in ads most of the time. I had a cheap wedding which was loads of fun. Spend money on something important-like a new house.
I'm really glad I'm seeing this. I recently got engaged and I feel like I'm starting to get caught up in the wedding world as well. Being super poor, I started looking at things way out of my price range thinking it's a once in a life time chance, I need it!! Thanks for this reality check!
I've been married for 16 yrs. Don't go broke for just one day. Our wedding budget was $3k. I would rather spend thousands on our 1st home then on a wedding. You're just feeding a bunch of people who most likely is low key jealous or don't really like you. You can still have your dream wedding on a budget. Just remember it's just 1 day.
Just remember, the purpose is to celebrate your love for each other with your friends and family. Spending large amounts of money doesn't have to be part of it. David's bridal has sale dresses. Sometimes you can buy the dress secondhand too or rent it. Get married in a church and have a potluck reception at the church. Or if you don't want that, consider having cake and punch but schedule wedding for 1pm so people aren't hungry. For the wedding cake, get a sturdy cardboard box and cover cardboard in tinfoil to make cake base. Use a box mix from grocery store. Freeze your layers. Use the canned frosting and a special cake knife and decorator tips. Decorate top with colored dot sprinkles for whimsical or fresh flowers for elegant. Look up edible flowers. You can learn this skill on RUclips for free or maybe you have a handy friend?
I've helped friends do the flowers for their weddings. Roses from Costco are $10.00 a dozen. Vases? Thrift stores practically give them away. Paying $100.00 for a centerpiece seems crazy to me.
True, i was thinking the same, cause the stress to pay up all that is no joke. Also in the end some of the parts will have a doubt if was really worth it. U-U
I feel like that’s true. My dad spent over $75k and rented mansion in New Orleans for his second wedding, the marriage lasted 3 years. Then he remarried at a court house and his he’s still to this day.
My husband and I went to the courthouse and payed $50. No regrets whatsoever. Year later we got some wedding photos with just the two of us. He wore his blues and I bought a wedding dress for $25 at Goodwill. Both of us are happy with our decision. 🙂
Went to the courthouse too and those wedding pictures later on actually is smart. We were going to do a vow renewal but the wedding picture photo shoot sounds better.
We’re going to the courthouse too! We found my fiancé’s suit for $20. We got the shirt, pants, and tie at Ross. And the jacket at goodwill and he already had the shoes! My dress and shoes was around $20 too at Ross! We’re paying $50 for the courthouse too. Only my mom and grandma are going cause they’re the ones who have been there for us. Above everyone else. More money doesn’t mean more love, loyalty, a better wedding and or a happy marriage. Two people truly in love make a wedding, a wedding!
Who in their right mind would pay $165 per person!!!! That is ridiculous. Even $65 per person is too much. Just elope and spend the money on a down payment..
This is important information and I'm glad you're covering it. Some of it was eye-opening, and some confirmed what we already knew in our hearts. But I'm so sick of the opposite culture of wedding-shaming, where everybody likes to point out that ANY money you spent on your wedding could have gone for a down payment, a retirement fund, a trip, etc. and if you spend anything over $50 you've been a fool. Our medium-sized wedding is one of our favourite memories, second only to the birth of our daughter. It was perfect for us and we enjoyed (almost) every minute of the planning and the execution. I'm tired of being told I'm a sucker and that I should have traded in that wonderful memory for... what, a bigger house? Our house is fine. A trip? That's just a different kind of wonderful memory. Our retirement? Our fund is doing just fine, thank you.
I am a retired florist, did weddings and events. I didn't up-charge for weddings and kept within the brides budget. A lot of work goes into doing wedding flowers. First you have to sit with the bride to design the bouquets, centerpieces, wedding arch etc. You have to coordinate the colors of the flowers with the brides colors, you have to work with her budget and the kinds of flowers she wants. Most brides want way more than they can afford. There is a lot of work behind the scenes, scrubbing buckets, conditioning and hardening the flowers. The mechanics are important to the bouquet or centerpieces don't fall apart. All of this takes time and is hard work. After all this is done then you start to put everything together. If you do a good job the flowers should look effortless, believe me they are not!
