"the Electromagnets" I saw them live in a small club in Austin one Friday evening in 1973 playing material from their first album which hadn't yet been released. As good as they all were Eric was the most impressive and the most reserved. The next morning I was the only person in the local music shop just up the street when Eric and another band member came in to speak briefly with the only employee. Eric caught me looking at him across the room but we didn't speak. I was sure he recognized me from the night before as I came in just before the gig and just sat by myself on a barstool until they finished. I knew nothing about them but left speechless - the rest of the weekend.

Nice one Robert, good lesson, I'm glad even a good guitar player like your self has a week part. That is your decending on the scale and stuff, mine is I play one day and it sounds great, then I go back another day do the same thing and it sounds terrible 😄....I can't get my head around it, but Hay, I still love playing. Even I have trouble decending.......all the best and stay well.

There is a term for what you are describing. It's important to note that Eric Johnson knows music theory and his innovations on the guitar started from this knowledge. The hack you refer to is known as a "compound interval". If your melody remains in the same octave it's called a simple interval. It's easier to make these compound leaps on guitar than the piano which Eric incorporated into his performance style.
