Notes on the neck are always a path for someone! If you sh!t the bed on a tutorial, so what?! You play guitar awesome and teach great. Stop bagging on yourself!!
Thanks Robert It's great to get a better understanding on Bonamassa style of soloing. There is such richness of he's playing where we can hear jazz and country but always faithful to the blues. He's is really taking the blues to another level. And you Robert are doing a great job explaining it for us. Thanks Robert!
In my opinion, you are the greatest. I accept that I am never going to shred. Been playing over 40 good years, and have been taking your lessons, and have paid good money online with another, but when I get to the improv stage, it ain't happening. Just wanted to say, you are the greatest. Love your attitude, phrasing, everything.
ok, so just getting a chance to work on this. I'm using a bit of delay and chorus (because it sounds cool, lol). I noticed when I get to the hammer on the E string, 6th to 7(Bb-B) and back to the G (5th fret D string), it sounds very Robin Trower (bridge of sighs). Phase90 even more so. just saying, lol. I'm definitely having fun with this one
I'm glad you are shining a light on the weird side of blues licks. I generally play to what might sound cool in the riff. But if it doesn't, I'll hang on the bad note for a while like I meant to do it, then slide to the correct note. That's what decades on the guitar can do.
I love met him at 16 when he came thru w Bloodline then again got to see him in a private party when he started 3 piece n singing I was blown away him n Derek Trucks r who im studing after playing professional since 16 now 46 started at blues rock to jazz n so on. but I kind of had to growing up in Tulsa n my father played bass with the Gap Band . took from all 3 guitar gods. from Tulsa n all who came back with there Grammys n gold records. give me a call sometime. your a great teacher. ive taught privately but could use some you tube instructions .
Great great video and lesson, brotha! I'm a die hard, lifelong metalhead that is obsessed with Bonamassa. I've seen him live 3 times. Just a jaw droppingly talented dude. Thanks for the woodshed fuel!
It's kind of pathetic to pigeonhole yourself with the pejorative "metalhead" before declaring musical diversity by adding, "Oh, yes, I also listen to a particular blues rock musician".
Hey Robert! I love your tutorials. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on your picking hand and how you hold the pick when you are finger-picking and then play with the pick again. I am teaching myself jazz in lockdown, and need both finger picking and picking with the pick...you are the man for the job, I see you doing this all the time a I just need some pointers 😊🎶
I'd love to take some lessons from BOX teachers. I've always been "play whatever, and emphasize that note!" Now that I'm older; tone, timber, feel, impact, composition and exit mean so much than it used to!! Do I love Van Halen & Megadeth? Of course! I just respect those that got us to this level!!
Yeah man. Really like this one. Get a lot of inspiration from Bonamassa. I like the way he puts different concepts together. He has spent much time with his hands on the strings. I believe it just seems to come natural. It comes from playing a lot. And who wants to play the same old stuff all the time. Thanks for showing it at a pace where I can play with it. I think the lesson here is, if it sounds cool, play it.
Interesting scale... I think I'll call it a lick scale... ...and something I can definitely use. It's somewhat advanced but not too difficult that I couldn't grasp it with some practice and reps. Thank you!
That run sorta doesn't make sense if we're looking at it from a scale or mode pattern perspective. I think Bonamassa may be looking at it as E minor pentatonic with tonic notes from chords/arpeggios mixed in instead.
@@jacksolomon451 toan comes from the fingers and butterscotch ok? i see no butterscotch therefore i hear no toan. listen to jammie handlicks sometime kid ok?
@@jacksolomon451 Yeah, no! First learn the rules, then break them. That goes for proper spelling as well as for music theory. And if you found an incorrect spelling in this comment: shove it where the sun never shines. English is my 3rd language.
Rob the way I see it is the lick is in D Major / B minor (F# and C#) apart from that Bb to B hammer on on the low E string which you could view as a Major 7 to B, or a #5 to D - either of which would be fine in a Blues run like Joe fires off every day.
Nice, although I don’t get why you mention aeolian and mixolydian since 100% of the notes are basic E dorian, appart from that flat five which is some kind of blues note. To get aeolian we would need to hear some flat sixth Imo.
bro. look. i know you aint gonna do it. but hear me out. i will comment this on your latest vid too. please for god sakes, tell us how you take care of your hair. it is ridiculously beautiful. my hair is long too and please. for gods sake (a comment would do the trick too) please tell me how to take care of it.
Robert... you are overthinking the whole thang! Pentatonic with notes that the fingers like to hit.... I'd love to take lessons to sound like you. Maybe the other way? Be well Robert!!
Totally made a mistake homies. I went to the 6th and don’t know why I was thinking it was a Major 3rd it’s closer to Dorian than Mixo.
I was about to say.. great vid !!

I made the comment before I read yours and immediately deleted lol
I was thinking during the video "Man, its more simply than that.... its dorian..." lol
hey im still confused could please mention the notes of the bonomossa scale
I wonder if Joe will unlock the Robert Baker scales ;-)
Doubt it 😀
We need a “How to maintain your hair conditioned and smooth”
I totally agree😂
Although funy, he has answered tha question many times. Personally, i perfer videos about guitar.
I use something very similar to that in my playing quite a lot. Cool lesson, man.
Thanks buddy. Hope all is well.

superb playing with beautiful guitar ..
Yeah dude, please do more of these! I love hearing the theory behind the riffs! Maybe some theory behind great rhythm guitar parts too?
Anything Bonamassa is awesome! Thanks, Robert for the lesson!

when you take a lick/riff and show the theory behind it.

How does he keep his hair so SHINY! AND SMOOTH?!!!
Right!!
Fast fret good for hair also
Bonamassa is a beast 😁 Thanks for breaking this down. I appreciate hearing your perspective on this run 🤙

Yep finish the other licks. Thanks for this one!
Ready for part 2 now :)
A simpler was to conceptualize this lick is using 'E Dorian' with an added blues note (b5).
Man that guitar is a beast..great tone
Lydian Dominant (fourth mode of the melodic minor) if you count the A natural as a passing tone
I can't really support you calling the A natural as a passing tone when it's in the middle of a clear minor triad which Joe uses all the time.
Really cool lesson!! I’ve been trying to build up my speed for a couple weeks now and have been practicing using some Yngwie scales and PG scales.
I'd love to take some lessons from BOX teachers.

Ah I forgot to mention Joe is playing an E shuffle before hand then goes to the 4 chord after it. But yeah I totally see what you mean.
@@RobertBakerGuitar So as someone pointed out later it's just basically E Dorian over a minor blues progression which is pretty standard
Great lesson as usual, thanks!
17 seconds into video yea sure I love your videos great content thanks for the lessons :]
That is a incredible sounding guitar
great video Rob... more bonamassa please :-)
This was awesome and so fun! Thanks.
That's when you know you've made it as a guitarist, because you get an entire scale / lick named after you!

It's just the blues scale/pentatonic with chromatics.
Busting out of minor pentatonic scales to natural minor or harmonic minor scales are just a fingering natural!!

Love that guitar
I might task you with teaching an old dog new tricks, Robert..... Watch out!!!!
Isn’t the “shift” you mentioned on 6:04 just the major 6th? Before that he plays the 9 so it is just E dorian
Yeah man, I agree it is a diminished 7th (the equivalent of the major 6th). So yeah Dorian vibes since we're in minor at the moment :)
Like I said D Major / Ionian = E Dorian fits perfectly with one odd passing note
Yeah i don't know why i was thinking major third its totally Dorian no Mixo thats my mistake
@RobertBaker Can you please tell us how to get that fantastic sound from a Tele? What gear did you use in this video?