Very good pal of mine planned a wedding. She re-entered her sister's wedding dress, 3 bridesmaid dresses on clearance for below $35 each, no engagement ring, but white gold bands, ceremony & reception at another sister's home, mom catered with a light buffet brunch, bought wedding cake, rented tuxedos and honeymoon camping at 3 National Parks. Total cost---- $4500. They just celebrated their 30th anniversary and their baby girl of 26 got married this past Monday the same way her parent's did. Wedding Over-Productions are the biggest waste of money.
Fourthgirl I just read one of the top comments and the person basically mentioned these details but with the view of her being the bride... i'm just gonna assume it's the same story haha. That's so awesome!! 😅👌🏾
Br00tal Caabbage: I agree, and also want some finer , dearer foods, which I could only afford if making home-cooked. Tastes much better, and people can get bigger portions. I don't like the small portions of restaurants.
My wedding cost under $500.00 I bought my dress on sale had some lace sewn on total $45-two night hotel stay $80 dollars a night , we ate at a restaurant, after the ceremony, no cake. And we got married at the base of the mountain at sunset. I had the best day of my life, and would do it again.
Okay. This sounds lovely. Especially base of mountain, with sunset. Seems symbolic - the end of the day, the beginning of a new day and a new life together.
I think way to many people are obssed with the Wedding and not a marraige.I knew a girl spent god knows how much on her wedding with in a year it as all over..
One of my friends had her parents refinance their house to pay for hers....my parents dont love me that much and I dont want them too lmao. My mom and dad paid for theirs so they told me I better save now because I'm paying for my own too
The flower shop I used to work at said we need to up the price $50-$100 more for weddings than if they were for any other even. You’re honestly better off making the pieces yourself and buying wholesale.
I am going to get married next year and a lot of my wedding items are going to be diy and i am saving money by trying to get my friends involved in helping, a friend of mine is being my wedding planner since she works in the industry,i have a friend who is a baker and i am getting her to help me bake and decorate my own wedding cake and i am doing a lot of online shopping as well to save on some money the most of the money i want is for the dress and honeymoon
I did all that for my daughters wedding. Made her cake, the centerpieces, table décor, I even made her gown, the bridesmaid dress, and flower girl dress. Gift card bag, and ring bearer pillow. It took me 3 months to make her dress worth $1500.00 for $800. Bridal satin, sewn on applique and beads. :D
Good girl! I'm getting married next month & am trying to get everything as low as possible. I bought a beautiful dress online that a woman never got to wear for £80, my friend is a beautician so shes doing my mani-pedi and makeup, her daughter is lending me her tiara, I'm wearing my own jewellery that my fiance bought for me for valentines day one year and I've bought faux flowers that i'll make into a bouquet. Good luck with your wedding!x
Hanna Lambert thanks i have been using this online shopping app called wish and have found a ton of amazing wedding stuff i have been using wish for a month now and it is amazing definitely recommend it to everyone it is better than ebay
Really, the most important is the church. This tradition of feeding the guests comes from colonial days when people would travel very long distances to attend the wedding. Now, a cake and sparkling champagne - ok, some appetizers and sweets - are enough. *Save for the honeymoon!* PS: I love Wish for this stuff!
I live in California, and aside from having a passing fancy for Canada, I've got no relation to it. Yet I cannot seem to get enough of this Marketplace series that seems pretty squarely aimed at keeping Canadians in the know about various tricks and traps. It feels like an addiction at this point.
Our budget was 15k (husbands call not mine) I managed to keep it at 9k 😂. Paid all up front, if I didn't need it I didn't get it. Also wasn't intimidated by all those "you will regret" my response was always, "trust me, I won't" lol.
As a parent of three girls, I told them upfront I would pay for their education but I would never pay thousands for a wedding. All three got great educations and have great jobs. None had an expensive wedding and all remain happily married.
I applaud women that refrain from expensive weddings. Just like diamonds, designer handbags - the consumer allows price gouging to happen. I can't believe there are couples in debt because of their "special day" when 40-50% of marriages in the US end in divorce. smh
The average person spends like $20,000 on a wedding. Thanks, capitalism. I think I'm just going to get married at a drive-thru in Vegas, and then use that $20,000 to go travelling with my new spouse instead of wasting it on table settings and flowers.
Vi Haze everyone's situation is diffrent, at a typical italian wedding, you can expect pretty much every guest to bring minimum $100... 20k wedding, 200 guests, that's free wedding... Provided close family doesn't give extra...whixh they usually do.... Not even mentioning the stag or shower that brings in thousands... I got married and made money.
Nice phones, cars and an easier more convenient lifestyle is the result of capitalism. Capitalism forces you to provide something to someone that wants that something and if someone provides something even better to that someone then the consumer wins. If there are 3 people providing the same item then the process become more competitive and the consumer wins.
When I got married I told the event planner I was planning a family reunion. When she found out it was a wedding the day of she was so mad that she couldn't charge me the bride tax after the fact.
A family reunion and a wedding are two very different things with totally different expectations. I just posted (as a photographer who does not do weddings) that an event would cost more than a wedding. It's not a bride tax having a second shooter, or providing a leather album, or having a set of mandatory photos you have to take and consequently edit; nor is a luxury bringing all duplicated equipment (you cannot re-shoot a wedding if something fails); and yet a wedding in the end costs probably less than an event, with a lot more work involved. I suggest to use the uncle with an iPhone; it would cost nothing (or close to nothing)
kitty mom everything's a need, but I wanted a special day for us...never the less we budgeted correctly, spend nearly 30K... And we actually made money at our wedding, since it's typical in our tradition to give a cash gift to the married couple.
I somewhat agree. I think 10k is a good budget for a wedding but that because most of us are middle class. BUT If you and your fiance make 80-90k per year and you plan and save for the wedding for 2 yrs plus your parents are chipping in 5k+ why not have a 20k wedding?... If you can afford it, that's your business
My cousin was being pressured to have 400+ guests at his wedding by his parents, who wanted him to invite every single aunt/uncle plus every cousin (his mom has 10 siblings all married with several kids). He ended up having his wedding at a nice restaurant where everybody paid their meal. 😄
I’m Mexican and our weddings and quinceañeras normally have up too 1,000 guest. I’ve already told my parents if I ever get married I’m having 50 guests top and we’re having a backyard wedding. I’m not spending that much money on people I don’t like.
@@sUjU91 I feel like in many cases weddings/quinces this big is just to show off extended family and friends money they seem to have (which they don't actually have). Also, I'm Mexican and Hoseok is my cup of tae.
I work in weddings and in this one wedding the bride had a bouquet 💐 that was made out of lettuce, Kale and other veggies and it looked so unique and beautiful. Every table had fruits and veggies as Center pieces too and at the end everyone took them home 🏠! Beautiful idea 😎
just say you have a fancy party, don't mention "wedding". My dad works as a pastry chef and he says once you say "wedding cake" they up the price where he works at. I did order a wedding cake from him and told him to say it was a fancy graduation cake 😁
So true for years i have made cakes for all parties and weddings and was always told there was a different price for wedding cakes- to me it was silly i charge by the work i have a base price for all cakes ( charge by serving )sizes n flavors and i add for designs - wedding cakes for me are simple compared to most crazy 3 tier kid cakes i do lol
My first wedding in 1982 cost about $500 and lasted 27 years. My second wedding in 2009 cost about $500, also, and we're still married. In lieu of gifts (for both weddings) I asked people to bring food and drinks and help with the decorations. The money I spent for both weddings were for the cake, the dress, the flowers, and parting gifts for everyone. My only wish for both weddings was for everyone to be together and have fun.
I and my husband went to city hall and got married, we were very happy:) 8 years later we are debt-free, we own everything we have plus a pretty good net worth...on the road to retirement and we are still happy:)
Yes, you are getting a wedding tax. I don’t know about caterers, but for musicians, weddings are the only time we actually get paid. That woman who said “it’s the bread and butter of our business” is exactly right.
My original budget was 9,000 but I spent 11,000 for everything at the end of the day. I paid cash for everything so I'm glad I didn't have any debt after the fact. But it was super super hard to save the two years that I did. I'm so glad it's over! (Btw I had 300+ people)
Wow girl you did great! I paid 11,000 for my entire wedding but only had 150 guests...and yes No debt! My husband was handing out envelopes at the wedding to pay vendors lol
My wife and I spent $1,200 on our wedding. We set the rule of "We only invite people we actually associate with on a regular basis." We "catered" the wedding ourselves, we bought very limited selections of alcohol (beer / wine). We were able to secure a venue, at a fire hall, by volunteering at volunteer firefighter fundraisers in exchange for 1 day use of their hall. We were responsible for setup / teardown of the tables / chairs, cleaning, etc. Of course various family members helped us (which was greatly appreciated). Food / beverage is ultimately the most expensive. We went to a chain of retail suppliers called "GFS (Gordon Food Service)" and bought trays of chicken, pasta, etc. We were able to provide food / beverages for a total of $14 a person. The dress my wife wore was the same one her cousin had worn years prior, as she didn't see the purpose of buying a dress she was only going to wear once. Yes, it's not the "dream" wedding (according to what society says a wedding should be), but it was about celebrating our marriage with family and friends. We didn't spend $800 on a limo, $1,000 on flowers, etc. It was by definition a "no frills" wedding, and to be honest everyone had a great time. Sure, the cleanup sucked and arranging everything was time consuming and at times extremely irritating, but that left more money for us to get away for a week afterwards and have a great honeymoon. We've been happily married for 5 years. Just remember, don't worry about impressing people. When you have a huge wedding, the only thing your guests really care about is free food / booze. Keep it small, intimate, and affordable, spend the money on a nicer home, or a great honeymoon.
Part of the reason I suspect weddings get charged more is because newlyweds tend to be more difficult customers. It's the bridezilla tax more than anything, I'd say.
go to city hall to do the paper thing then rent a group camp site or something and have a bbq and bring your own food. I've never understood the need for a big extravagant wedding
Sam Smith And i don’t understand how can you make a special day into something like an evening away from home on a camp site. People want different things and people like different things.
For attention, for popularity, mostly inferiority complex. Each men and women think they can prove their presence or power in the community by throwing big weddings to gain that title "most people talked about" or "most memorable". All in all it's not a smart investment.
I officiated a double wedding and the mom of a bride made the cake for free, wedding was in the backyard, no flowers, no wedding outfits, no music, just 2 couples in love marrying each other and their few family and friends there. No vows said, just the I do's and I now pronounce you.... And done. Everyone was super happy and thrilled. Cost was the cake ingredients and mom was a professional baker who made tons of cakes. Delicious. I got 20 dollars and a few slices of amazing cake and pure gratitude. I was hired to do the wedding 10 hours before it happened. It was simple, nearly free and full of joy. How it should be.
Are you kidding? You wouldn't believe how many people buy elaborate 3 tier cakes for their kid's 4th birthday. It's not that outlandish if someone says they want an extra fancy looking birthday or anniversary cake.
I am convinced to just call my wedding "my anniversary." Because, it isnt really lying. I do want it on the day of the anniversary. But I am not paying a wedding tax, just cause its wedding. Nope. Thank you insider! 😊❤❤❤
Rooster Teeth shirt @6:08! Woo! If you want good flowers in Canada, talk to florists at a Safeway if you have them. Lots of them have floral designers who have been working 5-25 years in the business, and they know their stuff. Stay away from seasonal flowers that are out of season (peonies have a ridiculously short grow season in Canada, gladiolas are summer flowers) and roses (typically 3-5 bucks per stem, and don’t always hold up well in extreme weather). Asking for a seasonal bouquet will often get you a better deal. For the love of god, keep in mind that not all pinterest bouquets are doable in Canada, and that super cute delphinium and blue orchid bouquet you saw is gonna cost you an arm and a leg.
This is why my engagement ring is made up of Moissanites . Looks exactly like it, Ethical, More Brillance (rainbow look), hardness is almost the same. Best decision I’ve ever made.
My cousin chose a pink morganite ring. It's so pretty! I was led to believe by every wedding ad that rings HAD to be diamonds. I wish I had known of other options, and that it didn't HAVE to be diamonds. Glad my husband didnt spend so much on it. But it's a beautiful ring and I still love it. 🙂
We bought mine at a pawn shop. The ring originally sold for almost $4k. We paid $600 at the pawn shop and then $80 to send if off to be worked on. I wanted it brought back to like new and they did.
I love these market place videos so much! I wish they had an American version. They're enlightened me on a lot of 'hacks' per say as a consumer. Love it
I worked in retail and I saw the markup first hand. For example little girls Easter dresses were initially sold for $25-$50 after Easter they were marked down to $5 -$3 dollars. $24 flip flops were marked down to $2. After I saw that I vowed Never to pay the markup for anything!
My dress was $500 and even that felt like a splurge. But my mom paid for it; she insisted. And didn't go into debt for it. Wedding altogether was about 5k which was food and photographer. I could have spent the photog money on renting a few canon rebels to let the guests use to get better photos. We had a couple of beautiful photos but not worth 3k.
I can say we did the same thing. Dress was reasonable. wedding package on the beach was 1500 with the use of a room for the supper. But the photographer was over 2k. My dad took photos with his fancy new camera, you couldnt tell the difference.
Oddly enough my husband wanted a nice wedding, since his family was coming from France to the US he wanted something really nice. Me being me though wanted something simple. It ended up with him making a budget of 15k for our wedding and me planning an awesome wedding with a combination package of DJ, Videographer, Photographer which only cost 1k (considering). In between the flowers, venue (omg so much food) dress, and the package I managed to make him happy in many ways 😂 9k for the entire wedding, the extra 6k was saved for vacations or emergency anything lol. Also all the food left over from the wedding was donated to a homeless shelter so nothing went to waste.
What goes into an anniversary party is very different than a wedding. You pay more for more work. You have way more conversations with vendors, about all the small details that people don't care about for an anniversary. Standards of weddings are far higher and it takes more hours out of the day for the vendors. Good luck getting a wedding standard for an anniversary party price.
@Heather H, you sound like one of the people that also takes advantage of people who are getting married.. At the end of the day, the 3 course meal would be the same for both wedding and anniversary...
Well this is one of the reason why I won't have a wedding party when I get married. I'd rather make a small dinner party and spend the rest of wedding budget travelling with my future husband to celebrate.
People spend too much time, money and energy trying to impress people that don't really like you anyway.
Precisely
Dairy Queen you got that right , the more my bf’s parents push for a wedding the more I wait. 11 years later lol.

80's Nostalgia Guy I don’t live in America
We spent 90K on our wedding..... 85 of that was just for the venue!! We bought a house for 80K and added some furniture and redid the wallpaper in two rooms. Three years later, we're still enjoying the venue. A gorgeous two story, three bedroom/three bathroom Victorian. I came down a gorgeous curved staircase, and we were married in front of the fireplace in the livingroom. Our reception hall? The entire house! It also made our reception into a housewarming party LOL.
Sounds beautiful
That is the best thing (wedding story ) I've ever heard about any wedding till date

Need to do one on funerals if they haven't already. That's a big con!
They have two episodes on funerals! Those are HUGE cons!!! It's on their channel, enjoy! :)
Yes, and in most ways it is worse, because the clients are grief stricken and often irrational at the time.
That’s so wholesome.

Exactly
Wow! How much was the lighthouse? And could you go inside to the top? If it's not to much to ask?
That’s my plan.... well not a lighthouse but a simple wedding.

This is how it should be done.
This should be illegal to give people different prices for the same thing
Marissa Givan Tell the restaurants that 🤣 or even better, tell the grocery stores that!
Surely you could argue a form of discrimination? You shouldn’t charge one customer a different price unless it’s a different product
Ill be cheap tell them its and anniversary then just have a wedding
I would be really suspicious if I had two customers in a row wanting the exact same thing
Maybe they ask the question on separate days, so that the staff doesn't notice the similarity. After several other unrelated inquiries go by, you think they really will remember?
Indeed. That's why I'd charge the second one more.
I know, but I think if they go about it in very different manners and are natural, and easy, relaxed about it, the seller would be calm too and not think about it.
Same weekend too, I’d be thinking wow must be a popular weekend I’m not lowering the prices for this next person.

High end prom dresses are just as costly to make as wedding dresses and are well under $1000. No dress is 8000$ worth

Limo driver bragged that they adjust the temp in the car?? LOL!
Seriously like that's a huge preparation to turn up the A/C and let it blow cold air for two minutes!
I have always been cold with nervousness at such special occasions and definitely want my car nice and warm, even in summer. 24-25 degrees
Okay, but to be fair the photographer needs to be notified in advance so that they have the correct equipment. I probably wouldn’t bring a telephoto lease, reflector, bride hanger, and lights to an anniversary party.
What is a bride hanger?
I think that’s where cutting the budget on other items like venue and food would come in to help. Photography is where I would personally splurge more of the expense because of the level of detail and extensive wandering they’d have to do for several hours.
I do some wedding photography gigs during the summer. It’s pretty intense! Of course they have to be compensated with how much they have to follow around the various parties - even more so if you’re flying solo!
Also unlike the other items, the photos are the only ones you’ll be looking at for decades!

My sister did that for her wedding saved a bunch of money on flowers and still looked good.

How precious:)
When my wife and I were getting married, we went to David's Bridal and the 2 piece wedding gown she loved, the clerk said $600. We left to another store 1hr away, she bought the same dress $65. I learned that day, always get many quotes.
What was the other store??

Hi I want to do an anniversary party.
*Does a wedding instead*
That's a great way to infuriate the vendors you deal with. How would you feel dealing with a client that lied to you?
astrea79 it's not a lie since it's the couple's first day annaversary so technically..

It may be bc they have their priorities in order. They focus on the marriage instead of having a wedding more extravagant than so-and-so.
I feel like that’s true. My dad spent over $75k and rented mansion in New Orleans for his second wedding, the marriage lasted 3 years. Then he remarried at a court house and his he’s still to this day.
There's more blessing in a quiet wedding.
My husband and I went to the courthouse and payed $50. No regrets whatsoever. Year later we got some wedding photos with just the two of us. He wore his blues and I bought a wedding dress for $25 at Goodwill. Both of us are happy with our decision. 🙂
$50 USD fees? In my country its 3 times that amount for the legal fees
Went to the courthouse too and those wedding pictures later on actually is smart. We were going to do a vow renewal but the wedding picture photo shoot sounds better.
Am I hearing a cheapskate
Am I hearing a cheapskate
$2 per person. Everyone gets a hotdog and a snowcone. Bring your own mustard. Be happy wish us well and go home 😂
Ole boy from father of the bride did lol 250 a head LMBO
Ashley Burt lmao 😂
Florist here too, and we do a lot of weddings and events. Agreeing with you 100000%
"They must be amazing flowers. Great dirt, great worms" I couldn't stop laughing at that XD
That is soo beautiful. And they sure saved a lot too.
every party over production is a waste of money
Spent $25 at courthouse and $2400 to travel overseas, sorry it didn't matter to me to have a wedding.
I did the same
25 only for court wedding
I got married in my home with 2 witnesses. Don’t regret it. If I have an anniversary Wedding i would not make it large
This is why I do everything myself. I may be a wreck for weeks before things happen but it will be gorgeous, cheap, and thoughtful.
Br00tal Caabbage: I agree, and also want some finer , dearer foods, which I could only afford if making home-cooked. Tastes much better, and people can get bigger portions. I don't like the small portions of restaurants.
9:50 "If it's hot out then the AC is on"
What a gentleman!!! And they said chivalry was dead!!
It blows my mind how much people spend on weddings
For a gorgeous women like you I will spend the millions I don't have so you could be my lovel Wife !!!
M
Same. Sometimes I think the more people spend on the wedding, the shorter the marriage will be.
One of my friends had her parents refinance their house to pay for hers....my parents dont love me that much and I dont want them too lmao. My mom and dad paid for theirs so they told me I better save now because I'm paying for my own too
Ngl, a single rose in a vase from dollar tree makes a super neat minimalistic centerpiece, it’s a ton cheaper than actual bouquets
Thumbnail was cakes then didn’t show ANYTHING about cakes!😓🤦🏻♀️
The flower shop I used to work at said we need to up the price $50-$100 more for weddings than if they were for any other even.
You’re honestly better off making the pieces yourself and buying wholesale.
who cares if its a re-upload, i havent seen this yet.
*Save for the honeymoon!*
PS: I love Wish for this stuff!
Pinterest is your best friend
I live in California, and aside from having a passing fancy for Canada, I've got no relation to it. Yet I cannot seem to get enough of this Marketplace series that seems pretty squarely aimed at keeping Canadians in the know about various tricks and traps. It feels like an addiction at this point.
Forget the wedding and ring just buy me a nice three bedroom 2.5 bath house. 😬
Exactly. That money could be a downpayment
Our budget was 15k (husbands call not mine) I managed to keep it at 9k 😂.
Paid all up front, if I didn't need it I didn't get it. Also wasn't intimidated by all those "you will regret" my response was always, "trust me, I won't" lol.
Treia Saint Wow, I can't imagine paying $9000 for one day!!
J Wolek lol me neither but it was my husbands decision XD
I'm paying around 12grand including rings. Otherwise I was under 10.. some people have I've seen in groups are at like 30grand
You will regret deeply if you spend 9k and divorce. I will keep it at $100
Sam LSD you can't even get a marriage license and get it signed for $100. Lmao
To be fair, the limo driver did charge $100 extra but he also is offering a different service by coming early and waiting..
jmp2021 waiting early > time > other customers > money
I need to stop binging this show... it's so addictive.
Honestly I’ll probably just get married at the courthouse and just go out to dinner with friends a family after. That’ll be my wedding 👌🏼
This is exactly what I was just thinking. Perhaps after the dinner a small after-party for close family/friends too
Agreed. And the more I see in life and wiser (hope) the more I agree with you
As a parent of three girls, I told them upfront I would pay for their education but I would never pay thousands for a wedding. All three got great educations and have great jobs. None had an expensive wedding and all remain happily married.
I applaud women that refrain from expensive weddings. Just like diamonds, designer handbags - the consumer allows price gouging to happen. I can't believe there are couples in debt because of their "special day" when 40-50% of marriages in the US end in divorce. smh
@Brandi Bohannon I think he assumed because he didn't hear an accent.
I don’t want an expensive wedding but I want a big honeymoon
Same
The average person spends like $20,000 on a wedding. Thanks, capitalism. I think I'm just going to get married at a drive-thru in Vegas, and then use that $20,000 to go travelling with my new spouse instead of wasting it on table settings and flowers.
Vi Haze so communism is better?
Vi Haze everyone's situation is diffrent, at a typical italian wedding, you can expect pretty much every guest to bring minimum $100... 20k wedding, 200 guests, that's free wedding... Provided close family doesn't give extra...whixh they usually do.... Not even mentioning the stag or shower that brings in thousands... I got married and made money.
use the 20k at vegas and bet it on black jack. Double it, and now your wedding is free.
S G Same as Chinese weddings.
Nice phones, cars and an easier more convenient lifestyle is the result of capitalism. Capitalism forces you to provide something to someone that wants that something and if someone provides something even better to that someone then the consumer wins. If there are 3 people providing the same item then the process become more competitive and the consumer wins.
Photography is the only area where I understand why they charge weddings more.
When I got married I told the event planner I was planning a family reunion. When she found out it was a wedding the day of she was so mad that she couldn't charge me the bride tax after the fact.
Did she say any thing else ?
A family reunion and a wedding are two very different things with totally different expectations. I just posted (as a photographer who does not do weddings) that an event would cost more than a wedding. It's not a bride tax having a second shooter, or providing a leather album, or having a set of mandatory photos you have to take and consequently edit; nor is a luxury bringing all duplicated equipment (you cannot re-shoot a wedding if something fails); and yet a wedding in the end costs probably less than an event, with a lot more work involved. I suggest to use the uncle with an iPhone; it would cost nothing (or close to nothing)
@@roadrunner156 actually I hired my photographer separately and he knew it was a wedding. The event planner was used just for the meal.
@@FijianSouljah1312 she was kind of sketch and the invoice she gave wasn't itemized but the amount was what we agreed to so I can't complain.
@@kathyharris1627 ok
Alimony is the most expensive part.
LOL
Lol, Comment of the month xD
Lmao! Best... comment... ever!!!!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
If you pay more than 10k for ur wedding you have no one to blame but yourself. Good lord. You dont need all tha crap.
Get over it
kitty mom everything's a need, but I wanted a special day for us...never the less we budgeted correctly, spend nearly 30K... And we actually made money at our wedding, since it's typical in our tradition to give a cash gift to the married couple.
you dont need any of it tbh, dont need a dress or cake or anything. its about how you want to spend your day
I agree. Its all on you.
Nevertheless
What I don't get is needing to invite 200 people 😂 Like wtf do you even like that many people??
Come to a Nigerian wedding & you’ll think it’s a carnival with 1500 guests or more; you ain’t seen nothing yet
Malaysian weddings are typically 500-2000 people 😅 500 is considered a small wedding.
My wedding was so small and in my home, it was the happiest day of my life!!! i feel bad for the people that give into the hype...
Betsy: Yes- might the hype be a surrogate for real rich intimacy and warm comfort and joy?
Get married at the court house. Done.
aakburns That's What we did.
aakburns lol wheres the fun in that. Jkjk im broke so court it is
We got merried in the court, saved the money then traveled the world.
aakburns yep and dinner for 80 people ... total cost $400
YUP
just say you have a fancy party, don't mention "wedding". My dad works as a pastry chef and he says once you say "wedding cake" they up the price where he works at. I did order a wedding cake from him and told him to say it was a fancy graduation cake 😁
11alliLo I told them it was for my engagement party and the quote was less too. Maybe fancy graduation or birthday excuses are even better.
and it's technically not a lie, you just graduated from being single, lol
How????? Omg 11k
I thought it was common knowledge to NEVER say wedding.
My wedding was considered a "cheap" wedding as we only spent "$1500" and I could not have been happier with my wedding lol
“Gently used” wedding dresses 😂. They’ve probably never been more than 15 hours!
Alright so you gotta walk in and be like “I would like a white tiered cake in the shape of a wedding cake but it’s not a wedding cake”
It's an anniversary cake
Are you kidding? You wouldn't believe how many people buy elaborate 3 tier cakes for their kid's 4th birthday. It's not that outlandish if someone says they want an extra fancy looking birthday or anniversary cake.
Autobot Rock
Yup, I would probably say it’s for my neice’s sweet 16 or something
I am convinced to just call my wedding "my anniversary." Because, it isnt really lying. I do want it on the day of the anniversary. But I am not paying a wedding tax, just cause its wedding. Nope.
Thank you insider! 😊❤❤❤
I want a dozen red roses.....
"I don't know your colours, I don't know the flowers" 🧐
I want a wedding that’s simple as heck and the rest of the money is spent on things i actually need
0:39 *"Do we even have a budget" she tried to sound "expensive" but actually was damn cheap as he said "we tried to go as low as possible"* LMAO
Dealing with brides is a lot more stressful than dealing with normal clients. This might be part of the reason they charge more for weddings.
diamonds aren’t even legitimately valuable! the number of diamonds released is controlled by the diamond industry. it’s such a scam lmao
Also all the food left over from the wedding was donated to a homeless shelter so nothing went to waste.
when i have my wedding its gonna be all either reused, remade, cheap, or a gift.
According to google
ceremony : $500-600+
bridal bouquet: $225+
bridesmaids bouquets: $100+
Boutonnieres and corsages: $20 and $35 respectively
Well when I get married I’m going to say it’s for an anniversary lol
Oppsie Doppsie it’s your 0th anniversary lol
What goes into an anniversary party is very different than a wedding. You pay more for more work. You have way more conversations with vendors, about all the small details that people don't care about for an anniversary. Standards of weddings are far higher and it takes more hours out of the day for the vendors. Good luck getting a wedding standard for an anniversary party price.
@Heather H, you sound like one of the people that also takes advantage of people who are getting married..
At the end of the day, the 3 course meal would be the same for both wedding and anniversary...
Or you could say a family reunion. Which it actually is. Lol
I seen a show once and they said 3000 for EACH tiny cupcake. I was like...... I am in the wrong line of work.
Well now we know just say it's and anniversary
And yet, most end up in failed marriages. Marriage is important! That's life, not a single day.
Well this is one of the reason why I won't have a wedding party when I get married. I'd rather make a small dinner party and spend the rest of wedding budget travelling with my future husband to celebrate.
